As we followed Big Bug Creek and made our way deeper into the forest, both Phyliss and Janice shared an incredible wealth of knowledge. We learned about the region's gold mining past, Native American history, early settlers, and even the geology, plant life, and wildlife that make this part of Arizona so unique. What is also really nice is since this trail is near most of the ranches and farm land, there are ranchers and farmers who take their horses through here to help get them air and train them as well as practice with them too. What I really like about this trail is how there are parts that seem to show the remains of maybe where ranches maybe used to be. The fences and the feeding trays for livestock are still here and it's nice to see. And then there is the distance as well as time it could take to complete certain trails too. So be careful you don't get lost or miss the exit and end up looping around in circles. I would still check out this trail but watch your step as the horses may leave feces on the trail.

We were off to a bit of a chaotic start but we got moving along. There were smaller children- 7…read moreyear old triplets- that led the group so we had to take it slow. I think we were a mixed group of about 18 guests. All of our tour guides were professional, knowledgeable, fun, and lighthearted people. They made absolutely sure we were all safe and having a great time. If you don't want to wait on other people and prefer a smaller group, get the private tour. There wasn't much shade but we were dressed for the heat and had plenty of water and our guides made sure we stayed hydrated. Each horse has a saddle bag for water and small personal items. Jalynn (I think that was her name) did an excellent job rounding up the group and taking charge. She knew what she was doing and how to handle her horse. Chaz and Marina were also our guides and they did a great job of us staying in line. Friendly and personable. I rode Cody and my husband rode Blue. They provided water and Gatorade. There is only one outhouse. They have Clorox wipes, toilet paper and a hand washing station with soap. (And paper towels. ) The lady at our bed and breakfast recommended this place. I hadn't seen it online and they had same day availability. We were on the 2pm tour so if you don't want to be so hot, go in the morning. Lots of dust so be prepared.

My daughter had never been on a horse…read moreand they gave her no direction and when the dang horse started "grazing" in the trees and trying to brush her off by taking her through the trees, the guide said not to touch the reins or try to maneuver the horse out of the brush/trees and she would just "follow the herd" which was a bit ridiculous. She had no control over the horse, and was told not to try to gain any kind of control over her. She was told not to touch the reins, which was stupid he said she would be fine as long as the trail ride kept moving but then would stop to talk to everyone, and this horse would go off trail through the trees again and he would yell at her telling her not to touch the horses reins. He also told my mother in law that she had to kick her horse harder to make him go faster, but the horse was either lame or had an injury on his hoof and couldn't go faster probably because he was in pain. We hadn't noticed this until reviewing pictures I took while on the ride his hoof was bandaged up maybe from an abscess. My mother in law said I have been kicking him he isn't going any faster, and the guide said "you're meaning to tell me you have been on that horse for 30 minutes and know him better than me, and I've been around him for 3 years?! I guess we all learn something everyday don't we?! Ha!" It was a nice ride overall, just wished they gave some more instruction to first time, younger riders about how to ride a horse and not just sit on one. I used to barrel race and not having control of your horse and being told not holding the reins of a horse is just a dumb and dangerous idea honestly. They literally just put my daughter on a horse and didn't give any instruction. In hindsight this was my fault for putting her in that situation but it luckily went ok, and I'm glad she wore a long sleeve shirt and I tried to instruct her and she was able to back the horse up out of a tree, towards the end of the ride because I had to tell her not to listen to him grab the reins and pull that horse back! Great ride if you are an experienced rider, but I would advise against this for a newer or nervous rider.

There several trails from this parking lot located a couple miles west of the Thumb Butte…read moreRecreation area. We did a loop of the 318, 332 and 325 trails. Portions of this hike were in valleys near drainage areas, some with paths wide enough for ATVs, though I am not sure if they are allowed. You cross through Willow Creek about a third of the way in and in February it was flowing with a small stream and was quite peaceful and lush. There are views towards Thumb Butte from the 318. Overall the is a nice, relatively easy workout close to town. The trails can be busy with cyclists and hikers, no doubt due to the easy access on a paved road and free parking. Go on a weekday if you can.
