First visit to Tombstone back in July! We tried the spicy Mac and cheese and ribs at Puny John's and it did not disappoint! The ribs were smoky in flavor and we dipped it in different sauces. The spicy mac and cheese was also flavorful! Service was great and there are many tables with fans to help cool down.

Hubby and I stopped in Tombstone for lunch on our way to Bisbee. Because we had our dogs with us we stopped here for lunch and enjoyed their patio seating. Food was amazing, drinks were great and they gave us water for our pups. Half rack of ribs, Mac and cheese, baked beans, potato salad such amazing sides. Highly recommend.

Puny John's BBQ was busy, but you didn't have you to wait to be seated like the many other restaurants around Tombstone. Plus, BBQ always is a good idea, right? However, I found the food to be A-OK. While in Tombstone we were looking for a place to get lunch and stumbled upon Puny John's BBQ, which was off the main drag. The place was super busy, with nearly every table taken. You order at the counter and are handed a number, which indicates to the employee which table to deliver your food. It's a casual spot. My partner and I shared the full rack of ribs meal, which came with two sides. It was more than enough food for us. For BBQ sauces, you can choose among the different sauces, including one that was prickly pear flavored. I thought the ribs were fine. They weren't the tastiest, as the texture was super soft, like they had been cooked in a slow cooker all day. It resembled pulled pork, but on a bone. I like tender, but what you normally get from ribs is a meaty, smoky flavor to it. However, it just tasted too soft to me. It was also heavily seasoned, so didn't think BBQ sauce was needed. The sides were good. We ordered green beans and mac and cheese, and the mac and cheese had a wonderful spice to it and liked that the green beans were cooked with pork, so you got a lot of that flavor with. I was liking the sides more than the meat, which I think tells you what you need to know about this BBQ spot.

My main complaint about this place is the prices. The fact that they charge an extra $2 for lettuce, onion, tomatoes and pickles for a sandwich or hamburger is crazy, especially because a standalone burger is roughly $12. Granted it says it's 1/2 pound but come on! The restaurant seemed pretty clean but rather generic in decor. Service was decent but far from friendly and they brought out my burger without bacon when I know that's what was ordered but had no way to prove it as the receipt doesn't give details of the order. We had to go get the ketchup packets (yes packets) from the front where you order. The burger had no condiments and while smoky it was dry. My husband liked his brisket sandwich but the fries were bland. At $36 bucks for a burger, sandwich combo (one side one drink) and a bottle of water, I don't think it's worth it.

Great food if you're looking for lunch or dinner without a fuss. Order at the counter, and they deliver. Pulled pork was tender, not fatty at all. Baked potato was good/split half was a good portion as they are big potatoes! Service was good, self serve sauces and condiments. Nothing fancy- just good food!

I ordered the 1/2 loaded potato with brisket. The brisket was very watery and shredded. I ended up just pushing everything on top aside and eating the potato only. We came because a person said it was pet friendly but your pet has to be enclosed. We had a stroller but had to keep it zipped up. There's a patio but no shade if we didn't have the stroller. Homemade bbq sauces, lemonade, tea and Mac and cheese were good! Check in and get the $10 off Yelp coupon!!

We were referred by a gunslinger riding his scooter to stop there for luchboy was he right!! The ribs were amazing & the choice of sides were great!! Margaritas were very tasty too! We will definitely be back when in the area!!

