We started with the Carpaccio which I really enjoyed, the arugula complimented the beef tenderloin. My husband preferred the Mozzarella sticks. We met some friends at Primo as it is roughly half way between Dayton and Cincinatti. The menu has a little bit of everything, and we had a difficult time deciding what to get. We ended up starting with fried lasagna rolls and they were absolutely delicious. For entrees I got the bolognese and my SO got the 6oz filet. My bolognese was tasty and the pasta was al dente which is fine by me. Unfortunately though, my SO's steak (which was ordered medium), came out rare. For a steakhouse, I'd expect they could cook a filet to the ordered temperature. Ambience was quaint, and the servers were friendly. I was (and continue to be) really rooting for this restaurant (because, Italian food) but I did recognize some issues that other Yelpers had reported over the months. But take note: there have been some major changes. It seems that management paid attention to some feedback and I sat a lot of improvement although a couple of changes I do not like. First off, the pretentious introductory matter by the server appears to be a thing of the past - no more lesson in the chef's culinary training history or exposition on the custom made water bottles. Service was very good. Tony was our waiter on the most recent visit and he was excellent. The sorbet palate cleanser is still around (YAY!) and was perfectly timed to follow the salad and soup course. The menu has been completely overhauled. Entrees now come with a side - and the sides are reasonably priced with a good variety. The steak prices have come down and different sized options are on offer. My husband added the lobster tail to his steak and it was excellent and a nice big lobster tail, for the price! Much bigger than expected. Sadly, the veal dishes including the osso bucco have been removed from the menu. And alas, the disgusting paper straws are still here. I lodged another complaint, but at least I remembered to bring my own straws. I think this amused the waiter. We'll be back, and you should give it a try (or another try) too. read more

We ordered Carpaccio, and bolognese spaghetti, tiramisu for dessert. No complaints there. The food was good. But the service... they young waitresses was very unpolished and all over the place. She filled up the small water glasses, one half full the other one too full. She kept awkwardly checking on us a few times: seriously: awkward. She just came up to the table half way almost like she didn't want to talk to us. When I ordered an espresso after dinner she looked at me oddly. She then said a what? Yes we have an espresso machine. Espresso came - in a cappuccino cup. No spoon - no sugar. I also found it odd that when we made a reservation on Open table that the restaurant stated to be booked out but in reality it was very! empty. I think they were trying to create a sense of urgency. This is legit in my top 2 most amazing and unique salads. Ever. And I love a good salad. Between courses we received a champagne and sorbet palate cleanser. Trés chic. I haven't been served a palate cleanser since the late 80s. This is a posh trend that needs to make a comeback. For the main entree, the Hubbs got a steak. He enjoyed the salt rub. I ordered the Tagliatelle Alla Bolognese. Delish! The pasta was perfectly prepared and the bolognese was meaty and flavorful. The $40 fillet that is on their website currently was not on the menu but the $52 fillet was. The baked potato that came with the steak was visibly burnt through. New restaurant in old downtown Middletown. I gather they have another location in Cincinnati and i hope they have good luck here. We were looking for reservations here and had best luck on open table app. They did not seat me until my husband was with me even though i said he was parking. We had been here when it was another restaurant. I like the building and stained glass. Seating was comfortable and bigger parties had a couch with table. They are very newly opened so I understand to grade on a curve. The staff were very nice and asked us many times if we needed anything and if we enjoyed it. Frankly, it was very pricey and didnt measure up to similar price point. 50-275 for steak. 12 for cocktails. Water glasses are very odd and tiny. We asked for ice and kept the small hlass the ice came in. Literally the water glass was closer to a shot glass size. We started with the beef carpaccio which was the thinnest id ever had. It had some greens and onion and capers on it. I would recommend it. We both got pasta entrees. I got carbonara. I liked the flavor and small portion but the pasta was disappointing. I was hoping at this price for an Aldinte texture. My husband got something with more meat a sauce. He gets something similar to mamma desalvos. Which would have been twice the amount for less price. We both were underwhelmed by the pasta. We ended the meal split with Chocolate chip cannoli. I liked it was 4 small cannolis but there was alot of lemon zest that frankly was