I don't know about this place. It's hit and miss. My wife grew up in Chicago and was really excited when this place opened up but we've been here 5 times and each time it's either been awesome and food is great, or it's s**t and the food is cold and service has been slow. We've been here twice on weekends for lunch after seeing a movie at the AMC or after work before going to Costco (you know, so you're not hungry going there and filling your car with unwanted food :P). It doesn't seem to matter. One weekend it great, the other not so much. During the week, it's been on more time than not but I can't really recommend this place right now. Go there if you're starving and there's no room at other places and hope you get a good day but it's not a for sure thing. read more

So the service is ok. The food...not the best. We had a Chicago dog, a burger, and the Italian beef. I ordered peppers and mozzarella, which costs about 1.60. What a waste! Two peppers and a small pitiful amount of cheese. The meat was dry while the bun was soaked. French fries with cheese sauce sounded good, but it was just crinkle fries with movie type cheese sauce. I don't mind the long line, it is a new restaurant and they did move the line relatively fast. I did order multiple thing to try it out, the ribs are not good and would recommend to never be ordered. The burger (double bacon burger with cheese, I tried to order american cheese but cashier didn't know how to put the order on, again new restaurant) has potential and I will order again to see if I would like it on second pass (it was only ok on first try), out of all thing I ordered I think the big meat sandwich was the best along with the chocolate cake milk shake (yes there is a cake in it that you can eat with a spoon at the end). lives up to chicago memories with italian beef. we had music from the 60s & 70s when in chicagoland so not impressd w the dixie band noise. im not sure the layout of the restaurant is as efficient as it could be either. even with a modest business the wait times were pretty long . worth the beef tho. hamburger was good, polish was very greasy & salty. oh & they dont warn you that peppers on your beef cost xtra sixty cents either. read more

When we arrived we were greeted by 2 employees, they gave us 2 menus then showed us where to place our order and where we would pick it up. We didn't have to wait long for our food, everything was hot, fresh and made correctly. we were super excited to eat because it was our 1st time. We proceeded to devour our feast and as we were eating Scott the manager came over and actually gave us 2 desserts since it was our 1st time, he just wanted to make it extra special which was so awesome! he was so nice and so friendly,it totally a made our experience that much more amazing. Our food was so delicious and yummy, my friend is literally in love with the Italian beef sandwich now and the chocolate cake shake was to die for. Towards the end of our meal Chris, one of the employees who had helped us when we 1st arrive, came over and started chit chatting with us and asked if we like the food, she was kind enough to offer to take our tray. Overall I would say my whole experience, and I know my friend would also agree with me, was absolutely wonderful, we will definitely be back! Oooh I was so happy when I found out Portillo's was coming to MN! I have been to the locations in Chicago and loves the Italian beef sandwiches. When they first opened; the lines were crazy so we waited a month or so. My husband typically doesn't like to try new things or places but this is one place he LOVES! We haven't eaten inside yet so I can't comment on that but I can say they have a great turn-around time in the drive-thru. When the lines starts, they have people walking amongst the cats taking orders and payment; very efficient. The other great thing is that they are part of Door Dash so we can get it delivered to our home. We live the Italian beef sandwiches with extra gravy and I was a little worried the first time we had it delivered that the sandwiches would be soggy but they weren't; they were just as tasty as if we got them ourselves. Terrible...which is so sad. Grew up going to Portillos near Chicago and was looking forward to a taste of home. The restaurant is filthy, which I've never seen even when a location was slammed. Employees seemed uninterested in their jobs. At most locations, the employees and whole restaurant buzz with energy and orders fly out of the kitchen super fast but not here. Food tasted fine, but the atmosphere killed it. Not sure if I'll go back to this location. Totally disappointing. Hopefully someone at corporate will notice and make some changes as this seems to be the norm for this location. This would have never happened when it was family owned. read more

I usually prefer Buona over Portillo's but seeing Minneapolis does not have one this was a good alternative seeing I was in the mood for a Chicago dog and Italian beef. The decor is typical of Portillo's, large, open eclectic. The gentleman who took my order was an older bald guy who seemed less than thrilled to be there. After I placed my order I waited for over 15 minutes while people who ordered before (at least 10) received their orders and were on their way. Seeing I only had two items I was perplexed as to why so many other orders were being fulfilled before mine. Once I finally was given my food it was warm but definitely not hot the way it should be seeing it took so long to make. I asked for it to be dipped and it was barely moist at best. Hence one of the reasons I prefer Buona over Portillo's, Buona Italian beef "Baptized" is dripping with their delicious gravy. Man, now I want Buona after describing it. Over all the experience was mediocre and I would only go back if I was dying for a taste of Chicago, albeit a watered down version of it. read more

