Met my parents there for Sunday brunch. The food was good, cocktails more interesting than average. However: music was loud, hard to hear for my parents who both have hearing loss and we were all wearing masks which further muffles. I asked if it could be turned down and got a curt "we'll see." It wasn't. 30 minutes after we ordered and no food, I asked the server for an ETA and got a sharp "the kitchen has your order." When food finally came, they served 3 of us and the other 3 had to wait another 10 minutes. No apology or explanation. I was a server for many years and would never have treated customers like that. The Birthplace of Brunch! To begin, we almost went to Grow before we found Pumps, which ended up being the Graceland of brunch! Jeremy, the bartender, was actually a sorcerer in disguise making magical potions that never ended or emptied. We were in an exceptionally tight spot with it being late, one of the last weekends of the season, and limited capacity due to COVID. The hostess was great, and able to seat us at a clean table on the patio. The service was fast, attentive, but not overly so, and the food was great. We asked our server for a few recommendations and they did not disappoint. We first ate here in 2010 when we rent a cabin in Saugatuck for a big family vacation. We loved it so much we made a special stop on the way back from our second wine trip through MI. We've only been there for lunch and ordered basic sandwiches but they tasted amazing. They have a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and soups. Both times we went there was a line to order but the long line moved quickly, and they brought the food to us. Even though it was always busy, they have a ton of seating upstairs and in the room aside the main dining area, so there always a good place to seat. We really enjoyed the atmosphere. 1 star cause I have to. Don't waste your money. I stopped in during the week to be the only customer there for the dinner service. I sat at the bar cause anywhere else felt awkward since it was so empty. I ordered the shrimp pasta. It was very bland and the shrimp still had their tails on. I had to pull the shrimp out of a red sauce to pull the tails off so they were edible. Not the quality or effort of the $30 dish. I couldn't finish it so I got a box and asked for the check. I had my drinks on one check and my food on another. Come to find out they charged me $38 for the shrimp pasta which is not what it says on the menu. I did not notice until they had already run my card. I also paid for my drinks with cash and they shorted me change. I asked who I thought was the owner and he didn't seem to know where he was. He confirmed the shrimp pasta was $30 not $38. My original server never came back after dropping off the bill. She hid in the kitchen until I had to ask the owner. The owner then went to get her because he had no idea how to fix it or what was going on. While they were both at the terminal discussing what was going on she first asked me what change I was missing and I broke the math down for her and explained it was a $1 short. She then turns around and tells the owner the previous server did not leave her enough change (it's my change you don't just short me because you don't have the money or maybe tell me that and I might say just keep it). Instead you know you short me change and over charge me the pasta and hide in the back. They were able to fix my over charging of the pasta and finally give me my $1 back but they never truly apologized. Once I packed to leave I had to tell them good night since neither wanted to talk to me. Ambiance might be nice but overall this place is way over priced and the customer service is awful. I like that they are trying something different but sometimes having the simple staples for breakfast doesn't hurt. If you are looking for a traditional breakfast, you won't find it here. I think this place is adorable. Customer service was excellent. It's clean and decorated real cute. They offer a Bloody Mary bar on the weekends until 3pm. Loads of helpful staff. It's counter order then they bring your food out by name. My vegetarian Benedict was a little over cooked and lacking more sauce but the flavor was there and it tasted great! My potato side was sure yummy. Coffee was good. My family liked their portions and had a couple build your Bloody Mary from their bar. Indoor or screened porch seating and an upstairs too. We discovered this spot while walking through the streets of Saugatuck on a full moon night. Of course, it was closed around 7p because it's a breakfast/lunch place. However, we stopped by the next morning, which happened to be a rainy, fall morning. This is a place where you walk in, place your order at the counter, and they bring you your order to the table. Pumpernickels was very cozy. It sits on a corner where the first floor has two large rooms with cozy tables and lamps for that relaxed, small town-cafe look. I ordered quiche Lorraine and coffee. The friendly staff gave me the coffee at the counter and then I sat down at a table with the seat facing the fall foliage, filled street.. The food came very quickly. The guy who brought out the food was really awesome, refilling my coffee and very attentive to my needs, including removing my plate when I was done so I could write more comfortably.The quiche was cooked to a soft, delicious consistency. It was light, fluffy and the flavor was just right. With 2 watermelon wedges, and cantaloupe pieces accompanying the dish, it made for a perfect, light breakfast before hitting the road back home. read more

