Truly enjoyed the unique, artistic feel of this restaurant. It is located in a strip mall so you may not expect the richness of character it offers. It is bright and colorful inside with worldly treasures to look at as you enjoy your delicious food. I could feel the quality in the details like the custom tables, nice utensils and real glassware. My brother and I were set to eat at another restaurant in Long Branch but neither of us remembered to check if it was open on Sundays. It was not. So there we were, stuck in Long Branch, hungry, and looking for good food. We checked Yelp and found that Port Chop was nearby. It sounded interesting and had some high reviews, so we decided to check it out. I am so glad we did. Delicious food and large portions. Specifically, my brother and I split the Piri Piri Grill and the Pork Tips Casserole. Both were delicious but special attention has to be paid to the Pork Tips Casserole. (It's the one with the note on the menu saying that it's what they're known for.) It was amazing! Maybe too salty but so flavorful that it's easily forgiven. Highly recommended. (The potatoes in the bottom of the crock were the best!) It amazes me how tasty this was. The Piri Piri Grill is not nearly as spicy as one would think given the name, but there is Piri Piri sauce on the table if you want extra heat. The chicken was especially flavorful...and I'm not generally a chicken fan. The Grill comes on a small metal grill brought to the table with charcoal inside. The Casserole came with fries, which were surprisingly tasty. They're not spiced or flavored or anything. Just real cut up potatoes, fried perfectly, crisp and golden. (They taste great dipped in the casserole's sauce). This is just the kind of place I love. No frills. No fancy decorations. It's in a strip mall. No pretention, just good food. I'm looking forward to going back and exploring their menu further. Please note: We ordered the Piri Piri Grill and the large order of Pork Tips Casserole. It was a HUGE amount of food. It's really unfortunate that this restaurant has gone so far downhill so fast. We just got our order and not only were we told that that the beef short rib platter was going up in price but we got less than what we normally would get for a full order AND the empanadas were half the size of what they usually make them. Stopped by for Dinner since I'm in town for work. Honestly I was trying to hit up Legendary Route 66 place but it was closed. This place was brightly lit and seemed interesting at first. I ordered Beef Empanada and it was sort of burned for appetizer. My main course was the beef combo and I asked for it medium but was no pink at all and kind of dry. The chicken in the beef combo was also dry. The rice was ok. It was served with Fries also and they were crunchy but Luke warm and a couple that I bit into squirted oil. Not the most pleasant dinner and I hope it's not the norm here. Didn't complain to staff because it didn't seem like it would matter. They Deliver! $2.00 only ( if it ain't a blizzard and the creek hasn't risen). The chicken (whole) was 3 big meals for me and the salad, fresh fresh and crisp, rice and fries (all cooked to order and worth the little bit extra wait) had the legs to stay good when reheated back at my hotel. Texas BBQ its not, but Portugese grill, served on a grill, ain't bad. Can I say, that the portions were generous and the portugese bread was fresh and delicious. On the way to the beach with my Portuguese mother and my little cousin we stopped by here to grab a bite.. well a bite turned into a whole chicken plus samples of pulled pork, ribs and a few other things. First and foremost, congrats to the owners for opening up the restaurant in a great location. Secondly, the staff and owner on sight were very attentive and offered samples of different dishes (thank you again). The prices are average for the area but def lower then the prices for most BBQ restaurants up in Northern NJ. The bbq chicken was cooked perfectly, not too burnt but not too soft, just crispy enough to eat the skin along with the meat. The way the chicken was served was interesting ..it was served on an old fashion cast iron tray with hot coals keeping it nice and hot the whole time, making the chicken crispy to my liking. The dishes all come with rice and french fries as well (large portions on top of it all). They also carry Portuguese beverages like Sumol de Laranja (orange) and Ananas (pineapple) which was a plus. To end the meal we each got an espresso and the owner would not let us leave until we tried the housemade cheesecake as well as a few other desserts. Needless to say, I had a carb coma on the way to the beach. The establishment is clean and modern by the way which is a plus given some of the restaurants I've visited in nearby towns. Ate here today, dropped in expecting a southern style bbq joint. I got a surprise! I had the shish kabobs and rice with fries. It just didn't wow me. I've eaten here before many years ago & the food was not the best especially for the price (expensive) for this type of fare. I decided to give it another try for lunch and I'm sorry I did. My main gripe is that when you eat in, there is a service charge that includes a tip. That would be okay if there were 4-6 folks on a check. I was alone & on top of that I was charged an extra 50 cents for using my debit card even though the bill was over $10. I ordered fries at first & then decided to order cod fish cakes too. After waiting 20 minutes the cakes came out. That is when someone brought out some bread & olives but only after I saw the folks sitting next to me with some. They were given their bread immediately after being seated. The poorest customer service ever & bland food. So for lunch I spent $17.53 for an order of cod fish cakes (4 small ones), small order of fries, & a black cherry soda. This included a service charge of $2.10 + .50 for using my card + tax not to mention the soda was $2.50. The fries were $4. & the cod fish cakes were $7.50. Never again will I eat at Port Chop. Every time I come here the snobby lady at the counter is always to busy making personal calls or no interest in helping the only customer in the restaurant. 