Have been to Pondicherry on several occasions but it seems like the food quality and service has gone down quite a bit unfortunately. Went there recently and ordered the pomegranate Pani poori, mushroom salad, chickfu Frankie and uppma. The Pani poori was probably the best with an innovative twist on the Pani. Mushroom salad was a bit lackluster and lacked texture while all of the ingredients were mushy. Even the Frankie that I am accustomed to seemed to be harsh on the spice level and did not seem to have a good flavor. They were superbly busy and I felt so with the staff as well who seemed were rushing from one table to the next. Did not feel like the server was really attentive or patient and unfortunately this may have added to the experience. I will be back but probably only for the bake shop + lab as that is amazing hands down. read more

I would give the food four stars. But because of the price and especially the service, I knocked it down a star. We have been probably here three times. I would go again though for pretty good food. The thalis are fun to order to get a sampling of several dishes. I've had the earth and the Vishnu thali. The butter chicken is good but nothing to write home to mom about. I like more variety in the thalis better. We went to their bake lab upstairs...and the chai pie is awesome! Pondicheri did a great job of re-imagining this tea into a coagulated, congealed and delicious pie! It's so exactly like how you'd imagine chai in the form of pie would taste. Very good. There are is a mix of traditional fishes and more modern take of Indian food on the menu which is interesting. The layout is trendy as is the crowd, which makes sense given the area. The prices are also kinda what you'd expect given the area of town. But I have a thing about Asian food needing to be a low, reasonable price. You can go to Little India and get food just as good, and for cheaper! My bigger complaint has been the inconsistent service. For some reason, the hostess is always gone for several minutes when I walk in. The first time we went, i recall the waitress was attentive and asked if we had been there and explained the menu. But on another occasion, the waitress hardly paid us any attention, I don't even think ever refilled my water (a hugee pet peeve), and all on a night where the restaurant wasn't busy. And another time, the waiter was super hyper, a little weird but also kinda nice and friendly. So all in all, you go here for comparable food, location and atmosphere. Pondicheri is just an all right restaurant with all right food. The decor is beautiful, and the waitstaff is excellent, but the food leaves something to be desired. We started with the Pav Bhaji, which did not taste authentic. It was quite bland and not memorable. My dining partner got the Vishnu Thali, while I had the Paneer Curry. The Vishnu Thali contained vegetable curry, brussels sprouts, smoked eggplant, dal, sauteed greens, and carrot roti. The smoked eggplant was the highlight of the thali for sure -- it was incredibly well-spiced and delicious. The rest of the thali was pretty good but nothing special. The Paneer Curry, on the other hand, was terrible. The creamy cashew sauce was odd tasting, not flavorful, and overall strange. The paneer, however, was quite good, and is actually made in-house. For drinks, we got the Lovely Leech and the Hot Stuff. The drinks were interesting and definitely the best part of the meal, but they did not blow me away. Overall, Pondicheri is just an okay restaurant. I would highly recommend going to its sister restaurant, Indika, instead. read more

After loosening up at neighboring bar St. Genevieve's, my be-munchied friends and I headed down the West Ave shopping center in hopes of finding some substantial snacks. Well, something substantial that wouldn't cost a arm, leg and 10 years of credit card debt. Eyeing Eddie V's and immediately coming to terms with reality, we looked across the way at the sultry-lit Pondicheri. Yep, Southern Indian-inspired cuisine would do. Read: naan=Indian tortillas=Indian pita=bread=good. This much would do. My friend and I, ever indecisive, were happy to see a whole section of the menu dedicated to customizable thalis. These small custard-sized cups of stews, meats, salads and veggies came with a couple large pieces of naan for scooping sauces and assuaging mouth-fires. Each comes with 5 cups - I customized my Earth thali to come with eggplant, dal and greens. And extra naan. Of course. Our waiter was really helpful, offering recommendations when our tongues stumbled over menu pronunciations and our brows crumpled over unfamiliar items. But most importantly, he was quick with the water supply when our faces inevitably broke out in an oh-so-attractive sheen of spicy curry sweat. Pondicheri definitely broke the Indian food ice for me. This spectacular food makes Tex-Mex taste as bland as eating saltines in front of C-SPAN. read more

I had higher hopes for this place, but it was an okay experience overall. I came for lunch and ordered the Pav Bhaji (cauliflower & potato masala with toasted pumpkin buns), which was good, but too salty. My mom ordered one of the salads. She can't eat really spicy food, which usually isn't a problem at most Indian restaurants, but the food was already pre-marinated here, so they weren't able to decrease the spiciness. She also has to eat gluten free, and there are a lot of gluten free items on the menu, however per the waiter they are all spicy!! Not much choice for someone who eats gluten free and low spice. The restaurant is decorated nicely with colorful fabric and has a lot of windows, so it is bright. I liked the atmosphere of the place in addition to the fact that the food comes out quickly, which is great if you don't have a lot of time. read more

