My husband and I just landed from SFO after a short trip from LAX. We are from here and had our car so we both craved smth simple but salty so fries came to mind. We boycotted McDonald's and most other chains so we needed to find something nearby and worth it. BLESSS THIS PLACE! The space is so cute and clean. It's a great basic hang out spot that I image high schoolers and college kids would love. The service was good. The girl at the register helped me decide on the flavoring and was patient with me. The man (I think owner but idk) was really sweet to the customers I saw him help. The wait is a bit on the longer side (not at all the speed of getting fast food fries) BUT I don't think the wait is unreasonable especially bc it's SO fresh and delicious. Plus if you are sitting in, it's a normal wait time for ordering, chatting a bit with your friends, then grabbing the order to eat it. Lastly, I wasn't a fan of the Cajun or the seaweed flavoring (haven't tried the other flavors and probably won't as I don't like bbq but I would maybe try sweet corn). I really wish they offered a SALT flavor or salt on the side with the ketchup. That said my husband and I agreed we would 10000% come back and get waffle fries without any flavoring bc they are just that good. The crunchy outside and soft inside is MASTERED. The original fries were also pretty decent but we are waffle fries fans. All in all, if you like fries, come here. If you are picky af about fries (like me) come here. Glad I finally decided to try it. Ordered curly fries with the cumin bbq seasoning. It took a while for my order to be ready, but that's because the worker was working relentlessly to season my fries to perfection. The seasoning smelled so good. And the fries weren't even oily. Perhaps it's air-fried? Either way I couldn't stop eating it even though I was full from a ramen dinner. The seasoning was savory and sweet. I do wish it was spicier. I find myself craving these fries everyday now. I hear you can get half and half seasoning if you order straight at the register rather than the self kiosk. Crispy potatoes and good taste, but the prices are a little high for what you get. Been here a couple times and the potatoes come out relatively fast -- way faster than me and the air fryer. Service is friendly and helpful. Handful of flavor options to choose from and it's nice to have a savory snack option in the area. We usually come here after a meal in lieu of dessert. The seating area is small, but I haven't seen it completely full at least during weekday lunch hours. Bathroom is clean. Feels nostalgic and the curly fries remind me of school cafeteria food, but these are way better. read more

been here about 5 times now, this time it wasn't as pleasant. The fries were good as usual, warm and seasoned. The chicken wings were horrible, stomach felt terrible the entire day after having it. They were marinated in a sweet sauce (?), it was sweet and a bit slimy like , not slimy but too wet in comparison to other places for fried wings. The batter was thin and crispy. The season on the wings were barely there since they didn't well season it, it was all over the bottom of the cup only not on the wings. read more

Okay fries, relatively fast service. Price was good! Food (6/10) - The fries were crispy and overall pretty delicious. The reason why the score is low is because the main allure of this place is for their unique fry flavor. It is a bit unfortunate since the foundation of the french fries is there. The flavored powders that they add just isn't strong enough. You can't taste the flavors advertised (we got cajun and seaweed salt). Not being able to taste the primary reason of purchasing these fries significantly reduces their overall score. Service (7/10) - Service was a bit inefficient but MASSIVE props to the guy holding it down at the front. He's running around, shaking and bagging every single order (VERY impressive). Overall, I don't think that there are better but I think it's still a nice stop if you're in the area and craving some french fries! read more

I live about a 14-minute walk from Potato Guys and I don't think it gets enough love. Their spicy chicken sandwich and burger are my go-to's. The chicken is super tender, the breading isn't too thick, and the sauce is a perfect spciy, creamy blend. The burger had me plesantly surprised! Really nice flavor and classic burger toppings. Even though the name has potato in it, we've had just about every type of fry there and they're OK. Nothing to write home about. Now there are some misses here. The new orleans style wings were pretty bad. The sauce was overpowering and the chicken itself had an unpleasant texture. We didn't care much for the chicken nuggets. They were edible, but the spicy chicken sandwich is so much better that we're not going to bother with the nuggets in the future. read more

