So this place is absolutely gorgeous! The outside set up they have is a wonderful tropical feel, and at night it's breath taking and feels like you are truly on an island with the palm trees and lights. However, that is really all they have going for them. Our waiter was very friendly, however he had no menu knowledge .. questions i asked he had no answers for and had to go and ask( which would take forever) he was incharge of the whole outside area as i could tell, lots of tables. I had sangria, which was tasty- but was gone in less than a minute because it was mostly ice.. and by the time the waiter got back to us i was ordering a pitcher. I am a big seafood person we started off the with seafood app- it was a sampler of supposedly blue point oysters clams, shrimp, crab meat and lobster. I LOVE blue points. And these were either not blue points, or the WORST batch I've ever eaten. They were not chucked correctly, so we're very difficult to get out of the shell- gritty- stringy and just all around terrible. Shrimps were alright plump and a nice crunch-crab not bad- lobster was over cooked, rubbery & chewy. I ordered a chicken Parmesan over spaghetti and it was just not good. The quality of the chicken was not good and the sauce was terrible. we felt very over looked and ended up being there a lot longer than we wanted to be. Came here a bit over two weeks ago, and initially wasn't going to leave a review. I know reviews don't speak the whole story of a restaurant, but after reading other people's experiences, there is clearly a management issue here. We were a party of 8, and it wasn't too busy of a night. We sat down at a nice table and started to relax. We had brought our own bottles because when we called the hostess on the phone said there was a $25 surcharge if you byo, no problem we said. Then after 10 minutes of not being greeted by our waitress, she comes to our table to tell us is a $25 surcharge PER bottle. We understood and didn't think it was too big of a deal. It took our waitress more than five minutes to come back an open our bottles as well as bring glasses, and another 10-15 to come actually take our order. Food came out excellent and we enjoyed our dinners, just the experience in all wasn't the best. It didn't feel as if we were an important table spending a lot of money and was more like the management out in their amateur wait staff for the night. The place is very cute from the outside and even inside; however, the quality of the food is not good...I went there for an event, and the ambiance was great mainly because of the people. When we were served our appetizers, they didn't even look appetizing. Moreover, the salmon I ordered was extremely dry and did not seem to have any sauce or flavour. Great place to grab lunch! I've never tried dinner here before because the lunch prices are too good to pass up. Entrees are large and come with a salad all for around 9 to 12 dollars. There is also a huge selection to choose from and they even have lunch specials. The only thing is the service is SLOW. You must allow yourself at least 60 to 90 minutes for lunch here which is pretty outlandish especially when you need to return to work. Came on a Saturday for lunch after a recommendation from a friend. I had the lobster and asparagus risotto, which was perfectly creamy with large chunks of lobster scattered liberally throughout. The portion was huge, like dinner portion huge. It was a great deal, especially since nothing on the lunch menu reached a double-digit price. The rest of the group seemed happy with their choices also, but I was too busy gobbling up my risotto to notice. The building itself makes a great impression, like a bright yellow Italian chateau randomly transported in the middle of New Jersey. After reading about the beautiful outdoor seating that was created at Portobellos, I visited twice for lunch with friends. It was delightful. One visit was for a group of 2 and another visit was for a group of 4. Both times I arrived around noon and did not have a reservation. We were seated promptly both times. Today was another story. I was treating a friend to lunch today and had been telling her how beautiful the outdoor seating was. Today was cloudy and drizzly, but I knew the tents would keep us dry. We waited in the socially distanced line to be seated When we got to the host station, we were asked if we had a reservation. It was about 12:15 and the outdoor seating was about 25% full. The host headed towards the restaurant building and we wanted to sit outdoors, so I stopped him and told him we wanted outdoor seating. He mumbled something about having to seat people both on the porch and the covered outdoor dining. He showed us a small, dark table up against the wall on the porch. There was a lot of noise from the street and I again stated we wanted to be outside. He turned and said, "This is what I have for you" and walked back to the host stand. We again stood in line to speak to him about sitting outside. His response was, "I showed you what I have available. And you don't want it." At least 75% of the tables were empty in the outdoor area. It was clear we were not going to be seated, so we left. In case you are wondering, we were both dressed nicely, and i was very embarrassed since i was there with a guest. I had been raving about what a nice setting it was, and instead we were refused service. Right before we left, he said, " I showed you what seats I have