This place is a very consistent sushi fix. It's really close to my campus, so I find myself venturing here often for some raw fish. Hands down the worst sushi experience my fiancee and I have ever had!!! We went on a saturday night at 8pm and the place was dead quiet - should have been our first warning sign. We had several sushi rolls - The X Max Maki, The Patriot Maki, The Godzilla Maki and the Four Seasons Maki. We only managed to eat 2 pieces of each before we were so grossed out and turned off that we quickly got our check and left. The rolls all smelled SUPER fishy, tasted off and looked a little gray (especially the Tuna). Within an hour of leaving the place, both of us were bent over various toilets throwing up and dealing with the runs and stomach cramping. It's been over 24 hours and we're still both laid up and feeling terrible. On top of that, the check came out to over $60. Not affordable at all, given how terrible the quality and service were. Save yourself the trip and stomach pains and go to somewhere like Fins in Cleveland Circle or Fugakyu in Coolidge Corner. read more

The first time I dined here, I would have given five stars because I found the food so outstanding. But my most recent visit (which I believe was my 5th visit) may well by my last. The food is still quite good, but the service, atmosphere, and prices made me deduct three stars (actually, 2.5 -- if there was an option for 2.5 stars, I'd give it, but I'm rounding down). The decor is no different than it ever was, but somehow it depressed me this time. There's no warmth or comfort with the cavernous ceilings, bad lighting, noisy open kitchen. And you pass through a gross little hallway to get to the bathrooms. It feels like a Chinese food take-out joint. So onto the service. We had a sullen young man who made it clear when it was convenient for him to come by and take our order. It was the opposite of inattention ... he had no patience. He wanted to take a drink order as soon as we sat down. OK, that's not the worst thing. But if you are familiar with Ponzu's menu, you'll know it's quite extensive. We needed a few minutes to figure out our order, and it was pretty clear since we were studying the menu. But here comes the grumpy guy, and he planted himself at our table with his notepad open. He's ready to take our order. But we're not ready and need a few more minutes. "Uh, OK." OK, so strike #2 for grumpy guy waiting on us -- he had an itchy trigger finger for clearing our tables. Not such a problem until he asks me if I want another beer, which I did not. However, my lone beer had a few swigs left in it ... and when you're having just one beer, those swigs count! Well, guess what he did. When he heard I wasn't having another, he picked up my bottle ... FINGERS ON THE LIP OF THE BOTTLE ... but when he realized I wasn't done, he said, "uh, sorry, you're still working on that?" I'm usually not an a-hole to waitstaff, but I shot back at him, "well, not ANYMORE since you've just touched it!" A good waitperson would have offered to bring me another one (not that I'm the type of a-hole who waits for that sort of thing to happen), but he really didn't care. There was one other waitperson working who would bring some of our dishes, a woman who seems to maybe own or manage the place, perhaps. She was efficient and much more on the ball than then sullen young man. She took our bill after we filled out the credit slip; the first thing she did was open it up right in front of us to see the tip. Strike 3. The food was good, but not as fabulous as I remember it. The wasabi pork dumplings were wonderful as always. I know this is a very negative review; but the quality of the food was not worth the price and poor service/atmosphere. Personally I would give this place 0 stars if I could based on one horrible experience, but since my wife really loves the sushi I'll round up to 2 stars. Let me start with the good - apparently the sushi is the best around Waltham, certainly better than some of the other options on Moody St. While they don't have a gluten free menu they are accommodating and are sure to leave out the imitation crab meat and other sources of gluten. If you're like me and you stay away from raw fish you might want to stay away from this place completely. I ordered chicken teriyaki and it was honestly the saltiest thing I've ever eaten in my entire life. It tasted alright at first, but halfway through the meal my stomach hurt so bad and I couldn't eat any more even though I was still hungry. I'm not sure if my sauce was laced with extra salt/MSG by accident or if this is how they normally serve food, but I certainly won't be back to try again. read more

