Because this was an excellent choice for a 40th birthday celebration. --- --- --- There are standard birthdays and anniversaries, but you gotta do something really special for the milestone occasions. While we took a fun vacation earlier in the summer, for the actual date of birth itself, we opted to visit Prime 131 after an embarrassing amount of research. Anytime you are spending $415 on one meal, you want to make sure it's a good one, and it was indeed a good one! Item by item... Miami Vice: 5-stars. A cocktail meant to be enjoyed on the beach, but also pretty perfect for a birthday dinner. Chicken Fried Lobster: 5-stars. Do you like lobster? Do you like chicken fried steak? Would you enjoy the perfect marriage of the two? Keyword: "perfect", because that's what this was. Parker House Rolls: 5-stars. They come out in a skillet on top of a layer of melted butter juices. Do I need to explain why these are 5-stars? Dinosaur Bone Marrow: 3-stars. A rare miss for this experience. To be honest, 3-stars is probably generous. I would not ever need to order this again. It was essentially like a beef stew or a pot roast meat on top of a giant bone. The presentation was cool, but the taste was a big disappointment. 14 oz Australian Wagyu NY Strip with truffle butter: 5-stars. One of the best steaks I've had in a long time. I already used the word "perfect" above for the chicken fried lobster, but it also applies here. No notes. Yes, it was $145, so you could say that it better be good, but sadly, I've had some expensive steaks that were not so good. Ricotta Stuffed Mac and Cheese: 5-stars. Along with the lobster and the steak, this was the other co-favorite. My wife and I both agreed that this was as good as mac-n-cheese gets. Loaded Mashed Potato: 4-stars. A really solid side, but just not quite on the level of the mac. I liked how it came with Au Jus. Birthday Tart: 5-stats. This was brought out for free because we were celebrating a birthday and I actually loved it! It was a lot better than the paid dessert, IMO. 131 Skillet Fudge: 3-stars. So I am not from Houston but decided to stop here for dinner, since the reviews were awesome. It was my first time here and they sat me and my husband at the chefs table, this was a pretty cool dining experience as we got to be up close watching staff hard at work and our food being prepped in front of us. We ordered a little bit of everything and might I say that the bone marrow appetizer is amazing, just as everything else. My family and I had a wonderful dinner at Prime 131 celebrating Houston Restaurant Week. Upon entering, the restaurant is very nice and I'd classify it as "warehouse chic". Props to them for being handicapped-friendly and having a ramp that leads to the front door. We did more of a family-style dinner so we could try a variety of their menu. For apps we had their cannelini bean soup, Dragon roll, crunchy spicy tuna, and roasted oysters. My fave of the apps was the dragon roll because of its large portions of shrimp tempura. For entrees we got the grilled bone-in short rib (large portion!), miso cod, prime filet, and wagyu skirt steak. My all-time fave was the wagyu skirt steak...talk about juicy and tender! We also ordered a side of mashed potatoes for the table and the raclette made it so cheesy! The desserts, in my opinion, were some of the best I'd had at a restaurant in a long time. We had their basque cheesecake, caramel posset, and black forest cake. Each dessert was a work of art, but we loved the whole show that came with the cheesecake and the berry smoke was such a unique touch. The newest concept from Berg Hospitality group did not disappoint! Great for intimate occasions! We were celebrating birthdays and decided to splurge a little making it an unforgettable experience. Food - tried the smoked veal bacon, dinosaur bone marrow and chicken fried lobster to start. Winner there would be the bacon. Main course- sampled the Australian Wagyu tomahawk and the Hokkaido Prefecture Snow Beef Striploin. MELTS in your mouth like butter ! Located in a revamp industrial part of Timbergrove area. Good location to me because I live nearby. Parking was an ease. There is $8 valet but I opted to self-park which was complimentary. I didn't have a reservation for a Sunday night. So I was a walk in but was greeted and seated at a table for one (me!) mood was overall romantic and upscale. I like the vibe, you can see the kitchen and fire from the stoves working. I order for my main, the bone-in short rib. It was giving very much The Flintstones but it was GOOD. Very tender and flavorful. However, I was disappointed in the size of the loaded mashed potatoes for the price. The size was very personal which would be good for only one person, in my opinion. I wanted leftovers but the only thing that I had leftover was the short rib. There is a dessert menu that is separate. I got the Basque cheesecake! It was yummy! We had the best experience here!!! We came early for dinner and the menu is pretty big. We ordered a little of everything from different sections on the menu. We started off with the mini crab cakes, the hamachi crudo, and I got the shrimp tempura roll since I can't eat anything raw at the moment. All of them were excellent! I was pleasantly surprised by the shrimp tempura roll. It was really fresh and the flavors were on point. For our entrees, we for the Australian wagyu strip steak and the lobster. Both were cooked perfectly and I can't recommend these enough! For dessert, we got the deconstructed key lime pie which I wasn't a fan of. Prime 131 is a major HIGHLIGHT on my 33rd birthday! I'm usually skeptical on trying out newer restaurants that don't have many reviews, especially when they're expensive but eating here has opened my