Honestly wasn't that impressed. The decor here is really nice, it has the look of a really high end restaurant. Additionally, the lighting provides for a really good atmosphere, and it's nice enough to double as a date place as well as somewhere to go with friends. However, I was really not that impressed with the food I got. I ordered the earth thali which was a sampler of sorts that came with vegetable korma, butter chicken, mango celery salad, roasted eggplants, some fudge dessert thing (the name escapes me), carrot roti, and what the waiter described to me as vegetable fritters. These are all things you can order individually as well. Most of it was just average, aside from the vegetable korma and roasted eggplant which I really did not enjoy- there seemed to be some really heavy seasoning it that just came through way too strong. And for the whopping $15 that I had to spend I definitely did not feel as though I got my money's worth. Just in general, I think this place is a little too pricey for the quality of their food. The best thing about this place was the service, our waiter was really nice and our water was always filled. But if that's all, I think it might take some convincing to get me to come back again. read more

I wish I could've just sat here all day and had something for every meal. The menu boasts a variety of food and includes more than enough options for a vegetarian like myself. I came for breakfast and it took me almost 15 minutes to figure out what I wanted, but I ended up going with the Breakfast Green Dosa, Amchur potatoes, and Indian Drip Coffee. My total bill was $11 and I got more than my money's worth. The coffee was divine on its own and needed no cream/sugar. The potatoes were standard fried potatoes with seasoning. The dosa really stole the show for me. It was filled with a creamy coconut chutney and a spinach/onion mix. The sambhar it came with was easily the best I have ever tasted. Had this on my list of burgers to try. Mushroom lamb burger was great would come back many times to eat it again and again.

Personally, I think the decor of the place is done beautifully inside. The only thing is that walking inside, I felt like I had walked into a wall of curry. Or that someone had spilled several buckets of curry all over the floor that I could hardly breathe anything inside but curry. I didn't find it very pleasant and can only imagine the avid Indian cuisine lovers who eats Indian daily enjoying it. And so, I had to resign myself to eat outdoors. Perusing the menu, everything called for curry. No surprise there - it's Indian. As for the food, they came out a little different from traditional Indian that is found in restaurants. It's a little more authentic but also with little peculiar twists that deviates it from tradition. For example, the goat samosas are not uncommon in India - but really, this restaurant packs it thick and differently. Anyways, cutting this short - after ordering madras chicken wings, goat samosas, raita, naan, chicken burger, paneer curry, limca rancher thali bournvita ice cream, and chai pie - my findings is that this restaurant produces good food - not great food. Some of it is partly because there's a lot of acquired tastes to be had here when presented in a way that is both nontraditional and unfamiliar to Western expectations (like chai pie). By the way, the ice cream sandwich was yummy - it tastes like ice cream being sandwiched with Maria cookies. Side notes: excellent and friendly service, ingredients are of good quality, no working heat lamps, inconsistent coffee, and items on a slightly pricey side. read more