off-putting. They offer valet for 7$ but we found free parking right in front. There arent any fine dining locations in Middletown so i hope this fills a void. They are definitely trying and i hope they do well. Personally I don't know if we will return... the cost was high .. portions were small and some aspects were lacking. Even if some improved i think for this price we would go to Jeff Ruby or Flemings. I don't know if everyone else reviewing this place just went to a different restaurant or something but I've never had a dinner experience this awful. For starters, the service was laughable at best. They took over an hour to take our orders for entrees and they routinely would fill up our table's water bottle without asking us about anything else. This persisted until we had to flag down a waitress to get them to take our orders, and when we did that they said they cannot take our order and that someone would be with us shortly. 10 minutes pass and what I can only assume is the head chef came out to take our orders which went surprisingly smoothly. Since we had been there for an hour and a half already I decided that I would use the bathroom as we had been filling up on the "house water". When I asked the waitress where the bathroom was, she said "I do not know" and went back into the kitchen to ask someone else. I understand if she was new, but that is something that has never happened to me in a restaurant and it represents the establishment fairly well (the bathroom did not have paper towels or toilet paper in either of the two bathrooms). After my bathroom break they brought out rolls that were hard as rocks (they brought us 4 rolls for a party of 8?!?), and once we complained to the chef he said he would get us a new loaf which looked completely different and was much better (which also took ~25 minutes). The waiting staff never came back to check on us so we had to go to the bar to get our own new bottle of wine. We were already visibly agitated, so the head chef came out again and gave us a free bottle of wine on the house, which I thought was a nice gesture, but it seemed to be an attempt to save face, as the service never managed to improve throughout our time there. Once the food came out the waitress began by asking, "who had the bolognese?" to which our entire party looked at one another, waiting for someone to claim it, but soon enough they realized this was not our food, and was rather for the table next to us. Once the food got to us (~25 minutes later, 1 1/4 hours since we had ordered), my $58 medium rare filet was so overcooked that I had to send it back (which I have NEVER done before). When they brought it back it was undercooked this time, to the point where I could've sworn I head it "moo". After sending it back two more times I finally accepted it and only half of it was cooked medium rare, while the other half was well done. After we were all done, we waited for the check for a solid 20-25 minutes as if we were being held hostage, and they gave us some desserts on the house and we just left. I don't even mention the side of Mac and cheese that I got that was overcooked on the top, tasted very artificial, and was topped with random bread crumbs that added nothing at all. I could go on as there was much more that did not live up to expectations, but the point is: if you have 3 hours and $300 to spare for food worse than Olive Garden then be my guest and try this place out! We had reservations for 6:30 p.m. last night and arrived about 15 minutes early. We stormed out at about 8:20 p.m. after only having been served appetizers. What happened in between was the worst service we have ever had at a restaurant in Ohio, the U.S., and everywhere else we have eaten when traveling worldwide. As briefly as possibly, we were seated, given menus and then waited. After 20 minutes waiter Dan asked if we'd been there before and we told him it was our first time. He then started talking about the chef having studied in Tuscany, etc. but it was very hard to hear him over the music. An elderly member of our party asked if he could turn it down. Dan angrily told him no. Next, a woman who didn't identify herself came to our table with water, and trying to hear her over the music, told us all about the bottle it was in, which had the word "water" printed on it in a dozen languages. We were trying to understand the significance of this water, and asked her some questions, learning that it was actually just tap water, but it's special because they filter it. She then poured each of us some of this special tap water into what can only be desribed as mini glasses. We never were able to find out if there was an extra charge for this. Then, having been there for over an hour, and being hungry, we asked if we could have some bread. We were angrily told that bread comes when the appetizers are served. Apparently asking for the music (NOT Tony Bennet or Vivaldo but oddly out of place 70's rock n' roll) to be turned down, wanting to know what was so special about their tap water, and asking for bread after