Whenever venturing around our vast country, I like to frequent businesses that are not found where I live; naturally, I saw Portillo's (a native business from Chicago) and knew I had to try 'em out! First off, the outside as well as inside of the establishment is beautiful! When you walk in, the restaurant is beautifully decorated; it's a cross between a fast-food establishment and a restaurant dining-style. I believe another Yelper also mentioned that fact as well. One can order in two options: using the self-kiosk, or going to the counter where there is someone there to take your order. Having both options available is rather convenient. For my food, I got the Famous Meal #1: Italian Beef Sandwich. However, I came prepared: it was going to be personalized to be the perfect meal. FIRST: make it big ($2), then add sweet and hot peppers ($1.98), mozz cheese ($.89), and ordered slightly wet. For my sides, I opted for the large onion rings ($4.99), and in addition --- this is A LOT -- I got the famous Chocolate Cake Shake (additional $6.19). If you were going to get a normal meal, it would probably cost you about $14.57. Mine -- with all the add-ons? $26.88. Take that into consideration. How was the food? Portillo's is definitely the experience many Chicagoans have heaped about. The "dipped" Italian Beef Sandwich was generously portioned, and if I had anything to comment-on --- it would be adding more sweet + hot peppers to the sandwich. Besides that, everything else was spot-on. On to that famous milk-shake: if you're a first-timer DO IT. How does it taste? It honestly tastes like a "real" version of a frosty from Wendy's --- taste wise. At least we know what's in this milkshake: Ice Cream, Milk, and a slice of chocolate cake. First visit and it did not disappoint! The establishment gives vibes of both fast food and restaurant style dining. We approached the counter and placed our order then waited for our number to be called. The establishment is fairly large with brightly colored decor and table/booth seating options. It was clean and the customer service was exceptional. There was a lady calling out orders over the intercom. She used quirky call outs for each order number which was a nice added touch to the experience! I ordered the Italian beef with melted cheese and it was delicious! The bread was nicely toasted, meat was juicy and flavorful and the cheese brought it all together! Highly recommend! read more

Brand new restaurant, clean and large vibes. Wish it had a little more of the traditional Chicago vibes like the OG one downtown Chicago. Food and dogs were the same. Fast service. Order from the kiosks. Place felt a little dead for a Friday night but I think these Texans need to taste a good Chicago dog and beef sandwich. Get the onion rings! read more

First heard of Portillo's at the car show at Reliant stadium a few months back as they had a vendor booth in the arena and they handed out info about the place. Just been so busy but finally got time to go and try. I will say that I wasn't impressed overall. But I also knew I was going for a hotdog and my friends were gonna order a broiled chicken sandwich. First from outside the bldg looks nice and modern and has a diner vibe. Inside looks diner/retro sorta and plenty of seats inside and outside. Overall appearance looks good. Staff friendly and welcoming and helpful with our questions since first time visitors. My main issue is they are pretty much à la carte. But do have a few combos on a center menu bar. but it didn't list all items or show all items available in combo form. I asked cashier if I had to order each item separate and she said yes. So my hotdog was $3.89, reg fries $2.99 and drink $2.49 so a total of $9.37 before taxes and the broiled chicken sandwich $7.19 so a total of $12.67 ea. Total for all 3 was $37.57 The hotdog had no size choices meaning regular or 100% beef frank or larger size. So the hotdog I got was a regular sized hotdog and the bun and toppings were bigger in size and portion then hotdog. The broiled chicken looks like a half of piece of a chicken patty, very small for the price. Way smaller than other fast food places like a chic-fil-a, Whataburger or Popeyes. The fries were actually really good but I wanted onion rings so when I asked the cashier if they were real onions cut up and battered or even pre frozen but real onion rings and not fake onions rings like BK she said no they are not real onion rings so I passed on ordering them. Once we went to the drink station they were out of sweet tea, and didn't have lids to fit the cups they gave us. I got a soda and then when I picked up our food I saw a drink station for drive thru and asked cashier if she could give me a sweet tea and she did but it didn't taste good at all so I decided to drink the root beer I originally poured. Trash bins were full, my table was clean but the seat I had to wipe down crumbs before sitting down. They had a lot of workers behind the counter not sure why there wasn't one or two in dining room cleaning and taking trash out and restocking drink station. Over all the hotdog did taste ok, but as a comparison the Chicago dog I use to get at James Coney Island with the option to upgrade to a beef frank is way better overall. They really should add an option to upgrade to a bigger dog. The chicken sandwich overall tasted good but very small and over priced. Due to portion size and higher prices compared to what you can get at other fast food places with larger portions I probably won't return. read more

