My hubby and I came here for a quick lunch. I ordered a patty melt which came with a pickle spear and chips. It was okay. The bread was a little too burnt for my liking but the patty, cheese, and grilled onions were not bad. My hubby got a pizza burger with chips and a pickle spear. It was a patty with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. He said he liked it! We were the only customers at the time (Saturday at 12:30) so our food came out really quick, the server was really nice, and we got in and out quickly. I knew the chef was the owner because the menu cover had a pic of the owner which I have never seen before so I found it interesting. I was here with my daughter (16) on March 3, 2012. We wisely decided to go "into town" from Cascade Mountain Ski Area, for lunch. At Portage Cafe, we spent $17 for two awesome Stuffed Grilled Cheeses (you decide - fries or chips, coleslaw or cottage cheese), coffee, AND the tip. Skinny storefront location, but nice booths and a big counter. Free newspapers spread out on the counter when you walk in. Instant "Hi! Have a seat and I'll be right with you!" when you walk in the door. Best breakfast we had during our visit to Portage/the Dells. Everything was well cooked: my husband and I both had veggie omelettes and my daughter had french toast. We also split a large order of biscuits and sausage gravy, which was definitely the highlight for me. That gravy was spot-on and definitely made from the sausage grease - that warmed my little pregnant Oklahoma-raised heart. Our server was friendly as could be, as was the cook who works up in front of the bar. My only complaint would be the coffee, it was weak and had a sort of strange flavor to me. Great prices. It felt like a real hometown kind of place, and as we are so far from our own small hometown I think it was clear we weren't locals but were made to feel very welcome. Was very disappointed waited 35/40 minutes for service it was not crowded 2 waitresses on . When it came to drinks one of our party ordered a soda was not offered ice but other patrient were, given one cup of coffee waited for cream &surger by the time she brought it my coffee was cold we had got there for breakfast but waited so long were told no breakfast after 11 am settled for burger. If I had known I would have gone to McDonald's the burger would have been about the same instead of costing me 7.50 and a hot cup of coffee. read more

The waitress was really busy but she did a good job keeping up with all the tables. The prices were pretty decent and the food was good. Ordered the banana pancakes with bacon and hash-browns. The hash-browns could have been a little crispier but the bacon and pancakes were perfect. Their coffee was just average. Overall no complaints. May go back again. read more

Lovely little diner - we stopped for a late breakfast on our way out of town. Friendly staff, my mushroom omelet was very tasty, my daughters French toast was great. I love hash browns and my only criticism is the portion was a bit small and they were a little too oily. read more

Between seeing the chef scratch his head before putting the cheese on my burger and the guy who came in, bought a coke so he could use the bathroom but before leaving announced to the room "Im gonna wait till next week to get my chemo, then come and puke in all the bathrooms on this block (except here)" I'd say this is pretty good for a Portage lunch experience. read more

We waited for maybe 5 min because the restaurant was full but the owner came out and insisted on paying our bill because of the "wait". We tried to pay but they were persistent in paying. Yes, it's "just" a diner, but the food is prepared with real care and attention, right in front of you--the flat top grill is right behind the counter. The grill cook slices the tomato to order for your burger, the waitress knows just what the regulars want, and the photo on the wall is of the very same diner in 1955. Very friendly service. Coloring books and a game were brought over for the kiddos. Love the swivel counter seats and the on display grill action. FYI They only serve breakfast on Sunday. This is my favorite breakfast spot! The service is great (warm and prompt) and the food is probably the best breakfast I've had out. I'm an eggs and bacon lover - simple sounding, I know. But they are always excellent and cooked per my request (I like the bacon crispy :). And it's never swimming in grease. Sounds simple but it amazes me how hard this is to actually accomplish. First time there my wife did not eat her hash browns (yep... If you like them they are also perfectly done) she just doesn't like them and didn't read that they came with her order. The cook asked us if there was something wrong with them or if he could make her something else. He honestly wanted to know because he cared. If this is what your looking for give this place a try. Very small place with a old-school feel. Not many diner's have the cooking area directly behind the counter so you can watch the Cook do his thing. Server was fast, often re-filling the coffee before it was even needing a refill. Food was made fast even during a early morning rush. These folks are really good at making eggs, if the cook is the guy pictured on the front of the menu you're in for a treat. The other guy is really good too. The chicken fried steak and eggs was amazing, the sunny side up eggs were cooked perfectly, and the chicken fried steak was crispy and delicious with good gravy.
