Fries. Burgers and more fries. This place was not as impressive as its other competitive French fry joints. Came to check this place out at around 7pm and it was as empty church on a Wednesday afternoon. The place looked clean and decent. Went to order at the kiosk but like a dating scene I already saw a few red flags: lady at counter was on her phone and you had to flag her attention, her register was not working so I had to order at the kiosk, no cheese flavored (sold out?!?!?) fries and their bathroom was nasty. Need I say more? I think the only saving grace was the crunchiness of their waffle fries, which was unfortunately a whopping $8 for a regular bucket (vs large). I wasn't impressed. There's an upstairs table seating which was nice for kids, teens and k-pop demon hunters to chill.. me? I'm not coming back. Maybe if I'm desperate? Maybe. Twist my arm.
Whenever I have a craving for fries, I usually come to this place and it doesn't disappoint. I've only tried the Cajun and the Chili BBQ flavors on the curly fries but I prefer the Cajun. It has the right amount of spice to salt ratio and it really compliments the curly fries. The chili bbq has a slight sweetness to it that is good, but after a couple of fries, I got tired of the taste. I see that they also have burgers as well in addition to chicken wings. I'll have to give it a try the next time I'm there. Overall good fries
Great spot in downtown San Mateo for a late night snack. They are located on B Street between 2nd and 3rd Ave, across the street from the wine bar and an Indo Chinese restaurant. We went with a large tub of tater tots and waffle fries. Both were freshly fried and served hot and crispy. Didn't realize how big this order was! It was a perfect snack to munch on while sitting on one of the outdoor tables in front. They offer several flavors - cajun style, chili bbq, tomato, cumin bbq, seaweed pepper salt, and sweet corn, if you'd like your fries flavored. We stuck with plain and ketchup. Will definitely be back to try their New Orleans style chicken wings, onion rings, and butterfly shrimp.
The curly fries were solid, crispy, and well-seasoned. I liked that you could choose a half-and-half mix of flavors, which was a fun touch. That said, the flavors did start to blend together after a bit. There's upstairs seating available, but the weather was too nice to pass up, so we grabbed a spot outside in the shared area. Got some boba next door as well. Great vibe overall.
Highly recommend this spot for a snack stop. I love potato snacks. The curly fries were super delicious and i even saw tater tots. They have lots of complimentary flavors. Love this spot. The service is fast and easy and so much room to sit and relax. Will definitely be back!
This place is not bad. Contrary to its name they actually have more stuff than just potatoes! I tried a spicy chicken sandwich combo and I thought it was decent. The flavor of the chicken is not bad and I thought it was fried well. The bun was a little big for the chicken though and I felt like the bun was a bit too buttery for my liking. It was a little messy to eat with the sauce and the lettuce so I ended up using a lot of napkins. The Cajun tater tots were good. They were seasoned nicely and went well with ketchup. The small size was very generously sized!

I like the variety of potatoes and chicken sando options. The seasonings all sound great but my boyfriend and I opted for Cajun and chili bbq. Both were delicious but I would have to say that the chili bbq won our palettes. The fries are perfectly crispy and yet soft in the middle. I would come back to try their other new flavors (garlic parm), and I love that there's an upstairs dining area where I've seen many come to work or chitchat with friends. Great vibe and in a nice part of San Mateo.
Stumbled upon this place while waiting for our dinner to be ready. The concept is similar to Potato Corner but this place was lacking flavor for my partner and I :( FOOD - We ordered the Garlic Parm + Cajun seasoning. In order to get 2 flavors, you have to order the large size. The cajun seasoning was good, but the garlic parm tasted nothing like garlic parm.. it just tasted like extra salt. The fries were cooked to perfection though - nice and crispy. SERVICE - The workers inside were nice and the answered all the questions we had with detail to help us make our decision on what to order. AMBIANCE - The inside was very well kept and clean. I enjoyed that they had seating available upstairs to enjoy our snack. Overall, this place was just ok for us and not a place that we'd go out of our way to visit.

