They spoke to the person with respect, kept calm so that the situation didn't escalate, but also made sure that all the other customers' needs were being met and felt safe. The worst PAM in NYC : shelves are not well displayed, the staff is really rude (no Hi, no thank you, no bye). And if you dare asking for a receipt it's worse! Management must be really bad to allow these behaviors. My office is next to this PAM and we all agree: we avoid going there -we prefer crossing Union Square and go to DIG rather than going there. Since Pret introduced their coffee pass program ( you pay $30 per month for unlimited espresso drinks from the menu) this location has become a mess! Now the location is full of people who could probably afford a cup of coffee from Macdonald's across the street, but now they are all here because of the Coffee pass!! I normally don't write reviews, but TLDR: an employee named Susan B here was quite rude for no reason. I had a gift card, and after trying to swipe it through the card reader a couple of times, she crisply told me "one second", as if she had asked me to wait before, but it was like she wanted me to read her mind. She was very passive aggressive, as if she was having a bad morning, but taking it out on me. The "passive" in passive aggressive I refer to is as if she was trying to hide it, but very poorly, and her sourness would come through anyway. Turns out that she didn't actually know that *she* had to process the gift card as the card reader wouldn't read it, and another employee had to process the transaction. I had gotten a yogurt cup and asked for a honey packet at the start of the interaction, because another employee said that they had honey packets behind the counter, and I wouldn't have gotten the yogurt if I knew they didn't have the honey, as I need to keep my blood sugar high. But since she didn't react when I asked her, I thought she may have ignored me or not heard me to give her the benefit of the doubt. But I think she had just ignored me, because when I asked for it again after paying, she told me to wait a minute, and took the next couple customers before checking for the honey packet, which would have taken less than 10 seconds. She told me that there aren't any more, so when I saw a manager, I asked if there were any in the back, and not only did she find that there was one behind the counter, (when I had previously been told there weren't any), but she came back with a bunch not only for me, but to restock the counter. The yogurt was fine, the place was clean, and the manager and other employees were friendly and helpful. But someone needs to talk to Susan about customer service. read more

This is a two-floor Pret, so there is plenty of space to sit. However, actual tables are upstairs and window seats are downstairs. I mainly wanted to write this review to mention David, because he was so friendly and funny, and he particularly made my day! Thank you, David, you charming man, you. However, the disappointing thing was that all their outlets downstairs are fully dead, and there are none available upstairs! Bring back the outlets! It was so inconvenient to sit down and start working, but see that I couldn't stay due to lack of power! So keep that in mind if you're planning to come here to do work. read more

When I brought it to the cashiers attention, it was rectified. And now again at the one on 3rd between 53rd and 54th, the wrap was not filled completely. The woman at the register basically said that it is weighed pursuant to the portion size. And her attitude did not help. However, literally half of one half was empty so I really have a hard time believing that comment. Plus I always get these wraps and that is the first time it has happened. It wasn't like a portion of it was fuller than another. Basically, either check it before you leave the store and stop going to Pret, especially since Pret is not cheap. This place is solid for getting coffee and a quick bite. I love coming here with a book from BArnes and Noble or Strand nearby. There's some chairs outside. I get the monthly coffee espresso pass. Sandwich chain from the UK that has been quickly expanding in NYC. This chain is similar to the Europan/PAX Foods chains, but it is a cut above those ones. Very reasonable prices, and very fresh and healthy food. I like their sandwiches a lot. The customer service is usually very good as well. This particular location is the one I have been to the most. It is very clean and a great place to get something light to eat in the Union Square area. There is always a good selection of food on display. read more

Been a long-time customer, esp. the one at Union Square, but aside from raising their prices annually, what they just did was the WORST. There are many students that go there, esp from NYU that use the cafe as a place to study, meet, etc... so there are plenty of outlets for people to charge their laptops and phone while they work or eat lunch or hang out. One day, last week, they unplugged them all. But they claimed it was "broken." BS. Really? No wonder the place is empty now. I've been to other Prets which are wonderful (esp. the one on 45th and 6th Ave), but the one in Union Square is now WORSE THAN STARBUCKS (which I refuse to go to anymore). Just had a book club meeting here, and the service was ok. My biggest pet peeve is when someone is taking your order (or should be taking your order) and is chatting with another working or otherwise ignoring me. The woman who took my order was loudly conversing with a friend across the counter, so I had to wait to order and was interrupted while asking questions. My espresso came out with no cream (I mean, it's hard to take orders and chat at the same time so I get it but also just do your job), which is obviously not a big deal but it made me feel justified in my annoyance. Right around closing time a drunk and disorderly patron was generally causing problems and ended up throwing a stool. The staff was very professional with him, even after he began slinging racial epithets. He eventually left, pausing to heckle a few other customers on the way out, but the behaviour of the staff was really admirable. I'm in there everyday for coffee and food...even buying items daily for my staff. Today I stopped in, enjoyed a sandwich and an iced-coffee, then before leaving, approached the stairs to use the bathroom. A security guard stopped me and demanded my receipt. Remember, I'm in there everyday...a regular constant. My receipt had hit the trash long before, so I approached the counter staff. They gave me a blank stare. First upon arrival I was not greeted politely but was met by a customer service representative who appeared to be bothered by my mere presence and should not be employed at all in customer service. Then and I know for certain that I handed him a $20.00 bill for my purchase. He then handed me change for $10.00. When I questioned and shared with him that I know I definitely handed him a $20.00 bill he challenged me and stated that I did not. A manager was NOT readily available and I was running to my place of employment which is in the same neighborhood. No other customers were in the store at this time either so he was not super busy. I was Completely and Totally disappointed and dismayed. I have shopped here many times before and have even told my own customers that this place was great! So prets are like the Starbucks of England. But here in NY I usually just go to Starbucks. Well I was at pret for the first time today and I absolutely adore them! I went to two. The first one to get a coffee, at the suggestion of my bf who used to go to prets in London. The second, after about an hour of wandering around Union square with our coffees and needing to pee, we spotted another pret and walked in. Both locations were very nice to be in. And the most important thing is that their coffee is 1000 times better than Starbucks!! It's luxurious, fresh and delicious. I'm not knowledgeable about coffee so when my bf told me I would love their coffee I thought that I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. So I was wrong there is definitely a difference. I got a 16oz latte. And it was really good. Another great thing.. Their cups and lids are so heavy they keep the warmth in - 40 min later and my coffee had kept warm at the bottom... Warmer than it was outside.. I thought it made the experience more enjoyable. They have a bunch of other cute, personal sized goodies that come in unique packaging. Like small yogurts, granola, baked goods, sandwiches, juices etc We got a latte, a cappuccino and an almond croissant. The latte with the almond pastry was extremely filling. This Pret is located right at the Union Sq. and it has a nice spacious eating area upstairs. You need the code to get into the bathrooms. It was 3234? I forget. :) I had the wrap with veggies and wild salmon (looked like sockeye) for about $7 and I really enjoyed it. It had only 290 calories.
