He has a highly experienced crew and is very knowledgeable and professional. His fees are very reasonable and he will do what he can to save you $$$$. Case in point he gave me an estimate today to repair some damage to my drivers side door. I had an estimate from another shop in San Rafael that I will not identify.?Their estimate was $2,200. Phillips estimate was $100. I could not help feeling both relief that I could have my car repaired without filing a claim and anger at the same time at the other supposedly reputable car repair shop. Went to this place and thought it was a good, honest and worthy mechanic shop as I started going there but then I started realizing Everytime I go there they mention I have something that needs to be fixed like my loose strut axle when at first there was no symptoms. Then they mention that I have oil leakage at my manifold upper intake. I talked to my uncle who is also a mechanic asked if I had any symptoms from the leak and I told him no because I felt, heard and saw none. I decided to look at the upper intake manifold myself and found out there was no leakage at all. They wanted to charge me $500 for replacing the gasket. My uncle said, they're trying to suck you dry of money. I'm now going to my uncle's house to get my car checked and going elsewhere to get oil change. Came here last October cuz major oil leak.. Was told the oil pan broke.. With the service also added major tune up .. After 3 months of used.. Major oil leaking again.. Why why why??? Return car to have it check again.. They said coolent hose wasn't changed at time. Of service.hmmm REALLY?? The car shake and stop n wasn't able to drive.. Messed up part of engine toooo!!! The shop is incapable of fixing cars.. Over the phone they said coolent won't be charge to us.. But upon pick up they try to give us a bill for $200 to my friend to pay.. These guys are super efficient, friendly, very affordable, and really helpful! I just took my 1988 van to them to check out my AC and I had them fix it because their accurate quote was too affordable to pass up. They had to order the parts to be delivered for my specific vehicle and they got the parts super fast and totally updated my AC system in just an hour or two! Definitely going to be going back to these studs whenever my van needs more maintenance or upgrades. So I went into this place blind and ignorant. This is a happy ending though, as I was very pleasantly surprised. I brought in my Audi A4 for a smog and because it needed some work and it wouldn't start and I needed to smog it. They did the work, no problem. What is more, because I was not able to pick up the car right away (and I told him to take his time because I was in the middle of a move and had no place to put my car) he held onto it for a while and didn't charge me extra storage fees or any of that nonsense. I called them 10:30 on a Friday and made an appointment to take my car in for an oil change at 11:30. They told me it would take 45 minutes so I went and got some lunch and came back 44 minutes later and they had just finished it out. Philip the manager was nice and polite, he just has an honest look to him. They also charged me $8 less than I had been quoted at the Penzzoil 10 minute oil change place. I recently bought a used car from this place. I have not even been able to drive it 200 miles . It leaks oil badly and drives horribly . I took the car back once thinking I could pay them to repair it. The engine was supposedly rebuilt before I bought it. i thought buying a car from a mechanic would be a good idea . All I can say is that Philip the guy who runs the place is such a sweet and nice, honest guy..he always check my 2 cars out and does extra stuff ..since I have no idea about car stuff.. for example he would put some oil or whatever and sometimes does not charge me ..I would drive in and he would stop and take care of my ..since it was a quick look...and he would look at a problem I have because I do take my cars to other places like Sears & Toscalito and they charge me alot more for what this place does...I recommend my son, friends and other people to try him out..they have been taking their car to him once they know what he does ...he will try to give you a good deal ...he let me store my car there once when I had to and also put money in the meter outside if he cannot..just all the little things that makes the difference. He gives me advice, I would tell him how much another mechanic or place charges and see what he can do for me and he usually come out pretty reasonable.. and make sure he checks out everything and if he does something wrong he would re-do it or whatever...he has been there a while now...this place was run by different people prior so I can say that he really does care and make sure it is done right. He is convenient,,..and sometimes he would give me a ride back to my place if I cannot find a ride while my car is in the shop...(within reason) he goes that extra mile for you..that is why I keep going there. ... read more

In December I brought my son's first car, a 15 year old Saab coupe for inspection. What we thought was amoderate power steering problem became a blown gasket and contaminated oil, a nasty job that costs a lot of money and takes significant time to repair. Phillip and his crew at Pro Auto were very reserved in their approach with us but completely honest throughout. We had them do the required work. Because it required the use of machine shop, we had a longer than normal waiting period but once the car was reassembled it ran better than it ever had. I've been going to Pro Auto Service for years. Phillip and crew are very competent mechanics and extremely fair. Most of the work I need is minor but they've done some medium-sized projects on our cars. Often I can just drop off the car without an appointment for oil changes. The shop is on 4th street so I just grab a coffee, lunch or make some work calls and the car is ready in less than an hour.