The portions are large so you may want to share with a friend. Tried both the tater tots (cheddar cheese) and the fries (Cajun). The tots had the perfect crunch. The flavor of the Cajun fries was the better of the two. As good as they are, they're just too dry. The only sauce option is ketchup but the fries and tots could be stellar with the addition of sauces instead of flavors that are dry rubs. No issues with service. The atmosphere was ruined a bit by some obnoxiously loud adults but maybe they don't get out much and forgot how to people. Not the Potato Guys' fault. The burgers were meh, best to skip those or get the tots/fries to supplement burgers from elsewhere.
One of my favorite spot for seasoned curry fries! It comes fresh and hot with lots is seasoning. Our go to flavor is chili bbq!
I was craving fries, and happened to run into this place! Ordered tater tots with less Cajun seasoning, and I thought it was 10/10! Crispy outer, piping hot, soft interior, just enough seasoning. A regular size was more than enough for me. Seating upstairs and outside. I think they should monitor the state of the upstairs--absolutely dirty with napkins and trash on the ground and all over the tables, and the TV was playing something I would not want kids to be watching... But their potatoes are great, and would come back for more! Next time, I'll try the curly fries!

OK fries. By no means comparable to Potato Corner, but will get the job done if you're craving some hot fries while roaming downtown SM. There is a second floor, so plenty of seating. This time I tried their chili BBQ and asked for it to be extra seasoned. I wasn't sure if they were actually extra seasoned though, tbh. And while the fries were piping hot and fresh, they fell short on the crispiness. They were just hot and soft? I've also gotten the seaweed flavor before, and I can't quite put my finger on it, but I'm just not too fond of their seasonings for some reason. read more
Cool fries, potato guys. If you haven't guessed, they specialize in fries. They took over C Food Crush, which used to be San Mateo's only cajun boil place. It's a little odd for a french fry place to have a spacious area, as there's an entire seating area upstairs (so great for hangouts). There's also tables outside, but no seating on the first floor. They also do burgers and other fried snacks. Wish they still had soft serve, but it's discontinued. For their made-to-order crispy fries, you pick either regular or large, the style of fries, and then the flavor/seasoning. Just pick whatever you like best; you can do half and half flavors. Cajun is solid, similar to the cajun fries at any seafood boil place. Seaweed pepper salt is exactly like the Calbee seaweed potato chips - subtly sweet and umami. The garlic + parm flavor was a bit too thick and strong on the parm for me. Large is definitely worth sharing, though you can share regular, too, if you're okay with snack portions. They stack the fries high in the cup! Their chicken sandwich tastes like an upgraded McChicken, and their other fried items are just okay. I'd go here exclusively for the fries unless you want to junk out, as the prices are pretty reasonable. Because items are made to order, it will take at least 5 minutes to get your order unless you're the only customer, so don't expect fast food speed. read more

They are all about fries. They were fine; it's ok. The fries were crispy, dusted with flavored powder. Way too heavy (salty) on the garlic parmesan flavor imo. The portions were pretty big. Good for sharing. The burgers/sandwiches were decent. The spicy chicken sandwich was as described- spicy and certainly chicken. It was good overall. Nicely fried. For the price of the food, it feels a bit high for what you're getting. I think I'd rather go to other fast food spots for similar things. read more

Finally was able to check out the hype of this place. We love potatoes and been looking around for a place that offers exactly what potato guys does, which is varieties of diff flavored potato fries!! The place is located in the heart of down town San Mateo with plenty of parking in the area and easy to get to. It is neat and clean, very well maintained. I ordered for pick up to try their spicy chicken sandwich, crispy shrimps and multiple buckets of different flavored potatoes. When I arrived to pick up my order, I was greeted kindly with a warm smile by the staff and my order was already ready. It smelled sooo good! Couldn't wait to get my hands on them and endulge myself to its goodness. As soon as I got the chance to, oh my, it was absolutely delicious! Highly recommend this place. It's the bomb! read more

I was in San Mateo and I wanted a snack so I stumbled upon this place. There are kiosks or you can order at the counter too. I got a large order because you can do half and half different flavors. I got curly fries with half chili BBQ and half seaweed pepper salt and they paired so well together! I like this spot because they don't overdo the seasoning so it's just the right amount and not too salty. The seaweed pepper salt was very unique and made me think of furikake. I will definitely stop by next time I'm in the area.:) Ambiance: There are several tables inside and a restroom for customers too. The worker was nice and asked me which flavor I wanted the top half to be. It's part of the walking street that's blocked out but there are street parking spots nearby. read more

