The BEST fish & chips in Seattle confirmed. I've heard so many things about Proper Fish and had to make the trip out to Bainbridge Island to see for myself. We got the British Fish & Chips, Baby Gem Lettuce Caesar, and Chowder. The fish was WOW. Great batter that stayed crispy. A HUGE fresh cut of cod. Thick cut fries that were perfect in every way. Safe to say my mind was blown. Hands down the best fish & chips. Everything else we ordered was just ok. Stick with the fish & chips.
We were headed to the water for a lunch view but saw this place in a whim & stopped in. It was packed inside & out! The fish & chips were tasty. I enjoyed the fresh Alaskan fish. The fries were just ok. It's served with a dollop of puréed peas that my husband tasted & said it had a sage flavor. My husband ordered the lobster roll which was stuffed full of lobster. He subbed a salad for fries that was fresh. I also ordered a peach bourbon smash. It was so good. I was kind of knocking because of the size but the taste factor totally made up for it. The place is very small with limited seating but we were able to sit at the bar & watch these amazing cooks in action. I took pics of the sandwiches & tacos as they were being made. I would definitely order one of these next time! Happy Eating!
During peak times, the wait is over an hour to get your food. You may stand in line for about 20-30 minutes, and once you pay, you get your food in about 40 minutes. Be prepared to wait. The fish and chips were... proper! Batter was fantastic and the fish and . The fries were great. Well season and crispy, but with a nice chew. For the price and large portion, I'd say it's not bad! Recommend going with a friend to grab a table and someone else order so you have a spot to eat. Great place for fish and chips!
My favorite meal in Seattle!! If you're in Bainbridge you have to stop in. Line was fairly short, but food took ~30 mins to come out. The fish & chips were soooo good. Crispy, flakey, salty. Fish sandwich was also good, but I preferred the fish & chips.
We recently dined at Proper Fish on a busy Saturday for an early dinner. As expected, the line was long. When we got to the cashier, she told us it would take about an hour for our food. There are several tables inside and outside that are casually up for grabs. We didn't have to wait long to get a really good corner table in the back near the self-serve water station which nicely offers a carafe filled with ice water with lemon and another one without lemon. After less than an hour, as promised, our food came out fresh and steaming hot. I don't know if I'm just lucky or not super picky, but I thought our food looked amazing and tasted delicious! Our fish was juicy and perfectly cooked. It was the similar long fillet size that I remember having when I visited England. A nice touch is the fish and chips are laid on top of newspaper printed food safe parchment paper. The servers were friendly and helpful. They gave us a generous amount of hand-cut fries and just the right amount of minty mushy peas and tartar sauce. Of course, I doused my fish with a generous amount of malt vinegar the way I like it, and voilà, I was transported back to jolly old England! In my humble opinion, Proper Fish is a must place to dine when you're visiting Bainbridge Island. Then, a great idea is to walk the wonderful calories off and fight off the impending food coma by perusing the various cute shops and small businesses in their charming Downtown. If you want a longer walk and photo op, walk about 25 minutes from Proper Fish to see the large, cool wooden art installation "Pia The Peacekeeper Troll" in Sakai Park.
My friends and I recently checked out Proper Fish during a visit to Bainbridge Island. We weren't super hungry so between the four of us, we only shared a single order of their fish and chips and a cup of clam chowder. After placing our order, our food was quickly prepared. Although I didn't set a timer, I would estimate it only took five minutes for our food to come out. Impressive, considering we were dining at 12:00 p.m. right as the lunch rush was coming through. The battered fish is fried well -- crispy and not oily, but the batter was a bit thick, and the fish was overcooked and didn't flake apart the way a tender piece of fish does when it's delicately prepared. I appreciate that the outside of the fish is generously salted. In addition to the tartar sauce and wedges of lemon that are included, there is also malt vinegar available at the table. While the fish was dry, everything else that was included in the entree was not bad. In fact, I really enjoyed the flavor and texture of mushy peas, and the thick cut fries were very crispy. My other notable criticism is around two key items: the disappointing chowder and the general cleanliness -- of lack thereof, of the restaurant. All four members of my party tried out the chowder and we all agreed that it was incredibly bland. The chowder lacked both salt and flavor, and tasted like hot, boiled cream. Regarding cleanliness, a few of us received cutlery that wasn't clean, and there were actually a few ants crawling on the table inside as well. Some other Yelpers have brought this up in their reviews, but Proper Fish unfortunately does not have the best track record when it comes to health inspections. Do what you will with this information, but this does not instill confidence that you'll make it out of this experience unscarred.
Food was beyond expectation! Fish had perfect batter to fish ratio, crispy and perfectly seasoned. The fries were crispy and hand cut, fried golden, and was served with tartar sauce and minty mushy peas. 10/10 Service was excellent, the bartender was very kind and welcoming as this was our first time. We loved how clean the restaurant was and how the water, utensils and to go bags were self serve. Loved it overall and will be back again.
First, it's extremely disappointing that adults aren't allowed to order the half size of fish and chips. It's a complete waste of food and resources to force people to buy the massive portion. Not everyone eats massive portions of food. That alone is reason for a one-star review. Second, the food was so bland. It was caked in way too much batter and very crispy, but the inside was almost mushy and flavorless. I maybe ate 1/4 of it. Not good. The chips were almost all burnt to a crisp. I had like five of them. Complete waste of money.