The chocolate cake is GRRRRREAT! Definitely a must have :) ordering is easy and self service. Prices are high for what I consider fast food. The establishment is very clean and staff does not talk to you. So nothing really drives you back. The food is just okay. I have tried a hotdog and the beef sandwich. I do not care for the large croissant bread they use. It was much too soggy. However the salad I had was great and their dressing was awesome. read more

Okay so it's not Chicago but it's definitely a different type of eatery in Tomball. Tomball has been needing something different for a while. Signed up for Portillo's app and reward club to get free fries had to order $5 or more so I ordered their Chili Cheese Dog, Fries (free) and cheese sauce with a large drink. My mother in law got their Italian Beef minus the peppers. Both were very good meals The eatery is a walk up and order type place, if they are busy they have touch screens to order your food. They also have a way to order through their drive thru, Uber Eats or Door Dash. They serve Coca~Cola products, tea and I think some beers. I saw Blue Moon on tap. The restaurant is decked out with diner style chairs and has some booths very 50ish decor on walls. There is a place to eat outside. Don't forget to get a chocolate cake shake!!! read more

Since I've now had my first taste of Portillo's in Chicago, figured I'd give Texas a try. This time I ordered a regular size Italian beef and added the maxwell street polish sausage. The sammich gave me the same feel as Chicago though slightly better cause I didn't get it dipped. I got the gravy on the side which works better for my taste buds not liking wet bread. The dog with the onions was delicious. The restaurant is bright and new, but wasn't as lively as my Chicago experience. I heard the burger is fiyah so that's my next choice when I venture back! read more

Aug. 22 @7-8pm. Terrible service. The employees and the manager/supervisor on staff were lazy. Prior times I have ordered catering style frozen packets and meatballs with no problem. The employee and manager/supervisor told me this time that this location does not take those types of orders. When explaining to him that we have ordered this same order before with no problem. They were quick to respond "well that's impossible, cause they never take those order and don't have frozen packets and meatballs to go". Visited Sunday inside to eat, around 11:30am. Food- cold. Service- poor. Ambiance- awful. condiments depleting, garbage full, rare to find inside seating, dirty tables & seats. Waited 20 min from the time of order at the counter, where the GM couldn't hear anything we were saying and asked over and over again until little did we know until pick up, getting part of it wrong. Once we got the order, and I asking for the "#1 with sweet &hot peppers" with also the cheeseburger meal, we didn't get the fries for the #1 I ordered because he didn't hear that part but we did get a cold order post 20min wait. Being from Chicago, I can say please put this place on pause, go to any of the locations in Illinois - train the entire staff and spend a lot of time focusing on operations, then reopen here when ready. New Tomball restaurant! Been hearing a lot of hype so we figured we'd try it out. We looked online first and saw a bunch of various menu options like pasta and ribs but beware, since this is a new establishment their menu is limited so no pasta or ribs. We tried the burger, chili cheese dog and fries. Service was very friendly and patient as we asked questions and ordered. Food was okay but not anything that really stood out for us. Has an old fashioned diner feel and decor with upgrades and lots of seats. Ordering can be done with self serve monitors or at the register with a live person. Lots of seating so I can see big parties come through if they're looking for something quick to eat. They even have outdoor seating which will be great once it gets cooler. read more

First time trying Portillo's and wow -- I was impressed. I ordered a Chicago-style hot dog (no onions, peppers, or pickles), a chili cheese dog, a medium fry, a chocolate cake shake, and a slice of their chocolate cake. The hot dogs had great flavor, and I liked the amount of toppings. The quality was solid, with a nice snap to the bite. The fries were mediocre nothing special But the real stars of the meal were the cake shake and the slice of chocolate cake. The hot dogs would make my rating a 4 but the cake slice + cake shake bumps my review up to a solid 5! I wasn't expecting the shake to be that good -- it was loaded with pieces of cake in every sip. The chocolate cake itself was moist, airy, and rich without being overly sweet. It had the perfect balance between cake and frosting. I'll definitely be back and making this a regular treat. read more