an hour of arriving must have pissed off the waitstaff. Because we then watched diners come in after us and FINISH their entrees while we waited for our intermezzo sorbet we were told we'd be served before our entrees. Our waiter perfectly executed the no-eye-contact bit we've all seen in comedy movies. But this was no comedy. At 8:20 p.m. I motioned to a man who occasionally darted through the room with no obvious purpose to come over. I asked if he was the manager and when he said yes I told him the service was outrageous and to cancel our order. He mumbled an apology, hard to hear over the music, and we left. But our waiter did tell our elderly companion that he "had an attitude" which we all took as an admission that we were being punished. Obviously we won't ever go back. Here's an idea, let's put a high end restaurant in the same building as the previous high end restaurant that didn't get any business. The secret is to charge high prices, ration out small portions and we'll be in the money! Downtown Middletown is more forsaken and deserted than an old west ghost town. We visited on a Saturday to have drinks to try to support said ghost town. No beer, fine. How about $17 martini that was half full? Or a $14.50 cocktail that was about 3 ounces. But the still water is the best you'll ever have! It comes in a fancy bottle so you know it's good. (this is sarcasm). The worst part of it all was someone who I assumed to be the assistant manager, or maybe bathroom attendant, mad dogging us with his 70's Carol Brady haircut. He just stared at us several times like we didn't meet his standards. Top it off with a cheap zoot suit, flip your scarf, and you've reached super status. Having a valet was hysterical, as if there's going to be some massive influx of customers. You better get another one quick, we're expecting customers in to reach double digits this week! We passed by about 6 PM on a Saturday and there were about 8 people inside. The staff was very friendly (except him) and the interior was nicely done, by the previous owners. I hope to buy a few tables and chairs when the place closes down. Maybe even one of the fancy water bottles if I can afford it. If you're lucky to get one of the tables by the windows, you can stare into a filthy parking lot or watch a local redneck drive a monster truck by. Or perhaps admire some vagrant barfing onto the curb. You can see the prices are really high before going, and the output doesn't match. When I left, I let out some primo farts. read more

We ordered filets (that looked like sirloins so just save yourself the money and get the sirloin), baked potatoes (that looked sad and lacked the "loaded" aspect we paid for a premium side) and a side of Mac to share. Our food came out it without the Mac, so we asked our server. Her response was "OH I don't know, the kitchen just got really busy" instead of I'm sorry let me check on that for you. She did not once ask us how our meal was, if we needed refills or if I wanted another $17 primo tini. Not even have a good night after she brought our check. I know it was busy but her attitude was poor and really affected the experience. I don't know that I would be back, and if I did I would order something less expensive as I don't feel the price point matches the expectation. read more

Every aspect of the dining experience was poor. I ordered a medium rear steak and when it came out, it needed ketchup. They brought out another that was still medium at best. The ribeyes were only about 5/8" thick and there were parts burnt. Their biggest expense has to be salt, as that was mostly all you could taste on the steak, Mac and cheese, and Salmon. Our server arrived 15 minutes after we sat to bring us water. We were never offered a second drink, never asked how the food was and never offered a to go box. The food arrived 51 minutes after we ordered. The worst part was the 22% gratuity automatically added. They added both $50 steaks. Then added the gratuity and then credited the over cooked steak so the gratuity was at least $10 more than it should have been. The servers were receiving their tip no matter what, so they didn't put any effort into offering service to match the prices charged. Primo is a long way from being able to charge the prices they are. There are too many other choices to waste your time and money here. read more