Ehmagawd. Noms. Pondicheri is a really lovely place with great service, great atmosphere, and great flavor. It's definitely fusion, so come in with an open mind as you order and anticipate flavors. Personally, I think what they have done is beautiful and truly artistic. Pondi is one of the places that makes me happy to be a foodie. Now that I've praised the place to death, let me tell you why. The menu is large, and has a lot of options. My favorite is the Thalis, which are essentially sample platters. This is a great way to get exposure to a lot of flavors and some nice variety. They are really good about allowing substitutions, so if you don't really love the sampler they have you can feel free to try something else. Also, the samosas are some of the best I've had. The goat samosas were SO flavorful, deep fried without being greasy, very meaty, and the crispy outside had hints of sesame and turmeric. I can only describe it as artistic. Furthermore, the butter chicken curry is quite good, as is their barley salad. I prefer the barley salad to the pondicheri salad, as I believe it has more cohesive flavors and a lighter dressing. The value of the food, for the price, is incredible. The service is also great. Everything is served on these beautiful silver tins, and even the check comes out beautifully plated. Nice restaurant but the food was just "okay" in my opinion. We randomly stopped in for dinner unplanned. Aviyali was highly recommended as vegan dish it wasn't bad but it wasn't great. Perhaps it's an acquired taste. Overall great service and friendly waitstaff but the food was mediocre. It was ok. I don't really care for Indian food, and this pre Good Friday church dinner wasn't suggested by me, but for a first time feast eating "Indian" that I can recall, I'll give it about a 3. I ordered the #Earth, which looked like a sampler plate. It wasn't awful, but I only ate from it the butter chicken, and the chick peas and pita. In all it was just ok, rather spicy, however food-wise, not my thing. I also ordered a cheese and spinach samosa, and I again wasn't too pleased. I probably should've gotten the corn and veggie one, But I listened to our waitress rave about how good the "Saag Paneer" was, thus took her word. I'm not opposed to coming back, yet if I do I'll keep it simple and order the wings and a side of turmeric rice. Service-wise our waitress was pretty good. Ok I was extremely disappointed with this restaurant. #1. I had to ask my waiter for water after being seated for 10minutes #2. None of our dishes had any inkling of curry as it was described on the menu. #3. My lamb tandoori was way over cooked, burnt and cold. It tasted like it was sitting there for most of the day. Then my wife vegetable roti had tons of celery in it, which to me is not authentic. #4. We start at the table and no one ever came over to ask if everything is ok or even clear the table. The below 4 star rating is pretty surprising.. especially considering Pondi is always busy on the weekends. I love this place! Without fail I come here pretty much every weekend for the bake labs avocado toast. It is sooo good, def the best avocado toast in Houston. I also love that they always add seasonal fruits to the toast- anything from passion fruit to mango. The portion size is good too, although I think depending on which end of the sourdough you get sometimes the portion is smaller. I've also had the veggie samosas before which were delicious. The only thing I wasn't a big fan of was the oatmeal from the downstairs restaurant. The customer service here is always friendly and they get your order out quickly. They also have a covered and dog friendly patio which is awesome. Would highly recommend coming here for take out or dine in. read more

I've come here a few times, lunch and dinner, and have really enjoyed everything I've ordered. For as fancy as the area and shopping complex is, they have some excellent, casual prices. This would be a great date place during anytime of day. My most recent visit I ordered the butter chicken and pav bhaji. Butter Chicken - Although the serving size of the butter chicken was a bit small, it was one of the best I've had in Houston. The garlic naan was excellent as well. Pondicheri is a great alternative or introduction to Indian food for the non true / die hard Indian food connoissoeurs. The menu and food selection is friendly and they provide a nice assortment of choices from the Thalis, Frankies, and Curries (you'll have to go there to see what I mean), in addition they have a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu's that add another assortment of choices. The place has a nice casual ambience with the build out of bright fabric, stone, and metal design scheme that's well blended, imho. Along with food choices they also have good beverage choices from wines, beers and housemade drinks. This place deserves 6 stars. The ambiance and the decor is absolutely beautiful. I can here during brunch and it was a little noisy. The mimosas you could get by the carafe which was perfect for brunch. The individual dishes were large enough to share. I love, love, love Pondicheri. Their food is incredible- so much so, that we hosted our wedding reception there. The event planner (Mary) was absolutely amazing. She was very detail oriented and made sure our dinner was perfect! My faves are the crab dahi puri- the puris are made with squid ink and it's filled with crab and mango chutney (SO delicious and our guests loved it), the lamb nihari- nihari is one of my favorite dishes and their nihari is so flavorful (if you don't want the curry, get the lamb shank at least!), and the frankies are delicious if you go during lunch. Very filling. Make sure you get dessert. Every dessert if had there is incredible, but their chocolate cake is to die for. Great service and great food- definitely go here! read more

