I thought about 3 or 3.5 star - The food tastes fine and fajita was good overall but I was a little surprised there is no salsa offered on the table. We ordered a $14 guacamole, but received a tiny dipper bowl what looked like may be 3 oz cup of guacamole and 14 inches of space around occupied with chips). They didn't list this was chips order with a side of guacomole. They couldn't have made a mistake for a side since there wasn't such a thing on their menu. Veggie fajitas were good and kids cheese quesadillas were fine too. We ordered two items and some drinks and total was $98 or so. Handy location for conference attendees -- very efficient service, tables are well spaced for easy conversation. Nice margaritas ($10) -- tasty chips/salsa ($9) , quesadillas are your standard fare. We were in town for a convention and Porfiro's was a short walk from our hotel. The interior has wooden tables and interesting decor. Currently they are waiting for their alcohol license but they will serve drinks customers purchased next door at a small liquor store. We started with the chicken tortilla soup. It is tomato based with avocados slices, shredded chicken, and tortilla strips. The tortilla strips tasted a bit stale but the avocado enhanced the soup. We shared the chicken quesadilla. It was loaded with cheese and chicken. It came served with lettuce, and small amounts of Pico de gallo, and guacamole. The pico was fresh but the guacamole had a refrigerator taste. Lunch & brunch menus are also available. No happy hour. Atmosphere - Good size restaurant, 7000 sq ft. Seats 140. We were eating West Coast time, 3pm, so we were almost the only customers in the restaurant. Plenty of seating - Booth, table, high top table, bar, etc. Open 7 days a week from 11am to 10pm. Went on a Saturday afternoon after visiting the aquarium. It was about a 10 minute walk but worth it for some real food. Beautiful decor and spacious. Appears great for large groups. They're fairly new and it was quiet. But I urge you to try this place. I loved everything I ate and can't wait to go back and try more. Service: great. Everyone seemed to be in good spirits and our server Jennifer answered every question I had. Food: we had the calamari, quesabirria, street corn ribs, Chamorro de cerdo and sweet teas. All were delicious. Drinks: we were told they've just gotten their liquor license but did not have it yet. So they weren't serving alcohol yet. Decor: nice details. Hung paintings , a fountain and my favorite a clean bathroom. There's also a tv hung in the middle of the room. Overall a great experience. I will be going back to try other items. This is not your typical "Mexican" food, as the selection of available appetizers and entrees on the menu is impressive. For an appetizer, definitely try the Corn Ribs. The quality of my tacos was above average, but most importantly, made with quality ingredients. We came here after a visit to the World of Coca Cola and were a little surprised by how big it was and how empty it was. We are from California ( and from Redwood City which imo is the land of the best tacos ) and we were impressed at how amazing these tacos were. They were pricey with each taco was 5.50 each but definitely was loaded with the best flavors. The green sauce (mild) and the red sauce ( hot and mind blowing) were really good too! Definitely not worth the price for the quality of food. Some of the most bland food I have ever eaten. Served something that looked like bean soup and told it was a side of beans. It had more liquid than beans in the bowl. My tacos were soggy and drowned in wet lettuce and watery salsa verde. The chicken was tough and chewy without much flavor. We asked for a California burrito with no lettuce sour cream and no meat. What they brought out was then stuffed with veggies that were nothing like what we asked for. Queso had no flavor neither did the salsa that came with the chips. Corn ribs were still hard and you had to pick off the corn kernels. The great reviews for Porfirio's are spot on! As others have mentioned, they had just received their liquor license when we dined here but not yet were serving alcohol. The owners son chatted with our table and explained they were happy to allow us to purchase liquor from next door and provide us with ice/glasses/mixers if we chose to do so. This was a work dinner during a conference, and I was easily able to make a reservation for 9. Everyone's food looked amazing and my steak burrito was HUGE and extremely tasty. Came here as a reservation party of 13 with coworkers and I was impressed at their handling of our large party. Appetizers came out quickly and there was only a couple minutes in between the first person and the last person to receive their entree. Their menu is interesting, with an Italian Mexican fusion section of pastas. I was feeling Mexican, so I ordered the enchiladas with salsa verde. It was very good and my only wish is that there has been a little more of the salsa verde on top of the dish. At the time of this post this restaurant is BYOB with a liquor store close by, so we brought in a couple bottles of premixed margaritas and six packs. The Pollo was so juicy and flavorful that it left you wanting more. It was a good portion that could easily be shared. Be careful with the habanero sauce as it really packed a punch. The Cucumber Limonada was so refreshing and paired perfectly with the chicken and rice and beans. Of course, I didn't stop there and I ordered the concha ice cream sandwich, which left me so full the ice cream sandwich had berries in it, and the buns were toasted which made it so much better. I have never seen a dessert like this and I honestly wanted a second round. They don't serve alcohol at this location just yet however, the vibes were amazing. The food was great. The music was great. The servers were great. The owner was very transparent on waiting on his liquor license, but allowed you to go next-door to get some drinks. I don't think this would be somewhere I would dine again. But it wasn't horrible. Some food items were really good, some just average. Fajitas were $30 which is overpriced. Biggest issue... We were a party of 16 with practically no one else in the restaurant. The server did not mention to the guests that every little request was an extra charge prior to ordering nor did she ask if this was all on one check. When it came time to pay everyone was aware that there would be a gratuity for the large party but everyone was on one check. Then the extra pico was $1.50 which isn't bad but should have been disclosed. The guacamole was $10 extra.