Weekends at Proper Fish are bananas and for good reason. This place is hands down the best fish and chips in the state. Hell it might be the best in the country. It is a true nod to the proper British entree. We arrived when the line was relatively short but within 20 min it was wrapped around the corner nearly. Rest assured the line moved fast but it's still shocking to see. The entire restaurant is first come first serve seating so plan ahead or consider a picnic approach. We ordered and headed across the street to a table under a gazebo. From order to pick up the wait was roughly 25 on a Saturday at 11am- ish but it was packed with standing room only. We ordered the fish and chips, prawn & lobster cocktail, and the caesar salad. Everything was marvelous! I can't wait to go back again.
Worst fish and chips of my life. Ordered the British fish and chips $22, 6oz (small) cod chowder $8, a side of toasted bread $2, and additional sauces: chipotle aioli, basil aioli, mary rose, cilantro cream (all +$0.75). Total was $45 and this was shared between 2 people Don't let the fish size fool you. The fish was overly battered and overcooked. The actual fish piece was tiny.. the batter was hard and you could feel the oil sit in your mouth after eating. The chips were too potatoey, not crispy and they give you one piece of lemon for the huge piece of fish. The tartar sauce was okay, it needed more dill and vinegar in my opinion. It just tasted creamy, but it was the best sauce out of everything they had. The cod chowder was the best thing we ate, although it does not come with bacon so it's probably the cheapest thing to make. Clams did not taste fishy, and it was creamy in the best way! I would recommend this but would not line up or go out of my way solely to get this. Pass on the toasted bread. It's lightly buttered but there's nothing special to it. It's also on the thinner side. Chipotle aioli had a strong chipotle flavor, basil aioli tasted like pesto in the best way, mary rose was kind of a pink mayo moment, and the cilantro cream was creamy. Although all sauces were good, there was nothing special about any of them so I would not reorder. There's a self-serve water station inside, the service is good but it felt and smelled too oily inside so sitting outside is your best bet. They also sold out of onion rings on a Friday at 2:30pm, but I'm glad I didn't get them because they definitely would have been overcooked. Would never come back or recommend.
I have been wanting to eat here since I moved to Seattle 2 years ago, and I was extremely underwhelmed and disappointed when I finally got to try it today. We traveled to Bainbridge from Seattle just to eat here. The service was great and the staff were kind. But the food was bad. The fish was extremely battered and overcooked. They were too crunchy and hard. The fries were a mix of fresh/hot and stale/cold. They had the potential to be good if they were all fresh, but they weren't. The best thing we had was the cod chowder, but it also wasn't that special, it was just the only thing we could actually enjoy. The toasted bread was also cold and had no flavor. Also, they were sold out of onion rings at 3pm. We tried each of the sauces they offer, and they were all mid. I couldn't even say which one I liked the most because I didn't like any of them. Split between two people, we did not finish our order of one fish and chips, 6 oz chowder, and toasted bread. Even then, the food and oil sat heavily and made me feel pretty gross after eating this meal. The outdoor seating is the only good place to sit because it's extremely muggy and stuffy inside the shop. There are clean bathrooms and self serve water. This place is definitely overhyped and not worth the visit to Bainbridge for this meal. ESPECIALLY not worth the wait or the price, like $16 for a large piece of batter is wild!? Definitely do not recommend.
I heard about this place on social media a lot, so I made sure to come by during my trip to Seattle. The restaurant is very small with only a handful of tables inside and on the patio. It was packed when I went on a Friday afternoon, but we were lucky to snag a table. It took an hour between the time we ordered our food and the time we got it. They warned the group who ordered ahead of us that it would take that long, so we knew, but they did not tell us. Make sure if you plan to come here to budget a lot of time. We got 2 orders of the fish and chips and a small cup of cod chowder. The fish and chips were super good. Both were nice and crispy and had a lot of flavor. The cod chowder however was pretty bland. I'd definitely come back for the fish and chips but would skip the chowder next time.
This was our third time visiting, and we ordered almost everything on the menu! I really love most of the dishes, and we've had a great experience overall. The only dish I wasn't a big fan of was the lobster. For the price, I felt the portion was quite small, and I didn't realize it would be served cold. Other than that, we really enjoyed the food and will definitely be back!
It was such a beautiful day at Bainbridge Island, after taking the ferry my husband and I were met with his friend. He asked where we wanted to go and after checking out some Tiktok suggestions I decided that we were going to have an early dinner at Proper Fish. Proper Fish can get proper busy, you order your food at the register and find seats either inside their main restaurant, the bar or outside. We were lucky enough to get seats outside, we were so thankful that it wasn't rainy but it was still pretty chilly. My husband and his friend order the British fish and chips while my husband ordered fried oysters, I also ordered the chowder. We got our number and put it on the table and our food came out pretty fast. The chowder was exactly what I needed to stay warm, it was so delicious and creamy and filled with so much cod. When the fish and chips came out I was absolutely shocked with how huge my fillet was, it was crispy and flaky and still so moist and it was so tender. The fish was so delicious and the chips were big and fluffy on the inside. I typically don't like minty peas, I've had some in the UK and was not fan but these were actually really good. Now the oysters, I am not a fan but my husband really liked it. I just thought it was too wet lol. Please please please come and check them out. read more

