I had high expectations for this place after seeing how busy it was and the yelp reviews, but unfortunately, I was not impressed. I ordered the picanha steak medium rare with the side of mash potatoes and carrots...the best part of the meal was probably the mash potatoes. The steak was well seasoned with the garlic butter sauce that they put over it but it was not cooked right. It was still a bright red color and was extremely tough to chew. My friends who ordered the New York steak and picanha as well had the same problem. One was over cooked and the other was way undercooked. I tried Primal Cuts for the first time this past weekend as my boyfriend and I explored the Rodeo 39 Market for our first time since moving to Garden Grove. Their case of steaks displayed out front definitely caught our eye, and we were intrigued by the idea of a small place in a food court type area offering fresh steaks. After checking out the menu, we opted for burgers instead because it felt easier to eat at a place like this. (Though, we would like to try the steaks another time) There's just three burgers to choose from, so my boyfriend and I ordered two different ones to share. We got the Butcher's Burger, and the Truffle Butter Burger. I really enjoyed the Butcher's burger, which had caramelized onion, arugula, garlic aioli, and swiss. It was really flavorful, but it was also kind of messy. I think just the amount of onions/aioli made the bun soggy so it didn't hold together too well. As for the Truffle Butter Burger, my boyfriend enjoyed it, however I felt a little disappointed. The burger has smoked gouda, truffle butter, raw onion, and steak sauce on the side. I couldn't taste any truffle, which was disappointing especially because the girl at the counter made it sound like it was a strong flavor in the burger. To be honest, the only thing I could taste was the gouda. There was a thick slice of it, and not very melted, so it overpowered the other flavors. If you love fries like I do, this is a great spot!! Their fries were thin, crisp (but not overly done), and perfectly seasoned. Even after being full I couldn't stop munching on them! They also give you a very good sized portion with your burger. Also, they make their own ketchup. Typically, I am absolutely not a ketchup person, but being house made I had to try it and I'm glad I did. Its much more flavorful than what you typically expect from a ketchup, and had a nice peppery bite to it. If you're stopping by Rodeo 39, I recommend trying out a burger, and grabbing a seat near the brewery to have a beer with it! I look forward to trying out one of their steaks. read more

We ate warm steak, warm mushrooms, warm and soggy fries inside the premise. This restaurant offers sit-down quality price for less-than-homemade quality food. The claim of dry-aging their steak for 8 days is a strange one, because that short timeframe offers almost no taste difference from a regular steak you can get from Costco or Sam's Club, but the additional garlic butter/truffle butter would most likely overpower that subtle difference. A medium rare steak came warm; the type of coolness that you would expect from buying a to-go, plus the 30-minute drive home. But we opened the boxes and ate on the spot. Unlike a rested steak you can cook at home, the steak lacked juice. It was tender but not succulent. It's like they soaked up the juice with a napkin before putting it in the box; or the meat was not cooked to order. Mushroom is soft and tasty, but also came slightly too cold. It was about the temperature of a to-go box of Panda Express mushroom chicken in your microwave, after you finished eating the rest of your food and realized that you have forgotten to start the microwave. Fries was soggy. They put it under the steak instead of keeping it in a separate box, it is the type of mistake you won't make cooking at home. Mashed potato might be a better choice here in Primal Cuts. read more