After you open the huge and slightly confusing glass doors, a room with tall ceilings and huge windows wrapped in earthy colors will greet you. You will have to wait about 10-20 minutes in line before being able to order giving you time to study the lengthy menu. The teas and coffees didn't stand out for me, but my beet and lentil pancake with a steaming fried egg on top made for a great morning. The casual environment is lively with chatting couples and friends on brunch outings and others sipping coffee and enjoying the free wifi. New favorite Indian restaurant. So many elements of Pondicheri made for an amazing dinner experience tonight. 3 girlfriends and I went around dinnertime on a Saturday night, and although the wait was a [reasonable] half hour, it was worth every minute. First, the venue. The pivot door was a great attention grabber and a unique first impression. One of my friends suggested we wait in the hallway with the restrooms, and I'm so glad we did. One of the walls was completely covered with beautifully written, thoughtful quotes from various famous persons. It was creative, sentimental, and oddly not cheesy at all; it was also a great way to pass the time. By the time we finished reading the quotes, it was just about time to be seated. The overall decor of the restaurant was classy but comfortable. I like that it was a bit darker, but you could still read the menus easily. The restaurant was packed, but the tables weren't too close together, and it still felt very intimate due to the set up. The full length light curtains to separate parts of the restaurant were a nice touch. Overall, the vibe was chic and classy without being too formal. Next, the food. We'd had tons of time to pore over the menu, so we ordered quickly.Our server, Julie, was polite, attentive, kind, and informative. Our food was fresh and hot, and didn't take long to come out at all. My friend and I went halfsies on the butter chicken ($12) and the paneer masala ($12). The butter chicken was easily the star of the evening. The sauce was savory, creamy, rich, and abundant. The chicken was perfectly tender, and they served you just enough to be satisfied without forgetting about the cilantro and other delicious vegetables they threw in. I was not a fan of the paneer masala. I didn't think it was saucy enough, and the cauliflower was overwhelming. I mainly ate the paneer. I ordered a naan ($2), and that was flawless. Another one of my friends had the chicken Frankie, and she absolutely loved it. The dessert warrants its own paragraph. We ordered the AWARD WINNING pumpkin chai pie. One bite, and I instantly understood why this masterpiece was a best seller. Light, fluffy, pumpkin (not over sweet) on a satisfying, creamy layer of chai filling on a ginger crust, topped with a dollop of fresh whipped cream. I would recommend this place for a first date or small group of friends (reservations are a must). Service - Our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly. She knew the menu well and when our meal came, she described what everything was on my plate. Food - Overall delicious. Food came out relatively fast. Price was amazing for how much food we got - everything below and draft beers were around $60. - Appetizer the goat samosas: Bomb. - Entree 1: Buttered Chicken. It was delicious and I was at first confused but the "butter" but the flavor was very satisfying. - Entree 2: The Thalis. Highly recommend getting one of these if you like to dabble in a little bit of everything. I ordered the Rancher and I loved everything it had going on. The naan that came with it was enough for my whole plate and I didn't have to order more. - Dessert - the bournvita ice cream sandwiches, filled with chocolate ice cream. As a semi-finalist for America's best New restaurant, I expect the best from Anita Jaisinghani. As much as I love Indika, the experience always lacked authenticity, but never uniqueness. Pondicheri is just flawless. From the location to the interior to the food, everything is topnotch. My server was very knowledgeable of the menu, didn't butcher the names of the dishes, and offered excellent substitution choices. I ordered the Rancher Thaali, a tasting platter of a few popular Indian traditional dishes prepared and presented in an authentic manner. The tandoori chicken was delicious paired with the lamb and the Keema(ground beef) was very flavorful, though it lacked a textural element such as potato or green peas. The naan was delicious, held up perfectly to the curries with the lamb and the chicken. The onion kulcha however was a bit more delicate so I enjoyed it by itself. I also ordered a side of raita to balance the high spice level in my entrés. Poured some over my rice and boy that took me back to my mother's cooking! Anita NEVER disappoints. I came here because two people heard about the hype and thought it was worth a visit. Im gonna start with what i do like : they start you off with this salty mixture of fried things with raisins, popcorn etc that is , albeit salty, very delicious. Pondicherry has a very colorful menu- the flavors appear to jump out at you from the menu. They have a nice wine selection and their drinks are unique and have that indian touch. They also appear to have good coffee, cookies, etc. The menu is simple and not confusing. The interior is indian-chic ( is that a word?)- it's very trendy. The things i didn't care for. 1- The taste: I got the rancher thali- the lamb keema and vegetables ( cucumber, salad) were good. The butter chicken- definitely didn't taste like it and there were 2-3 cubes of actual chicken. The rice, daal were okay. I also needed a little bit of yogurt- their yogurt wasn't indian dahi, it was maybe greek yogurt? anyway didnt really go too well with the food in my opinion and they charged me a dollar for 1 tablespoon- eye roll. 2- The price: food in the thali was exactly how it was described on the menu: a sampler.. but for 24$ which is expensive. Thali + glass of wine + tax= 52$.. for one person, thats insane. Anyway, i don't think it's a terrible place, its a smooth, easy introduction to indian food. read more