15 houses away and still took over an hour to deliver. So I picked it up and the lady again was so rude I didnt even want my food at this point. she even had the nerve to call my fiances phone which I made the order and tell them I was rude!?!?!? I happened to stop by when coming back from the shore and ordered an empanada along with Portuguese fries. My sister ordered the pulled pork sandwich. I love salty food, and it was perfect. My sister on the other hand, said it was too salty. The reason I gave it 4 stars was because I didn't order anything fancy out of the elaborate menu. . (Many options) However, the owner stepped in during our service and made me some espresso iced coffee and I'm currently sipping on it. It is absolutely AMAZING. We are a company here in Eatontown that decided to order from here. I'm Portuguese and i have to say this food was poorly executed. The Carne Alentejana looked like Carne Alentejana Soup. Food arrived 35 minutes late. They forgot the Presidents food and he had to share a sandwich with someone else. As a portuguese person I'm embarrased to say this is portuguese food. I'm serious, really embarrased. Needless to say no one here in the office will be buying again, very sad as i was excited to have a portuguese BBQ so close to work. Stopped in for the first time about two weeks ago for a take-out order of one 1/4 pork ribs combo and one 1/4 beef ribs combo. I paid 9.00 each for a pile of flavorless dry rice, french fries, and 2 1/2 ounces of beef ribs (yes I weighed it). The pork ribs were also a tiny portion made even smaller by the fact that I was served the cartilage tip bones (tsk tsk tsk). You blew your chance to impress me....will not be back. I just started working in the area and decided to go out for lunch! Someone at work suggested Port chop BBQ. We went there with some co-workers, I had the lunch special, it came with free soup! The owner introduce himself, after I asked my waitress if the food I order was gluten free? He was very knowledgeable and made sure everything I order was gluten free! What a relief to see management that cares and is familiar with allergies and other food intolerances customers might have! Five star for the food and more for the service! Terrible experience. I ordered 2 hamburgers and waited 35 minutes. I complained a few times and was told it was coming up but never did. When I got home all I had was two burgers that had no juice, dried out, most likely because the gas attentent slash cook most likely pushed the meat down on the grill to cook on a cold grill in an effort to finally get it done. Been here a couple of times and liked this place a lot. Daughter loves the casserole pot whenever we get the paella. Ordered the bacalau bras, which cod with eggs and potatoes, which was pretty good. This was my very first time in this area and the smell of the BBQ coming in my car window is what made my husband and I decide to try out this restaurant for lunch! From the minute we walked in we were greeted by a friendly staff! The food met all my expectations and more! I was most impressed with my server Mariebelle! Not only was she so kind but there was a mistake on our bill for an over charge of something that was included in our meal. My husband and I would have never noticed! Mariebelle caught the mistake after we paid and alerted us and returned our money. That type of honesty is very rare these days and it was a breath of fresh air to be reminded it exists! My co-workers decided to give Port Chop a try for lunch during a bring your lunch meeting. I ordered the Portuguese Cheese Steak Sandwich which comes with french fries. Now I didn't expect it to be even close to a Philly Cheese Steak but OMG. I received a thin piece of steak on a roll. There was no cheese or anything else on the sandwich?? My other co-worker ordered the BBQ Chicken Sandwich which also comes with fries. What she got was chopped chicken on a roll. There was no BBQ Sauce or anything else on it. So...I called the restaurant and spoke with the manager. Explained to him what we had received and he proceeded to say "What do you want me to do about it?" I said "Sir, we did not get what we ordered. Isn't a Cheese Steak Sandwich supposed to have cheese on it at least? Shouldn't BBQ Chicken have BBQ sauce?" His reply to me was "Well yes it should have cheese on it but if you wanted something extra you should have been specific and we would have given it to you on the side!! He also replied that the BBQ Chicken doesn't come with BBQ Sauce...it's BBQ flavored!!." Seriously?? And you're the Manager of this restaurant. So he wanted to know what we wanted him to do about it. I said well we would like to be reimbursed and receive a free meal. We did not get what we asked for!! If this is supposed to be A Great Portuguese BBQ with a Great Attitude I think I will take my business elsewhere. This man had no remorse and certainly did not say he was sorry and he would make it up to us. PORT CHOP......you have just lost a lot of business from our organization.
