Honestly, my expectations weren't high - this is kind of a touristy area, the food is pretty basic, southern comfort food - I figured it would be a decent but probably not impressive. I was VERY pleasantly surprised! The food is very good, and prepared in a very traditional southern way. Stopped in for the fish and shrimp, one order for me one for the boss. We took them to go. I asked if we had plenty of tartar and red sauce; we didn't.....On the way out I told the young man behind the counter MERRY Christmas, he looked straight at me didn't say a word...... The food was so bland we stopped at a convenience store for salt and pepper. And to top it off, I've had better onion rings at Sonic. Just my experience; might go give it a shot see what u think... We were so excited about trying this place since it was under new ownership. The atmosphere since it was redone is much better. Cool bar area. However, that is where the complements stop. The service was horrible. Our drinks were delivered to the wrong table, they took forever to get and when we finally got them the glasses were a mess. The food was very subpar with bland taste and not very warm when we received it. Service was mediocre. Didn't feel welcoming at all. All in all we will not return as there are other places with better service and food, one being right across the street. I love this place. It's very casual, the fried green tomatoes are the best. Peanuts on the tables, peanut shells on the floor. The building is an actual old train depot that was moved to this location. There are stories of hauntings, and it looks like it could be. Lol. Right next to the railroad tracks, so the trains pass by fairly regularly. read more

We loved that the place is train themed, my little one is still obsessed with trains. So, it was immediately a hit that they had a miniature train there, that you can pay to conduct (50 cents). There is memorabilia everywhere which is fun to look at. The menu is small, but had enough to choose something from. I loved the veggie plate, unfortunately they were out of baked potato's, busy lunch apparently. My veggies were good, fried okra, mac and cheese, and mashed potato's. The gravy was so good, I was dipping everything in it. My kids loved their chicken strips, and burger. The server was so sweet, and smiling the whole time. read more

My husband picks up food from here on a regular basis. We LOVE the chicken fried steak and all of the sides. The portions are huge and we never are able to clear the plate. Mac n cheese is creamy and delicious and they serve awesome fried okra and the most tasty onion rings! If you read the history of this establishment in their website, you'll find that the name originates from the locomotives that used to pass by on the neighboring train tracks. They used to be called "puffer belly's"...which eventually translated to Puffabellys. Service is amazing and we highly recommend this place and of course will be returning. read more

Very disappointing meal. Service was great but the food was not. Ordered a cheeseburger and fries (fries cost $2.99, not included in the price if the burger). The burger was not even warm enough to melt the cheese on it. The burger was big but almost tasteless. Fries were okay. Overpriced as well. I enjoyed the ambiance here at Puffabellys. Very Western atmosphere! I ordered the Mushroom Swiss Burger and for the side, I had fried okra. The burger here was okay...could use a little work, but it wasn't terrible. You know when you order a burger, it's always sizzling hot? Mine was kind of warm. It didn't have that "oh my goodness, this burger melts in my mouth" type of flavor, lol (don't know if that makes sense to y'all). Maybe that isn't their specialty? Oh well, I'd give the burger a C rating. I didn't like the fried okra here. Didn't really taste fresh to me. I'd rather get fried okra at Churches Chicken! I hear the Chicken Fried Chicken here is really good, so I'll probably get that next time. The service was great. Our waitress was really nice and helpful. That's always a great thing!! This place is a lot of fun and a must stop when going through Old Town Spring. I love the bucket of roasted peanuts that are on each table so you can snack while contemplating the menu. They offer a good variety of burgers and southern classics. They also have some of the BEST fried pickles I have ever eaten. I think the best thing about Puffabelly's is the wide variety of activities they sponsor. There's singer/song writer showcases, open mic nights, melodramas, and many festivals throughout the year. They have great outdoor seating and stage. It is the best place to hang out, drink a cold beer, and listen to great music. read more