My husband chose this restaurant, based on the smell of smoked meat and some of his quick Google-related research. We were still alone at this time, and figured we could sit down to a quick and filling meal before my family started rolling in. You order at the counter, then find a table in either the long dining room, or on the patio. It was a bit too frigid for outdoor dining, so we sat at one of the smaller indoor tables, next to a window. I went with the Puny Pie (baked beans topped with mac and cheese topped with brisket), and my husband - for some crazy reason - went with the Nacho Dog (a hot dog with cheese sauce). I definitely made the better food decision. The Puny Pie was good, but not worth the $10 price tag. It was definitely more baked beans and mac and cheese than brisket, but what brisket I had was good. It wasn't overly filling, which was fine for me that day. My husband's Nacho Dog was a joke, really. By the time it came to our table, it looked like his hot dog was covered with a sheet of yellow plastic. It comes with a side; he chose the mac and cheese. A hot dog and a small scoop of mac and cheese set us back $11. SO not worth it. My family started rolling in about the time I was halfway through my bowl of beans. The staff did a good job of managing two groups coming in at different times and descending on where we were sitting (instead of ordering right away). We were a group of 13 by the time the dust settled. At any rate, this place is overpriced for what you get, but I guess that's to be expected for a tourist-trap like Tombstone. We wouldn't go back.

This little gem has out standing food and service. The chicken is tender and well seasoned. The brisket is outstanding moist and the flavor profile is perfect . famous motto: "Anyone can cook." But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Puny john's, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest BBQ in Tombstone . I dream of your spicy mac and cheese and your brisket. Located 3 hours from my house, I will TOTALLY DRIVE back to get some BBQ to go! My family and I went to Tombstone for a day trip. By the time we got there, we were starving. We had this rustic cowboy come up to us and ask if we had had lunch yet. Then he told us about Puny John's... The food did NOT disappoint. We had a variety of food and everything we had was absolutely delicious! Service and price were exceptional and I swear, as soon as I have the time, I am coming back for BBQ to go!

Found this place through Yelp, very curious to try their food. I had pulled chicken since I don't eat much red meat, but my husband & son had the pulled pork and my niece had the vegetarian hotdog. We all agreed that their food is average for our tastes. Extra sauce for 50 cents each, interesting. You pick your own table outdoor or indoor and order and pay your food inside then they'll bring your food to your table. You clean your own table afterwards ( not sure is it because of the Covid or just the restaurant rules).

Oh my goodness!!!!! Amazing BBQ We had the huge sandwiches with the yummiest side orders of Smokey spicy Mac and cheese, Coleslaw and BBQ baked beans. Their sandwich buns are great too. Food served fast and hot. The servers were really nice. We will be returning. Such wonderful food in a clean casual dinning. YOU HAVE GOT TO EAT HERE. BEST PLACE IN ALL OF TOMBSTONE. Ate here again and just as good. Love all the choices of different BBQ sauce they make and that you can choose from. You also can enjoy a good TOMBSTONE BREWING COMPANY BEER. win win. We stopped here while visiting Tombstone with friends. The Man at the front desk of our hotel highly suggested this place. Bbq is a hit or a miss. This place isn't the best bbq we have had, but it was a nice treat, aside from the bar - type food you would usually find in Tombstone. We were served very quickly. Literally less than 5 minutes upon sitting at a table. We had ordered the pulled pork, brisket, & chicken, with a side of Mac, Coleslaw, baked beans. The meat was a bit dry, but still good. The sides were great! They had a variety of sauces for you to choose from, about 5 or 6. All were great, and homemade! The owner of the place, i am assuming, came around a couple times to check on us, and to get feedback. He was very nice, could tell he took pride in what he was doing! We will have to give this place another try next time we are in town! read more

underwhelming. this describes the entire town as well as the BBQ. I appreciate the staff working thru the COVID and hate to ding the place, but it wasn't a great experience. I would give them another shot but would get the food to go for sure. :( read more

Wow, what can I say, but...Puny Pie! Delicious . The food here is delicious. As you walk in, you are greeted by the friendly employees and given menus. You are asked to select your own table and order at the counter when you are ready. I ordered, paid, then went back to my table and placed the order number on the table. The order came out within 5 minutes! The Puny Pie packs a punch, brisket at the bottom of the bowl, with Mac n cheese, and baked beans on top. John came out and asked if our food was good, it sure was! Make sure you stop at Puny John's BBQ, it's a must! read more

