We ordered online on Good Friday and were notified food would be ready in 15 minutes. I waited 15 min. before going to pick food up. After a five minute drive, I walked in and gave our name. There were no customers waiting, place was empty. Two orders were picked up and I had to stand around even after inquiring about my order. Finally after what seemed like much more then it should be to stand around, I walked into the bar area and asked about my order. It was sitting on a table all alongside the bar with another order. I couldn't believe no one gave it to me. I was told "it is hot, be careful". No apology for the long wait. It was very uncomfortable to have to stand around in this pandemic and no regard for expediency or even courtesy. We ordered Fried Seafood platter which my husband enjoys and it was fine. I ordered stuffed clams and two of the three were charred (black) I couldn't eat them. I sent an email to their site so that they could prevent this from happening to customers. In this pandemic we have to trust that what is ordered is what is picked up and edible. Certainly, I needed to check the contents of my order before taking it home to consume. I also sent an email to the "owner" two weeks ago and didn't get a response. It is not feasible to have to check contents of an order, then return them. We are trusting they prepare the food correctly and receive it in a timely manner. So please beware, I am sharing this so others are warned and hopefully it will improve. read more

Me and my drummer came in looking to book a gig ..Had some drinks and baked clams ,,I came to see my friends band performing there ...food was good ,,but I am a chef of over 40 yrs and there are somethings I would have done differently ..but the overall experience was great ,,friendly wait staff and bar staff ,,Sound was great good acoustics in the room !!! We sat right away and the hostess was really nice. We waited about 10 minutes for a waitress to notice our table because they were really busy. When one finally came over she was so apologetic and took care of us right away. She went out of her way to make our 5 year old happy by finding crayons and getting his order in right away. We always go to Popeis on a week night because my husband loves the all you can eat soft shell crabs. Our order was out quickly and they didn't fail. The shrimp was fresh and hot and the crabs were all great sizes! I had the special Pina colada and it was amazing! Service and food here is well worth it and we can't wait to go back!!! Let me start by saying that I've been coming to Popei's for 20yrs. That alone should speak volumes as to the longstanding quality of the place. This is a family run business & the owners Ralph & Trish can still be seen treating the customers & staff as a member of their large, extended family. Regulars can attest to seeing familiar & friendly faces as some of thr staff have been there for over 20yrs! This is unheard of in most restaurants. Their menu can be intimidating, its the size of a Russian novel, but you're bound to find something on their you will gorge yourself on. Add on nightly dinner specials, drink specials, desserts & you'll see why this Coram institution will be around for years to come. No good, from the beginning. 2 different clam appetizers were no good, one baked was raw and the other stuffed was just ugh.The waitres recommended Mozzarella sticks which came cold. Then my steak way over cooked. There popular seafood dish had paper in it some how. New york/new England soup they must have left the clam out and filled it with potatoes and carrots. Don't always judge a book by its cover. Im sure to many passer-bys who may stumble into Popei's, see the quirky decor, folded plates on reserved tables and tacky window decals, write it off as a dive, but I assure you - you won't find a nicer group of people offering great service, huge portions and solid seafood. It's nothing complex, you can just tell they make it with heart and have been serving locals for 25 years. My wife came here as a little girl and they remembered her like it was yesterday. I think a lot of times people think seafood and expect it to be served on a silver platter. Not Popei's and they want it that way. Try the Sesame Crusted Calamari... Very good seafood place with friendly staff. They have daily deals for unlimited crab legs or shrimp so it is definitely worth going on the special days. The bar can get a little crazy (usually in a good way) at night but the bartenders are helpful and keep a good atmosphere. read more