available." The porch was very full and the tables did not seem socially distanced. And at least 75% of the outdoor area was open. Tonight was our first time at Portobello in Oakland. Great food ... horrible, strange service. We had 6:30PM reservations. We arrived at 6:15PM and we were seated immediately. Our waiter was super friendly and had a nice sense of humor. He gave us menus but then didn't come back for 30 minutes to take our order. Then he left us and came back a few minutes later to double check what we had ordered. He seemed confused and a little scatterbrained. At some point, someone from the restaurant came over and took our picture. We weren't sure what that was about but we went along with it. Later, a woman who didn't speak English came by and tried to sell us the printed photo in a frame. I have seen this kind of thing at Great Adventure or Disneyworld but not in a nice restaurant. So strange and tacky. The table next to us was trying to ask the woman questions but she had no idea what they were saying. Anyway, our food was delicious, so that was a plus. We had calamari, a pasta dish and "Veal, Chicken, Shrimp Anthony". My wife asked for a second cup of coffee but never got it. Before we had even ordered dessert, the folks at the tables near us (that arrived after us) were all done and leaving. We decided to order dessert since we were out celebrating our 32nd Wedding Anniversary. We ordered a slice of Cheesecake and the Lava cake special. Thirty five minutes later our waiter came by and asked us how dessert was. WE WERE STILL WAITING FOR IT. Then he asked us what we wanted ... again. Listen this place is beautiful inside and out but the service was terrible. I ate here last night with my boyfriend for Valentine's Day and our waiter was grumpy and rude. Our steak wasn't cooked well and the cheese on top was sour. When we told the waiter and manger about it they made us feel bad. If you read some of the reviews about this restaurant, one thing that gets praised often is the pleasant ambiance/environment/decorations. It's true, Portobello's sets the tone excellently in this area. The place looks great. However, in other areas, Portobello is slacking. The food and drink selections on their menu were a disappointment. They have very limited choices. Not to mention, they are expensive too. It stinks because you read over the menu a few times and you find yourself a bit bummed out. I ordered a Ketel sprite for my drink. The waitress rushed us with our food order which is always a nice bonus. I winded up ordering a salad. I wanted ranch or italian dressing, but they only had cesar and bleu cheese....STOCK UP ON SALAD DRESSING POROTBELLO'S!! When our drinks came out they were iced down heavily. The glasses were filled 3/4ths with ice. I should have asked the waitress if we could get some drink with our ice.....Upon tasting our drinks we realized they were also watered down too. Sweet. We had our rehearsal dinner here and it was wonderful. We are so thankful that we found Portobello restaurant and Marcello to help plan the event. He was awesome to work with by being so helpful and accommodating. It was on a Saturday evening and he was able to seat our group of 60 upstairs so we had the whole space to ourselves. All of our guests were commenting on how beautiful the place was and how it felt like we were in Italy. Our servers were very nice and the food was good and plentiful. We had bruschetta, bread and butter and delicious sesame crackers for appetizers. The pasta was cooked very al dente, some people didn't like that but that's all preference. My husband and I are vegan so they were able to do a pasta primavera and a beautiful plate of grilled veggies. The pasta dish was a whole entree so we ended up packing the grilled veggies for home. Our waiter Mike (Who happens to look just like Neil Patrick Harris) was nothing short of perfect. He was there for every request and even made some great suggestions. I had the Penne Arrabbiata. I have gone to both the Portobello banquet hall and the restaurant for over 10 years now. I had booked a family holiday lunch on October 23rd for December 2nd, well in advance. Got to the restaurant to find out that they had no seating due to 3 scheduled parties. If you had no space and have multiple parties, why are you open for public dining?? The lady and gentleman at the desk both gave our group the runaround and then proceeded to take us to the enclosed outside patio next to the bar. There were no one in there, no table settings, no lights, no music, no service. It was awful. We sat in the room for 5 mins. And asked if we could be moved. The gentleman proceeded to say there was nothing in the building to accommodate us. We also had a handicapped patron with us and there is nothing in either building that is handicapped accessible. We then left and went to Aldo's in Wyckoff which was able to accommodate us with ease. What a disgrace Portobello has turned into. Extremely disappointed and angry about the whole fiasco. I am saddened to have to write this review about our last 2 trips to their outdoor dining during COVID. First trip we didn't have a waitress but the food was excellent. The manager finally served us. Chalked it up to growing pains to the newly opened outdoor dining. Second and final trip was 8/1 for lunch. We were frustrated by how many of their staff were not properly wearing face coverings. First a man in white pants and white