    Cod chowder, side of toast
    Tiffany T.

Worst fish and chips of my life. Ordered the British fish and chips $22, 6oz (small) cod chowder $8, a side of toasted bread $2, and additional sauces: chipotle aioli, basil aioli, mary rose, cilantro cream (all +$0.75). Total was $45 and this was shared between 2 people Don't let the fish size fool you. The fish was overly battered and overcooked. The actual fish piece was tiny.. the batter was hard and you could feel the oil sit in your mouth after eating. The chips were too potatoey, not crispy and they give you one piece of lemon for the huge piece of fish. The tartar sauce was okay, it needed more dill and vinegar in my opinion. It just tasted creamy, but it was the best sauce out of everything they had. The cod chowder was the best thing we ate, although it does not come with bacon so it's probably the cheapest thing to make. Clams did not taste fishy, and it was creamy in the best way! I would recommend this but would not line up or go out of my way solely to get this. Pass on the toasted bread. It's lightly buttered but there's nothing special to it. It's also on the thinner side. Chipotle aioli had a strong chipotle flavor, basil aioli tasted like pesto in the best way, mary rose was kind of a pink mayo moment, and the cilantro cream was creamy. Although all sauces were good, there was nothing special about any of them so I would not reorder. There's a self-serve water station inside, the service is good but it felt and smelled too oily inside so sitting outside is your best bet. They also sold out of onion rings on a Friday at 2:30pm, but I'm glad I didn't get them because they definitely would have been overcooked. Would never come back or recommend.

Fish and chips, toasted bread, 6oz cod chowder, and each of the sauces offered. 0/5 not good, don't recommend anything really

I have been wanting to eat here since I moved to Seattle 2 years ago, and I was extremely underwhelmed and disappointed when I finally got to try it today. We traveled to Bainbridge from Seattle just to eat here. The service was great and the staff were kind. But the food was bad. The fish was extremely battered and overcooked. They were too crunchy and hard. The fries were a mix of fresh/hot and stale/cold. They had the potential to be good if they were all fresh, but they weren't. The best thing we had was the cod chowder, but it also wasn't that special, it was just the only thing we could actually enjoy. The toasted bread was also cold and had no flavor. Also, they were sold out of onion rings at 3pm. We tried each of the sauces they offer, and they were all mid. I couldn't even say which one I liked the most because I didn't like any of them. Split between two people, we did not finish our order of one fish and chips, 6 oz chowder, and toasted bread. Even then, the food and oil sat heavily and made me feel pretty gross after eating this meal. The outdoor seating is the only good place to sit because it's extremely muggy and stuffy inside the shop. There are clean bathrooms and self serve water. This place is definitely overhyped and not worth the visit to Bainbridge for this meal. ESPECIALLY not worth the wait or the price, like $16 for a large piece of batter is wild!? Definitely do not recommend.

I heard about this place on social media a lot, so I made sure to come by during my trip to Seattle. The restaurant is very small with only a handful of tables inside and on the patio. It was packed when I went on a Friday afternoon, but we were lucky to snag a table. It took an hour between the time we ordered our food and the time we got it. They warned the group who ordered ahead of us that it would take that long, so we knew, but they did not tell us. Make sure if you plan to come here to budget a lot of time. We got 2 orders of the fish and chips and a small cup of cod chowder. The fish and chips were super good. Both were nice and crispy and had a lot of flavor. The cod chowder however was pretty bland. I'd definitely come back for the fish and chips but would skip the chowder next time.

Incredible and just like they had at the Nosh food truck. Great fish but I wish the restaurant was a little more. Restaurant is loud and unwelcoming to enjoy dinner. Service was kind. Order at the counter and they bring it to you when it's ready. Beer selection is meh with a few cans/bottles and 2 on tap options that are not great.

We came around peak lunch time and there was a line all the way out the door. Since there is limited seating we ordered the food to go. They take your phone number and reach out when the food is ready which is nice cause you can walk around town while you wait. After 45 minutes, we picked up our food right away but sadly it was already cold. We told them it was cold and they thankfully remade it for us. It turns out they forgot to text us so the food was sitting for awhile but I'm happy they remade it and gave us a discount. The food itself was delicious! Loved the fish and chip and the cod chowder.

Must visit when on the island. The portion size is huge. $22 for the fish and chips. The fish was fried perfectly and wasn't fishy at all. The service is good and the food comes out quick. It's a very chill vibe and self service on the water, utensils and hot sauces.

Can't go wrong with the British fish, comes with a hugeee piece if white fish on top of a bed of thick fries and a scoop of mashed peas. I highly recommend the pineapple mojito! Condiments and utensils are self serve around the back corner. Gets pretty crowded but service is fast.