I have been coming here for years and the food is just very clever. I am shocked by the poor reviews from Indians who are looking for "authentic" food - this is better than most "authentic" restaurants in my view because it has inventive takes on traditional South Indian items. The morning thali is one of my favorite here - the carrot paratha is excellent as is thr saag. Traditionalists will likely not like the upma, but it is clever and it is pushing the envelope. Critics who say the food is "Americanized" aren't getting the point. read more

I felt that it was more on the westernized end but the food was very savory and we'll seasoned. I would recommend coming here for late dinner so you can skip the long wait time. Very enjoyable Indian food, especially for those new to Indian cuisine. I can't speak to its authenticity as I am not very familiar with Indian food, but Pondicheri makes some delicious food! The menu is a bit vague for us Indian-naive eaters, without much explanation as to what some of these dishes are, but luckily the staff is very knowledgable, friendly and more than happy to help. My tip: unless you have food allergies or severe disdain for certain ingredients, just go head first for a recommended dish--I like going for a sampler plate or even just the dish I understand the least amount of words! read more

What a terrific place. We live in New Orleans and can't get good Indian food there. I was really happy with our meal. The space is lovely, the service was attentive and helpful (even though it was the end of the evening). We had the fried chicken which uses a chickpea flour batter. Delicious. Juicy and super crunchy. It came with the most delicious dry fried okra. It was salty and cooked with chili and the seeds inside were crunch. Absolutely delicious (and I"m not an okra fan). We also had the chicken Samosa,and Egg Dosa. Both were fabulous. The samosa was especially good. The chicken was super flavorful and the case very crunchy. All in all quite lovely. We really enjoyed this meal. And I learned something new. At the beginning of the meal the give you some crunch salty snacks. Which included popped millet seeds. Like tiny kernels of popcorn. It consists of: Kachumber, vegetable, paratha, raita, & quinoa The spinach & greens portion was cold when the server brought it out, so I am assuming that they either microwave or use steam trays plus I noticed that myself and everyone else receives their food REALLY quickly--which would be impossible if everything was made fresh. The chocolate cookie was not that great either--it tasted like it had something odd/strange/weird added to it. At first I thought that maybe it was mint, but never quite figured it out. I thought it would like most other Indian restaurants, but was pleasantly surprised :) when I landed here. Starting from the ambiance to the menu itself. It seemed like a fusion with a twist of Indian flavors. I tried the Earth Thali because I happen to be a vegetarian and greedy ;) The only complaint I had was that the Paneer(cottage cheese) in white gravy was a little too sweet for me. The Naan (Bread), Salads, Sweet, Dal were all delicious. My husband liked the idea of the wine bottled water, we just made ours from our home :D. For dessert we had the three scoops of Bournvita, Mango and I forgot the last one :-o But me and husband both loved the ice creams, the texture was just great! Okay, so came here again because I cannot get enough of their carrot paratha. Their eggs masala dish now includes either the paratha, yogurt, OR potatoes for $8. Before, you got the paratha and chose either yogurt or potatoes for $8. So two side dishes down to one now for the same price. So this is where I knocked off a star because their menu pricing doesn't make sense. If you order the three eggs which you can have fried, masala, or scrambled, it's $5. Add on the carrot paratha for $2 and your total is $7..... So if you choose the masala eggs platter and get the carrot paratha, are they really going to charge you that extra $1 since the platter is $8? I don't get it. It's only a deal if you order the yogurt or potatoes which are $4. No biggie, but it's the principle of it all and I refuse to be overcharged due to a technical ordering method. Not only that, but the OCD in me is kicked up a notch because of this. On to the food: I ordered the eggs masala again with potatoes and paratha ($10 total, the cashier did the cheaper side, the paratha for $2, as the add-on) but requested egg whites which is no upcharge (awesome!) and it was still quite hearty and not overcooked. They do use oil to scramble it (I can tell); it's not excessive but it's not a light amount either. But its not creamed and buttered up like some other places that try to make up for the lack of yolks which defeats the whole purpose of ordering whites. During rush hour, they need some organization in keeping utensils and water stocked. They also need to fix the pricing. Then I'll give them back that last star. read more

