After a not so great start at another local vet we decided to give Preiser Animal Hospital a try. It has been a good move. The staff is always friendly and helpful. We have a French Bulldog who needed to be snipped plus possibly have some work done on his nares. I wanted everything to be done in one surgery since French Bulldogs don't always do well under anesthesia. Dr. Preiser had the expertise to do both and the results have been good. The location also offers boarding which we have tried. I like that the dogs have their own individual outdoor area in addition to being taken out a couple of times a day for exercise. As Porter is aging, we're spending a bit more time with them and I can't say enough good things about our experience. In particular, Amanda, has been wonderful. Followed Dr. Beloiu to her newest location for one of our dog's annual exam. I called to make an appointment and the process was easy and seamless. I received an email with our pet's information to review and to also check in. When I arrived , the receptionist was so kind . All of the staff were nice and caring. Of course, I am always happy with Dr. Beloiu . She is so calm and reassuring and our dog is immediately put at ease. I called Preiser Animal Hospital on March 31 and asked if the hospital provides euthanasia services for cats. I told the hospital that my cat had nasal cancer and was in the last stage of his life. I was told that since my cat had not been their patient, they would need a note from his current veterinarian and pay a $76 deposit. They made it clear to me that the deposit would be applied to euthanasia cost. I told the hospital specifically that I would bring the note and simply need to have my cat put down. I paid $76 deposit over the phone. My son and I took my cat to the hospital in the late afternoon. A doctor and technician came in and put my cat down. My son paid the final bill without going through item by item (we were very sad about losing our beloved cat at time). I later found out that instead of applying the $76 deposit to the euthanasia, the hospital charged us $76 for Exam-Wellness. My cat was dying and didn't need wellness care. I called the hospital twice and went in-person once and tried to resolve the billing issue. Jamie, the person in charge of billing, never called me back or spoke to me (the front desk always said she was busy and couldn't talk to me). The lack of communication was unprofessional and astonishing for a well-established business. They either lied to us or took advantage of us at our most vulnerable time. It is with a heavy heart and a profound sense of responsibility that we share our devastating experience with Preiser Animal Hospital. We feel compelled to warn fellow pet lovers about their shocking lack of professionalism, compassion, and competence. Preiser is unsafe, unprofessional, and unqualified. Our beloved cat, Boomer, a healthy indoor pet, visited Preiser for a routine rabies vaccine mandated by the Lake County Health Department. What should have been a simple procedure turned into a nightmare due to the staff's incompetence and negligence. Upon Boomer's arrival, we were assured he would receive proper care. Instead, he was needlessly quarantined in deplorable conditions, causing him immense suffering. Despite promises to update us and clarify the situation, the staff's communication was inconsistent and misleading. Angie told us that they needed to quarantine Boomer until they notified the Lake County Health Department that he received his mandated rabies vaccine. Angie said that she would update us after she contacted the Health Department so that we could bring Boomer home. Angie never called us. We then requested to speak with Jamie (supervisor) to get a proper update, but no one ever called us back. Days later, we went to check on Boomer and asked if he had received his vaccine shot. Mandy said that he received his shot on the day we dropped him off. Ten days later, we asked the same question when we picked up Boomer to bring him home, and Angie told us that he received his shot "just now." The staff misrepresented the medical information. The staff never contacted the Health Department as they promised. Their communication was as clear as mud. When we calmly questioned the staff about the conflicting misinformation and asked to discuss the situation with Kristine (owner of Preiser), Kristine refused to discuss and avoided us. Angie then threatened to call the police and did so. We asked for clarification because nothing they told us made sense, and they responded by calling the police! Tragically, Boomer's health deteriorated rapidly during his stay. He lost 4.5 pounds and developed cancerous growths shortly after his return home. Despite consulting multiple professionals, none had ever witnessed such a profound lack of professionalism and care. Preiser's behavior was not only unprofessional but also heartless. Their actions directly contradicted their stated mission of providing comfort and relief to animals. Boomer's unnecessary suffering and untimely death were avoidable and deeply traumatic for our family. We implore you, fellow pet owners, to heed our warning: avoid Preiser Animal Hospital at all costs. The staff's actions are a stark reminder that not all facilities prioritize the wellbeing of your beloved pets. Not like old days Mr/Dr. Herbert Preiser would be appalled. Way downhill since he retired. These are incompetent and lose more pets than save. They have no confidence so order as many useless tests as possible. He would never do that. He would say don't take these tests, X-rays, or vaccines until you decide or know if you need them, just do minimum if any. He knew he could diagnose without them. He guessed age of every animal to the month, proven by later finding DOB. He would casually trim nails while talking, no charge. I can't tell how many free & very low cost spay/neuters he did as he was committed to it and his dream was to turn lower level into free clinic for it. Was told by others they cost about nothing, take 2 to 5 mins $3 to $5 to do. That's why shelters kill so many, no one can afford now. The new owners are all about money & how much time they can stay away from the place for sports & other "more important" interests. They got rid of the 2 best techs who Dr P. said were as good as him just needed degree. They did things like full dental no anesthesia thought waste of money. I couldn't trust an animal there again, they lost 2 through no attention to details given. They say take them back home hoping they don't die on their watch. One I pulled to another vet & was saved from advice to euthanize. They only want easy things they can upcharge to make same profit. My other, very similar vet died of COVID, so there's a great need for more like them. They are only found in small towns further away. RIP read more