We had a wonderful culinary experience at the Primo Italian Steakhouse in downtown Middletown. We attended the Grand Opening party in May and had a fun time, but there was a lot going on and we wanted to experience a regular dinner without all the hoopla. We live in Austin, Texas and were back in town to celebrate our son's engagement. Everything was perfect! Frank the general manager started us off with a champagne toast to celebrate the fact that our soon-to-be daughter-in-law said yes. We were really hungry upon arrival anithd dove right into two appetizers, the half charcuterie board ($26) and the carpaccio ($26). The carpaccio is such a good dish because in addition to the wonderful meat pounded paper thin, Chef Katrina added light greens on top with capers, red onion and a honey-truffle vinaigrette. Normally I just want the meat, but the dressing on the salad pulls it together and really makes the dish special. For our second course we had salads and soup. Two thoughts on these items, you MUST try the Zuppa di Funghi e Cipolle ($16) and the Caesar dressing is simply one of the best I have ever tried. With the soup, think French onion soup with mushrooms on the bottom. Your mouth will thank you for getting some of it. After the salads Primo serves a palate cleanser, which is a sorbet with prosecco. You can properly eat it with a small spoon, or use a fork to mix it up a bit and then it is like a prosecco smoothie. I won't tell if you do it the second way. We decided to meld a pasta course with some protein and sampled four different pastas. If you like seafood, you HAVE to try the Bucatini Alla Carbonara Di Mare ($35). Don't be scared by the price, as with all Primo's pasta they are meant to be shared. This one could feed 3-4 people. There are sea scallops, shrimp, calamari and branzino (fish) on top. We also had the Tagliatelle All Bolognese ($24), the Gnocchi Pomodoro e Basilico ($21), the Ravioli Burro e Salvia ($26). All the pastas are made in-house from scratch. Primo imports about 80% of its ingredients from Italy according to Frank. The result is pasta that is very light and enjoyable to eat, you can eat a whole portion and not feel stuffed. My wife liked the ravioli best after the carbonara. She said the butternut squash and ricotta with butter and sage really meld well into a "decadent" flavor. It was a tough choice for me between the other two, because you notice the lightness of the pasta with the gnocchi that is like eating little pasta pillows, where the Bolognese sauce on the tagliatelle is the star. Along with the pastas we shared a 14 oz Ribeye ($69) and had the kitchen pre-slice it for us. Primo is the sister restaurant of Prime Steak and Seafood in Cincinnati. All the steaks in the family of restaurants are Prime Certified Angus Beef (CAB). CAB is a brand like Coke or Pepsi. The brand is high-end and delicious. There are seven steak choices and a pork chop available at Primo. Also under the entrées section you could have fish, chicken or veal. Last notes: Get the bread service. Homemade focaccia with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Try the desserts if you have room. I recommend the Crème Anglaise. You will love the hand-crafted water bottles from Venice. Good wine list and the cocktails list is endless. Try the Primotini for a starter, or one of their extensive choices of bourbon. Service is top notch. After being open for a while, they have worked out the bugs and Frank has a well-oiled (olive of course) crew that will made your night out a special one. Opening night at this restaurant will go down as one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. It took 10 minutes for someone to greet us, 40 minutes to get a bottle of wine, and another half hour to get our salads. When they arrived, there was so much dressing on my Caesar salad that when I pushed down on the lettuce, it congealed into a solid mass like papier-mâché. To our server's credit, she recognized the issue and brought me a new salad. A short time later entrées were brought out, but strangely two minutes after that, the server brought out a frozen sorbet palate cleanser *while we were eating our pasta*. Server checked on us later and I said the pasta was "fine". She sent the manager over to talk to us. He asked how it was and I told him it was OK but it's not bucatini pasta because it has no hole in it. His exact response was: "the stuff you buy in the store has a hole in it, but we make ours in house. I'll send the chef out to explain it to you" and he walked away. Now, I have a lot of experience eating pasta and I don't need it condescendingly explained me what the shapes are but "bucatini" literally means "tiny hole" in Italian. If there's no hole it's just fat spaghetti. Embarrassingly, the chef did come out to talk to us and explain that she makes the pasta and the dye they use for extruding it does have a hole in the middle but it's so tiny you may not notice it. It may seem a pedantic point to quibble over, but I love bucatini and was so disappointed that they advertised it as such when it wasn't. To pour salt on the wound, my wife's ravioli was so salty, she literally couldn't consume it. While our pasta was still on the table, the server laid down a bill and told us she would take it when we were ready. They didn't clear our plates or offer us coffee or dessert. To their credit, they had comped all the food for the evening because they noticed we didn't eat hardly any of it. I appreciate them comping the food, but I would've walked away happier if the manager had made some apologies, offered us free dessert, and invited us to come back again when they have their act together. Instead, we found him and the owner sitting outside on the patio holding court while we walked