The restaurant is a little small and staff is very friendly. Ordered the fish and chips and clam chowder. -fish and chips: came out hot and was so tasty, the portion is generous. you can definitely split between two people and leave full. fish was crispy but light, it wasn't oily at all. pea mash complimented the fish and was refreshing. the fries were thick and very filling -clam chowder: delicious and very warming, perfect for when it's cold and raining. I enjoyed eating this with the oyster crackers added on top for some extra texture read more

Fish was pretty darn good, chowder was more "meh". Huge portion of fish though! We shared one piece since we'd been stuffing ourselves all day. Not a lot of indoor seating, but plenty of outdoor seats for a warm day. Quick service! read more

Proper fish was incredible. Everyone inside the restaurant is so nice and welcoming. That enough makes me want to come back again. There was a semi-long line but our food came out in 15-20 minutes. Not too bad considering how much food we ordered. Everything came out nice and fresh. The fish was also huge! It was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I was surprised how small the building looked and still had plenty of seating. However, the weather was nice outside and it helped cool down the food a bit by being in the nice crisp air. Sooooo good! Waited in line for 20-30 min. Waited exactly an hour for the food which is how long staff said it would take. But all of the staff were so nice and moving so fast. Well worth the wait, best fish and chips I've ever had and the tartar sauce and fries were good too. Chipotle and cilantro sauces were really good too. You could share one plate with two people. Cod chowder was okay honestly, a little bland and could use more salt, but I did like the cod in there! The potatoes in the chowder were giant chunks and too hard. I've never tried mushy peas, but these were good, very minty. Wanted to try the onion rings but they were out by 2pm. Super crowded inside obviously, there's very limited seating and it's hot inside but there's a nice park across the street. It's at the very end of the downtown street, I'd recommend going immediately down there and walking around downtown while you wait. read more
Excellent fish and chips in a comfortable setting with friendly service. The portion was generous, the fish hot, the batter crunchy and the mashed peas a delicious and unexpected touch. The tartar sauce was delicious as well. For me definitely worth the trip from Seattle. I'll be back! read more