These are honestly the worst steaks I have ever had. To be honest, I could get better steaks at Denny's or Applebee's. I ordered the Picanha and it was way too chewy and inedible. I had the "OG" burger and it was ok. It was cooked perfectly but I think the meat needed more seasoning. The bun was dry so it immediately started crumbling. I ended up with meat patty no buns. I was so excited to try this place because of the reviews but unfortunately I feel let down. I ordered the 6 oz Picanha steak "medium rare" with mashed potatoes and mushrooms. Steak came out way too rare and was SUPER chewy. It started to feel like a workout for my jaw and i ended up spitting out some of it because it was just WAY too chewy. My bf ordered the 8 oz and also asked for medium rare. His came out almost well done which is funny because he asked the cashier if medium rare would actually be medium rare and cashier responded "they (the cooks) know what they're doing"-- clearly they don't. The sides however were the saving grace. HIT OR MISS The fiance and I decided to get food from Primal Cuts for our anniversary dinner and was rather looking forward to it. I initially read through some of the negative reviews, but decided to give this place the benefit of the doubt because I thought the low star reviewers just exaggerating. Haha, this was one of those instances where I feel like I should have listened to those reviews and saved my time and money. THE FOOD One order of ribeye, one order of picanha. We went right around dinner time around 7 ish and they'd run out of mashed potatoes and mushrooms. But unfortunately that left ONE other complimentary side, the heirloom carrots, but she also mentioned we can add fries as a side, so that's what we did. For Sunday dinner, the rush wasn't so bad so we got our food in a reasonable amount of time. So we take it home and dig in. - The carrots were good. Nothing spectacular, but a solid side - The fries were stale and old. We took a couple bites of these and couldn't finish the rest. - The picanha. Haha oh my. oh. my. Never. in. my. life. In my ENTIRE life, have I EVER tasted meat this mediocre. WOW. I thought the other reviews talking about how chewy the meat is were just being needlessly picky. Boy, was I wrong. I could not chew through half the meat. The rest, I had to tackle with my hands and tear of tiny bits with my teeth to be able to consume the food without wasting it. It wasn't because the meat was so overcooked, the meat got tough. It was the tendons or something--just terribly inedible. Maybe I just got a bad piece, but nothing about it was remotely enjoyable from the toughness of the meat to the metallic aftertaste of iron. I don't know why this was so chewy, but it seems it's not uncommon based on some of the other reviews from here. And I'm pretty sure they forgot the truffle butter on my steak that we paid for. for $16 + tax + tip, this was not worth the disappointment. - The ribeye. Ok so this was probably the ONLY saving grace from this entire experience. The meat was juicy, flavorful, cooked to medium rare as requested. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE Alright, let's talk about the customer service here, or lack thereof. The girl at the register was nice enough. She wasn't overtly friendly or anything, but she had a bit of an attitude. Maybe she was just tired from the day or something, fed up with some other customers maybe, so she wanted to share that sentiment and make sure everybody else she met felt less than optimal for the rest of the night as well. The way she answered our questions were just kinda apathetic? Another review mentioned the service was flat and like that of McDonalds, and that statement kinda wraps it up for me. Nothing personal against the cashier, but it's something management might consider paying attention to because the register is the face of the business. You want to make sure whoever is at the front is making a positive impression. FINAL THOUGHTS I really wanted to like this place a lot, I really did. But it's just not somewhere I'd return to or recommend. Potential? Primal Cuts has so much of it. SO much potential, but they can't be doing the same thing they are doing now if they want to stay in business and bring in more customers. The problem is inconsistency. The meat can't sometimes be good or sometimes bad. You can't sometimes have mashed potatoes and not prepare enough to run out when it's not even the dinner rush. Yeah I know it's not a multi-billion dollar franchise that's able to push out the same, expected taste every single time. But honestly, they need to re-evaluate where they are sourcing their meat because that lack of oversight in ingredient quality and supply seems to be the biggest weakness. If it's a fast food, some stale fries are forgiveable. Some flat customer service, is unfortunately completely excusable. But ultimately as a "finer" dining spot, I expect a little more. Bravo if you've read this far. If you're still on the fence about trying this place out, good luck. I won't be recommending this to my friends because there are plenty of other steakhouses that can provide much better service and food quality for the price. We ordered the 6oz filet mignon with 2 sides (broccolini and carrots) but there's something about a paper to-go box, plastic forks, a dirty table and filet mignon that just didn't seem quite right. For $27 ( broccolini is a $2 up-charge) I would rather go to a steakhouse and have a mignon served on a plate, via waiter delivery, to ensure it's hot off the grill. read more

Tried this place out on the grand opening of rodeo39. They were out of rib eye unfortunately, but I've always wanted to try picanha so I ordered that with mushroom and mashed potatoes. Took about 30 minutes, but was understandable on such a busy day. My picanha wasn't medium rare, more medium. However it was still delicious. You can taste the truffle butter but it doesn't overpower the natural flavor of the steak. The mushrooms were delicious, wish I got two sides of it instead. Mashed potatoes were good, nothing special though. Definitely worth the price! read more

I had this place bookmarked for quite some time and finally had a chance to stop by to try it out, and everything was amazing! From service to the food, everything was simply amazing. My boyfriend and I had the Caesar salad to start and we both shared the ribeye steak dinner with asparagus as a side. The salad was refreshing and tasted super fresh. The steak was cooked to perfection! The owner was kind enough to give us complimentary cheesecake and it was seriously one of the best cheesecake I've had. 10/10 would recommend!! read more
