Food was good! We started with chips and guac which was seasoned nicely and was a chunky guac (tomatoes/cilantro/onions). We had never had Salvadoran tamals before so we tried the chicken one which was okay. It's slightly softer than a Mexican tamale but very similar. My sister got a Kolashanpan which is similar to the Puerto Rican kola champagne but just orange! I tried the chicken and cheese pupusa which was tasty but the chicharron, frijoles, and cheese pupusa was my favorite. I did top it with the cabbage and salsa that they provide which provides some extra crunch that I like. Knocking off one star because for an early Friday afternoon with not many patrons, I felt our overall service was slow (not the cook time but actual waitress timing to take drink order, check in, etc.). Would try again but as a takeout order since pupusas generally take a little while longer to cook.

SO good. Everything was delicious. I had the pork and cheese and then beans and cheese pupusa. The pickled cabbage is too good. And the fries were yummy. Very friendly service. Can't wait to come back.

This place has been bookmarked for a long time for me. We tried to come on Labor day recently but it was packed and we were hungry so we decided to come back another day. This time we came for an early dinner on a Saturday and we were the first ones to sit down. The sitting area is made up of tables of 4 so if you come with a bigger group you will have to combine some tables to sit together. The menu is vast but they are known for their pupusas. We tried the mixtas, solo chicaharron and the pollo y queso. All of them were delicious and made to order, so it does take a little bit of time. The outside was a little crispy and the inside was cheesy and hot and soft. Eat them with the pickled cabbage side they give to you- which itself was super tasty. We also got an order of the pastelitos de carne- those were good the outer shell was super crunchy and the inside had a lot of flavor to it. The huaraches de al pastor was good too, similar to a quesadilla except it was thinner and more fried. It comes topped with tomatoes, lettuce and crema. And we also got the atol de elote- a hot corn drink with cinnamon and milk. This was delicious and I will definitely come here on a cold day just for this. I have never had it before nor have I even seen it available on any place I've been to before. Creamy, hot and good, tastes like corn yet sweet and not savory. The staff is phenomenal here and super nice as well as the other customers that were dining there as well. I will be coming back!

Don't pass this place up! Family run, freshly made papusas!! Pick it up to go or dine in. They have you covered from the cabbage in bags ready with their salsas ready! We dined in, it's like your grandmother patting papusas in the back of the kitchen. They make them right there & come out steaming hot!! Service is what you would expect when something is being fresh made. They have El Salvador decorations. The ambiance is comfortable. We will definitely be back! Our favorite were the mixtas & chicharron with cheese! My son got steak tacos & loves them.

Good food. Love the pupusas. Skip the empanadas. However, the el Salvadoran sweet empanadas were on point. I also recommend the tortas. The overall service was great. Great place to go if you want something outside of tacos. read more

whole in wall made to order place....my colleague and I were in area and stopped in for a quckbite but turned out to be a 1 hour affair. The pupusas are delish and very filling. My favorite was the one with a vegetable/flower and cheese. Next time I shall try the tamales for sure. ...I can bet the horchata had a drop of kaluha but that could well be my imagination. All I can say is...OMG! The food here is amazing!! I had two chicken and cheese pupusas with rice and beans. I have never had this dish before. Let's just say that I'm a huge fan of el Salvadoran food now. I loved adding the cabbage coleslaw and hot sauce to my dish. If you can't handle hot sauce, the mild is just right. I promise. If you choose the spicy hot sauce, your mouth will be on fire but in a good way. It's pretty tasty. I also tried the pork rind pupusa. So yummy. The waitress was extremely helpful. Their beef empanadas are AMAZING. You need to try this place! I tried their chicken and cheese pupusa too & they were really good! Only "downfall" was that it took awhile for the food... but I understand now because it was so hot & fresh. Def worth it! read more

This is a wonderful little restaurant on Oakton, in Des Plaines. It can be easy to miss, so just look for the green awning on the south side of the street, half way between River Road and the UP Tracks. Between White (traffic light) and Orchard to the east. Once you're in, the staff is friendly and there are plenty of tables. This visit I just got carry out, but I also hadn't reviewed our previous visits. This will contain mostly my last, but also pieces of our previous visits. The food here is fantastic! Their Papusas are delicious and memorable, though a bit bready for my tastes. Still, a lot of fun with some great ingredients! Their Mexican fare is great. Their tacos are fresh, and burrito is full of meat. I loved both their Al Pastor and Carne Asada. With your meal, dine in or carry out, they also include a great pickled cabbage, which I've only seen served for meals in Central and South America. The prices are also very reasonable! I came in to place an order for 2 pupusas to go and was not even acknowledged by the employees when I walked in... instead they walked away from me. After I placed the order she told me it would be a 45 minute wait. So I came back after 45 minutes and was ignored again. After I asked about my order she said it wasn't ready yet and walked away. I understand they can get busy so I waited. As I am waiting a man walks in and he is greeted pleasantly and they ask him what his order was ... 2 pupusas to which he was told to come back in 15 minutes. I felt like they were being extra rude towards me - I cannot possibly imagine why. I'm so disappointed because I was so excited to come and try them for the first time. Very rude staff. read more

