A visiting friend wanted to recreate our first trip to Devon 10 years ago, when we first had our eyebrows threaded and henna done...we asked around when we got to Devon and were pointed to Great Cuts. I'll admit the name kind of threw me off but they are pretty much just as Rebecca S. described. We had a little bit of a wait but then a young lady came back to the shop and promptly started to work with us. She was patient with our requests and not only did henna for two adults but for a 4 year old. The single pattern up the ring finger on one hand was just enough for each of us. $7 per hand...$5 for eyebrows was too good of a buy to pass up. I'm not in the area often but I'd definitely go back! I just left the salon. I am so upset! LIVID and crying as I write this. Wish I could give them NO STARS Tomorrow my family has a large function at church so I took my mom here to get her upper lip threaded since she usually goes here and broke her foot so she can't get around well. I explained I wanted my eyebrows cleaned up only. No skinny brow no shaping. The woman said fine and repeated my words back to me. The first thread she used had me jump out of the chair. This is not my first time. I looked into the mirror to see my eyebrow (ala Brooke Sheilds) as it has been for 20 years hacked into a thin line. So if you want a thin eyebrow that is barely seen (like te lady in the shops) go here . thin line is all they know...but if you want what you want and eyebrows to suit your face go elsewhere... Anywhere else. So no family function for me no professional photos with my family during the already paid for photo session.... I'm searching for an attorney .... read more

Very very unprofessional salon whose workers care 0% about your treatment and 1000% about taking your money. I came here for the Japanese straightening treatment. This was my 3rd time doing it, and, as always, I am very nervous to get it done at new places. I called ahead to get more information, and the ladies there were very nice and explained the full treatment to me over the phone. The treatment took 3 hrs which is very standard. They explained to me how the products were herbal products and therefore did not cause excessive damage to my hair. However, during the 3 hrs I was there, the ladies kept complaining about how customers would come in and leave because they could find the same services elsewhere on Devon for cheaper (this is true). They told me how they used to be in downtown Chicago but then brought their "high quality products" to Devon. They were basically trying to reason with me that their products were better than elsewhere on Devon and so they were annoyed that they weren't getting business. The treatment I got included a straightening portion. In the past, the people doing the straightening take little bits of hair and really make sure every hair is straight. At this salon, she took big chunks of hair and straightened it in the same fashion I quickly straighten my hair 5 minutes before I have to go to work. I asked her to redo it a few times and touch up a few spots which she was more than happy to do so. I had asked her if she had experience doing this treatment, and she said several times--but now I am thinking that was probably a lie. People who have done this treatment several times should know that the straightening process should be done very carefully... After the treatment was over, the lady provided clear instructions for care and they did my eyebrows for free, which I will admit was nice. The eyebrow threading was good--I have a very defined shape for my eyebrows and they just did a cleaning, and I was happy with that. 1 week later... I waited 72 hrs (as is standard) before washing out my perm. The second time I washed my hair, so 1 week after my treatment, my hair returned to normal. I still had a huge kink and my bottom hairs were still curly--this was the whole reason I paid the $220--for them to fix my kink and curly bottom hairs! I called the salon telling them that my hair didn't change at all, and I sent pictures of how my hair hadn't changed. She told me to come in, and they would do it again. I don't have all the time in the world to commute to and from and sit at a salon for 3 hrs to get another treatment without a promise of it being successful. I asked for a refund which she agreed to. I was supposed to visit the salon. Later I texted and asked if I could just give my credit card number because the salon is far away from me, and I don't have much free time. She agreed. I called for a span of 4 days trying to give my credit card number for the refund, and they never picked up the phone. I called from my brother's phone, and they picked up right away AKA they were ignoring my calls. I explained how I am calling to give my credit card number for the refund, and they refused to refund me. They blamed my care (which is 100% not okay because I have expensive shampoo that is used specifically for this straight perm. I have had 2 treatments done before, so I am aware of how to take care of it). They said that I left the salon with straight hair and so it's not their fault----ummm, YOU BLOW DRIED MY HAIR STRAIGHT, that's why I left with straight hair. After going back and forth for 10 minutes, combatting their absurd reasons for not giving me a refund, she said she would talk to the stylist and get back to me in a half hour. 4 hours later, there was no phone call. I called the salon again. When they found out it was me, she put me on hold for 5 seconds and then hung up. They still don't answer my phone calls. This salon is very unprofessional and very greedy. I would advise people to not give them business until they shape up and realize what it takes to run a successful business--taking money for providing QUALITY services and admitting you're wrong when you are clearly wrong. read more