I heard rave reviews about this place, about how it was just "soooo good." I guess that depends on your definition of good and what you're looking for. If you're looking for a trendy place with below mediocre, Indian fast food- then Pondicheri is right up your alley! Flavorless at best and overpriced at that. 2 star rating because we had good service and the atmosphere was cool. Appetizer: Papdi Chaat Main Course: Yogi Thali with smoked eggplant instead of the sauteed greens and my fiance ordered the Sayel Lamb with garlic naan and desi fries on the side What's disappointing is the food LOOKED amazing and yet everything was bland and had no taste. Indian food and bland should never be in the same sentence. The Yogi Thali, I honestly couldn't differentiate between ANY of the side dishes other than the soup and the vegetable curry. They were just OK- probably due to the fact that I hadn't eaten all day. The carrot naan that it came with was dry and flavorless. The garlic naan was better, but it was topped with A BUNCH of garlic, so if you like that sort of thing, I'd recommend that. Desi fries? Tasted like crunchy grease. I'm STILL wondering how some people said this place served "authentic" Indian food. Uummm, just no. It was more of an attempt to infuse their food with some sort of Indian flavor. I visited Pondicheri for the second time today. At a previous visit, I tried the potato cakes(Sabudana Vada) and the Khandvi. The Sabudana Vada were delicious, but the Khandvi was a sore disappointment. It was more of a stuffed Besan Chilla. Today, I tried Mango Pani Puri, Saag Paneer and Mango Kulfi and I'm glad I did. I'm a Pani Puri fiend and I prefer mine crazy spicy but the mango made for a really interesting addition to my favorite snack and I liked it. If they started offering desi-spice-level pani full of green chillies, I'd probably eat here every day :) Saag Paneer was delicious, tasted much like how I'd make it myself. Kulfi was okay. Randomly decided to try this place with my aunt one day. I was pleasantly surprised! The food was very good, and moderately priced. The pastries and desserts were delicious! One of my favorite spots to go to in Houston for a good atmosphere and Indian food. I haven't been in months, so I was surprised to find many changes in the menu besides the fact that it's a seasonal menu. The food was served quickly! I've been here a few times and this place never disappoints me. I really enjoyed their breakfast once when I had Beet Uttapam! This time, I came with a friend on a Monday and the menu was Meatless Monday! Even though I'm not a vegetarian, I appreciate that they have this option once a week. I ordered earth thali and my friend ordered paneer masala. We both enjoyed our dishes! I always like to order one of the thalis because I like the idea of sampler platters to try variety of dishes. The food as amazing and unique. We all generally order the same old thing when we go to an Indian restaurant but Pondicheri really makes you try new things and explore options you would normally never do. The menu is small and not so traditional. I hate lamb generally but the tandoori lamb was amazing. I can't say that for most places that I have been. I did miss the Chicken Tikka but the Butter Chicken was pretty amazing. Neat atmosphere. Definitely not your normal everyday Indian fare. Only complaint I have is that for Indian food it was very expensive. A little too pricey in my opinion. read more

I moved to Houston last week and I've already come to Pondicherry four times! I usually like to try new restaurants but I've just been so obsessed with everything about this place. I've had dinner downstairs in the main restaurant and had a working lunch upstairs in the bake lab. You can't beat the location, the ambiance, the knowledgeable and personable staff, and of the course the incredible food. You can get more traditional fare or you can try fun but delicious fusion dishes. I dream about their grilled cheese and tomato soup. I love that they have revolving items and use seasonal ingredients. They also have excellent chutneys and other foods that you can take home. I cannot wait to try their baked goods. Not only does it taste amazing but the presentation is incredible as well. Kelly and all the staff, you can tell work so incredibly hard but are so good at what they do. I had the fenugreek dumpling and I was very disappointed in the flavor. Very bland. My brother had the aviyal and it had a good flavor mix of Indian and Thai curry. The beet uttupam was an interesting texture and had good flavor, the waitress also said the uttupam is gluten free. For the price of the dishes, I was a bit disappointed in the flavor of mine and the aviyal was a bit small for $18, but had good flavor. read more

I came here for Sunday brunch and was initially concerned about the line, but since you order at the counter, and they bring the food to your table, there ended up not being much of a wait. Pondicheri is a really lovely, airy space with floor to ceiling windows. I tried the vegetarian morning thali; it was just OK - edible but nothing to write home about. I preferred my partner's paneer paratha, which was waaay more delicious. I would order that if I return again. read more

I was introduced to this place about three months ago and since then it's become one of my go to spots. Friendly staff and normal wait times during busy hours but food always comes out hot and fast. I have to say that my favorite thing about this place is the atmosphere. A perfect place for anything from an intimate lunch date to a late night meet up with friends after work. The menu may be a little overwhelming at first, especially if you're not familiar with Indian dishes but I am have to say everything I've tried has been great.