I love this place!!! But okay.. Let's be real, it's not a fancy place with chandeliers and elegant lighting if that's what you're looking for but the food is so delicious and the service is outstanding! It's more of a laid back atmosphere. The wait staff are very polite and accommodate any substitutions. I noticed a few people commented negatively about the friend seafood platter. I once tried that and didn't like it either but when I tell you everything else there is delicious it really is and I'm a very tough critic!!! On the week days they have all you can eat specials like crab legs, shrimp etc. During the summer months they have an outdoor bar and dining area with great bands and fun people. I can't even begin to explain how bad my experience was. The waitress was not very attentive. The girl cleaning our table knocked over a glass of water in our table and then blamed it on us. Had to ask 3 times for napkins. Then got food - cold and tasteless. I was the one that wanted to go there and felt horrible for suggesting it. Don't waste your money. I wouldn't mind prices if food was good. The only reason I would give it a two was because one and a half was not possible. And yet I sent email to 'discuss' like asked and never heard again. Orders Christmas Eve dinner to go. The total was $131 and the food sucked plain and simple. I have actually contacted them through their contact us page so I could send them pictures and they have not responded. I guess it shows how much they care. 1. Was told when we ordered the buffalo chicken appetizer was 8 pieces and we received 4. IT WAS $13!!! 2. The outside of the mozzarella sticks were black and the inside was just an un-melted grease filled stick of cheese. 3. Asked for regular fries instead of curly fries and got curly fries. 4. Was told we would be getting a "large amount" of garlic bread with all the food and we got this little 6" loaf of idk what. 5. The "lobster bake" which was almost $50 had a maybe 3/4 pound tiny ass lobster, a cluster of 4 small crab legs, a HUGE pile of clams and steamers that were basically just empty shells. There was another meal called everything but the kitchen sink and that person said it was ok. Also ordered linguine with red clam sauce the clams were tough like pencil erasers. It was a really crappy Xmas family dinner. I would like to have spoken with a manager but they obviously have better things to do. I forgot to mention that in all the trays of food were lined on the bottoms with shredded lettuce. I'm thinking this was maybe to soak up grease but I think it made the food soggy. Kinda strange. Had lunch here yesterday for the first time. Enjoyed it very much. The place seemed clean and employees were friendly. We were seated on the back deck. We enjoyed the fried soft shell crabs - this is one of my favorites and these were cooked perfectly - golden brown and crispy. Very fresh tasting as well. Beer was nice and cold - very welcome on such a hot day. Lots of attractive choices on the menu - will probably try the clams next time. Service was a bit inattentive but not terrible. Went with my boyfriend for some drinks and food on a Wednesday around 5:30pm. We sat at the outside bar where there was fun music for listening playing. The inside bar was filled and the outside filled up too, with I think mostly locals, as the bartenders seemed to know everyone's name. Everyone was attentive and friendly. We ordered the mussels in white wine, the thai calamari, buffalo chicken fingers and mozzarella garlic bread. Everything was delicous- although the bread could've been toasted, I think it was microwaved to melt the cheese. I would definitely go back as the seafood seemed fresh. My sisters & I went to Popies Clam Bar last in Coram. We had New England Clam Chowder , & Lobster Bisque to start, delicious, One had Fried Oysters, The Seafood Trio , Broiled, & The my other sister had The Mahi-mahi & some reason it had bones in it. We informed our Waitress, Mckinsey, took care of everything. She reported it to manager & she came out & took it off the check & also bought us dessert. She went above & beyond to make sure we were happy But McKinsey stole the show with her knowledge of the menus & her bubbly personality . It was actually a drink called the rocket fuel and it was pretty freaking good until I start stirring it and found a little black bug in it .I fished it out saw its legs etc then found another one and waited for my waitress . We were kindly seated outside by the host and were quickly given bread and told our server would be with us soon. 10 minutes go by. 15 minutes, okay it's busy. 20 minutes I go to the host and tell her nobody has seen us. She said she'd let someone know. Waited another 10 minutes and still nobody came to our table with all the other servers walking by and looking at our table multiple times. All in all we waited a 30 minutes and nobody ever came. I've lived near up the road from this place for years and rarely get a night off, so I finally decided to come here and was completely disappointed. This restaurant is the "go-to" for seafood in our area. The prices are about what you would expect for a seafood establishment. The service is always great and the food is good. I haven't tried everything on their menu, but I can vouch for the "all you can eat crab legs". Although it was $42.00 I didn't go in hungry enough and could only eat one batch. They were as big as my arm and delicious. My friend however, who weighs 95 lbs soaking wet, ate four helpings! So very good!! I would recommend for a nice dinner out. (Now if u know u are going to be serving ppl u have to have mineful mind on all areas of ur bar especially when its not a late nite or a crowd of ppl)....it's just SMH (I can write/post a small report/story about what she did and what was said by the other regular customers there long horrible story it wasn't just mi whom seen her to be aweful in this Thursday)......... *****Regular customers where saying