As a Chicago native I've been very excited to finally have Portillo's in Houston! The decor was spot on for the classic look of a Portillo's. The food tasted exactly how I remember. I got the beef bowl to add to my own gluten free bun. The French fries are crispy and the chocolate shake is deliciously creamy. The restaurant was relatively empty on a Saturday night so I hope business picks up. The service was not as efficient as the busy locations in Chicago and the cashier didn't seem to understand the menu that well yet. Our order was missing a cheeseburger but the manager promptly took care of fixing the mistake. I also recommend the burgers and you absolutely have to try the chocolate cake! read more

We came out for a yelper event, but I ended up making some purchases as well. So we'll cover that which I specifically purchased in this review. Unbeknownst to us there was an AC issue at the restaurant, not an issue. They posted a sign outside letting people know what was what. Luckily it was a nice enough day that it was only a slightly humid inside and very tolerable otherwise. It's Texas, we know things happen especially with the amount of AC that we use daily. Walking in the staff were super helpful. The place is very clean, parking is easy because it's a massive new lot that's still currently developing with other buildings and the such. If you live in the north side Tomball Cypress area. Very easy to get to between 249 and Grand parkway. I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich, with a side of fries. The flavors were very good. I really enjoyed the spice, I enjoyed the little bit of crunch. There was to it. Where I had issues was that the bun turned very soggy very quickly and could not handle anything else that was in the sandwich. And ended up sliding off and became very messy. Also the chicken itself. It was a very thin slice. I'm talking sausage Patty at McDonald's. Kind of thin. It could be far better and more worthwhile if they invested a little bit more on their chicken. My dining companions also had the sloppy issue with one of their burgers. It also just turned into mush very quickly. Again, love the flavor, needs work on the quality and quantity. I also purchased two hot dogs because you can't come to this place for the first time and not try their signature dogs. They were tasty, but I will again stress that for what I'm paying, that was a very tiny dog in a very big bun. Why not go to the 3/4 dog that you can get across the street at HEB? I like a good dog, but the condiments and bun far overpowered the teeny weenie. I get more dog from the Astros stadium. Again, bit and flavor, but I would prefer more substance. My benchmark in the H is Yo-yo's. If I came back I might go for the chicken sandwich again, or the burger. But I don't think I would come back for the dog specifically. Drive by and caught my attention to be a fun diner to visit. Looked busy so needed to try it out. Wasn't disappointed and so much to see as you come in; 50's rock and roll memorabilia and music. Either use the 4 self service kiosks to order your meal or go the old fashion way and order w live person. Always like the friendly interaction with real person. Since it was my first visit, I ended going with their specialty menu and choose #2 with 2 dogs (Chicago style) w pickles, tomatoes and the works. Came w fries and drink. Delicious and filing. Decided to take the other one home. Fries and 1 dog was enough to fill my craving. Definitely will come back to try the other many choices on the menu. Spacious dining area w mixed tables and booths. Went with my sister tonight and had our first dining experience at a Portillo's. The parking lot was huge, and there was plenty of outdoor dining space. When we walked in we were welcome by old rock and roll music from the 50's and polished vintage feel of a diner. There were 4 self order stations if you don't feel like ordering from the main counter. We ordered at the main counter and had a lovely employee help us out with the menu. I ordered small fries, a soda, and the Italian Beef Sandwich with sweet peppers, in "the classic/standard style" (which means they slightly drip the sandwich in gravy), they also offer a dry and a dipped option. I asked the employee at the counter if the dipped option makes the sandwich more soggy, and she sort of nodded and said "I never get it dipped, I think it is too wet". My sister and I also ordered a side of onion rings to share and she ordered herself a side of cheese sauce, and a chocolate cake milkshake. We were given our receipts and cups (my sister had water) and were told our order would be announced when the meal was ready to be picked up at their pick up counter that was situated next to cubbies for their delivery orders. There was a soda machine station that offered Coke products, napkins, cutlery, straws, cup covers and a ketchup dispenser with good sized cups for the ketchup. It seemed like it was either a slow night, or the restaurant was just too big, because there was plenty of seating even with about 20 people sitting at their tables or booths. There was enough room for a kids baseball team with parents in there, if needed, that's not even counting the outside patio that wrapped around the front and one side of the building. When my order was announced I went to the pick up counter with my ticket to confirm it was my order. The food was fresh and hot. I played it all out in front of me to get a good look at the size of everything (and a photo op). The small crinkle fries were a really great size, almost like a large. The taste of the fries was passable, there was no seasoning but for a little bit of salt. I had to dip the fries into the ketchup to give them some taste, so the fries weren't my favorite. The large onion rings were nice and crispy. The sandwich itself had a generous amount of Italian Beef, and the sweet peppers were nice and large to have a piece in every bite. Having a "classic" bread, where they lightly dip it i to the juice helped give it some nice flavor. The beef and the peppers were tasty, but more than halway through my sandwich i could start to sense the bread was getting a bit more wet, so I took a picture of some of the juices that was coming off of it. I ate the entire sandwich and was left feeling full. My sister let me have a taste of her chocolate cake shake, and boy was it exactly as advertised. A bit too thick for my liking, but she loved it. Before leaving I went to the restroom and found it to be nice and clean, as was the rest of the restaurant. Overall I'd say next time I'll try one of their hotdogs to see if it's worth going back a third time. read more

