If you're considering Alliance, don't. Roughly a year or so ago I hired them due to a leak coming from my chimney. After their inspection it was determine the flashing was in poor condition and needed to be replaced. This was done. About a month or two later the leak returned and some additional work on the flashing performed. Cut to earlier this year and the leak once again returned. Having lost faith in Alliance I went with another PDX-based fireplace and chimney company. On inspection they immediately asked who had done the work being going over how it was some of the worst, most incompetent/novice work they'd seen, went over the issues, and provided a quote for new flashing. Once work started and the Alliance flashing was removed it was then brought to my attention that not only was the flashing problematic but that the brickwork underneath it was eroded, quite noticeably so. While not Alliance's fault, this was called out as a contributing factor to the leak and should have called out when the original flashing was removed. Should have. They never brought it to my attention. Separate from work performed, Justin was pretty sloppy with communication and paperwork, as it would sometimes require 2 or 3 voicemails before I would hear back from him, as I'd notice issues with the quotes, and as I received calls from him from a few different phone numbers. There was also a tarp left wrapped around the chimney for a few weeks that he had no clue about. In summary: don't walk, run away. Between sloppy admin skills, bad communication, poor quality of work, and the willingness to do the bare minimum while covering up larger issues, I can't in good faith suggest Justin or his "team" to anyone. read more

I moved into a place with a fireplace and chimney, so I hired this business through Yelp Projects for cleaning and inspection services. They were responsive, arrived on time, and appeared knowledgeable. However, I'm deducting stars because I wasn't fully convinced about the thoroughness of their inspection and the value. For example, they didn't check whether the gas fireplace was working and mentioned that the fireplace was clean enough, which resulted in the entire visit--greeting, inspecting, cleaning, and leaving--taking less than 20 minutes. Despite this, I was charged the full flat fee. While I understand it was their busy season, I expected a more detailed inspection for the price. Overall, the experience was okay, but I wouldn't recommend them for anyone seeking an in-depth evaluation of their fireplace or chimney. read more

Using the Yelp business finder feature was fantastic! Seriously felt so blessed to have Justin and his team work on our chimney. His response time was really quick. We had to rebuild part of our chimney due to buyers that we negotiated with on our home sale. He was able to come the next day to do a quote and send an estimate. I had another company through Yelp respond as well. But their pricing was competitive. He was very honest and genuine about the masonry work that they could do for us. His team came in, set up, and nearly rebuilt the first day and it is not a small chimney. The crew also cleaned up the messy job. I would not recommend this company. We agreed upon a full tuck point of my chimney and just Justin subcontracted it to guys who did as much as was in eye sight and then offered me a $300 discount. He never bother to check on the work. Then after I insisted it be a FULL tuck point the next guy to come out spent another 2.5 days finishing the work the last guys skimped on. The original crew reportedly got fired but again, Justin never once checked on the work even after the second guy came. I think he sent him photos but if you're here picking up equipment anyway why wouldn't you make sure it's done right? Both crews left such a mess, after the second guy left I was just appreciative he actually did a FULL tuck point I didn't say anything. I had artificial turf they got mortar everywhere which Justin gave me a $100 discount after the first crew but I would have rather they just put tarps down and power washed my siding rather than leaving me a mess to clean up and drip all over the children's toys in the yard. The latest issue was the flashing on the chimney leaking. Maybe this was them maybe not but I got the roof replaced three years, had zero issues until these guys replace the flashing on my chimney. The roofer who replaced my roof was nice enough to make an emergency visit at no charge and fix it but he didn't speak much English and didn't understand that the chimney guy replaced flashing so couldn't tell me if it was their fault or the chimney guys but there's pretty strong evidence these guys didn't install the new flashing correctly and caused my roof to leak. Luckily it's wood paneling on ceiling so there was no interior damage but I would be very weary of these guys. tl;dr these guys know what their talking about and follow up when there's issues but they don't quality control or do it right in the first place. read more

All of a sudden, everyone is an expert. Second, there are two types of professional in the home repair trade. The first type tries to scare you, and sell you on services that you may not need. The second type is much rarer, and is characterized by honesty and transparency. Justin is the second type of professional. He came out to my home, immediately removed his shoes upon entry (I fully judge people by whether they respect our no-shoes policy without having to be asked), and assessed the situation. He inspected indoors and out, and determined that the service I had requested was not necessary. He offered a couple of helpful suggestions for getting the home ready for sale, and left without charging me a dime. Hire this guy. He's awesome. read more