My husband and I love Potato Corner after trying it in the Philippines so when we saw Potato Guys, we decided to try it. This place is more of an order to go type of place. Nothing special on the inside and it is very quiet. They have a variety of flavor selections that seems to cater to Asian taste like corn, ketchup, and etc, which totally makes sense since it is in San Mateo. The service is slow! Barely any customers and it still takes more than double the time compared to everywhere else that sells fries. We tried the ketchup one and it is surprisingly very good. Tastes like Canada Lay's ketchup chips. Too bad they do not have garlic parmesan or truffled fries since those are our favorite favors. We got the cajun and seaweed fries! Honey very solid fries, nice and crispy, tasted very fresh and not soggy. There was a lot of seasoning and each fry was covered with it very nicely. Personally I liked the seaweed more, but my friends preferred the cajun. You can rlly taste the flavor in each bite! The staff was very friendly and gave us recommendations when asked and the inside is very clean. There's some seating upstairs, but there's also a lot of tables outside with plenty of seating! This place is so cute! It has a nice seating area that's located upstairs. They have a self ordering kiosk that makes it quick & easy to order from. They serve other foods such as burgers and chicken nuggets but we mainly wanted to give the fries a fry. We tried the curly fries with cajun seasoning. They came out super crispy but not all the fries were "curly" they were like the little bits/broken. I opted for the chili bbq because it was described as spicy and sweet, and flavor was actually really good, but definitely was not ready for how spicy it was gonna be! My bf with a spice tolerance of hot Cheetos was lowkey dying LOL so fair warning! Visited for the second time. Front of house was friendly and quick as always (always sweet!!), but I noticed some inconsistency compared to my first visit. I ordered the chili BBQ fries and nuggets with chili BBQ fries, but this time the fries were much spicier and the seasoning overpowered the BBQ flavor. The concept is similar to Potato Corner where you select the type of fries you want and what flavor. They offer six different flavors: cumin bbq, chili bbq, cajun, sweet corn, tomato and seaweed pepper salt. If you get a large size, you can get two different flavors. I got their curly and straight fries flavored with cajun and chili bbq. The lady helping us out wasn't lying when she said yu can taste the difference with their flavors compared to Potato Corner. Their chili bbq is a lot spicier, but it's still pretty good. They also have beef burgers and chicken sandwiches here. There is seating upstairs so you can chill and enjoy your food instead of just taking it togo. I'd definitely come back to try the other flavors. read more

It was my first time trying Potato Guys and I have to say this is very very good. The store is located in downtown San Mateo, is open late until 10pm and has an abundance of seating in their loft area as well as outside. The staff was very kind in helping us decide on which flavors to try since it was out first time and we ended up with the following order (They also have burger and drinks as well but I did not end up ordering these items) We ordered the waffle cut fries with the Cajun style seasoning (the waffle fries were $1 extra) as well as the original fries with the seaweed pepper salt As for pricing, the regular is $7.25 and the Large size is $8.25. For curly fries it is $0.75 extra and for Waffle fries its $1 extra The order came out in about 5 minutes and I could see that they were cooked to order meaning the fries were very fresh and hot and then mixed with the seasoning powder after. The portion size was surprisingly very large and they also have ketchup on the side for self-service. The flavor of the Cajun style was very nice, and not too spicy but had all the Cajun garlic and pepper flavor you would look for. The Seaweed pepper salt flavor had a sweet flavor, similar to the seaweed flavored lays if you've ever tried it. I would definitely return again to try our their other flavors read more

I really wanted to love this place but, it's definitely a 3 star place. Cute spot with nice outdoor seating (which is great!) there is also a place to eat upstairs. Overall the food here was mid. Spicy chicken sandwich was large and juicy but wasn't spicy IMO. Curly fries were fine but not amazing. I got the Cajun seasons again expecting for some spicy but it just wasn't spicy. Husband ordered the burger and he said it was "fine". Ordered from one of the two kiosks right inside the front door. And in hindside I probably should've ordered out the counter because I couldn't figure out a way to order the drink I wanted (orange soda float) as part of a combo. So I ended up ordering it a la cart along with my sandwich and fries. Probably user error? Anyways: a burger, a chicken sandwich, and two orders of curly fries +2 drinks came out to $55. Which is felt was a lot of $$. Anywayyy all that to say I will probably be back to try their tots but prob won't order a sandwich or burger again. I would say the tomato had the most flavor out of the three. The corn flavor was a hit with my family. Of course you can choose between the regular size or the large size for only $1.75 more. I figured go big or go home. They also have items like burgers and appetizers like chicken wings, chicken nuggets, cheese sticks, onion rings and more. Now, for the soft serve, I liked the Hokkaido milk a bit more over the chocolate and it was because its texture was creamier. Both flavors are perfect for a hot day in downtown San Mateo.