I've been recommended Proper Fish before for fish & chips, for good reason. Solid spot somewhat close to the ferry, a good spot grab a bite after exploring shops. While I don't think it's a must try, I do think food matched expectations and a good fried fish typically hits the spot. British Fish & Chips - served with mushy peas, which I totally thought was guac, they're a refreshingly minty supplement. I'm not a total fan, but they're there. Fries were tasty, a good chunk of potato with lighter breading. Fish was huge! Served piping hot, the fish was soft. Tartar sauce was interestingly like a potato salad mixture but tasty. read more

Delicious fish! We travelled over to Bainbridge while in town for business and wanted to check out the ferry (which was so cool and would highly recommend doing!) We heard great things about Proper Fish, and it did not disappoint. We both got the fish and chips and it was delicious. A huge piece of cod served with fresh fries and mashed peas.... Yum! You order at the counter and take a seat in either the restaurant or the bar area & they bring it to you. The staff was very nice! We throughly enjoyed our meal here and would highly recommend stopping here for fish if you're in Bainbridge. Enjoy! read more
Well done proper fish, not only have you brought your restaurant back up to the standard we've loved since you were a food truck (yes I know ownership changed and it took a minute to get back to it) But the service was quick without feeling rushed, they themselves found us a table (in the new bar area, its 18+ but they were nice enough to let our 16 through) The food was perfect, crispy yet moist fish that was bigger than the basket, lots of their glorious fries and a scoop of mushy minty peas (really wish I got more of this its just that good) Love it will be back as always! read more

Ok. I've heard a lot about this place but had never been. Hubby and I had to pick something up on BI so I treated him for lunch. Sunday, in the off season for lunch, the bar was empty. Pro tip if you are 18+. The actual dining room was crowded with lots of families with kids. We watched the Steelers get creamed on the TV in peaceful quiet. Ok I'm a big fan of properly executed F&C. I would say this was it. Was it 'the best fish & chips I've ever eaten' like some reviewers have said. Not in my opinion but it was quite good. The slab of fish that shows up was impressive. Hubby and I shared. One thing that's different is that you get a real 'meaty' piece of fish. Not some rinky lil strip. We also ordered the O rings since we were sharing lunch. Now, these were panko crispy but no SOOO crispy that you ripped up the roof of your mouth biting in. Onions were good and thick and their tartar is spectacular! Now negatives...I found the fries too salty. It appears that the fish gets sprinkled with a finish of salt and, if that's so, it also winds up on the fries and that was too much. I did find the fish crust a wee bit soggy which I wasn't expecting from the reviews. That was disappointing but it's how most F&C is. Prices were a little high...$60 for a lunch that we split (yes there was ONE wine and ONE beer involved). But everything is expensive which makes me glad I'm a chef. I'd give it 4.5 stars but since I can't do that it gets a proper 4. Cheers! read more

Worth the adventure but will keep in mind to visit on a weekday. In a Saturday line to order was about 20 min, then wait for food was about 30 min. Time to view the menu for sure! You order, they give your number, you sit and wait. Dining room is farely small, but people are constantly in rotation of leaving. You will also find outside seating pretty quick also. There is a bar area, a little snug but kills some time while waiting for your food. We tried a bit of everything. Fish is meaty, cod soup was good, lobster roll also packed with meat m. The only thing I did not enjoy was their fried oysters. It was paired with this basil dip that was better than the fried oysters in my opinion. Take the trip to Bainbridge Island! read more

This was a great meal. There is very limited seating in their main restaurant, but there is additional seating in the bar area. The fish was super tender and fried to perfection. It was a very large portion. The mushy peas were something fun and new to try. The food came out much quicker than we were told it would take. The cod chowder was also something new I've never had. Tastes pretty similar to normal chowder but flakier meat. I would come back again. read more