Stay far away from these guys. We had a leaking chimney that they replaced. Their first build failed. The second try wasn't much better; after replacing the chimney we had more leakage than before. Every time someone else would come over, they'd try to point out something else that might be the leakage cause. But most of the things they pointed out were things THEY HAD DONE. It felt like they were just looking desperately for excuses not to be accountable for their crappy work. I had a roofing guy come out to see if it was a roof problem. Referring to the counterflashing, he said, "This is the worst flashing job I've ever seen." I took it up with Justin at Alliance, and he basically wasn't having it. And his solution eventually was to ghost me -- simply to stop engaging. Ignored calls and texts (but I could see that he had read the texts). I then hired the roofing guy to redo everything around the chimney and redo the counterflashing. I then tried to get Alliance to pay some of the cost of repairing what they had screwed up. Discussions led to ghosting until I threatened to take them to small claims court (I had plenty of evidence), and even then, they ignored me until the day I was going to file, at which point they agreed to try to negotiate a settlement, which we did. Of course, they didn't pay me right away, instead wanting a monthly amount until complete. That happened, but it was odd... monthly payments got later, and when I would message the woman helping with that aspect (she never ghosted), the check would magically show up. It seemed like they were hoping I'd forget about it. I did get the full amount, but I had to dog it. Then we got more leaking after the first really big storm this winter. Because I'm never working with Alliance again, I brought someone else in. When he came back down from his inspection, he said, "Who did this work? They didn't know what they were doing!" He pointed out that the cap on the chimney hadn't been sealed and wasn't attached to a "flue tile" but just the cap material, which wears away. The wind had literally detached the cap, and it could flap in the wind. On a 2-year-old chimney. Because that was open, the guy could look down inside. This is the kicker: Alliance rebuilt the outside brick part of the chimney, but they didn't rebuild the interior mason pipe or anything. It was just a big cavity that the smoke went through. And there was a rope for some reason tied in there and going down one of the flues. That thing could catch fire! It's the most incompetent work I've ever had to pay for, and I'll ultimately have paid more than three times the cost of the original job by the time I get this thing right since now someone else needs to completely rebuild it -- again! So SAVE YOUR MONEY!! Pay someone else a little more if necessary. My bad for not doing enough due diligence before hiring them; hopefully this helps your due diligence. We like working with small companies like Alliance where the owner gets personally involved in the projects rather than having a sales team prospecting for business. We felt that Justin was focused on the quality of the work and high customer satisfaction, rather than monthly bookings. Justin was great. We were pleased with the quality of the work. Never called back - even though I called back on second day. I would not recommend this company for brick work.

I reached out to Alliance Chimney to get an estimate on repairs for our chimney. Justin emailed back fairly quickly to get our address and more information. After a couple days I didn't hear back so I gave him a call. We finally nailed down a time for him to stop by. No one ever showed up. I emailed him asking if he was still going to come by. He said he had knocked, got no answer so checked out the chimney, but made it seem like nothing needed to be done, the chimney looked fine. This seemed very strange, because I knew work needed to be done. So I called him and asked if he had gone to the right house. Turns out he went to the wrong house...so he said he would stop by the following day on his way home. Guess what? Yep, he never came by. So the next morning I emailed asking if he was just not interested in giving us a quote anymore. Haven't gotten a response back, so I'm guessing he's got enough business that we're just a waste of his time. He sounded a bit disorganized over the phone, so maybe it shouldn't have been a surprise he never ended up coming. We're pretty disappointed as he had good reviews, and we really need some repairs done, but it sounds like maybe he has too much going on, and he just doesn't need our business. read more

I've lived in Vancouver WA for almost 30 years and it still blows my mind how unprofessional and unreliable some companies can be. I had an appointment scheduled to sweet the chimney. When Justin showed up, I pointed to an issue at the top of our chimney. We agreed that the problem should be repaired before sweeping. Justin told me he would get back to me with an estimate for the repair within a day or two. A week later, when I didn't hear back, I called the company and left a message. No one returned my call. So I called the number Justin had called me from prior to coming over. He picked up and acted surprised. After being told I was still waiting for that quote, he said he'd check my account and call me back, but he didn't. I wish he had told me he didn't want the job instead of letting me hang. After going though PGE power outages last weekend we felt the urgent need to get our fireplace in shape for any emergencies. We had Alliance Chimney and Masonry do an inspection on our fireplace recently. Justin answered all our questions and gave us a good overview of do's and don'ts. Most of the other companies said they would charge us for an inspection but Alliance was one of the few that did the inspection in free and only charged for sweeping if required. These guys were awesome. Justin showed up on time and check out our chimney in our 90s built house. Every time we lit a fire the smoke wouldn't evacuate the flue. We scheduled for a service and cleaning as we weren't sure when the last time the fireplace was used. Justin checked out the chimney and realized that it had not been used that much so recommended against the cleaning (saving $$). He also recommended a couple of other things to help move the cold air at the top of the chimney before we needed to spend any more money. My roof leaked several years ago, and another company sold me a new roof-which only fixed my problem for 3 years. I cringed when it started leaking again. The warranty covered the roof, but apparently the roof was not the issue, and several chimney companies weren't calling back. Alliance, a small business, was able to come out and fix the problem fairly painlessly-the cost seemed reasonable, and he was very nice and communicative about everything. He came when he said he would, texted me the details and cost, did what he could that day-and was back the next day to finish up. I didn't even have to leave work, we just texted back and forth. It's rained pretty hard several times since, and I've stopped cringing as I arrive home-leaking seems to have stopped.