Just brought my cat home after teeth cleaning and tooth extraction. Dr. Beloiu was fantastic as was all the staff. Her assistant was so sweet and caring, I felt completely at ease leaving my sweet boy there. I've been coming here for over 30 years. Updating as its been a couple more years, two sr dogs of mine are no longer with me, added a newly adopted rescue shepherd from Alabama with hip issues and still feel like I am in the most capable hands of pet care in the Chicago area. They are compassionate, caring (who calls on a weekend to see if a sick dogs temperature has gone down???), and exceptional. Dr P and her staff are nothing short of awesome. Tests and costs are discussed thoughtfully, and they handle us crazy pet owners with respect and concern. Here my dog/s get the best treatment at reasonable pricing. Dr. Silvana Beloiu took excellent care of my cat, she was exceptional in handling my cat's medical and surgical issues,

I used to work as a receptionist for a dog daycare, so I've had to talk to different vets all the time all over Chicago. Now, no longer a receptionist and I have my own puppy; Preiser was one of my top 3 to go to. I HIGHLY recommend, they have a wonderful staff and receptionists. The nurses are so kind, and treated my puppy with so much love. Like, I'm pretty sure my dog loves the vet now. They helped refer me to a specialist and helped me make sure she got the best care. Pricing wasn't terrible at all. The doctor called me personally to discuss my dog which I thought was really thoughtful. Also the lobby is so cute, and welcoming. Sometimes lobbies at vets can be rough, like they can smell, be dirty, have strange colors, and have uncomfortable chairs... but not here. It's so cute and cozy, the sun shines in, there are magazines, comfy sheets, and so much space if you have an uneasy or aggressive pet that needs space from other pets. I have 30 years of experience using this vet for cats and dogs. Here are my comments about Dr. Preiser and her staff. Very talented, Dr. Preiser is a second generation vet. She has good intuition and always explains options. If a procedure is pricey she tells me and helps me with explaining the pros and cons. I have never felt pressured into doing anything. When my cat was severely ill she would check in on him and sometimes even answer a message sent to her on a weekend or after hours. When it seemed like my cat needed attention immediately, I was able to bring him in. Once my cat was diagnosed with end stage kidney disease Dr. Preiser said I could take him home and when he showed certain symptoms I should bring him in to be euthanized. I had him for 3 more days and cherish them dearly. I don't feel pressured into buying heartworm and flea/tick medications from them and was once told that they'd have no problem giving me a prescription to get them online. I've always just bought them there, and there is often some kind of rebate the company has to reduce the cost. I have never had anything but a positive experience with Dr. Preiser. There have been a couple of other vets there that I wasn't thrilled about but that is over a span of 30 years and they weren't there for long. The only thing that disappoints me about the practice is that they no longer have walk-ins. My understanding is that the flow of patients was too irregular and during popular hours caused some wait times to be very long. I can see their point, and it's valid, but I loved being able to take my animals in the same day I wanted them to be seen. That said, if they believe it is an *emergency* situation I know they will see the pet right away if you call and explain the situation. read more