I won't even use the groupon I just bought... The customer service here is atrocious. As a person who has worked customer service all her life, I couldn't believe this. I didn't realize the groupon was dine-in only and I have a puppy at home I can't leave for very long. I asked very nicely if just this one time they'd allow someone to do pick-up, that'd I'd tip whoever, I'd be out of their hair in no time, I really can't leave the house for that extended of a time, so please this one time? I was told no, which was fine, but I asked if I could speak with a manager, as sometimes the front desk folks really don't have the authority. I was told it was the manager's day off. I asked if there was a floor manager, or head of wait staff, I was told no. I asked if there was anyone else working there who might help me (in a nice way!), and I was told no. Let me just start off by saying I have probably been to hundreds of sushi restaurants all over the northeast for the past decade since I've moved around a lot. That being said, I found Ponzu through a friend that used to live in Belmont a few years ago and it is still hands down my favorite sushi restaurant. I now live in Brookline, my friend lives in Chelmsford, and we still frequent this place. Their appetizers and small raw plates are all delicious (my favorites include the mango salad with salmon, the tuna lollipops and the miso tuna salad). The rolls are all very creative and definitely what keeps me coming back. The volcano roll will change your life, it is 100x better then volcano rolls are other places. it's made with salmon in the middle, the pieces are piled up and then coated with a mountain of torched lava made from scallops, tempura flakes, spicy mayo and a mild cheese. Yes, cheese. Don't knock it til you try it! The Filet Mignon roll is amazing as well, it's a great option of someone that doesn't want to eat raw fish. It's deep fried with rare Filet Mignon and cream cheese in the middle, its like a sushi version of a hot cheese steak. Other favorite rolls include the ocean, dragon, goldfish, patriots and red sox maki (and I'm a yankees fan, just FYI!). I've only had a few of the non-sushi dishes, they were pretty good. I pretty much only come here for the sushi, but when you have people in your party that don't eat sushi, they're plenty of great options available. The service is quick and the waitresses are nice. Desserts are nothing special but they have some available just in case you didn't already stuff yourself beyond you're stomach's capacity. Definitely will be coming here for a long time. read more

I'm glad I went before reading the reviews because now I feel gypped for not getting a free appetizer!!! We went on a spur of the moment whim. My folks were in town and we were looking on Moody Street for somewhere to go. We almost went to Margaritaville but my parents are definitely Asian food eaters mostly, so we decided to give Ponzu a shot. First positive - they sat us in the back, oh, did I mention I had my two toddlers with us? So I didn't feel so bad when they were up and walking around and generally being messy toddlers since there was no one else sitting back there! Second positive - our waitress was very friendly and patient with us when we had special requests like bringing the kids meal first, constant requests for more napkins and water after the kids spilled things... Third positive - the food was excellent!!! My dad (who is a very picky eater), got the beef broccoli dish which was beautifully arranged (a plus for him!) and the food was quite well flavored and delicious! My husband got some sort of coconut curry dish which he said was great. My mom got some sort of pork dumpling dish that she loved. And me? Well, I braved it and ordered some sushi! I tried the uni shooter. If you are a fan of uni, you gotta try this! I usually can never find a place that serves uni in anything but just straight up nigiri style, so I had to try this! It came in a little port glass and it had uni, some tobiko, a quail egg and in a vinegary-soy type of sauce. DELICIOUS!!! I gave my dad the other one and he loved it too! I ordered a smattering of other sushi and found each to be fresh, and tasty! Fourth positive - even dessert was good! They had mochi ice cream (which of course my kids ate before I could!) and their red bean ice cream was quite delicious! The negatives? Well, I was overwhelmed by their menu, I found it confusing and almost too descriptive. While I liked their idea and fusion restaurants are notoriously difficult, I think they need to pare down some of their menu choices and make it easier to read. Since they are relatively new, maybe now they have been in business long enough to know what works and what doesn't work so well and just focus more on the dishes that are really good. Atmosphere was fine. Good service (the place was pretty dead though). We ordered an assortment of rolls, nigiri, and some other cooked dishes shrimp tempura and I'm not sure what our non'sushi lover ordered. I've eaten a good deal of sushi at various places and later that evening I got home and felt terrible. I was in the bathroom for most of the evening and now it's the next morning and my stomach still doesn't feel right. Now if could have been the friend shrimp - just too much grease for me. But I'm pretty sure it was the seaweed salad. When i tasted it it didn't taste great. thought they just did something a bit different to it. but then i noticed it seemed slimier than usual and there was a bunch of liquid in the bottom of the bowl. So i'm pretty sure it was old and got me sick. I only had a few bites of it as well. also i talked to one of my fellow diners the next day and she said her stomach bothered her as well. anyway, i won't be back. and honestly this evening out might have ruined my taste for sushi for a while. how unfortunate. read more