The best Mac and cheese I have ever had in my life and I don't even really ever like Mac n cheese!!! It reminds me of Italy because of how soft the noodles are. The potato salad is amazing also. I went with family while visiting Tombstone and I had the puny pie which was pretty tasty mixture of brisket, beans, and Mac and cheese, but it wasn't really that special, it mainly tasted like BBQ sauce. I enjoyed their spicy Mac and cheese which I got as a side. I missed out on the ribs which they said ran out in the first two hours. There was also some seating outside which is good during COVID. Overall it was ok BBQ/ Southern cooking but I've had better in Nashville, Boston, and that I've made myself. read more

When in Tombstone we were told we had to eat here. The bbq had great flavor and I love the selection of sauces. The service was fast but not the best. The atmosphere could use some sprucing up, but I guess it is Tombstone. It was worth a stop on when you are there checking out the old west. read more

Barbecue is one of those things that is highly subjective, it's hit-or-miss and just what is GOOD barbecue is widely debated. It's a topic that people argue about over and over and over again. Having said that I've enjoyed barbecue from one end of the country to the other. From the east coast all the way across to the pacific ocean; in backyards, out of gas stations, out of food trucks, from roadside stands, fancier BBQ restaurants and even famous BBQ "competitions". Puny John's BBQ is good, not the best, but good. The place is small. It's a little mom-n-pop shop just off the main street of Tombstone and they do a good barbecue. It may be a little hard for some to find it, but it's worth going if you enjoy barbecue in all it's forms. The sandwich I had was large enough to fill me up and even without any sauce tasty enough to be worth eating. Still juicy without being too greasy or oily, tender without being too dry. Somebody knows a bit about barbecue and it shows. If you just need a bite to eat while in Tombstone it's definitely worth stopping in and giving them a try. While they may not be THE BEST, they sure aren't the worst, and I'd go back again. read more

Not a fancy place, casual and comfortable, with indoor and outdoor seating. Really good food. The portions are large. The potato salad and spicy baked beans were my favorite. Many barbecue sauces to try from mild to very spicy. This was a local recommendation that did not disappoint. If pulled meats and barbecue are your forte then this is your place. read more

For a tourist town this place serves GOOD BBQ, and lots of it! Chili was good as well. Service was good and more importantly they are taking Covid seriously. Outdoor seating is really nice and folks were friendly. read more

Folks, if you love barbecue, head straight to Puny John's when you visit Tombstone. In a friendly family restaurant atmosphere, Puny John's serves juicy, falling-off-the-bone barbecue that you're sure to remember for a long time. I eat a lot, so when I got there, I wanted to order a full rack of ribs. I had been cheated before at restaurants that give you skinny servings that caused you to have to get up to order another meal. Not here! The owner was quick to alert me that a full rack was quite a bit of meat! So I ordered a half rack of their splendid St. Louis ribs with a side of potato salad. Holy cow! The portion was just perfect, the meat was heavenly, and Puny John's pairs it all up with an assortment of sauces that are guaranteed crowd pleasers. I loved their Sweet and Smoky and the Ass of Fire. The latter is very spicy but not overwhelming; the two sauces combined very well for me. Barbecue lovers, take note! You can't visit Tombstone without trying out the best it has to offer. Witness my attached picture in which I am making love to my plate of ribs! Can't wait to go back!!! read more

This place is on 4 th street off the main road in Tombstone. I have to say that after seeing the sites, this was the only thing that made the visit to Tombstone worth it. Skip the saloon on the main drag with the long lines and head here. There was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating as well as live music. I had the tri tip sandwich and pulled pork sandwich. Although the pulled pork was good, I would say that the tri tip sandwich was one of the best I ever had. It was perfectly cooked medium...super tender and juicy. Tried it with three different sauces and liked the prickly pear the best for it's tanginess and just the right amount of spicy. Sides of potato salad and baked beans were great too. Service was fast in spite of the line. read more