Took our cat for a check up on a Saturday. Appointment was required. Drive up service due to COVID . Once we got to parking lot we called to have our cat brought up inside by one of the members of their staff. Once our cat was inside we waited for call from vet.l as we waited outside. Worked out pretty well. Very friendly staff . Vet answered all of our concerns and was patient and professorial. Prices are still reasonable. I just have to write another review. My dog is 1 years old. For all of our routine visits we've been seeing Dr. Gill who is amazing. I can't say enough good things about him. The last 2 time I had to bring my dog in, Dr. Gill was not there. We saw Dr. Preiser and guys I gotta tell you, She is something else !!! I came in because I thought my dog had pink eye. Being a first time dog owner I tend to over react and freak out over every little thing. She introduced herself to me and took wonderful care of my pup. Here's the best part... 2 days later she called me to follow up on Bandit and to see if the eye drops were working. She spent about 20 mins on the phone with me as I had some other questions for her. Dr. Kristine Preiser is a great vet who genuinely cares about her patients. My dog has had ongoing skin issues and Dr. Preiser follows up by email regularly to check in on how she's doing. She is thoughtful regarding the cost of tests and treatment and tries to keep costs down. The staff are friendly and helpful. I recently had to take my dog to a veterinary dermatologist and the dermatologist was impressed with how thorough Dr. Preiser has been in testing and treating my dog for a very difficult issue to treat. We continue to be blown away by the service from everyone at Preiser. Our dog has really bad allergies and had a bad flare up this week. I called and they said their next opening was Friday, but asked what was going on with our pup. I told them and she didn't even hesitate to squeeze us in the next day. They are keeping pet parents in the car during the covid pandemic, and their whole process is very seamless. Dr. Barry called and talked with us after she saw our dog. She explained in great detail what was going on. We've been so worried about his health and she put us at ease telling us exactly what was going on without us even having to ask. Have been taking my puppy here, since our first visit. Very disappointed in the care and lack of responsiveness. Several months ago, brought our puppy in after he swallowed something and had severe diarrhea and vomiting, but we were sent home and ended up in the ER. Most recently, our puppy woke up extremely lethargic and not eating. I called first thing Monday morning and could not get an appointment until Thursday morning. My dad literally had to talk the vet into running more tests on her because they were going to send her home saying she was fine that morning. The Friday before I was told she was fine and just having allergies. It wasn't until nearly 5:30 pm that they ran more tests. At which point the vet called and told us it was Addisons but that she may not make it through the night because her body was shutting down as per the blood work of the second test we requested. Then the next morning I get a call from a technician that Jules was ready to be picked up and was fine. She was not fine. She still was on an IV and still not eating or using the bathroom and the vet himself had said her body was shutting down. I'm glad Paws has a policy of taking dogs back unconditionally and took her since the other shelters would not take her in her condition. This is the second time I have sent you this below email. I'm glad you responded this time within 24 hours. Last time you did not respond at all and I still got another reminder. This is why in addition to sending the same email again I also let other potential families know about what happened since it seemed you had no interest in resolving the issue the first time when I did not go to Yelp. Jules has since been put down. I hope you understand that you are not just treating the dog/pet at the vet, but the entire family and that your office needs to work as a team and all be on the same page in your communications with families. And yes while this is quite emotional for me and my family. That is not why I am contacting you for a second and now 3rd time following a survey I also filled out after the visit as well. I hope you are able to read this email and work as a team within your office to adjust your approach towards families of sick animals and your communication efforts towards these families in the future. Amazing place! Had a grim outlook for our kitten that swallowed something he shouldnt have. Took him here after a bad experience from a different vet. Prieser's staff was so helpful. The techs came out and spent time petting him while we were waiting for the doctor. They explained the financials and surgery process with us.They are definitely there to care for yor pet and Not about how much money they can make. They worked on him right away! My mom and I were so distraught and they gave us hope. He is now home, happy and healing. The staff was great! read more

Prieser's staff always provide quality veterinary care. We've used them for almost 20 years for a variety of pets. They have really made visits for our pets as easy as could be during this time of crisis. This review is written from a different perspective as most of this clinic's reviews. I have only used Preiser for a few of my pets who have passed since they have a private crematorium and one can be assured that they will receive their own pet's ashes back. (Preiser isn't my regular vet only because there are many who are closer to where I live.) We brought our dog in, who had died at home unexpectedly the evening before, for cremation. In less than 24 hours we were notified that we could come and pick up his ashes. But quite unexpectedly, about a week later I received a sympathy card from them. Several on their staff had written words of comfort on the card, which also included some wildflower seeds implanted in a heart-shaped piece of recycled and biodegradable paper to plant and enjoy the blooms that will remind me of my wonderful dog. I thought this was so thoughtful and kind. I still have yet to receive anything similar from my dog's very own vet or clinic (which starts with an R and is on Touhy and Central in Skokie). Compassion is so appreciated at times such as this. Preiser got it right and I am grateful for their thoughtfulness. read more