If you love hot, salty carb-loaded snacks, Potato Guys is for you. We ordered and shared a regular size fries with cajun style seasoning. Fries were piping hot, and portion was relatively large. The regular size can be shared easily between two people. Other items on the menu include burgers, chicken sandwiches, and other deep-fried goodness like cheese sticks and onion rings. Circle fries and tator tots were the fan favs. Their portions are pretty big. This fed 5 people. Spacious restaurant with an indoor and outdoor seating. Warm flavorful potato snacks are what they're known for. I strongly recommend the tater tots with chili bbq flavoring. It is a good balance between tangy and spicy and does have a little kick to it. It is on the saltier side so make sure you ask for some water. They also have lots of other snacks including my favorite cheese stick. Their cheese sticks are bigger than the average size cheese sticks! There is some seating upstairs and some seating outside as well. I finally got to try Potato Guys myself after hearing my sister rave about them! I opted for the curly fries with cheese powder - because curly fries are the superior fry and well... I love cheese. It was fun to see staff get the order and then mix the fries in the powders at the counter. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the taste. Curly fries have a distinct taste that make them different from other fries, but for some reason, these curly fries had no taste to them at all? The cheese powder had a great color, but almost NO taste. read more

This place was usually crowded on the weekend. I tator tots with sea salt seasoning it was really good. The wait was long even though they were not many people to dine in. Most people would order through the app cause it's faster. I would definitely return here when in the area. read more

Potato guys is a cute little burger joint located in down town San Mateo . As you walk in, you're given to option to order from a self serve tablet or walk up to the cashier. there are stairs that leads upstairs to the seating area. Seats about 20. There's also chairs outside to sit. Food: the quality of the food was great. chicken was very crispy. The waffle fries were fresh and crispy as well...so was the shrimp. the food was not greasy which I appreciated. Con: The only bad experience here was the bad customer service from the cashier who had TERRIBLE customer service. He didn't greet us upon walking in although I said hello twice. the receipt says "NoRa" but that looks like another persons name. He was very unattentice and stayed on his phone a lot read more

As a fries enthusiast, I stumbled upon this spot while strolling through downtown San Mateo on a Friday night and was immediately drawn in by the variety of fries on offer. Naturally, I couldn't resist giving it a try. When I walked in, I noticed several people already waiting for their orders. The shop itself has a small standing area, but there's additional seating upstairs. The ambiance was decent--well-lit, but not very spacious. We opted for the curly fries with seaweed salt, and they exceeded my expectations. The flavor was perfectly balanced, neither too salty nor overpoweringly seaweed-y. We also tried the cheese bites, which were good but not exceptional. Overall, I'd give this place 4 out of 5 stars. I'll definitely be back to explore more flavors when I'm in the area and craving fries. read more
I got the original fries. I asked the person working which flavors he recommended, he told me most people enjoy the seaweed, Cajun, and chili BBQ I chose a large fry to get 2 flavors, the seaweed and Cajun. It was overall pretty tasty the seaweed tastes like the calbee japanese potato chips and the Cajun was solid. I would recommend it if you want a potato corner dupe but are not near the San Jose area. read more
Yum, I love all things potatoes! My husband and I were excited to see this spot open up downtown. We thought it would be the perfect after movie snack and we stopped by after watching Inside Out 2 at Cinemark recently. Ordering is pretty easy at the tablet and my preferred method when I want limited personal interaction. However, next time I may order with the cashier since I see people say in reviews that's how you can get multiple flavors in your fries order. We got two burgers and large waffle fries to share! Honestly burgers are just OK -- I didn't feel like patties or sauce were particularly flavorful. It would have been nice if the buns were toasted and they used thin red onion slices instead of chunky white onion slices. The fries were a hit though! We got the seaweed flavor and loved it. I'm curious to try the tomato and sweet corn flavors next time. I also want to try things in tot form! Our food took a little while to come out (~15 minutes) but I think that just means they're making things fresh. There's limited seating inside -- they have a couple tables upstairs. They also have a little parklet area outside. I recommend eating outside if the weather is nice. We'll stop by again when we want a fry snack! read more

