Everybody has their go to place..the place that never disappoints and they always feel welcome at. For me , it's Popei's. My girlfriend and I visit a few times a month and we always have a great time. Went for dinner the other night and it seemed like a nice place with a cute atmosphere. Ordered a drink which was 90% alcohol and made my eyes cross, which they're proud of so if you're an alcoholic this place will serve you well. Then ordered Italian wedding soup which consisted of 1 meatball 3noodles, several carrots, and a pile of salt. Asked for then begged for water in which several stacked cups were tossed at us, one of which had dead insects in it... then a water pitcher with some sort of crud floating around in it... manager claimed she knew nothing about it and the restaurant was just sanitized. I mean, the bread is already a favorite part of any meal at any restaurant but getting it the Rueben way went from amazing food I like what have I been missing. First time having the clam bake and let me tell you, regular calamari is never a bad idea, but the Thai calamaris definitely a way to kick it up a notch. The outdoor dining is super cute and I'm hoping they decide to keep it even after all the craZiness or Covid. No crowds at lunch time. Place has lunch specials and is centrally located to highway. Soup is piping hot, and they have gluten free items. They made my salad lunch special with some toppings and dressing and the server took it back and remade it without any toppings without a problem. That is accommodating for those with special needs. We went last weekend and got in on extremely short notice. That's not typical during corona and I am amazed. I was never left without a drink or a bread basket. The service was impeccable. 5 + stars through and through. This place is organized like you wouldn't believe. The staff is friendly, informative, and warm. The food is better than ever. In the past we had some not so appetizing things, but not now. Popeis is really the place to be. They are quick, and their food is excellent. Everything we had was extremely fresh and perfectly prepared. It wasn't our first choice that evening but it will be from now on. We had heard great things about this place from a coworker, mainly their unlimited specials on weekdays, so we decided to check it out. Though the service was good and food brought out quickly, the food itself was a disappointment. Everything that had be prepared by a chef was lacking. While the raw oysters and bread were fine, our Cajun fried calamari was indistinguishable from the regular fried calamari in terms of flavor. Whether our orders were mixed up or the Cajun calamari is blatantly underseasoned is anyone's guess. Our entrees, the seafood trio which included shrimp scampi, broiled scallops and flounder, looked like they were all prepared the same way - tossed under a broiler without any seasoning. The most flavorful thing in the dish was the gravy that came with my mashed potato, and even then the flavor was primarily salt. My friend's pasta dish, "pasta well cooked, shrimp well cooked, but otherwise bland, the lobster dry and overcooked, and the sauce tasted like it came from a can." Overall, this is an below average restaurant with decent service, but for a place advertising great seafood for this price point, subpar. read more

The menu is extensive and between delicious stuffed mushrooms as appetizers, the daily specials, and all-you-can-eat menus, there are quite enough choices to satisfy everyone. Portions are generous and I didn't even finish my plate of tortellini because I had so much bread and calamari beforehand. Let me preface this by saying a year ago I would have given this place 5 stars. I do not know if the chef changed or the servers but my last 2 experiences were 1 star and that is generous. It took 1 hour to get cocktails and order let alone be served. Music from the bar was so obnoxious I could not hear the conversation at my table. And the food was not the quality it used to be. This was our favorite spot and unfortunately I do not think we will be going back. So sad. read more