For years i've had this place on my list of place to try in Houston list. Finally got the chance to recently but I came very disappointed. Let me start of by saying that I thought the service was great. The food however was a different story. I had the special of the day which was Vindaloo Ribs. It came some Pakora on the side. My first bite was of the Pakora. It was the worst Pakora i've ever tasted in my life. Way overdone and dry. Super Crispy but also SUPER DRY. This had to have been a mistake in the kitchen and someone had to have overcooked it. i looked over to try the ribs next and I was still upset about the Pakora. I was thinking how my whole plate was just dark brown. The Ribs were definitely spicy and had a kick as expected since they were "Vindaloo Style". I thought they were good for the first few ribs but about halfway through the flavors just got boring for me and I got tired of the dish. My friend had the Earth Thali. Way better then my dish but I thought it was just average. Nothing really stood out from the different items in the Thali. Based on first try, it seems overrated but I'll come back to give it another try but how do you mess up Pakora?? Still trying to figure that out lol read more

The food here is incredible! We go the samosas as an appetizer and they were delicious - I'd never had them before but they tasted really fresh and good. I ordered the vegetable Frankie, which I would best describe as sort of an Indian-style burrito. I got it with the desi fries (paired with the Pondicheri curry ketchup), which made for the perfect combo of sweet and spicy. The service was great; our waiter was super friendly albeit a bit distracted. Also, the venue was really cool. It was very trendy feeling, and even though the setup of the tables made it feel slightly cluttered, the ambiance made up for it. I'd definitely go back. Our friends invited us to Pondicheri for dinner. On a Sunday night, the parking was plentiful in the garage. The restaurant is kind of dark when you enter. When we came in, the staff immediately told us their credit machine had an issue which was nice of them. Our friends arrived and we ordered a few Indian pancakes and some other appetizer that had naan and onions. My husband and I ordered the different Thallis. Mine was the rancher and it was spicy even though I wanted mild. All in all, the food was nothing that we hadn't eaten on hillcroft but we paid about twice the price for it with no leftovers. Craving Indian chicken, we decided to drop by Pondicheri to satisfy our hunger and check out the architecture also! The pivot door was definitely a highlight! As for the food...we heard the butter chicken was amazing. Too bad us non-HOUSTON natives aren't familiar with a lot of restaurants here and went on MEATLESS MONDAY. I convinced my sister to stay because it was a great opportunity to be "forced" to try different Indian food besides tandoori and whatnot. Peanut Noodles - they were alright, more on the meh side. The load of fancy ingredients for the dish made it hard to dig for the noodles alone. Dosa - this was my first time getting dosa! I chose mushroom and cheese filling. It was huge and left me bloated! The filling was with spinach I believe so it tasted like a regular omelette I would usually make, without the eggs. Garlic Naan - the garlic aroma wasn't strong enough for me. It was loaded with fresh garlic though but biting into pieces of garlic without the garlic aroma wasn't pleasant. Mango soda w/ blueberries - tasted like mango purée in carbonated water with fresh, whole blueberries in it. I'm almost certain it was just that. I was hoping the blueberries would be blended into the drink for more UMPH. Our waiter was amazing though! I had been hearing about this place for quite some time, so we finally decided to check it out. We came at about noon on a Sunday and it was fairly crowded, but the service was quick. First off, let me mention that this is a counter service joint where you get a number and wait for the food to be delivered to your table. I definitely wasn't expecting that, but it allowed the flow of traffic to go much faster and smoother, so it's understandable. Now to the food. The menu is rather extensive with various types of Indian cuisine, which is foreign to me so I had to rely on pictures and word of mouth to determine what to order. I settled on the goat samosas and the barley salad with curry shrimp added. The spices on the shrimp were divine and the shrimp were monstrous. The goat samosas had a crispy flax like crust and a yogurt dipping sauce that made a great pairing. My husband got the rancher thali and he ate every morsel. He is more of an Indian food lover than I am and he thoroughly enjoyed his dish, especially the butter chicken. Overall, the prices were high..but the food was exceptional. We probably won't be back frequently due to cost, but it will most definitely be a treat from time to time. I highly recommend the samosas and Thali for a first time visit. TBH I've only been to the bake lab on the 2nd floor, so this review currently only encompasses that experience. The pastry selection is wide and enticing, although the prices are pretty steep. I had a chocolate hazelnut cookie, which was huge in terms of cookie size and a bit rich for me. However, the earl grey iced tea was also a great option, and with one refill, it can keep you fueled through a long conversation or study session. The service here was very friendly, and the man at the register (John?) didn't seem to mind that we had camped out for a bit to take care of some work. Seating is pretty limited, and so are outlets, and it can become a bit loud inside with all the commotion. It isn't an ideal space for concentration-intensive work, but I will return for the great service, atmosphere, and the bakery. read more