I wish the food lived up to the decor! This place is nice inside. Very zen (and I'm NOT zen at all) - relaxing, enjoyable, not too loud, but not pin-drop quiet. The waterfall is nice touch and the lights are cool. But the food...not so much. I had the Sesame Duck. Honestly, it tasted like it was three days old. The meat was tough and the sauce was gooey. Imagine if Paula Deen decided to be a sushi chef...so then you can understand why certain people would find this place the perfect fusion of comfort food and sushi. Ponzu has taken an interesting angle at making sushi with no fear of grease or traditional Japanese cuisine. My friends and I ordered a variety of rolls. The kimchee roll was pretty tasteless and almost insulting since kimchee and plain rice is considered peasant food in the motherland. I don't remember what my other rolls were...but I do remember rice slathered in mayonnaise and trussed up in fried tempura flakes. Kind of gross but sickeningly addictive and...guiltily satisfying...kind of like eating McDonald's (after watching Super Size Me). The prices are very reasonable and the decor is bright, clean, modern, and tastefully executed. The menu is very extensive and interesting. Ponzu certainly has potential so I'm eager to see what kind of monstrosity they will hurl in the face of what we used to know as sushi. read more

My dad and I scheduled to meet up tonight for a quick bite to as I traveled up to Portsmouth yet again. We were in the mood for something different, and sushi definitely fit the bill, throw in a Groupon conveniently available and Ponzu was the easy choice. We met up and headed in. We were greeted and immediately seated at a table adjacent to the sushi bar. We decided to split 2 entrees so we could sample different things. We went with the Ultimate Roll Combo which consists of "One yellowtail with mango & avocado, one spicy tuna with jalapeno, & one salmon with cucumber & jicama". I'm not going to pretend to be a sushi snob who can accurately break separate them ... but they all tasted good to me. We also went with General Gau's Chicken which was in a tangy sauce with rice (essentially the Japanese version of General Tso's). The chicken chunks were good sized, with a light batter. There was a decent amount of both chicken and broccoli and the sauce was plenty flavorful. All in all Ponzu was good and I'd definitely eat there again. read more