Wooow I was blown away by this place! I've been passing Popei's all my life and have stopped at the bar once or twice, but I've never had the full dining experience until tonight, and it was pleasant! I came with my dad and sister around 6 pm on a Saturday night. There was a good amount of people here but there was no wait for our party of three. We were greeted immediately by our waitress, (I wish I remembered her name she was so sweet!), and complimentary garlic bread was brought out for us. We quickly ordered appetizers because we were all starving. The appetizers came out astonishingly quick. We had the shrimp cocktail and the fried clam strips. The shrimp cocktail had meaty and juicy pieces of shrimp, just how it should be! I'd probably pass on the clam strips next time because they were mostly tiny pieces that just seemed like fried batter. For my entree I ordered the chopped salad, which had crab meat, shrimp, and lobster on it, and lots of it! I was surprised and impressed by the amount of meat they had put on my salad. This place definitely does not skimp out and you're getting what you pay for. My dad ordered the shrimp Parmesan (drooooling) which had a huge amount of shrimp as well, over linguini. It was so yummy but I feel like it could have been taken out of the oven a minute earlier. Still good though! The NY Strip Steak was another awesome entree. It's huge and was cooked perfectly to my sister's liking. I can see why this place is always packed. The employees are friendly, prices are fair, and the food is bangin'. Nothing special here was very disappointed. Came highly recommended so I gave it a try. Made a reservation and still waited 40 minutes. They had a huge party going on where i couldn't even talk to the people I was with, people standing right over my back the entire time. How do you have a party for 30 people and then seat others in the same room? At the very least we should have been informed about the party before being seated. I would consider trying again, maybe just a bad night but the staff was rude and forgetful with food and drinks. Food was mushy with no taste at all! We haven't been here in years, since the kids were little, and my daughter loved the all you can eat crab legs, at age 3... She is in college now but her picture is still by the door! The guava margarita was absolutely delicious. My husband loved his half price margarita. He got the mahi mahi special and I got the shrimp a la vodka. The waitress recommended it with the fried shrimp and it was amazing. The mahi was incredible with fried rice that was better than any Chinese restaurant. This place just hit number one on my family's list. I am so impressed with the quality of the food and size of the portions that came to the table. We read one of the recent reviews here on Yelp and decided to make a request to be seated in MacKenzie's section. If you read any of my other reviews you'll see that a good review from me doesn't come easy or often. I don't have a single bad thing to say about this place. NOTHING. The service was PERFECT. When MacKenzie was away from the table the other staff floated around constantly to see if we needed anything. The food was perfect. The portions were huge. Everyone has lunch for tomorrow because of dinner tonight. I suggest looking at desserts and the drink menu under the desserts. The bill was appropriate for what we ordered as well. The bill suggests the tip based on quality of service and though it suggested a lot and I tend to be cheap... I tipped for the highest rating of service. Our server was great. Food absolutely sucked, fish had some flavor and the sides that came with it had no flavor at all and were completely bland and the risotto wasn't fully cooked. The manager came and asked us how everything was and when we told her and she was so shocked. So she said the best she can do was only 10% off the bill. Never will I recommend this place to anyone. What a great experience! I am not a seafood person but my family is so we decided to try this place. For the appetizer, we got the Thai calamari (pic below) and the clam chowder which were amazing. We got the linguine with clam sauce, which was a little bland but I have bland taste so it was okay for me. We also got the mussels and the Italian stallion. My brother got this one particular dish with fish, shrimp and spinach combined. That was amazing. Sorry I can't think of the name but I would definitely recommend that! The portions are very big so plan accordingly of how many dishes you plan to spend. Lastly, service was great. I've been here number of times and I think the overstuffed baked clams are great I like their salads and I like their portion size Alaskan King crab legs legs were full of meat not watery not too salty they were excellent i've been here number of times they were always excellent I ordered over stuffed baked clams and an order of Alaskan King crab legs, the garlic bread that was brought was cold when it came to the table could've been warmer, I ordered an Arnold Palmer, for those of you that don't know what that is it's half iced tea and half lemonade, it was delicious it was great. We finished our dinner satisfied, I looked at the bill and I noticed that my drink was eight dollars, I questioned eight dollars for lemonade or eight dollars for an iced tea that seems extremely high. I asked the waitress why it was so high and she said oh because they had to make it at the bar it was mixed drink iced tea and lemonade I said that still seems very high , another waitress came over and said oh because it has vodka in it, well considering I don't drink and now I've had a drink with vodka in it I was very upset I asked the waitress why they put vodka in it and was told they are ordered with vodka sometimes. We had my car so I was driving that night, I spent time in recovery. And I was very upset. so was my companion. I could have very easily had two drinks then gotten in my car and killed someone. Or gotten seriously hurt or hurt someone else. Had I been stopped at a alcohol check point and blew a "drunk" number I would have major problems with my driver license and legal issues I was comped my baked clams and offered free dessert and given a $10. Certificate good for my next visit I will be going back as I like the food and consider this a bump in the road. Wow.... read the reviews here and we decided to try the place since it was close to home. I was really looking forward to it... Wow... like... never... again... I've gotten better seafood at... well... just about anywhere. Long John Silvers is more appealing to me (and actually, a lot of them have a better atmosphere than Popei's) than the slop that got served up last night. Let's see... where to start where to start... "Clam Trio" appetizer. This was supposed to be three clams oregonata, three clams cassino, and three "clams popei" Well... I think they were nine of the smallest clams I've ever seen - this maybe because they were sitting under the salamander so long that they shrunk. Besides the fact that they were impossible to chew (had to swallow them whole), we were unable to determine the difference between the "clams oregonata" and the "clams popei". The only reason we could tell a "cassino" clam was there appeared to be bacon on them (I'm guessing bacon, because the whole thing was so overcooked you couldn't really be sure). Next up... My wife ordered a fried combo plate, and I ordered a broiled one. According to the menu, the only difference between the two was that the fried plate was supposed to have calamari, and the broiled one stuffed flounder instead of stuffed shrimp. They were both the same price ($21.00) Ok... My wife's "fried" plate was clearly double the size as my broiled one. Everything on her plate was cooked correctly, but completely lacking in taste. The only flavor you got was from the tarter sauce or cocktail sauce. My plate was... well.. a complete disgrace. I doubt there was more than $5 worth of fish on the thing. There was a WAFER thin piece of flounder. Under the flounder was about 5 pieces of fake crab meat (not chopped up or shredded - SOLID MASSES of blubbery steamed ick). Under the fake crab was a mount of steamed broccoli (huh??) and at the bottom - welded to the plate such that a crowbar and a blowtorch couldn't detach it - was a 1/4 inch of flavorless, sticky, breading. "Stuffed flounder"??? It got worse... There were 6 over cooked tough shrimp, a small cluster of rubbery bay scallops and what was supposed to be two stuffed mushrooms. Only issue was there was only one mushroom. There were two oval mounds of breading, but under one of them was... nothing... I payed $21 for a plate full of tasteless, overcooked, breadcrumbs. So... comes the bill... My wife had ONE cocktail. I had ONE cocktail and 2 beers.... $89 !!!!! OMFG! These people have the audacity to charge $8 for Blue Moon on tap! The bar bill was over $30!!!! NEVER... EVER... EVER... AGAIN.... I don't see how these people stay in business. If you want to go to the bar and drink - knock yourself out - there appeared to be quite a crowd there.... but please... for your own safety (and the safety of your wallet) DO NOT EAT THE FOOD !!!! read more