the same thing***** then after 15-20 of still no asking if I was ready to order I paid for mi glass of wine $7. I gave her $100 dollar bill and she gave mi back $13...I was like excuse mi (in a nice way) that I gave u a $100 and her words where "oh yea u did" ( it mention she said it in a very nonchalant way ) and gave mi correct change after the regular customers offered to pay. My experience was brief, but I felt inspired to write. A few of my friends and I met up here for an after work beer, and we were served six dollar pumpkin ales. The second (and last ever round came) and the bartender placed this nasty, sloppy beer in front of us, sugar melting down the glass, and she laughed, looked at us and said 'now that is the worst pour ever'. My wife & daughters took me here for Fathers Day. It never really got crowded, and that made me think a little. I remember in the past how mobbed Popei's could get! I guess our last (and final ) experience there is why they weren't crowded like they used to be.The stuff that was good was pretty good. The stuff that wasn't was pretty lousy. The drinks took way too long to hit our table. My wife's drink was alcohol-free, and not by request, either. My younger daughters' Typhoon Shrimp was a dish to be avoided. It seemed to be overcooked fried shrimp drowning in some sort of semi-spicy axle grease. My older daughter ordered some very unimpressive fish taco's. She only ate them because she was hungry. The portions were tremendous, but the raw clams were microscopic. The waitress was really nice, when you could find her.... The end of the meal featured a fat broad puking piles of something yellow right outside the front door on the way to the parking lot.....but, all in all, we did enjoy ourselves. It should have been a much better experience for over $225.00....but I had great company! Thanks, guys! Well, this sucks....I really couldn't finish my calamari over linguini, so I took my leftovers to work for lunch. I just pulled a long hair out of my food. Had to toss it.. I can't eat food I found a hair in. Instead, I picked up a sandwich at the 7-11 on the corner. That's as disgusting as that puking hamster. I reduced my review from 2 stars to 1. Guess Popei's wins this by a hair....and loses a customer. Keep chasing away your customers....with mediocre food and lousy service. I can't decide what was worse The Baked clams were awful, all breadcrumbs with a few specks of chopped clams . Stuffed shrimp was overcooked and very much like rubber. My friend had the mussels marinara that were also over cooked ,salty and sandy.The waitress seemed impatient and in a rush. The place was packed and very loud ,mostly due to the bar which seems to be a local hang out. After we finished our meal the waitress came over left the bill and walked away. Didn't ask how the meal was, did we want coffee or dessert?. I actually went to look for her as I wanted to see a manager. I couldn't find her . This location was originally called "The White House" in the 1960's and I recall a small cozy family restaurant serving excellent food when my parents had Sunday dinner there. Many years later it became Popei's and was an absolutely excellent superb seafood establishment for many years. Growing in popularity the restaurant was enlarged going down hill from there in the food quality. Every few years we try it again only to be disappointed. This time it the worst meal we had there. My wife, younger daughter and I entered the restaurant to hear a bar room full of very noisy, loud patrons getting drunk at diner time which explained the full parking lot. However, the restaurant area was completely empty and wait staff was sitting around in booths since there were no restaurant customers. That should have been a warning to leave but we decided to give it a try. Clams Casino had (6) little neck clams that were burnt, tasted off, something was not right with the breading mixture. I started to eat them and tried a 2nd one but left the rest as they were horrible and beginning to get sick. I asked the waitress to away the plate and she never questioned why I hardly ate any. My daughter had Manhattan Clam Chowder and it looked like a mixture of other meats and after a few spoonfuls she asked me to try it and I agreed it was not good and had a peculiar taste. I had a bucket of steamers recalling from years ago how delicious they were with a hint of garlic and very fresh tasting. This time they were tasteless, rubbery and not fresh or perhaps left out for several hours. They definitely did not taste right so again I left most of them uneaten. My wife had Shrimp Scampi with hardly any flavor. The food was disappointing and this will be my last visit. I'm glad I didn't get an entree and neither did our daughter. We'll never come back to this establishment since over the past few years the food has become worse. The bar area was packed and very busy so is probably how they stay in business going since the restaurant area had little activity. A man with 2 young girls came in after we were eating only to leave before well before we finished so more than likely had only appetizers The extremely noisy bar area was overwhelming and would not be surprised if that was a reason for them leaving especially with children.