shirt comes by with a covering not only below his nose but below his top lip. He put another setting on the table for us. Then we saw a food runner bring the food to the table next to us. He did had a black mask on - kudos for that but did not cover his noise. He was up close with everyone at that table reaching over them to put the food on the table. I am sorry this is not OK, nor is it safe. . I know times are different but we are not going to spend money to go out to eat if we do not feel safe and having some reach over everyone at the table without a proper face covering is not OK. Do not be fooled by the look of their outdoor dining they absolutely do not practice COVID safety measures and we will not return. Such a shame. I'm not sure why I have to give them the full star. They couldn't seem to give us anything we ordered or contracted for. Booking a party here was the biggest mistake we could make. Contracted one room on the first floor, were shoved into another in the second that didn't fit our party and was difficult for our senior guests to get to. Everything was crammed because the room was too small. Service was even worse. Many people didn't get simple things they ordered, right up to the guest of honor having to wait 20 minutes for a simple bar beverage. Closing blow was when they apparently cut our cake with a spoon. Instead of slices, we had a mound of mush. Never again. Save yourselves and skip this place. I've lived in the area my entire life and have ordered takeout here in the past, but I only recently went to dine in for the first time. Putting the other bad reviews aside because most focused on politics rather than the actual food and service- I came in here a fresh clean slate. Immediately, I was at awe when our server, upon learning my mother and I were from Egypt, exclaimed that he hated Egyptians because he previously had a bad experience with an Egyptian employee who was stealing from him. The server than casually mentions (don't ask me how he managed to connect the two because I don't know), that he was "framed" of assault before. Honestly- that should've been it right there and we got up and left- but somehow, we didn't. We ordered our food- which was good. Nothing spectacular, but it was actually good. Although the service experience definitely overshadowed the food. I ordered a glass of wine- which never made it way over. After his original remakes, the server was rather absentee- which although was a relief- was rather inconvenient as it took over a half hour to get the check. Overall- I would not recommend this establishment- if only simply for the egregious behavior of this server. read more

Out server Alisha was really nice, well prepared and ready to answer to all the question we had! The fried calamari and coconut shrimp are the best I had in a long time!! I went here this weekend for dinner with my family. About 2 months ago I was diagnosed with celiac disease which has made it near impossible and stressful to find restaurants willing to accommodate these needs. I called ahead and the staff was extremely knowledgeable on which items would be gluten free such as pasta, sauces, etc. When I asked in person our waiter explained which sauces would need to be subbed out, which drinks were gluten free and gave recommendations on what to order/ how to modify. When my food came out he guaranteed it was gluten free and I never got sick. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.... We had our daughters first holy communion lunch at Portobello's with 20 family members that traveled from out of town to be with us on this special day. The restaurant service was terrible. They overbooked the facility and only had 2 servers working 5 large tables of 20+ people at each table. An entire party of 20 + at the table across from us literally walked out. There was no bread on the table when we arrived, all the drink orders came back wrong and what should have been a two hour lunch was a 4 hour disaster. The manager was nowhere to be found and they did nothing to try to 'make things right'. This restaurant is a complete embarrassment. If a restaurant cannot support the number of guests that you take reservations for, then you should not take those reservations and waste peoples time and money. I would highly recommend anyone thinking of going to this restaurant to go somewhere else. We lived in NJ for 25 years nearby to this usually fine restaurant. COVID has taken its toll on this venerable spot. Beautiful indoor or outdoor seating on this warm summer evening. We chose indoors to suit our older friends. Small clues should have warned us. Looking out at the setting sun through dirty windows. Maybe just an oversight. Simply leaving a pitcher of water to serve ourselves . . . when entrees start at $28? Déclassé. Our waiter was young and seemed attentive. Better than the young waitress at the door adjusting her hair using her phone as a mirror. But his role should have been as a busboy. He mistakenly heard fennel salad when the order was Mediterranean chopped salad. The dinner salads came out with large chunks of iceberg lettuce mixed with large chunks of romaine. Choosing octopus as an appetizer was a good selection. Excellent! The accompanying Beet salad was horribly insipid. The beets were soggy lumps of cold mush, either overcooked or overfrozen. Instead of pistachios, candied walnuts. One friends had red snapper which looked to be wonderful. Our other