I have been several times since they have opened. I've never eaten in, but have ordered off the app with no issues. My order is always ready at the takeout counter when I arrive. I, and another have gotten the beef and Italian sausage and it is amazing! By far our favorite, it's what we got our first visit, and continue to get. Another person has ordered the spaghetti with only good things to say. The onion rings are great and they also have the best cheese sauce I've had. The only thing I got when I was there that I WOULDN'T recommend is the chicken tenders.. they were very chewy/rubbery and seemed frozen. read more

When they opened they had lots of employees and it was super efficient. My second time here, there is a fraction of the workers. 35 minutes is way too long to wait for a hot dog. There are management issues that need attention if Portillo's is going to succeed in Maple Grove. read more

Love Portillo's in Chicago, not in Maple Grove. What has always been a fantastic experience, not only in terms of food quality, quantity and customer service, has been ruined by an inept management and implementation staff. In Chicago, you will find a clean, efficient, well oiled machine. In Maple Grove, you will find chaos, filthy tables and floors, a condiment station that looks like it has been maintained by a toddler, and you get to have that experience for a really long time. Everything here is wrong, dirty, and slow. I was here the first week it opened, I gave them a pass due to them needing to work the kinks out and find their stride as a management team. I am back today, and it is worse and much dirtier. Way to ruin a cool experience and damage a long standing businesses' reputation. Could not be less impressed. If you do come here order on their app. It is 3x faster and you don't have to wait in a huddled mass with a gaggle of confused, disgusted, and hangry patrons. read more

My sister told me to try this place, as I'm a huge "Chicago" type hot dog fan, and have made my own version many, many times for cookouts and tailgating. We don't have any (in my opinion) good Chicago dog places in St. Paul. The "Chicago Taste Authority", with their off-the-shelf condiments and same-old, same-old dogs, does not count. I have yet to try Portillo's version of the Chicago dog, and may amend this review when I do. I went there for lunch - I was surprised by the amount of employees they had behind the counter, as the place (at 11 a.m.) wasn't very busy. I found out in 45 minutes why they had all those people, as the place filled up fast. Anyway, it was suggested that I try the Italian sausage and beef sandwich. Afraid of getting too sloppy and going back to work, I only ordered it with "extra gravy", rather than dipped. I have been told this was a mistake, as the dipped version is better. I'm not sure how it could be, and I really like to hold my sandwich without it falling apart. It was delicious. I'm a fan. The Italian sausage was very tasty, the beef sliced paper thin and full of flavor (and gravy), and the bun was fine too. The service was fast, friendly and helpful. The guy I was with got his with fries, which were nothing special - just regular crinkle fries, though not super hard and crispy, which was nice, but he couldn't eat even half of them, after the sausage and beef. The atmosphere was pretty casual, with lots of room and an outdoor patio. The price was right. Not quite sure how anyone can complain about the prices here. It is NOT expensive, unless you go way overboard and get some of the oversized sandwiches and a ton of sides, or a full rack rib dinner, and then you're going to pay a lot anywhere. A lot of items are under $6. A couple days later i went again, as I was impressed the first time. I got the beef and cheddar croissant, and they dipped it without me asking for it that way. I didn't really care, and the gravy is really good, and it was good overall, but didn't hold a candle to the Italian sausage and beef. To start, I thought the food was really pretty good. I had the Italian beef sandwich with hot peppers. My husband had the chicken club. Both were good esp for the fast food type experience it is. My "beef" is with the service. We were greeted with a lovely woman who explained everything, but it went downhill from there. At the order station, 2 girls were ready, but barely acknowledged you. Then, I couldn't understand the question the girl who ended up taking our order. she made NO effort to make it clearer . Then at pick up, don't you dare ask about your malt when the rest of your food is there & ready. Is rudeness their "schtick "? Not a fan. I grew up on Portillos in the Chicago area and was excited to have one near my new home town. Unfortunately this location is no where near the standard I was used to. Compared to the Chicago locations, my experience was unfriendly, completely unorganized, and took 3 times longer to get my order. (Both for drive through and walk-in) I have been to this location a few times now hoping for improvement, but sadly not yet. A few times my order was even wrong too. I will come back because the food at Portillos is outstanding, and yes it's worth the wait, but make sure you give yourself time and check your bags of food before you leave. read more

I grew up in Chicago, a huge fan of PORTILLO's. I couldn't wait for the Maple Grove location to open so I could enjoy a great Italian beef sandwich. Saturday evening at 10 PM I waited 40 minutes in the drive thru for a sandwich and soft drink. There were no employees outside taking orders that night as is customary at all other PORTILLO's locations I have ever been to. With employees outside taking orders you get your food right away. Your food is great, your prices are reasonable, but please don't make your loyal customers wait in line for over half an hour. read more

With a friend we drove from Excelsior to Maple Grove expecting a great Portillo's Italian beef sandwich, like the kind we loved when we lived in Chicago. But Portillo's has lost something, the beef was not as flavorful and the sweet peppers were bland and just two of them. What happened to the juicy, garlicy and a little oily sandwiches? These are bland. It is like Portillo's decided to cut corners and costs and hope no one notices.