Food and service were beyond expectations how far the best fried fish I've ever had The drinks were really great as well and the bartenders and servers were first class

I got the British fish and chips to go and it was very good. Take out had a service charge of 5% ($1.10), my order total was ~$25 and it took 20mins to make. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The place is small but there's also seating outside. I did notice the food safety rating was "needs to improve" and I didn't see it until after ordering so I still ate my meal but I was shocked to see that.

    Wild Bering Sea Cod Chowder

The wait was 45-60 minutes. The staff was very friendly and upbeat. The environment was very fast pace. I sat right at the kitchen so I was able to see all the action. I'm giving it 3 stars because honestly, I don't think the fish tacos and chowder were the best or worth the long wait. Nice to try once but I don't think I'll be back.

Glad I got to try this place during my visit to Bainbridge! Got the fish n chips and it was hot, fresh, and a good portion size. The fish was flaky with a thin fried coating. The mushy peas had a strong mint flavor, which I liked. Tasted like a fresh mint chutney. My friend got the chowder, which was made with cod that day, and it tasted great. Creamy without being too rich. Not fishy either. Friendly service, both counter and table. Cute and casual place inside with outdoor seating options as well. Bathroom inside the building.

Visited here on our trip to Bainbridge Island and it seems like this was highly recommended. Cod chowder (5/5): Perfect for a cold day. Still prefer the clam version, but this was perfectly seasoned and comforting. Fish and chips (5/5): fish and chips usually doesn't satisfy me, but holy crap this one was massive. Not only was it humongous, but it was also perfectly fried. The sauces were also great to experiment with. Overall this has got to be your go-to spot when visiting the island.

Piping hot and delicious cod chowder
    Shelley B.

My friend's husband recommended Proper Fish for fish and chips and I'm so glad he did. We heard it's supposed to be Seattle's top fish and chip restaurant so we had to try it. The restaurant itself was buzzing with two different dining rooms and an outdoor seating area as well. You place your order at the counter and they'll deliver the food when it's ready. We tried the fish and chips and the soup of the day which was cod chowder. This soup was perfectly seasoned and tasted just like the New England style clam chowder I know and love. It was thick (but not too thick) and packed with delicious flavor. The fish and chips - which was perfectly battered and fried - came out piping hot, was generous in size and large enough to share between two of us. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and look forward to coming back again and eating outside in warmer weather.

HI LIFE is an exception, and will be a go-to going forward. The Poke sho-ka-do box is a great option for open minded first-timers. It's a huge amount of food, easily satisfying two and giving you a nice sense of the variety of fish and marinades on offer. Note that it's a fixed set, so you'll likely end up with some marinades/fish you prefer over others. The mayo-base poke wasn't my jam, but that's personal preference. One note, it'd be nice if the box included rice. it's available for $3 extra, which feels trivial. As for dining environs, it's located in a refurbished service station. There's limited indoor seating by the service counter, but most tables are under the overhang where gas pumps would have once been. I'd go at a slightly off-time if possible to ensure you get a seat! I'm giving this grocery store/restaurant 5 stars because it merits more than just a 4-star 'Good'…read morerating. If Yelp allowed it I'd give it a 4.5. Our son's been wanting to take us here for a long time and chose this, our first visit, as his wedding anniversary gift to us, his very dear and suffocatingly loving parents. The first thing that struck us were the variety of Italian foods and ingredients for sale in the grocery part of the restaurant. I bought the Garlic Scape Pesto because I've never had that type of pesto sauce so, why not? The staff at the front counter, who also doubled as hosts and wait staff, were very friendly. We arrived early for our reservation and only had a short wait before being seated at our table. We sat in the larger, outdoor section that was inside a tent. Our table offered great views of the outside and of the restaurant interior. I'm not sure why but when our son called in our reservation we had to pre-order our dishes and he had to pay for it then. The benefit of this was that after we were seated our orders came to our table within 10 minutes. We ordered the Vr11 Caesar Salad (which came with lemon-infused croutons!), two wood-fired pizzas and the Eggplant Parmigiana. The Caesar Salad appeared modest but when eating it, the lemon-infused croutons gave it a wow factor. My pizza was the Pizza Calabrese with two types of spicy Calabrian sausage, a Tropea Onion Jam, scarmozza (smoked mozzarella cheese, roast red peppers and grana padano. I didn't really get the smokiness in the cheese nor did the sausage chunks on pizza taste that spicy. But the clear star of the show was that Tropea Onion Jam which WAS spicy because I think 'NDuja sausage was mixed in with it. THERE was the heat I was looking for within a huge burst of flavor. That jam alone made the pizza. Our son loved his Pizza Carbonara ("It was amazing!") with the large dollops of stracciatella cheese with cured egg yolk, and curled guanchiale (pork jowl). This was our first tasting of guanchiale (our son graciously let me sample his pizza) and it was good. It was more like sliced pancetta and it was good. He loved his pizza but I tell ya, mine with that onion jam had already won me over. How much did my wife enjoy her Eggplant Parmigiana (which she also let me sample)? My wife usually doesn't finish her restaurant entrees. She finished this one. Nice marinara sauce flavors mixed with grated Grana Padano cheese and tender sliced grilled eggplant. I didn't pick up any grilled flavor from the eggplant but the dish was delicious. This was our son's second visit and we'd like to return for his third and our second. Both the grocery and restaurant are definite winners.