Proper Fish is one of those true masters of fish and chips; they really have The Craft down. This version has a Northwest twist, which is still great overall, especially with the mushy peas served with the fish and chips--that was the best choice. You don't see that anywhere else, and this place has moved into one of my new top five fish-and-chip joints. No need to explain what I already ordered; we just happened to come here on a random trip. Figured we'd check it out before we catch the ferry to Seattle, stop over here at Proper Fish. Next time, I want to ask for mushy peas because I like my veggies. I know most people don't like veggies, I get it--I need a little more of those mushy peas. read more
The restaurant is pretty crammed and tiny. On a nice summer day they have a small patio. You can expect to wait in line for a while before placing your order. You place your order at a counter and then just wait. The fish and chips are some of the best in the area. It's similar to what you can get in London! The fish tacos are pretty good, with fried potato straws on top. Worth checking out if you have time to kill and aren't in a super hurry. read more

The wait was 45-60 minutes. The staff was very friendly and upbeat. The environment was very fast pace. I sat right at the kitchen so I was able to see all the action. I'm giving it 3 stars because honestly, I don't think the fish tacos and chowder were the best or worth the long wait. Nice to try once but I don't think I'll be back. read more

We were very satisfied with our meal at Proper Fish. As tourists just passing through, we struck gold finding this gem. The fish and chips are worth every penny! Perfectly battered, not too heavy, hot and crisp. The fish itself was flaky and moist. The lobster roll was described as the best I have ever had by another member in our party. Pricey but also worth the cost. The servers were friendly and attentive. The restaurant itself is small and can only seat 22 so be prepared to wait if you have a larger party. There are only two larger tables in the back. read more

We got there near opening time and was able to grab a table before there was a HUGE line! The wait for the food was long but the portion was absolutely worth it!!! Crispy & satisfying~ The island was small and with huge traffic though so seating could be a big problem (too oily/hectic in terms of smell inside but too crowded with people waiting outside) yet I think still very much worth trying! read more
Great food and service! We came on a Monday for lunch so thankfully it wasn't too crowded, but there were plenty of other people there. My sister and I shared one order of the British fish and chips and it was the perfect lunch portion for us, especially since we were just visiting for the weekend and wanted to try other places in Seattle. Even though we shared, we were still very full when we left! The fish was flaky and crispy and the fries were great as well. I liked the tartar sauce and we also tried the chipotle aioli. Neither one of us was brave enough to try the mushy peas. We sat outside on the patio, but there are a few tables inside as well. The bathroom is a bit tricky to find but there are lots of signs. read more

