First time getting Proper Food. I've seen them all over SF and finally decided to give it a try. It's a grab and go concept. Came here to pick up my MealPal order. The store is super small. Staff is friendly. I got the Spiced Chicken Grain. They offered to heat it up for me. I politely declined and took it back to my office. The lunch itself is tasty but portion is small IMO. If they're going with the healthy lunch idea, they'd at least label the nutrition info clearly. But I don't see calories and macros. Overall, it's an okay lunch option. read more

Seen these stores popping up all over the place and finally decided to give them a go for breakfast. Settled on a sausage, egg & cheese biscuit. I can only come to the conclusion that this item was far beyond its shelf life, the counter person nuked it to death or a combination thereof. Biscuit was bricked, sausage patty better repurposed for filling potholes, some sort of bright orange cheese-like substance embedded into the top biscuit. Utterly inedible. Utterly improper. Can't see why I'd ever come back. PS -Don't bother telling me to **** off back to McDonalds as I already did and I'd imagine we're both OK with that. read more

Proper Food always delivers in terms of taste, quality, and convenience. But this location in particular is above and beyond because of the staff who work here. Stopping in here for breakfast or lunch is a guaranteed way to brighten my day. Everyone at the 525 Market location deserves the world, you will not find a sweeter bunch. read more

For a grab-and-go place, this is as good ask it gets! There are so many choices for breakfast, lunch or dinner in SF. Most of the time, especially during a work-day, it can be hard to choose mostly because of how dense places can be or ho much little time you have to run for food if you forgot to pack a lunch. Enter Proper Food. It was about 12:45 when I went on the hunt for food. I had no plans or pre-determined place to get lunch. I walked down the street and saw Proper Food. "Hmm. It's like a minimalist 7/11 with a Nordstrom appeal" I thought. I walked in and was surprised to see that there was hardly any line, and people were efficiently entering and exiting with hot, delicious smelling food. There are plenty of choices for breakfast and lunch, neatly and freshly packed. I saw items ranging from salads, entrees and things like wraps. They had safe options and even exciting options. If you came here with a group of friends or co-workers, you'd all leave with something you can't wait to dig into. I grabbed the Salmon Teriyaki lunch which also included fresh greens (snow peas and broccoli) and perfectly cooked brown rice. It was almost $15, but for the portion size, freshness and convenience, I did not hesitate to slide my card. The friendly cashier asked me if I wanted my food warmed up, to which I replied "Yes!" After a few minutes (less than 5), my food was heated up in the cute little container it was packaged in and I raced back to the office to enjoy my food. I was amazed when I peeled back the foil. It looked delicious and surprisingly fresh for it being from a grab-and-go joint. I'll let the picture speak for itself. Taste was a party in my mouth. The salmon was perfectly cooked, no over or undercooked and the flavor was perfect. The brown rice wasn't the kind of brown rice you have to force yourself to eat- it was fluffy and moist. Like little pillows of pure joy. The greens had the perfect texture and still had a good crisp to them despite being heated up. All in all, this place is definitely on my go-to list for convenient lunch that tastes expertly prepared with high quality ingredients! read more

My favorite Proper Food. The food is very fresh and you get a good amount. Pretty good selection. I tried some tofu rolls that I had doubts about but they were tasty! I have liked everything I have tried here to included the specialty root beer and ginger ale. It's in the city so the price is reasonable. The workers are friendly and they keep things moving. Crowds allowing the staff will come out and answer all the food questions. They know their products well. This is my go to for a quick healthier option meal. read more

The food here is all fresh, well made, and you can tell they make an effort to select good ingredients. You get excellent quality items, and compared to other SF locations it is not too expensive. The lemon quinoa salad (with or without chicken) is my favorite but everything in the store looks so good. I had a hard time selecting lunch there were so many good options. I would definitely say there is something for everyone because they have a variety of meats, tofu, and vegan options. They boast all natural meats and list the farms or companies where the ingredients come from. The servings are quite big so I like to get lunch and save half for dinner. This is take out only, so no seating, but the service is quick and friendly. Even though you are only in the store for a short time, it is clean and welcoming! I have ordered online, which is a very easy and quick process and I have also stopped in and picked something up and they seem to be well-stocked with all of their menu options so no fear of them running out of your favorite. read more

