After our 2 hr trip to get there we ordered fish and chips the fish was ok to good, the fries were the worst fries I have ever had. I don't even know how to explain them oil saturated, but still raw also. As we were leaving we noticed every table waiting to be cleared had heaps of fries left. Had a nice little stop-in to Proper Fish while running away from the rain during a day trip to Bainbridge. Its setting was overall casual and the atmosphere was pretty calm. Came to check out their claim to be Seattle's best fish and chips. Located on a busy block with unfortunately only street parking ( that we know of). There's bunch of tables for outside dining in addition to inside. There were 4 steps down into the restaurant so we had to carry our stroller down which was kind of tricky. When inside, you give your order to the friendly staff, pay and snag a table. We came around 2:30 so we were able to get a table. Food- we got the fish and chips which came with mushy peas and tartar sauce. The fish was a pretty big strip-battered and fried. It was very moist and flaky and came out fresh out of the fryer. Yes, it was one of the best fish we've had, even in UK. Loved the mushy peas, haven't had that outside of the UK. It was minty which added more flavor. The only thing was that salt was sprinkled on it which made it salty. The chips are thick cut- crispy on the outside. We also ordered the fried panko coated oysters and chips. They were maybe 6 plump, very hot out of the fryer oysters. Done just right although the coating was a bit thick. The basil aioli that came with it was so good! The chowder of the day was cod and it was hearty and thick with chunks of fish, scallions. Perfect for this nippy January day. Just a heads-up, be ready for a bit of a wait--when we came on a Saturday afternoon, we had to wait 40 minutes for our meal, but it was absolutely worth it. Each fish and chips order comes with a single, 12-inch piece of battered and deep-fried cod, served alongside homemade chips. We shared it between two people, and it was plenty to leave us satisfied. The cod is coated in a wet batter and fried perfectly crispy. I do wish they offered halibut, though, because that batter is too good not to have more variety. We also tried the cod chowder (no clams), which was drizzled with a fresh parsley oil. It was incredible on its own and could easily be a meal by itself. Here is what we noticed: - The menu is on the wall and you order at the counter. Seating is then open. Outdoor seating was fine, but no spectacular views or anything. You have to get your own utensils, water, and condiments. - My wife and I split one order of the fish and chips, and we each got a bowl of the chowder of the day. It was fish chowder. This was plenty enough food...in fact, a little too much. We asked for the chips to be extra crispy, but didn't notice any crispiness when we got our food. The fish was good but a bit too greasy for my taste. We could've done without the house minty mushy peas that came with it, for sure! The chowder was pretty good, but just seemed to be missing enough seasoning. - One of my pet peeves is when they ask you for tips in the 18 to 25% range when you're essentially getting all your own utensils, water, etc. and busing your own dishes. The cod chowder was kind of bland and the fish tastes chewier and tougher (stick to Pike Place chowder) and the fish tacos just didn't do it for me. I think that it tastes really inauthentic and the addition of fried potatoes on top would be better if replaced with something more fresh like guac or avocado. Regardless, I would just get the fish and chips here. The restaurant sometimes gets bombarded and the wait times are LONG. Try placing an order online to reduce wait times and be warned that sometimes there isn't room for seating.