I was excited to hear that a flavored fries place was opening in the Peninsula, and I went to go check it out with my friends. There aren't too many people, so they're able to accommodate to you quickly. There are about 6 flavors to choose from, but the Tomato flavor stood out to us the most. We ordered a Large Original Fries with Tomato seasoning, and it came out in a little less than 10 minutes. There's seating upstairs with a couple of tables, so we decided to consume our fries there. They were warm and crispy, and the Tomato flavor was great. It reminded us of the Piknik chips that can be found at Asian grocery stores. The interior is very modern, and has nice wall decal that is very welcoming. When I went the second time, my fries weren't as fresh and got a bit soggy right away. I also requested for my fries to be half Tomato and half Sweet Corn, but I guess they misunderstood because they seasoned it with Tomato and then just added the Sweet Corn on top of it. So I didn't really get to taste the difference between the two. I hope their quality becomes a little more consistent in the future, since they just opened, but I'll still come back for the Tomato flavored fries read more

Okay, you guys don't understand how disappointed I am. I am a Potato Corner girl all the way, so maybe this is why I wasn't feeling this spot, but I came in with bright eyes and high hopes! The selection of fry types were good (regular, tots, curly, sweet potato) but the flavors left a lot to be desired. They have a self order station but you can't split flavors on a large, so if you want to split flavors, place the order at the register. For my large, I got half cajun and chili bbq, and a regular order of seaweed salt curly fries. They were advertising some spicy nuggs at the register so I added on an order of that too. It comes with some type of sauce, but it was ok. The nuggs themselves were good, kinda closer to a breadier popcorn chicken than nugget but super crispy and juicy with a little heat. I approve! Our fries were fresh but the flavors were all meh. Maybe that's my bad cause the dude working did say tomato was one of the best flavors but tbh I just didn't want tomato fries lol The seaweed salt on the curly fries were extra salty. Do not recommend a salty flavor on curly fries as those are usually pre seasoned as is. They messed up and gave us seaweed salt on the reg fries too, so that was better. I could see it being decent if you love seaweed flavored things, but I don't. Plus it had a sweet after taste that was just bleh. The chili bbq had some heat but also way too sweet and not cohesive. The cajun was decent.. but nothing spectacular or original about it. I was raving about wanting to try this place and I'm so sad it missed the mark the way it did. There are way too many yummy spots in San Mateo to come back to this one for a redo. FYI they do have outdoor table seating, and also seating upstairs, inside. It's a cute spot to hang out. read more
Oh God I found this place last week when I was visiting and I lived in downtown San Mateo and came here three times in a week. I tried waffle, curly, and tator tots- I think my favorite of those three was waffle! And I liked the spicy sauce. And I really like the cumin BBQ flavor. The fries are hot and crispy and tasty and the workers are really nice! It's a really good thing I was only visiting, because I think I would come way too often otherwise. read more

Potato guys opened up in downtown San Mateo and I was excited to finally try this place! They are still in there soft opening phase so expect a bit of a wait. My friend and I got a spicy chicken sandwich with large fries and upgraded to curly fries and a mango slushy! For the flavor of the fries, we opted for chili bbq as it seemed like a favorite as the cashier described to someone it's sweet and spicy. The food came out pretty quick and I'm taking away a star is because the fries weren't "fresh" to order. They were premade and kept in a heated area so once the fries run out, they would deep fry more. I will say they loaded up the seasoning because it was spicy... I personally think there was too much seasoning. The fried chicken was hot and fresh but it wasn't spicy. The chicken could've been more juicy as well since they might've used chicken breast for their chicken sandwiches. The mango slushy was your typical slushy you can get! It was super sweet so it's not something I would get again. I definitely want to try other seasoning flavors as I saw there was a seaweed sea salt one. Definitely check them out as there's some seating upstairs for you to hang out late night and get a yummy snack! read more

Potato Guys essentially looks like Potato Corner but with additional options like chicken sandwiches, burgers, and ice cream! I've gotten a Hokkaido cream ice cream and fries with both seaweed and sweet corn seasoning. While I'd pass on the ice cream because of the ice crystals in it, I'd definitely get the fries again. The seaweed seasoning tasted like the seasoning that comes with Prince ramen snacks! And sweet corn was interestingly tasty. Fries took a bit long to make because they seem to do small batches (maybe for quality control?), but that made them come out fresh and crispy. I'd definitely come here for a nice snack again, and maybe even try out a sandwich! read more

Fries here's are bomb. They have different seasonings you can choose from. Staff are friendly, asked what their popular flavors were and decided to try that. It was really good. Wish they didn't use the paper in your bucket since the paper funnel wastes space for the fries that could've been on your bucket. You'll get what I mean when you order. But overall worth a try to get before or after the movies. read more