Brand new location so I'd like to think that they're still working out the kinks, but I can't say they made a good first impression. It was fairly quiet when I visited, but the shelves were also almost bare. The cashier tried to charge me three times for the same item... caught it before completing the purchase at least. Sometimes you're in a rush and need good food fast. If you are, look no further. This is not an airport Wolfgang Puck where the food is questionable, everything is made fresh from good ingredients. Because of this, they do charge more than you'd expect for a pre-made, refrigerated meal. One major downside is that there is no way to sub one ingredient for another or to remove an ingredient from an item altogether (e.g. are you craving a breakfast burrito but you're not a fan of sour cream?.....too bad.) Also, everything you order is cold - mind you they'll gladly heat your burrito or sandwich in a small oven, but you generally end up with a partially reheated meal. The concept works well for salads. Service here is always friendly and most employees seem genuinely happy (which is a welcome relief in FiDi.) My favorite item thus fare is the Couscous & Spinach Salad with Honey-Coriander Chicken - I'm not a salad person, but I genuinely crave this sometimes and it's actually filling. Overall, I can't think of a restaurant that executes on the pre-made concept any better than Proper Food. Is it pricey? Yes. But you get what you pay for - a solid portion of well made food with wholesome ingredients from happy employees, not a terrible trade-off. If prices were 10-20% cheaper, I would swing by more often. Since they're not, this spot serves its purpose of serving good (cold) food fast. read more

Solid Proper Food! Boy was I glad when I noticed they started working on this spot and turning into a Proper Food. The place before was a terrible overpriced Sushi joint and now it's become a spot for some very good food. Much like the other Proper Foods located nearby this location sells breakfast and lunch food items ranging from salads and sandwiches to full plated meals like steak and salmon. I came by early before work (since I work in the same building!) and grabbed a steak breakfast burrito. The place is small, but after you see the layout it really doesn't need much more space. The burrito was warmed up by the lady who works there (who was very nice) and it was absolutely delicious. It had a great combo of steak inside with avocado and eggs. I really enjoyed this spot and I know I will be coming by much more often to try more food! The only gripe I will say is the place is a bit pricey. The burrito was $9.00 and many other items for lunch vary from $8-14 bucks. I would definitely recommend downloading the Thanx App which helps out to build rewards if you continue to come here (like I will be). read more

This is a good spot for when you're looking for a quick and relatively healthy lunch. I often go here during the weekdays, since it's right by my office and easy to grab-n-go. They have both cold and hot options, and the food feels clean, fresh and tasty. I enjoyed the soba noodles, egg sandwiches as well as their quinoa. Plenty of vegetarian options too! On a whim I decided to get a breakfast croissant and was stunned at how good it was. They make it to order so it was hot and fresh. Cheese was gruyere-ish (I didn't really think too hard about it) and croissant was really good, as in I would have been happy to buy it in a bakery. I know some people are not a fan of this place or concept, but big pluses for being connected to my building. Also, I'm fine with prepackaged as long as it was made fresh which what I picked up was. Pricing is good for the area. I tried the tofu spring rolls which were just okay, not as soft as a traditional spring roll. The ahi tuna sandwich was excellent. Good sized portion for a sandwich and really tasty what they mixed together with the tuna. It wasn't just a mayo or sauce. read more

Perfect if in a rush. While food is premade a few hours before you're eating it, I think it's still preferable to a "fresh" made sandwich at a place like Specialty's where all the ingredients are mass produced and shipped in from Sysco. Steak bowl thing is pretty good. The $2 coffee is pretty good as well if you aren't into waiting for the pomp and circumstance of Philz. While I like their items, it's still something I'd get only if I am really busy because I prefer other food choices in the area for the same price I'm paying here, but apparently, there's a lot of busy people based on how must business they've been getting since being open a just a couple weeks. read more

My favorite lunch place whenever I'm in the city (for work or pleasure). It's also pretty good for breakfast. The food is fresh, healthy and there is enough variety. While the food looked good, I unfortunately can't try any of it, even after paying, because the gentleman behind the counter "unplugged the oven" because they closed in 20 minutes. It would have been really nice to let the girl know with a suitcase, who was buying cold food, that she might want to rethink her choice before she pays. Or offer a refund maybe? The fact I even asked nicely why he couldn't heat it up seemed to offend him greatly. So while I can't review the food since it has to go in the trash, I can say their customer service sucks. read more

it was good at first very friendly staff except for one guy who seems to hate being there...he never smiles nor says good morning & doesn't seem to want to go the extra mile to do something for you...long story short ...he shouted outside the store & told me I could go to another branch next time....not very professional ...regardless of what it was we were discussing about you do not do or say that especially when I have been a loyal customer form the start & since they are in my ofc bldg. ...and new girl is totally oblivious to what redeem is ...while these two guys just watched....so much for grab & go idea ...just plain rude...not happy ppl in there ...they need to work on their manners & be respectful ....too bad... read more
