Stopped here for the first time, wait time wasn't too long. I only ordered a side of fried clams to share and a kids meal chicken tenders. The clams were super dry and overly breaded & fried. No seasoning. Edible, but not the enjoyable treat they should've been. Tarter sauce lacked flavor as well tasted like mayonnaise straight from the jar.. which is not tarter sauce. Kids meal fries meh, chicken tenders tasted like they were cooked in old burnt fryer grease. First and last time I will go. read more

For the poor reviews, I think it must've been just a bad day or I caught them on a really great day. I did the seafood plate to sample a little of everything. Every single item was a 5/5 but the coleslaw. It gets a 2/5. The scallops were absolutely perfect. Fish was some of the best I've had. Clams and shrimp were wonderful. If you do get the seafood plate, it REALLY is more than enough for 2 people to split and was only $35 for that and a soda. I highly, highly recommend! read more

Two of us dined here Friday night. We ordered a cheesesteak and a cheesesteak with onion along with two large sodas. The food was served quickly and was really good. For $6.50 the sandwich was a really good value and the steak was cooked well. -1 star for not taking credit cards, but other then that you can NOT go wrong at Pops. read more

I asked the person for an order for two, obviously this must have been the day that I couldn't string together a proper sentence with my exceptional grammar thrown in because what I got fed myself my wife, and the three guys we didn't know in the boat next to us, and I ended up tossing a goodly amount due to the next couple of sentences. Lots of clams in the bag, lots of oil too. The clams had no flavor due to over frying. The same went for the onion rings. I give it two stars because I felt bad for the people sweating their asses off in that broiling kitchen. If you want fried clams on the lake, go to the Red Hill Dari in Center Harbor, at the opposite end of the lake, but a nice boat ride. You can dock your boat at the public docks and walk about 5 minutes to the eat at the outdoors only spot. read more

Sad to say it was disappointing. It was my first stop of vacation. Got the clam strips and small scallops, and a side of cole slaw. Cole slaw was flavorless and bland. Clam strips were ok. Being that I come up to Alton, as I've got a spot on Lake Winnipesaukee, whenever I come to New Hampshire, Pop's has got a special place in my heart (they have been here for SO, SO long!), and I make sure to stop by at least once throughout my trip every year. It has become such a great tradition. Anyway, this is a cool little joint sitting along Mount Major Highway (Route 11) with a cool outdoor seating area, and indoor "flipper room" as well. They carry a whole bunch of great food ranging from clams to burgers to hot dogs to shrimp to lobster to chicken and so much more. They have subs, plates, an entire kid's menu, and whole lot more. Gifford's Ice Cream is available and a wide variety of drinks as well. The onion rings are definitely the best, and my highest suggestion! Everything is fairly inexpensive and the service is normally fast (unless it's REALLY busy...) and always friendly. While it may not look so great from the outside, it's clean and has some of the best food in Alton! 5 stars for Pops, I've gone here for years, and have no anticipation of stopping. This is the best fried clams ever. When I first moved to the area I asked the locals where was the best place for fried clams, every one I tried was disappointing, until we happened on Pop's one day five years ago, haven't been anywhere else since. Scallops are great too. I usually get the combo, grilled scallops and fried whole clams with onion rings. You won't be disappointed. The only disappointment is that it is not open year round. read more

Best onion rings anywhere. Frappes to die for. Pop's has been around since I was a kid (which was a looong time ago.). The food is consistently good and abundant. Went here on recommendation of someone whose family has a home here. The food is very good. The small side order of whole belly clams was HUGE just like the other reviews say. The price was $16.95 though so you would expect a good helping. Don't let the container size fool you, they heap it do high they fall onto the tray. Food was not greasy and coating was light with fresh oil. Only disappointment is that the small side of haddock was indeed small, for $10.95. Worth a stop and great view of Alton Bay eating outdoors on the deck. read more

Very large portions but steep prices but then again they give you massive portions so i guess it justifies the price. I got the clam boat which is the smaller portion and it was great. I've been living in Alton for about 10 years now and I used to eat Pop's and I LOVED it! But now, the food isn't as great as it used to be. Onion rings used to be SO good and crispy and just absolutely delicious. And I don't usually like onion rings but Pop's is the only exception. Except, now I don't even want to go back there. Small fries are $4.95 and aren't all that great. Everything there is expensive and not good anymore. Overall, it's not the best tourist place to eat anymore. My sister also got a pork sandwich and the pork was pink and tasted bland and "stale like". It's horrible here now. I miss how it used to be. read more

