If you eat inside, you can expect retro, clean vibes. As native Chicagoans, we've been going to Portillo's for many years. When they moved out here several years ago, we were really happy. Although it's not close to us, we go there a couple times a year. We both love Chicago favorites. Between us, weusually gets the Italian beef dipped or the Chicago dogs. But this time we both had the Italian beef. If I had one quibble, their gardiniera is not very spicy and they charge extra for it. We went yesterday at lunchtime and it was less than stellar. We both ordered hot dogs Chicago style with everything. The food execution was poor. They slapped all the ingredients together haphazardly. My jumbo dog was room temp at best. The buns were way over steamed. The tomatos were so unripe they were almost unidentifiable. When I returned the unhot hot dog, the guy at the counter seemed a bit perturbed instead of trying to fix a customer experience. The restroom was dirty and disgusting. The French fries earned the 2nd star. They were the only good bite of the meal. Portillos is supposed to make great dogs. Maybe they need to get back to fundamentals. I got this big beef sandwich and it was pretty skimpy for the biggest sandwich they have on the menu. BUT I did ask this gentleman in a black shirt if this was how it was supposed to be. At first he said "yeah that's the big beef." I asked if it looked good and he said it could have a little more beef and he got me a side of beef. The gentleman working took care of it. After hearing about Portillo's, you know, the favorite Chicago restaurant where they put a whole piece of chocolate cake in their shakes, I was so excited to see one in Scottsdale! We planned ahead aka skipped lunch to go check this place out. The comedian "fluffy" also tells a story of this shake and we watched it to prepare for the experience. We ordered contactless inside but they had a drive through. We started with the shakes only just in case we got too full for food (which we did). But the shake itself was incredible if you love chocolate cake. It reminded me of having cake and ice cream at a birthday! The frosting was very present. The reason I'm not giving it 5 stars was the selection. They had a lemon cake and a lemon strawberry cake as options. I was hoping for a non-citrus fruit flavor. We didn't really interact with the staff so I can't rate that, but the ambiance was really cool! Not sure if I'd ever go back, but happy to have had the chance to finally try this shake. Had a BOGO coupon that just expired and went thru the drive thru, the girl said she would honor it but couldn't do it from her tablet to go up to the 2nd window and "they will take care of it". Used to love Portillo's, but it's just not what it used to be. Not just at this location, but across the board. If you've never been here before, it's a super cute chain that specializes in beef dip sandwiches. Service here in Mesa was pretty bad- our cashier was friendly/borderline rude. But that's not what made this trip our last- it was the food... The sandwich just didn't have much flavor... The fries were kinda soggy... The chicken salad was small, expensive, and boring... If you don't mind crowds, this Portillo's is constantly busy during the lunch hour. We met friends visiting the area for a bite. During the busy hour, it pays to find a table before ordering. We ordered the plant based dog with fries, 2 chopped salads with fries and a chicken salad and beverages. You order and pay at one end. Pick up your food at the marked area. You will find your order number on the receipt. Service is fairly quick although salads come up much faster than a dog. Salads are good sized. I cannot finish it in one sitting. The dog comes with a big pickle.pepperoncini, tomato, onion and relish. All were tasty and moderately priced. There is a drive through as well. I love the ambiance here and all the nostalgic decor. The jumbo dogs are "on point!" They are SO DELICIOUS it is difficult to deviate and enjoy other offerings on the menu. I have tried the Italian Beef Sandwich which is also good. I especially like it with the optional sweet peppers added. Their hamburgers are pretty good, too. The employees at the register are often short and they are not especially friendly. This is a shame. Also, I do not like the fact that the fan has been broken for a considerable amount of time that they have outside near the drive thru menu. This is intended to keep the employee standing outside taking orders in the AZ heat cooler. Now that temperatures are in excess of 100 degrees, daily, and we are going into our summer, this must be fixed immediately. Anything less is a disservice to your valued employees. read more

My wife and I stopped at Portillo's Taste of Chicago, dedicated to bringing Chicago-Style hot dogs, Italian beef, and burgers to the Valley. They have a fun '50s diner-meets-Hard Rock Cafe atmosphere. The staff is friendly and eager to serve. We tried one of their Famous Five: their Chicago-style Italian beef and a large order of onion rings. Everything was great. I'll take a good Italian beef sandwich over a cheesesteak any day, and theirs is beefy and juicy--it's so good. My father and I get together for lunch every weekend. One of the regular places we frequent is Portillo's of Scottsdale. It's a taste of Chicago hot dogs, and it's tasty, typically fast service, and a nice ambiance. The staff are always helpful, and they have a fun diner-theme to their announcements. They also say fun rhymes with their order numbers like "Order 102, we've got you" or "Order 107, welcome to heaven." Each time we order, we typically will get 2 or 3 charred jumbo dogs to share with a large fries and large onion rings. That's plenty for the two of us. Recently, there was an issue with the order. I think they dropped one of our dogs on the ground. They gave us a piece of chocolate cake to make it up to us (which honestly was just an apology for the meal arriving a few minutes late). I typically find all the food tastes delicious though every now and then when I come, there's at least one thing I need to have fixed. One issue (on my end) is that the first time I ordered, I didn't know the difference between a Jumbo Dog and a Hot Dog. Now, I know the Jumbo Dog is larger and a bit more expensive. But they're both great! I have also found that Portillo's offers coupons regularly. For instance, ASU students receive coupon booklets that include buy one dog, fries, & drink and get a dog free OR a free large fries with any purchase. There is also a text club that you can sign up on their website (https://www.portillos.com). Also on their website, you can sign up for the Birthday Club to receive a piece of chocolate cake around your birthday. There is also a survey on every receipt where you can earn a free large fries for completing the survey. You can use the app to order and the free large fries coupon (via the survey) doesn't expire and can be used with no purchase necessary. Note that the birthday cake does expire. The location is great and easy to access with a drive-through line and plenty of parking to eat inside. I certainly recommend that anyone go to Portillo's for some good Chicago-style hot dogs. read more

