Arrived in Davis late, first visit so we really didn't know where to eat. I got Aloo Gobi and it was good but for the price, surprised and disappointed by how small the serving was. The rice was weird- clumpy, more like regular white rice not basmati. My son got something Paneer he said was good. For both of us with an order of naan the bill was $30. Not worth a return visit in my opinion. Note they are charging for leftover containers so maybe think about bringing your own from home but since they're not giving you much food you probably won't need a container. Nope. If you appreciate and respect yourself, please do not dine here. The Chicken tikka masala (a dish usually made with a base of tomato puree, gravy, and cream) was pre cooked and just heated. You can tell by the oil thats leaving the chicken in the dish. To "revive" the dish, butter was used and then salt/pepper, and maybe some red pepper. The naan was undercooked in certain areas. Not to mention that we ordered garlic and just got butter. The only thing to look forward to was the dosa my partner got. Save your time and money. Service was okay. I don't know about you, but I often get these intense cravings for Indian food to the point where I think of naan and curry more than my girlfriend. Fortunately, I found Preethi to sufficiently calm these cravings and I end up coming here every weekend for their lunch buffet. While they do not serve chicken tikka masala/butter chicken, their chicken makhani is to die for!! It's almost like butter chicken without the sweetness and cooked with tandoori chicken and is sooooo good! This is the one dish you must try if you come. Everything else is quite yummy and packed with flavor and spice (yes the owner is South Indian). Some other dishes they typically have are biryanis, daal, saag/paneer palak, goat curry and rice pudding. Their South Indian chicken curry is amazing as well. They provide freshly baked Naan so don't get the Naan from the self serve as it tends to be old and flat. Preethi also serves some of the cheapest tap beer in Davis so keep that in mind as well. For something around $13 for a lunch buffet, preethi is a steal and perfect for satisfying ur cravings. As I mentioned earlier, I used to come here religiously, however, recently I feel like their food cleanliness standards have gone down quite a but. I realize that it's difficult to maintain cleanliness in a buffet but after suffering from consistent bloating and abdominal discomfort after each meal here, I have since decided to go on hiatus with preethi. I'm no expert on Indian food by any means, but since Preethi seemed to have best combination of Yelp ratings and number of reviews for Indian in Davis, we decided to have dinner there. It was still winter break and on a Saturday, they were not busy. We were greeted and advised to sit anywhere in the dining room. There were only 2 other tables taken so we accommodated ourselves right in middle. There is also an adjacent room where the kitchen and the bar is, which I assume gets pretty busy during the buffet hours but this time hosted only the waitress. Preethi has a pretty warm appearance to it, simple but clean and their menu is very extensive and includes a lot of meatless options. For my entree I had a Chicken Tikka from tandoor. The cubed meat was a little dry and some of the chicken was very chewy... It comes with rice or naan on the side; I went with rice which was pretty standard white rice. One thing Preethi could improve is surely the presentation. If you order a la carte, like I did, the rice comes by itself on the plate and looks preethi sad. On the other hand if you order an entree thali, everything comes on the steel tray, and even the bowls are stainless too. I understand that it's more durable and easier to clean steel, but my wife made a comment that it reminds her of a plate they'd use in correctional institutions. On the more positive side, the samosas and naan were really good and 3 sauces they served us were all delicious. Just be careful with the hot red one, it has great flavor to it but also carries a sting. They have about 6 beers on draft and at $4 a pint, this is one of the best deals in Davis outside of the happy hour. The selection is not fabulous, but Sudwerk Dry Hopped Lager or Racer 5 handles do the job. For the final verdict I'd rate Preethi somewhere in between 3 and 4 stars. However since they offer Yelp Check in offer (50% off on second entree), I will round it over to 4 stars with the caveat to be back another day to try the buffet and put the half star conundrum to rest.... read more

Preethi is the best restaurant in Davis. The food is unbelievably good! I highly recommend the masala dosa (go with the South Indian Veggie Special Combo!) and the Chicken Tikka (in the menu's Tandoori section). But honestly, having been a loyal customer for over 5 years, I've sampled the entire menu and can say that everything is delicious and cooked to perfection. But just as important as the wonderful food, Preethi is owned and operated by an amazing family. I cannot say enough about their kindness and generosity. As the son of immigrants, I am so proud to see their success! Their son is a brilliant little fellow and their daughter, who worked every evening in the restaurant, is going to medical school! This buffet is great, but I think they recently raised their prices? It was a very confusing process. I asked if there is a discount for uc Davis students and then she said yes, 10.84 each... So, then we asked how much it normally is and she said $9 + tax. Where's the discount then...? Being