THIS was the most pleasant surprise ever. Who would of thought this little shack produced huge plates of yummy food? It is in a great location, and two level seating is offered right next to the shack! This place gives an insane amount of food. I ordered the pulled pork platter for about $14.... for that price i got TWO.. yes TWO pulled pork sandwiches, a huge heaping of cole slaw, and fries that basically piled up over the sandwiches. It was insane! The food was all very fresh. Amazing cole slaw, addicting fries, and the pulled pork was better then I expected. I would have liked a little more sauce on the meat though! I can not believe we always passed this place! We will make sure to stop here more often. read more

Our experience here was not the greatest. The staff weren't overly friendly and the food was very disappointing. They wouldn't make the lobster roll without mayonnaise, the fries were soggy and greasy and the clams were all batter and sand. Great little place!! Got the fried shrimp boat and it was delicious. HUGE portions and the shrimp was fresh and crispy on the outside, nice and hot on the inside! Fries were the same way. My wife got the clam strip boat and couldn't finish it! Great little picnic tables to sit at that overlook the street so your not right in the street. Friendly staff that provides excellent customer service. We only live 15-20 minutes away and this will become a regular stop for us! We have eaten here several times this past summer even though we do not usually have fried food. Their food was not greasy or have a heavy taste and was one of the best I have ever had. The clam box in Ipswich maybe close, but wish Pop's was open after Labor Day! We had their scallop, full body clams, onions rings and their coleslaw is good as well! The place was highly recommended by a friend while boating on Merrymeeting Lake, so the group of us took a ride and tried it out. Let's just say our optition was no where near as high as was given. It was compared to The Clam Box in Essex, Massachusetts. Not even close. We ordered, chicken fingers, fried scallops, fish & chips, fried clams. The fried clams, fingers & fish received passing grades. On the other hand the scallops & french fries failed miserably. Fries were under cooked & the scallops tasted fishy. Perhaps if the bunch of us, from Massachusetts, were not spoiled by the 5 star Clam Box this place may have received a better rating. read more

Terrible Service! Never going back! I went to Pop's on the last day before they closed. The ad on-line read they were giving ice cream away at 3:45 pm. My mom went several minutes before that. When she got there, she realized it wasn't just scoops of ice cream, it was gallons of it. They gave one lady three gallons. My mom was there before her. When she asked for ice cream too, she was told they were all out. Talking about unfair! My friends and I went promptly at 3:45. The girl behind the counter said "I'm sorry we are all out.." I said, I'll order a cheeseburger. I sat down at the outside bench to eat it. They closed at 4:00 on the dot. I noticed that two girls who worked there, brought out with them two large gallons of ice cream for themselves. They had just said "Sorry we are out." They lied! I understand that it could have been a reward for their service for the summer. However, say that. Don't out right lie! My friend's husband had fries that were soggy too, because they were in a hurry to close up. Those two girls made everyone mad that they kept the ice cream for themselves. It was unfair and very rude! I checked, they aren't associated with the better business bureau. read more

i love pops clam shell in alton bay, NH. if you are a fan of great fried clams and casual eating this is the place to try. you get an abundance of golden fried clams on every plate too much really for 1 fries are OK and the cole slaw is fabulous too. Alton bay atmosphere is great you can eat at the lake watching the boats and people while you enjoy you meal from pops. take out only ( just a summer shack) however they do offer a indoor side building along with a roof top deck to eat at. we prefer the picnic tables across the street at the lake. prices are reasonable as well. read more

Pops has been my Favorite Seafood restaurant for 7 years (since we purchased our vacation home in the area). I have eaten in many seafood places from Maine to Florida and all the way to California. This little shack by far is the BEST!!! I grew up in Massachusetts and used to go all the way to Maine for my seafood but once married I have traveled everywhere and now will only eat POPS seafood. Nothing even comes close to the taste, portions and price. I can not believe that this little place has the largest portions at such a great price But what is more shocking is the taste and portion together!. My husband and I share the half and half (scallops & whole clams) and it fills us both up. We have a summer home in the lakes region and Pops is our summer opener and we always make sure we are also there for their last weekend in the fall. BUT get there soon as we have missed out a couple times on the clams and scallops as they ran out on their last opened weekend. We had the haddock on that weekend which was deliciousbut my favorite are the scallops and clams. Their cole slaw is amazing. Fresh and perfectly seasoned with NO after taste like most cole slaw usually has. Even their hotdogs are grilled on a toasted bun is outstanding. The fries are not greasy as none of their food is and are fresh cut and delicious. I even had my husband buy me their t-shirt because this little place is by far my favorite!!! You will definitely NOT be disappointed. read more