Just by happenstance I was in Old Town Spring for something else and decided to stop in this very old railroad depot that had been moved here. Long saga short, got the best hamburger I've ever eaten and that says a lot. Three different choices for buns, all fresh and the best burger meat hands down . Highly recommend. Didn't try the desserts but I'll be back a lot and it's 40 miles from my house . read more

Wow..... Came early on a Wednesday to eat inside. Ordered a beer and a burger, and was swatting small flies even before the food or drink came. I gave up on my food and drink half way through because flies kept landing on everything. I let the server know this. The server apologized but THEY CHARGED ME FOR THE ENTIRE MEAL AND DRINK. I took my parents to Old Town Spring for a bit of a "Texas" experience, so it seemed fitting that we should go to Puffabelly's for lunch. We were seated immediately, and really liked the nostalgic decor inside. And really, who doesn't love peanuts when you can throw the shells on the floor (besides those with allergies...). The food was basic and good-burgers cooked well, yummy fries, good chili. We were all happy with what we got. There wasn't much taste to the fried okra though. The service was friendly and attentive, although they did get a couple minor things wrong. I would go back for a good, solid lunch any time! read more

Prices have soared and they have done away with lunch specials. Chicken Fried Steak is now $21. New owners are changing the nostalgic dining area. They have upgraded the parking and built decks. When you come to Old Town Spring you plan on shopping for a good while and need a place to sit and eat. This is one of a few places close by to eat and does its job. Its southern cooking in an old creaky floor type joint to give you that old town feel. The only thing about the old creaky floors I wasn't sure was how long it had been since they had a good scrub down. My shoes felt sticky to the floor every time I walked on them. The food was ok and the service was great. The also have live bands which I love because one of my absolute favorite Texas Country singers plays here. read more

Home-cooked viddles the way someone's grandma used to make 'em. Puffabelly's name is right on. The place will do just that: Puff a belly. The chicken fried steak is really good and the mashed potatoes on the side are perfect for mingling foods on the plate. Like most places in Old Town Spring, timing is everything. You try coming here on a Friday or Saturday night, especially during the holidays, prepare to wait. If you're smart and visit during off-hours or the weekday, you may just get your pick of tables. Brought my mom who was visiting from CA perfect little taste of Texas! Cool ambiance and decor. We got here right at 11 on a Saturday morning (2nd to be seated) by 12 there were only 2 tables left! Definitely busy our server was slammed we asked for napkins and refill and as she was walking back got flagged by 3 other tables! I got my refill but she forgot the napkins but understandable considering how busy. She was really sweet and apologetic and hustled to get them once we asked again! The food was really good! Enjoyed a delicious lunch here at 1pm. I had the steam engine chicken burger and it was delicious, the bread was fresh, in addition to all the veggies inside. The reason I give 3 stars comes down to solely the cleanliness of the restaurant which as a customer is important to me. The seats and tables were sticky- the menus had a layer of stickiness. I used the restroom and even the toilets were sticky, gross. There was toilet paper all over the floor and the sink was a magnet for germs. The trash can was not only full, but overflowing on to the ground. 2 hours after opening? I'm guessing wasn't emptied the night beforehand. The ceiling had the tiles tilted and hanging down. There was a layer of dust and scum on the hvac system over the bathrooms. Looks like the place hadn't been properly cleaned and definitely not maintained. Made me hesitant to eat the food considering the kitchen is hidden, I can only imagine what it looks like back there. I think beyond good food, you need a location that is clean it shows respect to the establishment as a whole. I will be back, but hopefully they can catch up on the cleanliness of the restaurant. read more