What a delight to have "proper" fish and chips for a little field trip to Bainbridge. I actually love mushy peas and it is so hard to find one that is authentic. They definitely nailed it. The fish was done right as well. Flaky fillet inside the medium batter. My son had the oysters and it was surprisingly good. The fries were not as crispy as I hope for but they were still solid. Loved the British fish and chips. Huge portion for $22!! So definitely for sharing. The cod chowder that day was nothing special. Check if it's clam chowder or not. If it's cod chowder, then skip it! Not worth $10. The chipotle sauce was good. They have a separate bar area which looked welcoming. read more
Came here after seeing a post on TikTok. Here, you will need to stand on line to place and pay your order before you get a number to place on your table you need to find yourself. You can grab your own utensils and water inside the shop. We ordered a fish and chips and fish tacos to share between 2 people. This is definitely a good portion for two to share. The fish tacos were good but a bit bland. The fish and chips were mediocre. While the fish tasted great with the tartar sauce, the chips were a bit undercooked. Was a great experience but would rather try another place on Bainbridge Island. read more
British Fish & Chips: The fish was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. We got a good portion of fish. The breading was not too thick on the fish. However, the chips (fries) were just okay. You start by ordering at the counter, and then it's up to you to find a table. After you order, they give you a table stand with your order number. When your food is ready, a server will search the restaurant, calling your number until they find you. There is both indoor and outdoors seating, and all of it was full when we ordered. We found ourselves standing in a corner scouting the room, and as soon as we saw a party stand up we rushed to claim their table. Overall: nice to look at food, pretty mediocre eats. The fish: the batter had a donut-y sweetness to it which was a little unusual. I kind of liked it, but definitely haven't experienced that with fish before. The fish itself, cod, was fine--not much flavor but that's cod. The tartar sauce was a standout: obviously homemade with a great lemon flavor. The fries: these tasted like they had been sitting under a heat lamp for quite a while. Warm but not crispy (except the tiny bits). Considering that there was an almost continuous flow of English fish and chips coming out of the kitchen and they were super busy, it's bizarre the fries weren't fresh. Almost flavorless. Cod chowder: I honestly couldn't tell which chunks were cod and which were potato. Super bland. read more
This is a cosy casual eatery with outdoor and indoor seating. Indoor was pretty warm and stuffy even on a mild weather day. They had fans running but it still smelled of fried fish. We opted to sit outdoors but had to wipe down our seats and table from the recent rain. I wish they had outdoor heaters because it was chilly in the shade. Order at the counter then take your number to your table of choice. Food comes out pretty quick. The fish was delicious, with great light and crispy batter, not too greasy. The tableside malt vinegar really enhanced the flavor. The tacos were a good size and had a solid serving of fish, but I felt they were a bit lacking in sauce. The crispy potato straws on top provided a nice extra crunch. A rush of people arrived shortly after we did, so our table service became a bit spotty. We were able to flag down a waitress to bring our cannoli, and it was nice that she thought to put it in a to-go box. read more
The restaurant is pretty small and stuffy inside. But I love the decor inside, even historical news about the place. And the menus were formatted like newspaper, so cute!! There's lots of outdoor seating! The service was nothing special, they weren't rude nor friendly. Just causal, normal "what would you like" and "would you like a receipt?" The wait for our food wasn't too bad, around 7 to 10 minutes. The portion size is HUGE!! I couldn't believe it! The fish was as long as my forearm. We got three of the Fish and Chips. Only one of us could finish the box. Everything was fresh, hot, and crispy! There was not enough tartar sauce for all of the food in my opinion. And definitely squeeze the lemon on the fish, made all the difference! I will definitely come back and highly recommend you check it out if you're nearby! And either come with an empty stomach or company to share the box with. read more
Saw a lot of this place on my socials after my algorithm was completely dominated by Seattle food recommendations. Even overheard a cashier recommending this place to the people in front of us in a bookstore. But for some reason, my gut feeling kept me cautious, so when we made it here we decided to split the $33 lobster roll instead of ordering our own plates. And my dubious gut protected my wallet. The lobster roll wasn't necessarily undersized, but it's not what I would call generous either. It was a notch below satisfaction size. The lobster on it was good, but the dressing lacked any flavor or spice. The fries were over fried to being kind of a dry crunch rather than a crisp crunch. read more

This is by far the best food I had when I visited Seattle. Enrique's hospitality was incredible. His positive attitude was contagious. The portions are huge and well worth the price. The fish was so crispy and full of flavor. Would fly out just to grab a bite of this delicious food. I highly recommend ordering the soup, it had the perfect amount of seasoning, and warmed you right up for the cold weather. read more

Lived up to the hype! Line moved fast but extra wait for the food - totally worth it! Enjoyed a beer while we waited. Our fave was the British fish (no chips) and prawn/crab appetizer! Mushy peas were really good too! Chowder was good but maybe not a stand out. Glad we tried everything!! read more
Should've seen my face when they put a fish the length of my arm in front of me. Thought there was no way I was finishing that. I did, and it was amazing. The breading to meat ratio was perfect and the fish had a solid flakiness and was not dry at all. The quality of the fish tacos rivaled those of Southern California for sure. read more
Whenever I bring up Bainbridge restaurants, I always hear about Proper Fish. People really love this place for their huge fish and chips; definitely a feast for the eyes! I've been a couple of times now, getting the fried oysters and the lobster roll, and both times for me it was okay; it just didn't have a lot of flavor. The lobster roll is small for the price. I was visiting Bainbridge island and I knew that I wanted to try fish and chips, and this establishment came highly recommended on yelp. The restaurant is cute with both indoor and outdoor seating. You place your order at the counter and you find your own table. The cashier was friendly. The fish and chips portion size was huge and can easily feed two people. The fish was well seasoned and the batter was crispy and flavorful. The fries were sub par and didn't have much flavor or crunch. The mushy peas complemented the fried food well, and had a nice hint of mint. The fried oysters were ginormous! The batter was different than the fish batter, but it was also well seasoned and crispy. The oysters themselves tasted quite fresh and were fried perfectly. The onion rings were pretty standard, but the portion size was also quite generous. My diagnosis: this is must visit restaurant for fish and chips on Bainbridge Island.
