It's a cute place located inside the Soco Mix. That's about it. Service was ok, not overly friendly but not rude. No smiles. The coffee itself was horrible!! We got a cold brew and a shaken brown sugar espresso with salted cold foam. Both coffees tasted sour. I have never tasted spoiled coffee before but it tasted like the coffee had hints of mildew. The cold foam was blue and I was told it was made with a type of superfood algae. It was super thick like a overly whipped cream. It didn't have the salt kick or creaminess of a cold foam. . It also didn't melt into the coffee like a cold foam would. The flavor was so off putting. We explore new coffee shops almost twice a week. We have never tasted coffee like this before. It was very pricey which is ok if it's tasty but it wasn't. $15 for two drinks....my husband threw his away after 2 sips, took me about 4. What a waste of money! read more

This used to be one of the best places in Orange County to get coffee. I enjoyed it so much that I would buy coffee to bring home. It's very different now. I don't even know if they roast their own coffee anymore. Our drinks were not very good. They were not worth the wait. Everything looks very tired, shelves are bare, and no improvements or maintenance of the coffee bar area since I was last here a few years ago. Really gave a tired Starbucks vibe. Been eyeing a Portola Coffee for a number of years. I've been into specialty coffee beans for a few years and there are only a few roasters in the LA/OC area that do have. Before a quick business lunch in Costa Mesa, I had make a pit stop here. The rumor was Portola had a strawberry co-ferment available which I had to try. I had a cold brew which I prefer since I can taste the natural flavor notes. As a light roast, these beans produced strawberry and cantaloupe notes. So good, I took a bag of beans home. Portola is located in a food/crafts hall tucked in a square block of furniture and fixture shops. Really chill place to hang out and walk around. Worth a visit if you're into specialty coffee. read more

It's just a little kiosk so there's really not too much seating aside from a little bar area but there's more seating in this indoor shopping area (and also some spots outdoors too). Went to this place over the weekend to stop by after an event. This place is located in a building with other different shops around. It's a small shop but so cute around it. There's space to sit outside and just relax as well. The place has a lot of open space. When we went it was somewhat busy. We got the new wave if im not mistaken which was a brown sugar Shaken Espresso with their special foam on top. I took a sip of it directly from the lid trying to get everything with the foam but I didnt like it as much as when I mixed everything. I really liked the drink mixed with the foam. Such a cute spot. I am curious of where they source their coffee from and I've read a little bit about how their techniques are inspired from Japan on how they make their coffee. But, would try other things on the menu as well. They also have pastries which I haven't tried yet. read more

After seeing all the reviews, we decided to check out this roastery. I got their seasonal drink which was the banana latte and my husband got the chai tea latte. The banana was very light and didnt have much banana flavor. I also think the roast wasnt too strong and was a bit too light for me. It gave me a sour aftertaste too which i wasnt a fan of. My husband got the chai latte and that was really good. It was very creamy and smooth. Very refreshing on a hot day. The workers werent that friendly and their menu selection was minimal. read more

This place is located in a nice area with lots of seating. They're fairly busy on weekends so expect a bit of a wait. The staff is friendly and efficient. I ordered an oatmilk latte and almond croissant. Oatmilk Latte- Sweet and creamy with a good hit of espresso. A nice, hot drink when you're trying to wake up. Almond Croissant- Pastry is nice and fluffy with a light crisp outside. It has an almond custard filling inside that has a lovely flavor. You also get a topping of crunchy slivered almonds for extra texture. Great place for coffee and pastries! read more

I LOVE Portola! They are our go-to coffee spot! The people are so nice and their coffee is top notch - they are our go-to beans at home too. Plus, their pastries and burritos are quality! I love that they are within walking distance from the State Streets. Their seating area is perfect to camp out with your laptop or catch up with friends (SoCo is a beautiful location!). I only give 4/5 stars because I am disappointed in their matcha. I feel like a few months ago it was high quality and that dark, bright green color, but recently it seems like they've been using the cheap stuff and even saw them squirt pre-mixed matcha from a bottle in my matcha latte. The barista recommended the seasonal fall spice latte, which is the tastiest rendition of the PSL that I've ever had! They make their own sweet potato puree and top the drink off with this delicious marshmallow whip that I could eat a whole bowl of. Ooh where do I start with Portola Coffee Roasters? For starters, I unexpectedly found this while looking for a cafe to work in. I enjoyed that here was Wi-Fi in this food court area of the plaza. Ordering and pick-up are fairly straightforward with their hanging and standing signs... impressive given its circular shop setup - they really thought this through! Coffee? Amazing! Their espresso is bold - not too acidic or sour - and captures the right amount of sweetness, nuttiness, and caffeine to make it a delectable afternoon pick-me-up. In addition to their caffeine is their teamwork; I've never seen baristas work so closely in a cramped space. All staff members juggled their downtime with efficiency to churn out drinks. And for any science geeks / chemists out there, their Kyoto brewing system was a sight to see, I'm definitely interested in trying a Kyoto cold brew next time! I really enjoy the gold rush ice tea and the dirty chai latte. I have always ordered it hot but they had a great suggestion on a hot day to do an ice and it was amazing. The burritos are so tasty too! I love the green sauce! The staff is friendly. Years ago, I would frequent their Tustin location at the District, but those doors have long been shuttered. I still come by this flagship store (as it's the only remaining) for a cuppa sometimes. The vibes of soco are not really fair to judge the spot by. I think there's a sort of haughtiness that doesn't match with the coffee shop itself. However, that's not as important, because it's all about the java here. I don't know if they came under new management or what, but the entire store shifted from a dark and broody theme to this sort of corkboard nerd chic with major neon vibes. Think math class with all those multicolored post-its. Onto the coffee itself: I have indulged in quite a few options over the years, but I find myself coming back to one thing, especially as a treat. I get a mocha, hot or iced, it doesn't matter. If you have the heat tolerance, the hot is a treat. Great chocolatey flavor, along with pretty tasty espresso. I would probably get this every time if it weren't a sugar and fat bomb. Sometimes you deserve it, never forget that. For days I don't get a mocha, I get a cortado or a pourover, and they always hit pretty well for me. Go on and get stuck into one of OC's first specialty coffee roasters. read more

This place has been lackluster in the past, however today they were so on point! The two drinks we ordered were fairly spot on. I had the seasonal horchata latte, which actually gave me an authentic taste. My son had the strawberry Matcha and it was fairly flavourful and the Matcha came through! Typically other coffee shops have watered down Matcha drinks. He did mention that he couldn't taste the strawberry jam, but it still had the strawberry flavor. They roast their own beans, which is always a good sign, and it shows in the quality. I stopped in during the early afternoon and was served right away -- no line, just friendly, efficient staff. I went with the Kyoto cold brew, made with a single-origin bean, and it was easily one of the best cold brews I've had. Smooth and balanced, not watered down at all, with the flavors shining through beautifully. I picked up notes of dark chocolate and black cherry, which made it both rich and refreshing.