food mind. Based on the reasons I just stated I wouldn't have chosen this place but I was taken here and I'm SO glad I was! To start off with the area is low-key so it's easy to get to. They offer valet but also have some accessible free parking spaces. I saw the beef images outside so knew it was a steakhouse but was pleasantly surprised to find their quality sushi menu as well. I bring up sushi but prior to going here I had never tried any raw sushi and had been skeptical of trying it since I had a tuna tartar elsewhere that I couldn't stomach to finish. I think it was a whirlwind of the quality presentation at the sushi bar, them having A5 steak (I'll get to that later) and it being my birthday that made me adventurous enough to try the raw sushi. I'm extremely glad that I did! The person that I was with also tried raw sushi for the first time and it wasn't for them but I believe that's just the idea of raw sushi didn't agree with her. I went with the 5 piece Chef's Selection of Nigiri and after sharing 1, I enjoyed the rest. I forget exactly which pieces were included. I personally did request a soy sauce for dipping but the sushi was good either way. I love a good bread to start a meal and the Parker House Rolls were a delight. I went with the Chicken Fried Lobster for an appetizer. Again the person with me didn't enjoy it but I loved it. The lobster pieces were well seasoned themselves but the sauces (3 I believe) worked really well with it and together gave a well rounded tang to it. I personally prefer not to have alcohol with my dinner but due to the somewhat limited non-alcoholic beverages they have (they do have a number of mocktails) I decided to do a French 75 as I am typically a drinker of gin. Now to be honest I love mac and cheese and I'll probably order it 9/10 times at most places. I can honestly say that I am beyond glad that I tried it here as well. Not because it was just a flavorful Mac and Cheese but because it was done in an inventively new way for me. It was large pasta shells Stuffed with Ricotta Cheese. This was my first time having ricotta in a mac and cheese and it came together pleasantly. I'm unsure what all other cheeses were in the dish, but there was also a foam over the top that help make the dish light yet decadent. The Spinach Gratin was no slouch as well. The ricotta stuffed mac and cheese was my favorite of the two, but I would struggle to try another option the next time I come because they were both delicious. I'm sure that the fact that they offer A5 Japanese Wagyu was a significant reason this place was chosen for me. I had never tried it prior to coming here but it was definitely on my bucket list. As soon as I saw it, I basically knew that I had to at least try it. They also offer American and Australian wagyu as well as USDA prime, but not many places offer A5 Japanese wagyu. I will say that reading is fundamental lol. Looking at the menu, I wondered why the A5 Japanese wagyu prices were lower than the American and Australian wagyu since I know it is of a higher quality in price. I just assumed that they were smaller Cuts and so you would just be getting less me at per price. I went with Kagawa Prefecture Olive Beef Tenderloin. The person with me was also going to get A5 until they notice that the a five beef was priced per ounce and had a 4 oz minimum, so she instead ordered a lower cost cut of steak. I didn't realize this until after I had fully ordered. Again I enjoyed my A5 steak but she wasn't a fan of it. By the way I did get mine cooked medium. We had the prime 131 steak sauce, yakiniku sauce, and ponzu garlic butter sauce to go with the steaks. They were all cool but weren't needed with the steaks. For dessert, I ordered the Basque Cheesecake because I wanted something light and it came with a smoke presentation. Had I known that I would also have been receiving a complimentary birthday dessert as well I likely would not have ordered the extra. I'm not sure what the complimentary dessert was but it was cool. I can't say that the cheesecake was better. The cheesecake also had an almond Our waiter was helpful and regularly kept coming to the table to check on our order. The bus boy with him (I'm not sure if that's the right word) clearly had a sense of being new but was fairly kind and helpful as well. One of my only complaints would probably be that the waiter did bring me chopsticks that had about an inch of the tip of one of them broken but he did swiftly replace it once I asked for a replacement. The inside of the restaurant is pretty chill personally the decor didn't stand out but I did really enjoy the open kitchen with the fires they use. First, let me say that Prime 131 had amazing food and wine selections. The house rolls and butter were delicious and very fresh and warm. Almost everyone at my table ordered the filet and it was cooked to perfection and came out hot. The broccolini, fries, and mashed potatoes were also delicious. A few things I didn't love and that knocked this restaurant down.... 1. The first thing you smelled when you walked in the restaurant was an overwhelming smell of Mezcal. 