2 1/2 stars. I have a Love-Hate relationship with this place. Can the 3-stars stand for "mediocre" instead of "A-ok"? Cuz then I'd give it 3-stars. Sometimes the service and the rolls are just perfect. Other times, they both suck and you wish you just ate whatever you have at home... even if you're just down to having only random condiments in your fridge. Top picks (usually): I stick with the rolls, even though they're somewhat expensive... - dragon: avocado, eel, etc... - volcano: spicy mayo and scallops - soft shell crab The large dishes are always a let-down for me. Whether duck or beef, the sauce is always gross - too soy saucy and oily - and sometimes, randomly, overly sweet in an uncalled for way. Green tea pots are also hit-or-miss. (I didn't, but just a word to the wise) Don't order wine here, even though it's offered. When the waitress says they have "pino grease" (she means pinot gris) available, you know you're not in the right place for prime grapes. Service also usually sucks if they think you're not going to order a lot. If you do order a lot, then the owner-looking lady gives you a giant smile and a thank you. Whatever... The service is excellent, the food is always delicious, and they have great lunch specials. I've tried a variety of sushi and the salmon teriyaki is delish. I came here with friends a few days ago, and I was not at all impressed. The sushi was ok. I got the Pink Lady roll, and I liked the soy paper wrapper with the different kinds of fish inside. There are better places to go for sushi, but Ponzu wasn't terrible. I'd get the sushi again. However, I could do without the service. The service was absolutely terrible. The waitress was impatient and made a few faces at us. One of our friends had a gluten allergy and was trying to clarify that something didn't have any wheat. They didn't seem happy to help or to work with her to make sure what she got was gluten free (this is where we got one of the faces). I might come back if my friends want to eat here; however, it's kind of out of the way for me, so I would not come back by myself. While I did enjoy the Pink Lady roll, it's not worth driving all the way out to Waltham for--especially since I can get better sushi closer to home. Since I first reviewed Ponzu, I have up-ed my attendance to about once or twice ever week or so. It is a quick, easy, and consistently tasty place to grab dinner. My faves include the tofu with brown sauce (add cashews), the red coconut curry with coconut rice, the veggie maki rolls, the crispy bean curd with peanut sauce, the veggie egg rolls, and now the Malaysian Indian style noodles with veggies. Although I have had several run ins with the head hostess... she doubled charged my card on three separate occasions... The staff is friendly and remembers your favorite dishes. I've walked by this restaurant for about a good year now before I finally went in for dinner one night! I was having a HORRIBLE day, and needed a pick me up. I was hankering for some good Asian food, I was in Waltham, and decided - what the heck. And... surprisingly good! I was also a bit taken aback on how... starkish/coldish the dining room area was since it just always looked so cozy in the window. But whatever, I needed to get my eat on. Started with the seafood kimchee soup which was perfectly suited to my Korean tastebuds. I loved it. Totally hit the spot on a cold and dreary day. Honestly, I can't really imagine any non-Koreans enjoying this though... kimchee soup is definitely an acquired taste! Ordered the General Gau's chicken (I know, I know... but I was TOTALLY craving General Gau's!), and it was... awesome. Best Chinese takeout food I've had in Waltham. Best Chinese takeout I've had in Boston I want to say. My friend picked up their menu on our way out since he was like, "Dude... that was actually tasty Chinese food. I gotta come back." I purposely waited a long time to write this review. A long, long time. I first went to Ponzu in 2010 when I first moved to the area. The funny thing is that the reason I waited to write this review wasn't because the experiences were inconsistent, but rather I kept hoping it would get better. First things first. I really enjoy their food. I tend to stick with sushi, but have also had a few of their entrees and everything has been delicious. The food is not their problem. For me the service, atmosphere, and price is what brings the score down. I like the decorations and setup inside, but I always feel a bit awkward because often I will be the only person or party there and the waitresses and waiters will just stand around chatting or even worse - staring and waiting. Several times I've walked in and the staff will be congregated in the front area chatting but will fall silent the minute we walk in and remain so for the course of the meal. It's awkward and feels like I'm intruding. To avoid that I now only go during peak hours and I have always received efficient and decent service. Not a lot of pleasantries or smiles, but they get the job done and are attentive. Prices are on point for some of the entrees but the sushi and sashimi is over priced for the area. I think the sushi chef is extremely talented and love their sushi - but the reality is that I can get the same quality sushi for less money only three blocks away. At a place near easily accessible parking. Those are two major reasons I tend to skip Ponzu. Their sashimi is delicious and has always tasted fresh but the portions are about 1/2 the size of those at other places I frequent. Nothing is too outrageously over priced, and there are some cheaper items to balance it out (Ponzu roll!). However I think they would benefit from a mild drop in price or mild increase in portion size. Gotta stay competitive! Overall - great food, nice decor, and good location if you're looking to do a little bit of shopping or see a movie. Just be prepared to pay a bit more than other local alternatives and receive efficient, but not especially friendly, service. read more

I gotta say, I love this place. I'm a huge fan of the interesting cuisine they have there. Not a lot of places in the Boston area have Malay influences, especially infused with Sushi, etc. Last time I went, I got the steamed vegetable dumplings (which are fantastic), some vege sushi rolls, and a vegetable stir fry with red coconut curry. I thought it was amazing, and the left overs were even better the next day. Plus, the set-up is very relaxing. It's got a good decorative vibe, and an open kitchen. I never eat at places without an open kitchen, especially places where they serve raw meat. It was spotless and well laid out. I'm a pretty big critic of asian places because some of them can really shaft the vegetarian/vegan, but this place took a lot of time to come up with some really decent options for someone like me. read more