Came from GR to spend part of the day in this quaint town. Saw that there wasn't a wait here as there was everywhere else. The staff of this rustic little place was great. Unfortunately the food was not. My husband ordered the clam chowder and fries. He thought the soup was under spiced and the fries were soggy. I ordered the $9 avocado toast, which I thought was reasonable. For $3 more I could have had an egg. I opted not to. The toast was burnt black and covered by the bland mushed avocado. The least I can say I was very disappointed. The bread was wheat, not grainy, and almost like it came out of a cheep bag from a random grocery store. It was topped with marinated cherry tomatoes, which were decent, and raw red onions. It was not very impressive even before I took a bite. Burnt toast! Unreal. Asked for the manager and she was polite. Said she'd take it off the bill for us, but didn't try very hard to make up for it. She claimed it was human error. Sorry, not trying to be mean, but felt more like stupidity to me. It was obvious the toast was charred. No mistake there. How could a cook in their right mind send it out? I would have been happy to wait five minutes longer for a redo. There may have been a reason why this place didn't have a wait. I'd say the three stars it has here on Yelp are understandable. It's a shame too because it's a great place and location with lots of potential and for the prices they have on the menu you would expect better. They need to beef up this item and not send it out burnt to a crisp. I almost ordered the meat and cheese board for $16, but after asking the server for a description I was pretty sold off it. I love supporting local vendors and markets, etc...but the cheese board had a summer sausage, cheddar, Swiss, American and blue cheese. Many may like this assortment, but I thought for the price it could be more unique. When I think American cheese my mind goes straight to Kraft. Again, disappointed. I ordered a side of sweet potato fries and this is where they slightly redeemed themselves. They were waffled, crispy and tasty. There were a lot of them and I was pleased with the value of only paying $3 for them. I don't mind that we payed three bucks for the fries as it was an improvement by far and after all it was only three dollars. Let's be honest here though, you didn't offer to "buy" something off the menu to make up for the mistake. My husband attests to this as he witnessed the whole thing. I might have considered it had you, and I would not have written up this nasty review. Anyway, I'm glad you anticipated the review because it should have been no surprise to you that it was negative. Tried to dine in on Sunday but instead of greeted at the host stand we stood at for ten minutes, we were barely acknowledged, the MIA hostest was extremely rude and short verbally when she did finally surface. I've never felt so unwelcome and disrespected by an entire establishment bc there were several employees who glared at us. I think it's comical you promote diversity and culture on your website but act like a 7th grade mean girl the moment someone steps in that physically or racially differs from you. I've worked in busy bars and restaurants for 15+ years and it takes a lot for me to speak up and even more to write a review. But this is something morally I cannot seem to digest. You are not "nurturing the human spirit" and that is not who you showed you are by treating potential regular customers like dirt. Stopped here for lunch during a day trip to Saugatuck. My partner and I both got the grilled cheese, he got potato salad as his side while I stuck with the fries. The facility and service: The actual restaurant was beautifully decorated and spotless. The patio, where we sat, was the same. The service was great, both the bartender/hostess and our server were very friendly and attentive. The food: The sandwiches were okay. Not bad, but not great either. The cheese wasn't fully melted on either of our sandwiches, but it could be that it was supposed to be made that way. I loved the bread that they came on. My fries were good, my partner's potato salad was okay. I tried it and we both agreed potatoes tasted a little too undercooked, but the flavor was good! My true rating would be 4.5 stars, but you don't get that choice. The new Pumpernickels is a terrific addition to downtown Saugatuck. Unlike the prior iteration (under the same name), Pumpernickels is now a younger-appealing, lively spot from breakfast to the late evening. The charming older building has been given a makeover with dark wood, comfortable seating, and a big "Saugatuck" on one wall, the letters made of some faux plant life. I have dined here twice since the opening, once for breakfast (excellent eggs Benedict) and once for appetizers (try the fried lasagna) in the evening. Waitstaff is still coming up-to-speed, but that's to be expected for a startup. The owners are on hand and very involved. They are personable, out to please, and in tune with the times. I fully expect this place to be packed once the tourist season is upon us, but the owner is also committed to catering to the locals. By all means, if you're in town, drop in to the new Pumpernickels. read more

Well, we've eaten here many times but evidently I failed to review them. Many of our favorite meals were breakfast and sometimes a great deli sandwich. We had just rolled into town the day before and the next early morning decided to check out what was local and what had changed since last visit. I was soo impressed when we went by and were looking at their menu, a lady came out and immediately offered assistance seeing that I was on a mobility scooter. She was so kind. I told her a can walk just not distances and proceeded to go in an order my egg sandwich which was perfect for me. My hubster has enjoyed multigrain pancakes there before and remembered them as stellar. --this is a great deli. -like everything here in town, it's a slooower pace and when you go at peak time, crowds are sometimes overwhelming. read more

We spent a day in Saugatuck and I would highly recommend doing so. It's an adorable downtown with loads of shops and cafes. We only went to this one cafe so I don't have a point of reference to compare others. We stopped in at 12:30 on a Sunday and they were readily able to seat us. We walked it to live music and a really cute environment. We were informed that the brunch was over and lunch was all that was available. It seemed a little early to end brunch on a Sunday but we would find something. We were contemplating sharing a sandwich as the descriptions looked really tasty. We saw a few come out and quickly decided against it as they were heavy on the bread and light on the contents. After getting out water filled by a young man who informed us he wouldn't be our server we were greeted by our server and we placed our order to split a Cobb salad. (There was a pretty significant time gap in which we considered leaving)The food was pretty good though it took a long time to come out. So why the three stars? Apparently if you are not Saugatuck Royalty which apparently the table of 6 beside us was, you have to wait. We watched the GM, at least two waitstaff and the bartender visit their table multiple times while all the surrounding tables were consistently thanked for their patience for no service. In fact the bartender made a point of pooping a champagne cork to let it fly and bounce of the ceiling for the local crew. Straight up obnoxious. So if you are committed to patronizing enough to be worthy of attentive service this may be the place for you. If you don't have that kind of time, well maybe look around. read more