2. However, this is perfect for an engagement party, anniversary, date night, or something extra special. We ate in the private party room and the food came out steadily and in a timely manner. Edamame (salted) - Can't go wrong with this. It was perfectly salted and a great appetizer! Food Was Just Okay--But Getting Charged Three Times Was Not - Still No Resolution On Saturday, March 29th, my partner flew into town for just one day, and we chose Prime131 for what we hoped would be a nice dinner. Unfortunately, the experience turned into a frustrating and costly ordeal. We had a reservation and were seated promptly, but it took over 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. Our waitress eventually apologized for the delay and took our order. The food was a mixed bag--lobster (3/5), vegan rolls (2/5), bread rolls (1/5), soup (4/5), crab cakes (4/5), asparagus (3/5), and the water (5/5). The real issue began when it was time to pay. Prime131 uses the "InKind" app, which was offering $50 off a $150+ order. Our bill before tip was $225.17. While I was trying to apply the discount on the app, our waitress stood next to me, said "you do it here," and what she pressed was "Pay Now" on my phone before I could stop her. That charge came out to $261.31 (including tip). She apologized and said her manager could reverse it. A few minutes later, she returned saying the first charge had been reversed and a new ticket was ready. I then paid again, this time successfully using the coupon--charge number two for $212.61. However, I checked my account and saw both charges had gone through. When I brought this up, the waitress had the manager, Jacqueline, come over and she voided the second charge instead of the first. She then generated a third ticket for $212.61 and asked me to pay again. I received a fraud alert from my bank, cleared it, and paid the third charge. Now I had been charged twice--once for $261.31 and once for $212.61. Jacqueline assured me the $261.31 charge would "fall off." It didn't. On Monday, March 31st, both charges cleared my bank. I received a duplicate charge alert and had to open a dispute with my bank, who now requires a full investigation. On top of that, I've submitted all supporting documentation to help my case. I emailed Prime131 on April 1st. I called on April 2nd. Today is April 3rd and I have heard absolutely nothing back--not an email, not a phone call, not even a courtesy follow-up. At the very least, manager Jacqueline should have followed up after the error they made. They had my contact info from the reservation, yet have chosen not to respond. It's exhausting having to chase down almost $300 due to a restaurant's repeated mistakes, while also fighting with my bank to recover my own money. I'm tired of establishments that present themselves as upscale or premium, but fail to deliver even basic customer service or accountability. The food was just okay, the service lacked attentiveness, and the aftermath has been nothing short of a hassle. If you're going to charge fine-dining prices, the experience--from the meal to the follow-through--should reflect that. Reviews have a way of bringing about a sense of urgency, where there was none so perhaps this will prompt the attention and action that should've happened days ago. I hope Prime131 steps up and resolves this fully and promptly. read more

Went back a second time with family. Phenomenal experience again. The waiters and waitress were very attentive and we had a blast with family from out of town. We love the class of the restaurant while not upholding a strict attire. The place is perfect for both casual and upscale fine dining. Grabbed some of our prior dishes but also got the crab cakes (amazing), olive wagyu (melts in your mouth), and the omakase (includes three speciality rolls). We loved everything from the esthetic presentation of the omakase to the sparklers. Very sad the family did not get to experience the chicken fried lobster since it was out this time. Once again, Prime 131 knocks it out of the park. $3k in food was worth every moment for the family. Lupe did a great job like our last waitress and Shawn the GM was great as always. We dined here on our anniversary last night and man were we impressed! Edwin was our server and he was extremely attentive and took care of everything we needed all night. Edwin came by multiple times to make sure we didn't need anything, always keeping our drinks full! Sat at the bar with a friend for a night cap and the bartenders were spectacular. Industrial & moody ambience. They were so welcoming and knowledgeable and our drinks were great! Elizabeth & kyle are why we'll start coming back. Great place. read more

Went to Prime 131 for the first time last night. We had 8:30 reservations but weren't seated until after 9. While waiting at the bar, my wife and I were ignored by the bartender until I politely asked if we could order a drink. She ordered a strawberry mojito (which she felt was below average), while I had the dragon fruit margarita, which was phenomenal. Once seated, we had two servers -- Isabella stood out and really made the night pleasant, while the other server seemed less attentive. We did the 3-course menu. I started with the lobster miso soup (which unfortunately came out cold the first time). To their credit, they remade it, but when the male server brought it back, he just placed it down without a word, which felt a bit rude. My wife had the 131 salad, which she enjoyed. For mains, I ordered the Wagyu short steak and my wife had the short rib with a side of mac & cheese. My steak was cooked medium rare as ordered but came out cold, which likely meant it sat too long before coming to the table. It was decent, but not what I'd expect at this level. My wife's short rib, however, was outstanding -- tender, flavorful, and well-seasoned. Dessert was the highlight of the night. The cheesecake and bread pudding were both excellent and ended the meal on a high note. Overall, I'd give Prime 131 a 2.5/5. The drinks (for me) and desserts were fantastic, and Isabella provided great service, but the food quality and overall execution fell short, especially at a $200 bill. Came in the last hour for cocktails and Elizabeth and Kyle behind the bar were the best! Would definitely recommend stopping by and asking for them the food and drinks were great. Very chill atmosphere. read more