more confused than before, we continued to inquiry until she said just pay 10 dollars each in cash. Still a good deal regardless! Food is delicious, and there's a huge variety of options to choose from; however, I will have to agree with some of the other reviews about how the place could be a bit more sanitary. A lot of the dishes looked like they have been sitting there for a long time without being touched--especially the desserts. While Raja's definitely beats this place pricewise, the food selection here really takes the cake. There are at least triple the amount of curries here ranging from vegetarian, goat, and a lot of chicken ones. The chai tea they offer is also very interesting! Like spicy hot chocolate...minus chocolate. The foot traffic here is much less heavy than Raja's, so if you're looking for somewhere a bit more quiet this is the place for you. I've come here a handful of times for lunch buffet and once for dinner. Its one of the best places to get indian food in Davis! The lunch buffet is more expensive than Raja's, however it is a lot better in taste. I think its around 12 dollars for the buffet but I've heard theres a student discount if you bring your ID. Obviously I have not been taking advantage of that fact... Regardless their curries are great in flavor and their naan is some of the best around. The store is pretty clean and the staff always keeps the buffet pretty filled up. There are plenty of seats. The service is pretty nice as well. If you ask them for recommendations, thats probably the best way to find the best stuff! There are a lot of vegetarian and meat options so its super friendly to those that do not eat meat. You would think that the dishes are not filling but everytime I leave, I'm ridiculously full. Indian is my favorite cuisine and I've eaten a lot of it. Last night we ordered the chicken tikka masala, lamb biryani, and butter naan and had it delivered by uber eats. The tikka masala was okay but I was surprised by the small portion size for $13.99. The rice that came with it had a strange taste to it that I couldn't put my finger on. The portion size of the biryani was good for the price, even if there was only a little bit of lamb, but we were overwhelmed by one or some of the spices in it. We tried this restaurant on a whim this evening and we are SO happy! We got the kofta curry and paneer chapati with gulab jamun for dessert. I'd never had the kofta before and I was completely blown away with the depth of flavor and how amazingly delicious it was with each rich and smooth bite. Instead of acting like a half-decent business and asking me to clarify, the girl on the phone told me to go to hell and hung up on me. I called later and they hung up immediately. I called once again, and another insta-hangup. Later the manager called back, and I told him about the situation -- all he asked was what I wanted to order. When I responded saying I don't want anything, he kept asking me why I'm talking (note that he called me.... so I don't understand why he asked me that). I told him to forget it and not call back, and he threatened to call the cops. 0/5 stars for customer service. EDIT: I had to create a yelp account to make this review. That alone should express my disgust for the restaurant. EDIT EDIT: Seeing that the owner responded to my comment, I am going to respond to the 4 points you made. 1) Firstly, I'm sorry that I asked for Sanjay -- my friend said he knew the owner and told me to ask for him. Seems like he may have mixed up the restaurants. Also, you never mentioned anything about TV's.... If you think otherwise, I ask you to put up some sort of audio recording of the phone call and review/post the footage. 2) I DID NOT call back for Sanjay. I called back to ask for an apology for the rash way your employee treated me. Also I asked about prices in my first phone call... not my second. In particular, I distinctly asked for the price of a naan and curry to which your employee responded 10 dollars starting. No miscommunication on that part. 3) I never asked if the female waitress was going to watch the Warriors game -- now you're just making stuff up. I come here once or twice a week lmao. Not only is it down the street from where I work, but the family who owns the restaurant is ~beyond~ friendly, and I wish they would adopt me so I could come anytime & eat their food for free haha... Their buffet doesn't have a lot of options, but each dish is tasty enough to want to come back for seconds. Or thirds tbh. They have a few vegan/vegetarian options, perfect if you're trying to eat a little healthier. Some days they have more fried veggies, but other days they have more veggie curries. If you like spicy, their goat curry is absolutely ~delicious~, and it's about the only thing right now that's preventing me from going full vegan. Other than their usual 11am-3pm buffet, they have an annual special buffet in the evening to celebrate Diwali. During this time, the food options are even greater both in quantity and quality! This place is awesome! It's one of Davis's hidden gems. No one really knows about it when I mention it to people which is sad because it's really delicious. I always come here on the weekends for brunch . The staff are really nice and always checking up on you. The decor is cute as well. I really wanted to leave a good review because I know how hard it must be for local businesses to stay afloat but I have never been to an Indian food place where I couldn't eat the food. It tasted burnt, way to salty, and like it had been sitting out for hours. I only had a