One more gem of a threading place on Devon Ave! This place doesn't have impressive decor or even a list of services... but damn they do a good job! So just FYI, ask about the price of the service you're looking for before you ask for it. The price is kind of negotiable or reduced if you're a pleasant client. Services offered: -Threading (see Ayesha's review if you don't know what that is) of facial hair: eyebrows, upper lip, chin, hair-line, you name it. -Waxing: eyebrows, face, bikini line, legs, under arms, again, you name it, they'll do it. -Ear piercing -Henna tattoos -Hair cuts -Hair styling -Hair coloring Services I purchased: Eyebrow threading (originally $10, then it was $5), upper lip threading (again $10, but $5 in the end), Brazilian bikini wax (originally $30, then it was $20). I paid $30 for all three services and was happy to leave a $10 tip. Pros: -A woman named Rania took good care of me :) She's quick with threading and waxing. It was less painful than any other experience I've had. -The ladies working there are quick and down to business. No muss no fuss. Walk-ins are welcome. -It's cheap! -It's very relaxed, we chatted about her kids during the waxing; no language barriers at all and she checked in with me multiple times to make sure I was getting exactly what I was looking for. -Their business card says they are members of The Chicago Cosmetologist Association and The National Cosmetologist Association, for what it's worth. Cons: -While this doesn't bother me one bit, I know some folks are about the whole experience at a salon, so: -The front decor with the salon chairs for hair cutting and the shampoo area are pretty cheap looking (though their chairs seem brand new and are super comfy to lay back and be threaded). -The back two waxing rooms are definitely how they can afford to give $20 bikini waxes! The waxing tables are lovely but, although it was obviously washed and bleached clean, the long white fabric covering it was kind of worn and had a few holes in it. So if the sight of a room vaguely reminiscent of a under-funded medical clinic makes you squeamish I wouldn't recommend it. -The name, Great Cuts, makes me think of the cheap-y "Great Clips" hair cut places, though I can tell you this place is not a franchise! -The ladies working there were taking numerous personal phone calls (albeit from their kids) during my time there. Bottom line: For a practical kind of gal like me it doesn't matter that the atmosphere sucks. I've been to Trim in Wicker Park, which specializes in "custom waxing" and it's pretty swanky (read: very pretty, a bit pricey and offers hard to find services like putting jewels on your waxed crotch) but I'd go Great Cuts any day over them because I got the same services for half the price and it took half the time! read more

I just got my nose pierced at Great Cuts yesterday. I am not of Indian descent so this was not for a wedding but simply because I wanted it. I had interviewed a few piercers but they just didn't feel right. A friend of mine mentioned that she had hers done on Devon but didn't remember the name of the place. So I wondered until I asked around and found Great Cuts. I forget her name but she was very sweet and it was quick and hardly painful at all. I'd rather have a sweet Indian woman piercing my nose than some surly hipster. This type of piercing has been done in their culture for thousands of years. For $45 I got my nose pierced and two beautiful studs. I'll probably go back for waxing soon too. read more

Went for a nose piercing. Most places charge a lot and take a long time. I have many piercings, I understand the risks and how to care for them so I just wanted it to be quick and safe. My piercer was all business, let me choose my jewelry, marked the piercing, and pierced. Dont go here if youre picky about having it done with a needle. I understand there are benefits to that, but the piercing gun worked just fine. Also dont go expecting the piercer to do a lot of talking. She really just did her job, I was in and out in 5 minutes. I got a cubic zirconia 2 mm stud in mine, overall it cost $25. Easy. Much cheaper than at a tattoo studio. read more

I went to get a wax. I found Great Cuts on Group On and figured I'd give it a chance. Paiker met me at the door, she was very friendly and polite! The establishment was nice and clean and Paiker was friendly and knowledgable as a cosmetologist. If I could give it a quarter star or no stars, I would. This place is a rip off. Tonight, I went to get mehndi done for eid. When we first walked in the manager Kauser said that the price for each hand was $7( either front or back, both would be 14). Despite the unreasonable price, we went in because it was starting to get busy and it is hard to find a place during chand rath. I had to wait over an hour to get my mehndi done, it was because one of the girls left- who I don't blame in this situation. When it was my turn, a lady was given my spot, despite her walking in after me. She was Friends with the manager Kauser. When I finally did get my mehndi done, I was going to get two sides done. And she asked me to pre pay $14. When the girl started my second hand she walked over looked at the simple design I picked out which was a flower in the middle and a plain few lines on the fingers. She said, " that is not a $7 design". What exactly is a 7 dollar design? It wasn't like the mehndi artist was a professional( again, this isn't a rating of her work) but honestly, it was nothing close to what I asked for. And since I already prepaid and there were a lot of customers gathering I didn't want to cause a scene and walked out. I would not recommend. She is a cheat and a liar. At least on the last day of Ramadan you shouldn't do this to people. I run a business know, and can relate to how it is trying to make most of the ending season. This is was just rude and misleading. And just out right cheating. Her Friend that got her hand done she got the design I asked for, even better, and I'm pretty sure she charged her less than what she charged me. If this is how you run your business. Good luck. The customers should get what they paid for and shouldn't be told last minute what is and isn't the "$7 design ". I used to come here back in like 08 and they would always perfectly clean my brows as well as keeping them how thick or thin I wanted them..but for about two years bow, every time I go back, I leave with my eyebrows looking like Nike. Ive been going here for 7 years but the last time I was there (was a week ago) was horrible and I am giving this place up for sure. It's never going to be as good as before. read more

Someone referred me to Great Cuts, I walked in and told them my problem, the three ladies (can't remember their names) served me right away and took out the nose ring for me without any hesitation.