Portillo's is a nice family restaurant that I wish there was more of, especially in the Bay Area, which is where I'm from. There is plenty of seating. The vibe is relaxed, filled with an older crowd. I can see families coming here after sporting events or family gatherings. They pump mostly music from 70s over the PA. There's a kiosk where you order food. There's also a cashier area, where you can order if you prefer to pay with cash. There's plenty on the menu. My wife and I split a sausage sandwich. It was really good. I loved their fries. It's the old fashioned crinkled kind. Those are the best. The pricing is reasonable. Next time I'm in town...I'm definitely dropping by. read more

I was super excited to try their garden dog and went with everything and some grilled onions. Also, ordered their chicken tenders with some fries. The service is rather very slow for a drive through, we had to wait quite a bit for our order to arrive. Luckily, they have two windows for the order pickup. The garden dog is really good and I thoroughly enjoyed the flavor and the hot dog itself. Vegan review (I know... but it was to meet a friend). First - thank you Portillo's for offering a totally vegan hot dog -- the Plant-based Garden Dog. I have never had a "Chicago-style" dog, so having lunch with a die-hard Portillo's fan gave me a chance to try it. Plus, the crinkle-cut fries are vegan! I was dully worried when I ordered the vegan dog and the counter person asked if it would be the only one in the order. That's a big flashing red light for vegans, "Oh no, they need to pull it out of the freezer." I do not think I was wrong. Our order took so very long to come out. At least 10 orders after ours came out before ours. Probably more. I get it, I do. It is NOT a place for vegans. But still... The hot dog itself seemed like it was cooked a bit too long (or maybe freezer burn)? But, it was just fine with all the lovely toppings and hit the spot. I was so hungry by the time I got it I forgot to take a picture of it unwrapped! I wouldn't go out of my way to visit Portillo's again, but it is nice to know that if I am ever out and about, and in the mood for a Chicago dog, I know where I can find one. We visited Portillos while in Scottsdale hoping for a taste of my hometown, Chicago. I was not disappointed. The vibe here was pleasantly vibrant, surrounded by all sorts of Chicago memorabilia. We ordered a Chicago-style dog, a dipped beef sandwich with peppers, onion rings and a slice of chocolate cake. Everything was so good. The beef sandwich and peppers were big, juicy and flavorful, just like I remember. The hot dog was surprisingly my favorite of the two sandwiches. It was juicy, full of sweet and spicy grilled onions and peppers. Messy and delicious. We split the sandwiches, but I could have ate the whole hotdog myself! The onion rings at Portillos are sweet, with slightly crunchy breading that's not a bit greasy. We saved the chocolate cake for later, and wished we'd gotten 2 pieces. The cake is so moist and fluffy, with just enough rich chocolate buttercream to feel totally decadent. We're going to stop on our way out of town for one last taste of home before we head back to Albuquerque. I'm wondering if Portillos has plans to expand to New Mexico? read more

I placed my second order for the day with host Michelle order #216. My first ordered was with a different host and I asked her for her suggestion and she suggested the beef sandwich. The picture look good with the peppers and stuff on it, so I ordered it. When I receive the order, the bread was mushy and I can't eat Mushy bread and There were no peppers. I went back up to the register and voiced my opinion to Michele who took my second order and I told her exactly that the bread was mushy and that the picture showed there was peppers but she pointed out which was my bad. It was an additional $.99 for peppers , which is ridiculous. The sandwich should come as the picture shows. But that's my fault for not eating the fine print on the menu board. She didn't even offer anything or apologize or nothing. There was no sympathy from this lady at all. She was just a complete statue doing her job and no customer service involved. I ordered the Maxwell and she asked me if I wanted the mustard and I said no and that's when she told me that you have to order it and take off whatever you don't want as the Maxwell comes with mustard and onions. She did a good job to inform me. They are the employees that know the menu and should point things out to the customer, especially since this is my second visit. This location is clean inside and out. Lot's of parking. Large indoor with lots of tables and chairs. Pretty large outside area to eat (as shaded as much as possible in Scottsdale). The kiosks were simple to use and very effective. Good came out quickly on a Monday at 1pm. Friendly staff and worked a good speed. Highly recommended if you like this style of food.