few bites of my plate and couldn't stomach anymore. I was in the restaurant for about 10 minutes but the owner told me that since I had food on my plate I had to pay for it. My partner did his best to be polite and eat some of the food, (he usually throws down at Indian food restaurants), but after getting about 1/4 of the way through his plate he felt like throwing up. During this period of self isolation it is pretty wild walking around and seeing most Davis businesses closed. I'm so grateful that Preethi is still open and serving! My partner and I were tired and order two meals to go today. The server was very kind and thanked us for supporting them during this time. This social distancing is incredibly important for our community's health but I am so glad we are able to patronize this local gem. We order two vegetarian meals Thali style and I swear they really packed our to-go containers, the naan we order was fresh and chewy--just how I like it. I usually order off of their Southern Indian specials, the South Indian Veg Special Combo is seriously out of this world. I could eat their Rava Dosa everyday and still love it as much as I did the first time. The vaguely sourdough flavor filled with the best blend of spices and vegetables exceeds my wildest dreams. Restaurant was pretty packed, but luckily there were few seats open. Preethi does lunch buffets, but for dinner its order style. Service was not too great, since we had to wait 20 minutes until the server came to us. I got the fish curry and my friend got the chicken tikka masala~ You can order a la cart which comes with just the main and rice, or thali style which comes with entree, rice, naan, pudding, yogurt sauce, mango sauce, and two other sauces. ($15 and $17). Even though it's a a bit pricy, I highly recommend getting the Thali. The fish curry was tomato based, light, but full of spices~ loved how they didn't skimp on the fish. I loved dipping the naan and rice in the various sauces~ kind of like a pallete Cleanser. The naan was warm with a nice char, like the naan here more than Rajas for sure. I tried my friend chicken tikka masala, which was a bit too creamy for me, but the flavor was on point~ chicken was nice and tender and sauce was thick. I was pretty stuffed by the end, we still had 6 pieces of naan and I couldn't finish half the curry and most of the sauces. I heard some good things about Preethi, and I was not disappointed. I came here yesterday (sunday) for the buffet. When I walked in there was long table set up for a large party of maybe 20 indian people. They all seemed pleased so Preethi must be doing something right. The buffet has a large variety of food. Half of the dishes are vegetarian and are done well. I was expecting similar dishes that are seen at Raja's and Kathmandu, but I was surprised to find something new! They offer plain Basmati Rice as well as Rice steamed with some meat and spices. The tandoori chicken was done well, not dry like other Indian Restaurants. If you want something other than water, they offer Chai Tea. Some dishes were a little bland or weren't that spicy, but at a buffet, its easier to add seasoning to a dish than to take it away. Initially, me and my friend were disappointed because we did not see any naan anywhere, but after we sat down with our food, we were brought fresh naan from the kitchen. It is definitely better than getting limp pieces that sit under the heat lamps for hours. The waitress also walked around tables with Dosa and asked if we wanted to try some. I am not sure if its a normal service or if it just a promotional thing, but I don't mind either way :)! Dosa is like an Indian Crepe, and inside it had potatoes season with some curry. The dosa had a nice texture, but was a little plain and bitter. I believe it is made with fermented lentils, so it might be from that. Make sure you spread out the potatoes so its in every bite. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Preethi. The staff were nice, the food was different than other Indian Buffets. The price was $10.99 which is a little more than other places, but I would go there again. I am not sure if this is the price for weekend or for everyday. Maybe not as often as the cheaper places, but it is good to mix it up every once and a while. Next time I will try their dinner and see how it fares against everyone else. read more

I was here for the lunch buffet and it was your standard fare: curry items, vegetarian dishes, and iceberg lettuce salad with assorted sauces bar. The buffet steamer was working so the food remained hot for about 15 minutes on my plate. The veggie fitters were not crispy but warm, common in buffets that fry a large amount with an expectation they would be eaten quickly. The spicy veggie curry was tasty but might be too picante for someone not used to "Indian spicy." The chicken curry composed of an edible thick orange colored sauce but the bone-in chicken drumsticks tasted like it was uneaten tandoori chicken from a day ago. The crispy thin flat crackers with seeds had a very bitter flavor....someone should have drizzled melted clarified butter on it. I enjoyed the naan brought out from the kitchen. The mango lassi was very thick and so sweet it tasted artificial. The pastry balls in a sticky brown clear sauce was fresh but the cut fruit was not even replenished that it was not even a dessert option. The tall middle aged Indian gentleman had very kind table side manner, I'm glad I didn't encounter the rude young woman server I read about on this yelp page, I would have reduced this rating to a 2-star. read more