We ordered the margherita pizza, the funghi e tartufo, the hot lovers pasta with shrimp (level 3 spice), the spinach ravioli. Everything was delicious. My personal favorite was the mushroom pizza and the hot lovers pasta. The pasta definitely had a kick to it for level 3. The shrimp could have been replaced with alternative meat option because it didn't absorb the sauce like I would have liked it to. The ravioli was done well. The margherita was very tasty. They gave bread with the pasta but it was just super bland and there was no olive oil or butter with it. Overall, decent place to come and get a quick, filling meal. Stopped in for a bite of dinner after we were torn between another local pub (near Safeway) or here. We both had such fond memories of Docs and that led us to our choice. Got seated quickly but it took kinda forever to get even water delivered much less a drink order placed. We decided to make our dinner order too because of the drink delay. Hubby was too happy that they had his fav beer - black butte porter -available so her ordered that. My Chardonnay was from WA which is not my fav but it was a choice of $11/glass or $20/glass for an overpriced, under-tasting CA option. Our dinner came almost too quickly. 3 piece fish and chips. First impression: wow, that's hardly any fries. Second impression: wow, how long have these been sitting out. You can always depend on Docs fries to be amazing but not this time. They were limp, soggy and just about inedible. We did let our waiter know and he did reorder us a batch but they came almost at the end of our dinner tho. BUT these were the fries we rave about at Docs... hot, crispy, real potatoes. Yum! Now the fish: the cod itself was perfect. Thick, fresh, hot, moist but I don't know what this 'crusting' is. It's like it's been rolled in seasoned cracker crumbs then fried sure it's crispy but it's like it's encased in edible armor. Not a fan. The batter they used to have was so superior to this. I was disappointed to be honest. Upon paying and leaving hubby says: well, we won't do that again. It's too bad because it was such a regular hangout for us with my folks who just about everyone knew by name. It's also my first time back since they passed (2021) so I really was missing them. Not the same on many levels. Even the crack sauce wasn't 'right.' I've never left any behind in the cup before...I did this time.

They didn't have enough menus for those they seat. We were initially provided one to share with apologies. Later they brought us another one. For a restaurant with these prices we would think they'd have enough menus printed for patrons. When we started to order we learned they were out of the house made bread and the marinated olives and toasted almonds. Our reservation was pretty early in the evening so, similarly to Seabird, we were dumbfounded how items like this were already not planned for well nor available with a small menu. We didn't want any other starter so moved along. I ordered the country steak bavette steak going against the risk from other reviews, but I really wanted steak. The steak was cooked med rare like requested. The steak itself was okay. The interesting part was the spread of green sauce and other did not add any flavor to the experience. It could not have been there and same difference. I can't say I'd order again. The Agate Burger was kind of dry and I would not order that again. Someone else had undercooked. Ours seemed over cooked. Like pizza, burgers are one of those items that I'm always shocked when it's not basic enjoyable. When you've made basic and delicious burgers at home, you know it would take extra work to make it unsatisfying. Everyone loves a grilled burger. Ling cod and prawns - Ling Cod was cooked REALLY well, but the overall dish lacked flavor and left you again unsatisfied. We asked to see the dessert menu (of which we were given 1), but even though it was my birthday we made the decision to skip dessert. We enjoyed dessert at home. Others seemed to have different experiences so you can decide, but it's not a cheap gamble. It was hard to ignore the glaring chipped wall right next to our table. I'm not really sure how I feel about the ambiance. Seems like a small thing, but the candle wasn't lit. Had to ask for a light. It wouldn't. Had to ask for another one to be brought. We tried really hard to improve our experience from all angles possible lol Parking - private lot. The museum is closed so you should easily find a spot.