1 star is too many. We had been going to Preiser for over 20 years. When Herb ran it, there was no place better to take your pet. Unfortunately he retired and his daughter took over and it was all downhill from there. Our first red flag should have been when our cat was migdiagnosed with diabetes. We purchased all the insulin and supplies and were taught how to administer the medicine to the cat. When we took the cat in for a follow up blood test, another vet looked at the blood work and said the cat was fine and not diabetic. A few monthls later our dog broke his leg. We took him to Preiser and we were given 2 scenerios, #1, they could reset it and cast it and it will heal on its own and that would cost about $900 or if they had to surgerically put in pins, it would be $1,400. We agreed to them fixing the leg. Of course it ended up needing the pins. What we were not told is that follow up would be a long costly proceedure with weekly visits for recasting. When all was said and done with all the recasting, constant xrays and an unexpected infection at the point of surgery, the leg cost us $4,000. That would be fine since the dog was still young and we really wanted to save it, but the way the surgery was done damaged the dogs ACL and now he cannot bend his knee. After all was done, we took the xrays to another vet and was told that the surgery was unnecessary and that leg would have healed with a simple cast. The total time for the leg to be casted was 8 weeks. As time went by, and we started asking questions about the dogs care, Doc Preiser seemed like she was avoiding us more and more. Toward the end, she never would look up at us or address our messages. Its been over a year since the leg has healed and he still cannot bend his paw and were told by another vet that he will always be like this. read more

I first went to Preiser two years ago, after I adopted my dog from Heartland Animal Shelter next door. The 1st visit was because they offered a free exam with the adoption. I live about 6 miles from the office (and had been going to another vet close to our home), but I kept returning because of the wonderful staff. The vets are professional and knowledgeable, as well as caring and compassionate. In the past two years, they have seen a lot of us, as we had four pets. They took great care of my older dog through two surgeries. They also provided excellent care and support through a difficult time very recently, when our elderly cat had to be euthanized. I definitely felt the concern of everyone at Preiser - for my cat as well as for my family. I can't recommend this practice highly enough - from the lovely folks who greet you when you enter, to the vet techs and vets who treat your animals - you'll know you're in good hands. And one other great point - no appointments needed! Despite this, I have never had to wait too long in the waiting room. I love it! read more

Sorry to say I was treated very rudely by staff here. Not the docs, but one of the assistants. Beyond rude. Shocking, jaw-dropping in-your face rude. I can't believe that the rest of the staff doesn't know about this, as she was also rude to someone she was talking to on the phone while I was in the waiting area, so it would be hard to believe it is an infrequent occurrence. Given that assumption, the tolerance of that behavior becomes a reflection on the business itself, and that inference is not a good one. I called the same afternoon to have my dog's records transferred. I will never go back and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. read more

Great care, great doctors, great PRICES, but you have to be comfortable with waiting. It seems they only have a couple exam rooms and it can get quite busy there (wait time almost 1 and 1/2 hours). Also sometimes their exam rooms have many hair tuffs rolling around and I don't like placing my cat on the floor. I hate taking my cat there because I always seem to go at a busy time and I'm stuck waiting in the waiting room forever. And I am usually a very patient person! The problem is there will be rowdy dogs barking and stressing out my cat. If it were quiet, or the barking weren't nonstop, it would be fine. And I know that I can't hold the clinic accountable for other people's animals, but if there were more exam rooms, there would at least be a place to put the barking animals. This is one of the primary reasons I switched clinics. But like I said at the beginning of the review, there are wonderful things about the clinic, as long as you are willing to wait. read more

Dr. Preiser and all the staff were so lovely, knowledgeable and patient during my pup's first visit. The clinic was obviously very busy, but I never felt rushed or dismissed by any of the staff. These people love animals, but are good with humans, too! I emphasize this because, as a new dog owner, the first practice to which I took my pup was cold, rushed, unfeeling and even made me think I was a high maintenance client or too anxious about my pup. Not the case with Preiser! Besides being super friendly, Dr. Preiser and her staff also explained things very clearly and thoughtfully, too. So impressed. I adopted a cat from Heartland Animal Shelter, which is right next door. You get a free coupon for a wellness exam at the Animal Hospital. The coupon is only good for two weeks so you have to do it relatively soon. I took my cat in on a Saturday morning around 10:00. They only take walk-in appointments on the weekend, which is somewhat of a bummer. In my opinion, it'd be better if they had set times so it was more organized. Another woman who was waiting got to go in before me since she called ahead of time and the staff told her she could bring her dogs in to get some medication without having to wait. That's fine by me, but the woman was getting upset since she wasn't seen the second she walked in the door. Sheesh. Have patience, lady. My cat's visit went well and the vets were very helpful answering my questions, providing me with tips to deal with some of my cat's issues and giving me some tips with regard to what to feed her and how much to give her. The only issue that I had basically arose after I received a follow up call from a Heartland volunteer regarding my cat. We got into a discussion about how the vet recommended that I wean her off the wet food and stick to dry food. The Heartland volunteer said that wet is better since dry can contain carbohydrates, which can make cats pack on the pounds. So, I don't know who is right and who is wrong. I'm still going to feed my cat both wet and dry, but limit her dry intake or switch to a premium brand to see if that will help with her weight.