A new addition to Moody Street (opened in May I guess), this place has won a place in my heart. The menu consists of Asian-inspired dishes, from many regions: Japanese, Thai, chinese, etc. There are two main sections on the menu "smaller dishes" and "larger dishes". Really, this means appetizers and meals. We started with wasabi crab rangoons, filet mignon tataki, and one of the maki rolls to share among the four of us. They were all REALLY good. The rangoons were overflowing with really creamy crab/cream cheese filling with a tiny kick of wasabi. You could see and taste the texture of the crab which was nice. It was served with a pineapple cream sauce which finished it perfectly. Filet mignon tataki...what an idea. The next level of beef tataki, how can you go wrong? The maki was amazing as well, although I can't remember which one we got. For my meal, I chose the Creamy Red Curry Chicken dish, which came with coconut rice. A nice dish of chicken and potatoes in a red curry sauce, with a slight amount of spice to it. I would have liked it to have more kick (I like the heat), and perhaps some other vegetables in the dish, but over all, a great dish! My fiance got the Maki Plate, which was a large assortment of mixed maki. All was very fresh, beautifully presented, and extremely tasty. Our other friends got a Lamb dish and the seafood udon pad thai style dish. Both raved about them. The seafood udon pad thai style dish is my friend's three favorite things all in one dish. She was in heaven. The dinner ended in a complimentary dish of red bean dessert soup of some kind. It was warm, and slightly sweet. Very pleasant. We tried to put our finger on a taste that we recognized in it, but couldn't. The environment is very inviting. Nice big sushi bar is the focal point of the room, but there is plenty of table seating as well. Although a drop ceiling would help them in hiding the bright aluminum heating ducts, they've done a really nice job decorating. Our waitress was extremely nice and helpful. When I asked for low sodium soy sauce, she brought some promptly, and asked if we would like to try the "white soysauce": something new they just got in, and she hadn't tried yet. I would recommend it! It was a little sweeter, and more subtle. Very pleasant. For the appetizers, meals, and a drink per person, this four person meal came to just over 100 bucks before tip. Very reasonable. Bottom line, this place is a very unique and well put together place. For those who like asian cuisine in all of its forms, go try this place!! read more

This was pretty much one of my first sushi experiences. I didn't order it but tried a piece from a coworker and wasn't sure what to think (since then I've developed a taste for it thankfully!) But what I did order was amazingly delicious. I think back on it sometimes and I'm like "man, I gotta go find that place again and get that!" The waitstaff was pleasant, the food was incredibly delicious, the atmosphere was neat, if not a bit cramped-feeling. I tried a salt-crusted grilled salmon one time, and the teriyaki chicken another. Went there on a Saturday nite and the place was crowded. We had 20 peeps and they said they could seat us a several different tables. However, we thought it would take a lot longer to seat us than it actually did. They serve asian tapas and other dishes as well. The dishes in red are the spicy dishes. Their menu consists of asian fushion and sushi. We didn't try any sushi that nite. Service was decent, water was refilled. We ordered 2 appetizers (tapas) and 2 entrees which came out to $53 with tax b4 tip. I think we could have used one more entree or appetizer for the 4 of us. We got vegetables with curry sauce (brown) and it was good, had a little kick to it. And we got the seafood w/ taro root which was good also. We mistakenly went here for their Asian fusion dishes, and not the sushi as someone in our party had fish allergies (I know, poor planning). The server had no idea what we were talking about when we asked if they could prepare vegetarian rolls on a different cutting board from the fish, and then gave us the stink eye for the rest of the night. The entrees were genuinely lackluster and were principally comprised of the FROZEN VEGETABLES medley that you can get at the grocery. The only reason that I'm generously giving Ponzu 2 stars instead of 1, is because their salmon skin roll was actually pretty good, which leads me to believe that their Asian fusion menu needs to be cut down and they should concentrate on where they can really shine: Sushi. read more

Perhaps it was a bit of an off day, but I had the sashimi lunch here and came away disappointed and still hungry even with the somewhat reasonable price. The cuts were about half the usual size (understandable considering the entree was only $13) and the freshness could have been considerably better. Ponzu has really good sushi. My coworkers and I head here for lunch sometimes and it's one of the best places around for sushi. I always end up with spicy tuna, and one additional role. Last time it was avocado cucumber. They can't make sushi with brown rice, but that's OK, I can't be good all the time. If you're looking for a good sushi spot in the area, check out Ponzu. I've been waiting to eat at this place and finally did today for lunch. The service is attentive and friendly. The decor is a work in progress but the food is fantastic. They have a great selection of sushi, Japanese, Chinese and Malaysian items. A bonus is that they have tuna prepared in many ways. I highly recommend the spicy kim chi seafood soup to start. Anything else is fair game. read more