How does that phrase go? " I wasn't born in Texas but I got here as quick as I could." That's exactly how I felt about Puffabellys. This restaurant is exactly what I imagined a Texas bar/grill to be like. Once you are seated, there is a pail of peanuts to eat (dump the shells on the floor). The service was quick and courteous. We arrived on a Friday afternoon so we were able to take advantage of their cheeseburger special with fries for $7. I opted for onion rings instead of fries and they did not disappoint. I'd also recommend trying the hushpuppies. It was a new thing to me (not being from TX), but they were the best I've had thus far. There's a stage for local music. Unfortunately we were there way too early for the entertainment but there was plenty of local country flavor with Robert Earl Keen and other famous Texas musicians playing in the restaurant. So the next time I'm here, it'll be in the evening with a band playing, a good meal and a bucket of Shiner. A place like this makes Texas a great state to live in. read more

Best option for dinner in Old Town Spring. Awesome service, and a decent menu filled with your typical southern eats. We always stop by whenever we have family in town. They are good with good groups which is a plus anywhere in Spring. The service is always top notch. Even though it looks mostly likely teenagers or younger adults working as waiters they are very attentive and fast. Food is good, their burgers are always cooked right and are always served smoking hot. My father in-law loves their chicken fried steak, and he considers himself a chicken fried steak connoisseur. Not too much breading and a nice thick steak in the middle. Fried appetizers are awesome, all of them. The sides are also great. Atmosphere is great, nice theme to the restaurant. I'm not sure what people find so amazing about this place. Was it good?? Yes. Was it 5-star good? Not exactly. This is just your typical fried food and burger establishment. Our waitress' suggestion was the chicken fried chicken with gravy. Anyone who knows me or my dining companion would know we wouldn't order that, but it definitely confirmed my opinion of their menu. There are a few grilled items on the menu, but not enough. I ordered the grilled catfish and shrimp. I'm not a person who likes my shrimp grilled actually, but the only way to get grilled catfish was to get shrimp with it. Sorry, but for me that is -1 star. The fish was good, but a bit rubbery on the ends. The side salad was okay - mostly romaine and mostly the white ends that everyone hates. I know it has to go somewhere, but I just wish that "somewhere" was not my salad! There was one lonely little cherry tomato in there - just one. It gives the impression that it is all thrown together in a bowl and not made per order. We also ordered the fried green tomatoes and pickles as an appetizer. The pickles were good, but the tomatoes had little to no flavor. It was like fried wax and there was little green to be seen. So once again, this is just your typical locally owned country style restaurant. So what might someone like about this place that just didn't make it for me? The onion rings are HUGE!! There is a small bucket of peanuts on the table. It has a very country and "old town" feel to it with the wood floors and seating that was obviously purchased from flea markets or antique stores. It definitely has a vibe that many will love since it matches that of Old Town Spring. This place is probably better for people visiting with a larger group and people with kids. read more

I never make a trip to Houston without scheduling the time for a quick jaunt up to Puffabelly's in Spring, TX. And if at all possible, I make sure to come on a Wednesday so I can watch Davin James and his guest play a special "unplugged" gig. This is not the place to come during your weight watcher's program! The food is good, and the servings are huge. My favorite appetizer in all of Texas is the Texas Sampler. WARNING: Do not attempt to eat this alone! Make sure you have at least 1-2 friends. More would be better! This bountiful buffet of battered bites will blow you away! Onion Rings, Texas Toothpicks, fried dill pickles, fried green tomatoes and the phenomenal Puff-A-Peppers! After all that fried fare, last Wednesday, I had to settle for a house salad and a bowl of Chilli paired with a bucket of cold ones. If you've never seen Davin James play live, you are missing one of Texas' hidden treasures. For the life of me, I don't understand how Davin hasn't secured a contract with a top label and gone on to sell out the big boxes. But selfishly, I'm glad to have him here! (Sorry, Davin). I'm not a music aficionado, but I know what I like. And I would put Davin's guitar playing and booming voice right up there with anybody's. Davin is well known in Texas Music circles and top name musicians from all over stop by Puff's to join Davin each Wednesday. Puff's also put's on plays on Saturday nights, but I haven't seen one yet. Maybe next trip. By the way, to cap off a perfect getaway, do what we did.