Very disappointed. First time visiting this restaurant and will be the last. Ordered the Eggs Benedict and the eggs were extremely runny but was not too upset as this often happens if you don't specify upon ordering. HOWEVER, I am limiting carbs and said I didn't want the potatoes that come with the entree. The waitress asked if I wanted tomatoes or fruit. I said tomatoes. To my surprise, when the bill came, I was charged $1.50 for the mushy, hot house tomatoes, but what a surprise, no credit for no potatoes. When I questioned the waitress she said it is specified on the menu that substitutions are extra. While this is true, I would have thought a good waitress would have pointed it out, as I really just didn't want the potatoes, and tomatoes were gross. read more

But, since our recent visit we were served by a children hater that told us that if our baby continued to cry we were not welcome at the outdoor seating at the restaurant. Then, he preceded to say that we do not like dogs and we would let the patrons know that as well, and ask them to leave. Well, we had already ordered. We were flabbergasted at his mannerism and hate toward babies, children and pets. Our service was also very slow and our waiter went mia and never returned. We went to the original (not impressed) and have been to the new place twice once for breakfast the food was presented nicely but that's were it stopped I am not sure but I don't get the feeling all the food is fresh it may be frozen and re-heated. Untoasted English muffin, soggy and we overall. One party got a lunch item (egg salad sandwich), which seemed infinitely better than any of the breakfast items. We saw their Prime Rib Special on a Facebook website, so we decided to give them a try. Pumpernickles has new owners this year and a totally different menu, GREAT. Our first impression was that they appear clean with a brightly lit bar. Their main floor seating is limited however, they have a second floor, where your food comes up on a Dumb Waiter. Having a good priced Prime Rib Special that evening, we expected them to be busy, but they are not, Hummm. It was real weird, that when we entered, every employee turned to look at us. We are an average sized couple, average looking and dressesd in business attire, their stares made us feel very uncomfortable. We were greated and seated. Ordered and received our drinks in good time. We ordered the Prime Rib Special as planned. Their meat portion was generous and not extremely fatty, a very good start. It came as ordered, rare, with a side of horseradish, veggies that were barely cooked and potatoes. We requested bread or rolls but they don't have anything, but some store bought sliced bread, we passed on that. The Prime Rib was fresh, tender and juicy, but completely tasteless, a real letdown. It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't YummY as expected. Yes, we finished our dinners and the rest went home for our Fur Baby. The best part of the meal, was that nothing was over salted like most other places. Will we return? Most likely yes. Hopefully with the several complaints about their lack of seasoning, they'll splurge on some spices and seasonings. They need to have some kind of decent dinner rolls too. Oh no, a price increase? No Longer Family Friendly, Poor New Management My family ate here every year as a great tradition during our annual day trip to Saugatuck. While the new owners did a great job updating the interior, they no longer have a kids menu, and they wouldn't serve breakfast at 11:30 (despite the website and printed menus stating breakfast until 1:00pm). In addition, the young female manager was not accommodating in any way - wouldn't even cook two eggs for my son, even though there were eggs in one of the lunch sandwiches. They also had run out of the soup and lettuce for lunch. Sadly, our annual tradition has ended at this restaurant, and we will not be going back. read more

This place was perfect for breakfast, many muffin and cupcake choices. The special was a cheesy potato 'pie' and it was delicious! It was a hash brown 'pie' with cheddar cheese melted in it with slices of ham. I also had the cranberry muffin, it tasted freshly made and was very good. My wife had the original, 2 eggs, any style, biscuit, melon slices, choice of meat and a side of cheesy hash browns. She said hers was great. The coffee is fresh and good, nothing really fancy, just good coffee, and not hash house crap, real, roasted plain old good coffee. There were many people there and the atmosphere was good. We could not say enough of about our experience at Pumpernickel's this weekend! We came there on Sunday for the bottomless mimosas and were pleasantly surprised with our service, our food and of course the mimosas! The four of us each loved our meal (avocado toast as an appetizer, corned beef and hash, the carnivore omelette and the crab cake benedict). We all loved it! Plus, our server CC was the best! She was on point with our food and drinks, and she had such a great personality. She made our experience the best! Then we were all impressed how the owner came out and talked with us as well. While I was there, one of the other patrons was a beautiful transgender woman, and I could see that she was quite unhappy with the owner misgendering her on purpose. She walked up to the owner and corrected him very loudly that she is a woman. He continued to misgender her and as she was leaving he yelled; "THANKS FOR COMING BROTHER!" I will not go back to this restaurant as an LGBTQIA person. I high don't recommend it. read more