Best food in tombstone! Mac and cheese and green beans excellent! We had pulled pork and chicken as well as Tricia-tip and sloppy John all party members in agreement. Chicken needed more spice not necessarily hot. Baked beans are good, they are flavored with molasses if you're into that. They have a gluten free bun too! Visiting Tombstone and desiring something other than bar food, a shop owner steered us to Puny John's BBQ. My friend and I sat down after the lunch rush and noted the staff was busily serving customers attentively. I noticed the owner was in his office and I introduced myself. My sister in law owns "Millie's Bakehouse" in Silver City NM and offers pulled pork and smoked brisket that everyone raves about. John gave me a tour of his smokehouse (pictured). Well he didn't disappoint. The rack of ribs were outstanding. Puny John's is a family owned and operated business. His children work behind the counter, serve and bus tables. Decent bbq but I have an issue where brisket and pulled pork are indistinguishable. Usually brisket is served sliced. These guys serve it pulled like pork and the flavor is almost identical to it. read more

Some guy on Main Street shared this place. We had pulled brisket, pulled pork and ribs. It was amazing! The sides- potatoe salad, coleslaw and spicy smoked Mac n cheese was delicious!!!! You will not be disappointed. Owner even let us view his smoke house out back! read more

VERY expensive for subpar BBQ. Oily Mac n cheese, small portions for the price and pretty bland. Nickel and dime you for everything including sharing a plate and dry gluten free buns that we pulled oMeat is good, not amazing. I'm sorry the manager of this establishment is angry I do not like grease filled mac n cheese. You are right, every restaurant in tombstone is equally sub par, but they were not grease soaked. read more

I own my own smoker, and put a lot of miles on it, so naturally I can be pretty critical of bbq, but this is one of the best bbq joints I have been to in my life. The spicy mac and cheese was the best I've ever had. Coleslaw had a hint of horseradish, perfect on their pulled pork. I'll have to try your brisket next time I'm in town. read more

We stopped in at Puny John's specifically because of the yelp reviews, and I have to say that this place was mediocre at best. I fully realize that Tombstone is not known for its cuisine, but this place did seem promising for sure. We had a brisket sandwich with Mac and cheese and slaw. The brisket was totally cold- did not expect it to be piping hot- but it was cold. The Mac and cheese was probably made four days ago. The meat was dry, nothing special. We also had the ribs which were greasy and wet. Completely unappetizing. The staff was not all that friendly either to be honest. I wish I could tell you a better place to eat in Tombstone, but this really missed the mark for me and I felt compelled to write this review specifically because I went there based on the reviews left here. read more

Wanted to grab a quick lunch in Tombstone and I'm always a fan of BBQ. This place seemed no-nonsense enough to be great, and it was. Very friendly greeting and instructions when we walked in. The menu was extensive but also simple - it's just a matter of what you want. My cousin and I actually elected to share the ribs dish and for lunch, it was more than enough food for the two of us. Fall off the bone ribs, good and tasty sides - overall a great dining experience. We left satisfied and not stuffed - a plate to yourself will be a filling meal. This is the best BBQ in Arizona! Since moving to Phoenix almost 19 years ago I have tried to find great BBQ and have failed! Mediocre BBQ is all over AZ! The pulled pork is so tender it melts in your mouth. The macaroni and cheese was homemade delicious! I also loved the sweet and spicy BBQ sauce however there are 5 sauces to choose from. We were there for an early dinner. The big 24oz "Big Ass Beer" is only $10! I had the Tombstone Tea (basically an spiked Arnold Palmer - very good!). We shared a burger. It was big! Well cooked and plenty of fries. It was karaoke night. We didn't participate but there were some "regulars" who sang. Very entertaining!