friend had grilled chicken that was pounded into a scallopini, then grilled. She didn't complain, but took half home. We got charged for the dinner salad mistake and the young waiter put his own money down to reimburse us. He said it would come out of his pay anyway. We paid anyway, gave his $16 back and gave him two tips - 20% + find a better place to work. This place is overpriced, Il-managed and totally off my recommendation list. I came here on a date, and the food was the best part. I guess that's good enough for 4 stars. The atmosphere is very 1970s-graceful - dated with those tall chandeliers, wood accents, kinda dark, white linens. The sort of place you'd have a wedding in the 1970s or bring your grandparents in the 1990s. Not quite elegant, definitely not modern, but feeling like you might have gone here to try to impress your prom date 20 years ago without blowing the last of the $40 your dad lent you for the night. Service was a bit funny - at one point we caught the waitress kneeling down while talking to another waiter, possibly the head waiter. It was just odd. I decided she could have been one of the kids in the Von Trapp movie 50 years ago. The rest of it was fine, inasmuch as she mostly left us alone to do our thing. I ordered the short rib ragu over pappardelle. The pasta wasn't spectacular, but there was a lot of short rib in it, and the prices really weren't that bad. I'm pretty sure there was also dessert involved, but I was not going to take photos of my food on a first date! Sorry! Priorities! In hindsight, I definitely should have just focused on the food. There were four of us at the table and we each ordered some version of pasta with shellfish (either red sauce or garlic and olive oil). All entrees came wIth an assortment of breads for the table and salads which were perfectly dressed. We all enjoyed our food (flavorful and large portions) and were overwhelmed by the great value (the same dishes would have cost much more at dinner time). Portobellos building is impressive and I was looking forward to eating there. We went on Father's Day and we will not hurry back. Where to start... It was not busy, but yet we had to wait for the maître d' to come back to the desk and get us seated about four minutes... Not a long time but annoying for a place that was not busy. We are seated next to a large wooden buffet that we did not realize at the time they actually use... So my daughter had to constantly be aware of people that were going in and out the area. No biggie.. The tall thin blonde waitress with short hair was neither kind, welcoming or accommodating. After taking everyone's order she got to the last person... My wife. My wife started to order one dish but was also considering a different one. When she hesitated because she was going to ask the waitress for a recommendation... The waitress said "I'll come back." And walked away. Then, our meals were delivered to the table while we were in the middle of our hors d'oeuvres. This really annoyed me.. (do you have them return the meals to the kitchen and finish the hors d'oeuvres? Or do you have them take away the unfinished hors d'oeuvres to make room?) There was not a lot of room on the table so things were sent away that we've not finished eating.... we took the meals. Portabella if you ever read this... Please learn how to make risotto. It's not just any rice splashed with some chicken broth... It takes a good quality rice and you have to cook it with love.. is there even an Italian in the kitchen? The rest of the food was fine.. like a solid "B" nothing to rave about.. So were eating our meals and the table that was next to us... a party of eight or nine... Had just left and after a while, a busboy came over and proceeded to stack all of the chairs that had been around their table, right in the middle of the room! They stay like that for about 15 to 20 minutes... Meanwhile no one had cleaned off the table. So we were left in this area with a long dirty table and stacked chairs... OK if you were eating in a warehouse... Not OK if you think you're "fine dining." (Remember, it was not busy.) Note to owner: Please don't reply talking about how you were always trying to improve... I don't know if Marchello is the owner but he is horrible. We walked in and he left us standing there and ignored us. We had to wait for someone else to come along and take care of us Then he refused to come to talk to us after we finished dinner and got our bill. He was to busy to take the 5 minutes to see what the issue was with his customer. Great customer service right? NOT!!!! My issue was is that we were there for lunch (spent over $200 mind you and I wanted to know how does fettuccine Alfredo go from $10 to $24 when u add 4 Yes I said 4 shrimp Yet if I were to order shrimp scampi it was $15 He was blatantly rude and obnoxious and made zero effort to make things right. All he did was bitch about how much it cost him for shrimp. I work in food service and can tell u They certainly did not cost him $14 for 4 shrimp!!! Can you say 100+ mark up!!! I told him where he could go as I was leaving I will never go there again I highly recommend against going unless you wanna be treated like crap!! read more

My favorite dish is their lobster Salad. Great nice portioned food at reasonable price. Good place private party and they have some DJ nights for dancing as well. Its funny we got served by the same waiter every time we visited. read more