The decor at Pondicheri was gorgeous and the crowd size was quite nice. When you walk in you see their fresh made sweet treats that can be purchased upon checkout. Well I was only able to make it here for dessert and was told my my community manager Farrah A. that I must try the chai pie, well I did and I tried the Authentic Kulfi, the cafe Annie Brownie and Bournvita Ice Cream Sandwiches. They were all fantastic. The Chai pie tasted just like chai tea, I would give a smaller portion as mine was quite large. The Kulfi came in 5 rounds, I am assuming to share them. With not being familiar with Indian desserts and was shocked at how sweet and thick it was. It was good but really all I needed was one bite. The Ice cream sandwich and brownie were a hit also. The Ice cream sand which was very soft, large portion though. I will have to come back for dinner as I heard lunch prices were INSANE in the membrane. read more

I used to love going here when they had "Meatless Monday's". They've since switched to what they all over sell. They will say "We're so proud of our new menu now, that we don't need different menu's. Our menu now includes enough vegetarian and otherwise dishes we no longer need to differentiate between days of the week." It's total crap. Just go look at the menu us vegetarians have now. I've been doing the vegan thing for a while, and I can spot meat BS from a mile away. They're all about Meat BS. Let's say what we really mean. Pondichrio were having to turn away too many people on the one day a week you didn't serve meat. As always the profits won over the minority of people that actually enjoyed going on Monday. read more

It is very rare that my wife and I get a "date-night" to ourselves when we visit Houston. So when the stars aligned, my wife knew *exactly* where she wanted to go: Pondicheri. It had been on her list for a while and we love Indian food. The wait for our table wasn't too bad and we kind of knew what we wanted. Our server was pretty quick to take our order of a mix of appetizers, some sides, and a main course. The first set of starters came out closely followed by the next. All was seeming well and good until we were waiting for our meal. We waited... And waited... And waited... And waited... Finally, the server came over and said she didn't know what was taking so long but she would go look into it. So we kept waiting... And waiting... Then the manager came over and apologized and said he would get to the bottom of it. So we waited some more... Finally, some food came. Only, it wasn't what either of us had ordered!!! After eventually flagging down the server, we asked what it was: "It's such and such". Ok, I didn't order that! So we waited some more. And kept waiting... I had to actually get up and go feed the meter since this had now taken 3x as long as expected and still no food. Finally, when I got back, my hastily-made meal was ready. But where was my wife's? Nope, not coming. So while my food got cold, we again flagged the server, and then we waited more for my wife's food. It finally arrived and we were able to eat. The manager had asked us if we wanted dessert which we foolishly accepted because can you guess what that led to? MORE WAITING! Thankfully the only thing we didn't have to wait for was the check. The manager comped the meal. So, that is why I am only giving Pondicheri 2 stars. The food was good saving it from 1-star. Had we not had to wait, and considering the (higher) cost, it would have been 3-4 stars. The food was *nothing* like any Indian food I've had in America or even (Northern) India. But for all I know, it is authentic for Pondicheri (the city). So I can't speak to authenticity, but once the food eventually came, it was good. Some items were saltier than I would have liked but the flavors and spice levels were good. I presume our experience was the exception but be warned it could happen to anyone. read more