I've driven by Portillo's several times and finally decided to stop in. I ordered a sausage brat with everything, which came out to about $7. Unfortunately, the brat was lukewarm and not really worth the price. The restaurant itself looks awesome inside, but I did notice quite a few dirty tables, which took away from the experience. Since it's still a new location, I'm guessing they may be working through some early issues. I'm willing to give it a second chance and try something else next time--maybe a burger--and see if the experience improves. read more

Portillo's welcome to Tomball! Love this place. I've tried a couple different things on the menu and love them all however I keep going back to the spicy chicken chopped salad it's so delicious! I always add extra house dressing and it's just so tasteful. Another thing I do is add extra chicken to it as well. But, the flavor of the chicken with the peppers and the cheese and dressing just makes it so tasty! The service has always been spot on and anything wrong they will fix it immediately. Love going to the new location in Tomball it's a really cool atmosphere inside. Will keep going back for that salad! read more

Honestly it didn't taste like a hot dog with so many non-hot dog toppings. And the meat itself wasn't anything special. The bun kept falling apart too when I picked it up. Ordered a cheeseburger with fries. Additionally I ordered a kids hot dog meal along with a double chili cheese dog meal. The service was ok, if you consider a machine to be service. It was decent enough inside, but nothing special IMO. My son eats hot dogs all the time, not once has he ever choked. Well, today he did. Your hotdogs aren't very good. I disliked them as well. When you make a hot dog there shouldn't be a casing, they had a weird chew. Also, chili dogs shouldn't have beans in the chili. I truly like a good hot dog, my favorite is the Chicago style hot dog. Portillo's did a fine job with the Chicago , it had everything it should have. The bun was fresh, the hot dog had the snap to the outer casing as it should and the taste was good. The only issue I experienced was when I walked in the door you are standing in front of the automated order kiosk. I know a lot of the fast food places such as Wendy's etc use them, but I found trying to order confusing. It was not clear on what type of hot dog I was choosing it kept asking do I want everything on it?? But not showing me what everything consisted of. I found I was taking too long trying to maneuver the automated system and feeling frustrated I walked to the counter to ask if I could order there. Thankfully I could! If not I would not have eaten there... ever! The second issue was finding condiments such as salt, pepper, katchup . Once I located the katchup despencer there was nothing to put it in, the two dispensers for the little katchup cup were both empty. I asked a employee about it and they told me they would see about finding someone to refill them. I just grabbed a small cup and added katchup in it so I didn't have to wait until they could find whomever fills the dispenser Bottom line- hot dog = good / fries= too soft tasted freezer burn. They should have left them in the fryer longer. Service = not good for my first visit. I may try them again , possibly a different location. There are definitely better hot dog places around but you try them and let me know if you have a better experience or I just came on a not great day for my first time there. I ordered a Italian Sausage Sandwich and was told they didn't have any peppers sweet or hot. How do you have an Italian Sandwich without peppers??? I picked up my order and it consisted of a sausage and a bun, what a disappointment. Luckily I got cheese sauce to dip the fries in so I was able to put some sauce on the sandwich and was able to choke it down. I did not get to try the food at this location because they did not honor my Yelp event voucher. The employee told me the voucher had been canceled by corporate and there was nothing that they could do. The staff could have been more polite about the situation instead of being agitated and angry. That caused me to not even bother to try the food and pay for it myself. The place looked very empty and the rude staff did not help. On a positive note the place is clean and new. read more