My boyfriend used to go to the Sayville location so we took a shot at Coram tonight. The bar had their music blaring which could be heard in the dining area so the dining area had to blast their music. The real problem was the food. We ordered coconut shrimp and the stuffed mushroom for apps, the captains platter and shrimp a la vodka for dinner. The coconut shrimp had no coconut flavor, the mushrooms had shell pieces in the stuffing and tasted strange. The lobster on the captains platter was slightly over cooked and the calamari had no flavor. The shrimp a la vodka was way over cooked so I had to send it back. The next dish came out way too fast and the very first piece of shrimp I cut into was raw. Then the shrimp a la vodka wasn't even taken off the ticket. Definitely never going back. read more

very disappointed with my take out today, They always gave the best garlic bread at each table so we ordered the garlic bread with cheese tonight. there was absolutely NO garlic on it, I paid 7 dollars for a loaf of bread with mozzarella on top. called to let them know that maybe they forgot to add garlic was told they don't make their own bread anymore that it is outsourced to another company. Its all about what you order. A couple friends and I came here the other night. I ordered the muscles in white wine sauce. It was very good but way too salty. If it wasnt so salty I would say the dish was amazing. Everyone I was with loved their food as well. I was impressed. My friends got the fried clams platter and eggplant parm...at least I thikn it was eggplant parm. I give this place an ok because the last time I was here I tried to order this and instead of getting the white wine sauce I got it in marinara, I hate tomatoes. When I said I didnt order the marinara sauce I ordered the white wine sauce she told me that I was wrong I ordered the marinara. I could not believe she did that. I thought she was very rude and I had a horrible time that time. It was about a year ago. This place has a "regulars" feel , you knw what i mean, when you walk in and feel like you have been coming there for years! The staff is so friendly and quick as hell, they will make you happy and get you drunk! I only went to the bar section, so i can't comment on all the food, but the quick bar food was good. They have two kinds of calamari super spicy and regular. Get both, there awesome! Other than those, they just have more bar food, but its pretty good all around. Stopped in to try this location as I am more familiar with their Sayville location. Ordered the "White Cloud" from the "I can't believe I ate the whole thing" menu. Fortunately, I didn't eat the whole thing. There was much to like in this dish as it came with shrimp, broccoli, scallops, and lobster meat. My wife had the veggie burger which she enjoyed very much. While the layout of this restaurant has a different feel from their Sayville location, the service and quality of food was just as good. I see myself returning. read more

First impressions are everything but what can you expect from a restaurant that can't properly spell "Popeye".... we place two orders for shrimp and an hour passes by and still no shrimp. We finally complain and get up to leave and they quickly come over and apologize and asked if they could buy us a drink. As they are offering a drink our two orders of shrimp come out. They asked if everything was ok and they brought out two more platters to make up for the wait. After a whole lot of delicious shrimp they apologized again and offered to buy us dessert and I have to say the carrot cake was very delicious. Not a gourmet place but good seafood and reasonable prices. The size of many of the dishes is incredible, especially the pasta/seafood/veggy combos. Enough for 2 to 3 people easy.