I'm like, "I'm sorry I get that there's just no visible menu to order from" and she starts berating me that she doesn't write the website. She's so incredibly rude, at this point I'm literally holding the phone with my mouth open. I ask her what her name is and she HANGS UP THE PHONE ON ME. I call back and ask to talk to the owner because that sh** was OUTRAGEOUS and she denies hanging up and suddenly insists she didn't hang up the phone. I get it's a small town but no amount of ignorance or lack of socialization calls for that level of rudeness. Next time, just say you don't take call out and maybe update your information so people don't call asking WHAT YOU SERVE.

It was worth the wait, and our only regret is that we hadn't prioritized trying it sooner. Everything was magical, from the laid-back, hippie atmosphere of the street it resides on to the experience once inside the establishment. What makes this even more notable, and further enhances the experience, is the lack of similar dining establishments in deep southern Arizona. One can find fine dining in Tucson, over an hour away and far too far for a simple evening out. That's not to say there aren't decent or good restaurants in Cochise County. However, none excel in all aspects of an evening out experience, from greeting to service to the quality of the meal. We had a reservation and were seated immediately at the only table open in the restaurant. That is a plus for their table management. Within two minutes, our waiter appeared with water and bread. Expressing our joy at this proper start to the meal is impossible. In eight years of living in southern Arizona, we have often observed management and wait staff at other establishments taking five minutes or more to arrive at the table. That delay typically foreshadows a lack of basic service that follows. The bread basket featured freshly baked country bread, accompanied by a small plastic ramekin of butter. We would have enjoyed the butter served more elegantly, but that is a minor matter. The bread was excellent. We had heard that the restaurant's appetizers are a highlight and decided to try three: a fresh bacon, apple, arugula, and beet salad, Mussels Meuniere (which were specials), and Arancini. The salad was beautifully composed with just the right amount of dressing to highlight the flavors of the ingredients. The Arancini may have been the best I have ever had. Perfectly fried balls of tender risotto set in a delicious tomato sauce were an unexpected treat. The mussels, unfortunately, were the low point of the meal. Overcooked and rubbery mussels in a tepid sauce that lacked depth and flavor were a major disappointment. Still, that was the only disappointment of the evening and didn't detract from the rest of the meal. We chose two specials for our main course. My wife selected the Salmon topped with a deconstructed Clams Casino. I opted for chicken cutlets topped with eggplant and a dollop of pesto, served in a rich Roman mushroom tomato sauce. The Salmon was incredible. Perfectly cooked and nestled on a plate expertly nappeed with a sublime sauce, it alone excited the palate. But when topped with a well-made clam casino mixture, the dish became an epicurean delight. The chicken was masterfully prepared and was highlighted by the silky-textured eggplant that topped it. The Roman mushroom tomato sauce was well made, my only minor comment being that a different choice of mushrooms might have taken the dish to another level. That said, I would order it again, and probably will if it's on the menu when we return. The dessert selection had me wishing for a larger stomach. Every item on the menu and the specials board looked enticing. We settled on a Basque Cheese cake with blackberries and bananas. We could not have asked for a finer way to end the evening. Perfectly cooked, silky cheesecake in a subtle white sauce and topped with dollops of fresh whipped cream provided just the right amount of sweet and tart to end the meal. I still maintain they absolutely deserve four stars because I suspect the kitchen might have been having an off night and the food was very good (just the meatloaf was a tad salty). We really enjoyed the mushroom appetizer and the beer selection is excellent.

When it comes to ribs, there is no equal. Puny John's BBQ has consistently smoked racks of ribs to perfection. The meat falls off the bone completely revealing the smoke rings on the bones signifying just how much flavor is infused to the meat. On top of that, John isn't stingy and actually gives you full racks of ribs unlike other places that give you half the amount and charges more. That's it, in Cochise County, and probably Tucson as well, there is no where else I will be getting ribs. I can't go back. Puny John's BBQ has a customer for life. read more

Favorite and absolute best food in Tombstone!! Actual homemade food, meats smoked on site and sauces and sides created in their kitchen.