As I am not a frequent eater of Indian cuisine, this is a really great place as entry level for those newbs like myself. Upon arriving on a Sunday evening, it doesn't seem really busy but we still had to wait like 20 mins to be seated. Hostess was off her game, didn't ask us for our names to be on the waitlist or anything. Nor were we actually greeted, took a few mins just for anyone to acknowledged us. Besides an uncomfortable welcoming, the food was pretty yum. Everything sure packed a punch though! Those Indian spices can be overwhelming for nonspicy foodie like myself. Haha so yeah I chugged my ice tea! Btw their ice tea has a hint of cinnamon so that was super nice touch. Loved it. Even asked one for to go. Honestly, this place was great. However, service was definitely not it's strong point. As we sat down and proceeded to discuss the menu, random hand came across my face pouring water into our cups. It would of been nice if he had pardon himself for his reach or what not. It was just like out of nowhere. No words said. After that, our actual server did the exact same thing. Just proceeded to pour the snacks on the table without even greeting us or even told us her name. So both times, just literally rude. It's not hard to say "excuse me, pardon me" or even a simple "hello." As we proceeded to order, everything seemed fine. But she never came back. Pretty much took our orders, food came out and that was that. I didn't get a refill for my ice tea until the end of my meal when I had asked for it to go. Food is amazing! Drinks are great, environment is casual but you feel like a million dollars in this place. We had the Vindaloo Ribs and nearly fell out of our chairs. Spicy and so tender, the meat just fell off the bone. Morgan's Blueberry Sparkle was the perfect pairing, perfect for a summer day in Houston. We will definitely be going back to try more. I visited this restaurant with friends for a weeknight dinner and we were all impressed! We sat on the patio and it was very nice. We started out with cocktails, they ordered the sangria while I ordered the patio spritz. My friends said their sangria was quite strong but delicious and my patio spritz was basically aperol spritz - so pretty good! We sat outside and had issues with bugs getting onto the fruit in our drinks but didn't want to complain. We ordered a vegetarian and a chicken samosa for appetizers. Each order of samosa came with only one which we felt was odd. They weren't small but also not big enough to only come in an order of one in my opinion. The vegetarian was very good and my friends report the chicken was also good! I ordered the avuri (coconut sauce, veggies, rice) while my friends ordered the seafood platter and the butter chicken. All of us thoroughly enjoyed the main course. We also ordered a garlic naan to split and with the meal it was more than enough for the three of us to share. The garlic naan was more traditional and herb-y and slightly bitter rather than buttery like you get at some places so keep that in mind. Our waiter was fine and not rude or anything but we didn't see him again after our food came out and he asked how it was until we were getting the check an hour and a half later. The day I went there the manager or the owner (I'm not sure) was soooo rude with my husband and I. When we were on the table, she came to us, asking in a rude way why we were on that table, my husband and I didn't understand the question because clearly someone seated us there. I really wanted to love this place but sadly I didn't. I came here for breakfast and tried the railway omelette with a paratha, freshly squeezed orange juice, and a side order of the dosa. The omelette was painfully bland. The spinach paratha was not bad but if I am going out to eat then I want to enjoy my food and I expect it to be better than something that I can make. It was a little too doughy for my taste. The best part was the orange juice. Lastly - the reason for such a low rating ... my side of dosa came with nothing. In all my life I have never had a dosa that was not served with chutneys. Or at least if you are going to serve a dosa by itself then at least someone at the counter should ask if you'd like any chutneys along with it. I went back inside after taking a couple of bites of the hard to swallow "fermented rice & lentil crêpe with gunpowder masala" and asked if they forgot to give me chutneys. The lady at the counter apologized and told me that it doesn't come with any. She told me the three different chutneys that I could order from and I went with the tamarind and the cilantro ones. The food runner walked around, inside and out, carrying the chutneys and I had to go inside and ask him if he was looking for me. Either I forgot to pick up a number or she didn't give me one because I clearly remember her telling me that she'll bring them to me. This breaks my heart because I have such fond memories of eating here when they first opened. Maybe breakfast is not their forte. read more