away, my last impression of him being smug, unapologetic, and condescending. Before I begin, I have to ask what is up with their water "glasses"? They are just about big enough to put a votive candle in. First thing I did was ask for a real glass of ice water, which came with a paper straw that I promptly removed. I ordered a gin and tonic and it was a ridiculous $13. It's a nice place, with a nice atmosphere (especially for Middletown) but when I tell a server how I want my steak cooked, I expect a steakhouse to cook it that way. I asked for medium, and got medium rare. Then I got to sit and wait while the other 4 people in my party ate their steaks. I ordered the pistachio dessert which was described as a cross between gelato and mousse. It turned out to eat like cheap ice cream full of ice crystals. Nobody in my group finished it. We had a great dining experience at Primo's. The food was excellent. We started with the Salumi e Formaggi (meat and cheese appetizer) which were very good. I had a Caesar salad which is probably the best Caesar I've ever had. My wife ordered the fillet mignon; I ordered the ribeye and both were cooked perfectly and well spiced. We ordered the Porchetta & Potatoes and Tagliatelle Alla Bolognese to share and both were very tasty. Frank served us and he was great. We had great conversations with him throughout our dinner. Afterwards, he introduced us to the owner, Nelson Castillo, and then gave us a tour of the attached speak easy (very cool and great bourbon selection) and the incredible stained glass factory next door. The historic building and decor are something to see. One caution... give yourself plenty of time. This is meant to be an Italian dining experience enjoyed over the course of two to three hours. read more

The General Manager, Zach Prusinski, made sure everything was to our liking, and that we were being taken care of very well. Nothing was exceptional here to be honest other than the bill. It was mediocre tasting food at fine dining prices. We started with the Cozze e Vongole; essentially mussels & clams in a butter white wine sauce. This is a hard one to mess up...but it was overly smokey, almost as if they used liquid smoke or something. I requested some bread for dipping, and I must say it was great bread, fresh & flavorful. Next I had the Burrata and my wife ordered a Caesar Salad. The salad was heavily heavily over dressed to the point where the romaine was heavy and almost wilted. The Burrata was one of the better dishes of the evening coupled with a tomato pesto, and arugula salad w/beets. There was a touch of sea salt on the salad that went well with the richness of the cheese. They mention the cauliflower is charred however a couple piece of mine seemed more off (blue/greenish) than charred. For our main courses we had a porterhouse steak and the Bucatini Alla Carbonara Di Mare. Interestingly for a 140$ steak it wasn't trimmed well at all, i.e. several bites of grizzle on the meat that they themselves cut for you prior to serving, the marbling was decent however there was nothing about this steak that would make me want to revisit this establishment. The Bucatini was a seafood dish with shrimp, scallops, and branzino fish. Each protein on the plate was overcooked in it own right. The scallops had a nice golden crust...however the texture of the scallop was sacrificed to achieve this. I can't say that I've ever been served a shrimp as over cooked as these were. They were almost rubbery, with a rind at the edge where they were deveined. The fish was overdone as well. It was quite obvious that we mostly just pushed the food around the plate due to the lack of flavor and overcooking...however they didn't care. Of course the waitress asked my wife how she liked the dish...with a mostly full plate still in front of her, she told her & that was that. Why even ask?? They served us a pretty neat Prosecco Italian ice pallet cleanser...meant to be serve prior to your main protein...yet it comically was served as we were already eating the main courses. All in all, this turned out to be a very disappointing meal. Thankfully I had wonderful company. read more

This restaurant is a hidden gem with very fine dining right here in our town. We both had pasta for dinner- Oh Wow! Prepared for old world taste! No heavy sauce and freshly made homemade pasta. It showed. The service was first class with 2 very knowledgeable friendly waitresses. The atmosphere is very charming in their restored elegant space. The owner checked personally on us twice and explained their approach to fresh preparation of the food. We highly recommend this fine establishment and will definitely return soon. read more

Giving a 2 star because the staff was very kind and the ambience was very nice, if it wasn't for that I would give it a negative 5. Overpriced and super salty. The salad had so much salt on it as well as my spaghetti and meatballs. They had no ketchup, mustard, mayo, only A1 and no ranch. Well done steak came out bloody. Steak was also super salty. Won't be going back. read more