Pass this place every day on my way to and from work and never stopped in. And now I'm regretting all those drives because it is amazing! The pupusas are fresh and delicious! We had the the jalapeño and cheese, chicken and cheese, and the bean and cheese pupusas and they were beyond fabulous! We ordered 15 minutes before closing and the owner made our order fresh! The salsas provided were spicy and another mild (loads of garlic ). Can't wait to try all their menu items! Side note, they have delivery through Door Dash, but if you can swing by for pick up you can meet the friendly staff! read more

I've been going to this place for many years, but not recently. Heard it changed hands a couple years ago. Today's lunch experience was disappointing. There must have been a new cook in the kitchen because the papusas looked completely different than they used to (see photos by other reviewers below). Ours were huge, ill-formed, burnt/ugly and very greasy - stacked like pancakes. Unappetizing. What has happened ? And, the service was a disappointment. We waited and waited for our plantains side order to arrive. Each time we asked about it, the waiter said it would be right out. Finally I told the waiter to just forget it. Without batting an eye, he said "okay". No I'm sorry, no explanation, nothing. I think he forgot to put in the order and didn't want to admit it. I hope they can correct this situation. read more

This place is a hole in the wall GEM! Thanks to Yelp we stumbled upon this after shopping around for countertops. We tried the chicken and cheese papusa, bean, cheese, and pork rinds and both were absolutely delicious we upgraded to make it a meal for $2.50 more which included beans and rice. The beans were much better than most refried beans but the rice wasn't exactly my favorite! My husband got the three meat pies which were like empanadas and also very tasty. They cook everything fresh so it took about 15 min but well worth it. It comes with a cabbage coleslaw and hot sauce that makes the whole experience worth going back for. I would definitely come again if I find myself in the area. read more

Amazing pupusas. We usually ¹get mixtas and cheese. I prefer the mild sauce since the spicy is much too hot for me. Have gotten catering from here on the past for a party and they were quick, polite and event helped load the food in our car. Would highly recommend this place. read more

I absolutely LUV LUV LUV pupusas and this cute lil place delivers the real deal!! Place your order and wait patiently for fresh hot food(a novelty) to come. I had the beans and cheese with jalapeño nad loroco and cheese. Also the only plantain tradition and yum. The service is awesome...the beautiful young lady Raquel taking the order and the beautiful Raquel in the kitchen!! I ordered wayyy to much food..even ordered food to go!! DELICIOUS! My husbands first reaction to the storefront was "are you sure about this?". Lol. However, once inside, we found the restaurant to be clean and neat. Service was super friendly but most importantly, the food was delicious! We had several pupusas including the Mixta, and the one with jalapeño. We started with a corn tamale which was fresh and yummy. All food was made to order. Highly recommend this spot! read more

You could easily drive by and not see this place. Make sure you stop and try the papusas. It's a flat grilled sandwich, I guess you could call it that. The mixed one was great. With rice and beans just over $5. Great deal. Get two if you're hungry. It's different tastes great. read more

Me and my wife, we like trying different cuisines. We have never tried Salvadorian food. This was our first time and we liked it. It is your typical small hole-in-the-wall type of restaurant. Ordered lunch for pick up. I love popusas and they were bigger then expected. I had their cheese popusa, chicharron and chicken they were very good. If you eat them with the cabbage salad and salsa on top they are delicious. I also shared a steak huaraché with my coworker, it was a descent size tender and flavorful. I would recommend this place for popusas and huaraches can't wait to try more off their menu. read more

Pupusas are tasty and decent price I got mixtas and queso con frijol and queso con loroco did pay extra for more salsa because I always think any place doesnt give enough salsa the lady at the counter wasnt too friendly but enjoyed the food to go will come back for more read more

Like everyone else very easy to miss. Popusas from here are phenomenal. Best way to describe it would be like a closed gordita. Be advised this is NOT FAST FOOD. It will take a good 10-15 minutes to receive your food but it tastes great! Big ups. The workers are very friendly also. read more

The ceviche, made with tilapia, came out shaped like a fish -- an extremely cute way of plating that caught our attention inmediately. The flavor was amazing, not too fishy, perfectly paired with citrus, and minced small enough that we weren't left chewing our seafood for long. This paired perfectly with the accompanied chips, or if you're me, just eat it by the spoonful because it was that good and refreshing. The molcajete was....insane. You can't go wrong with flame grilled meat piled high in a stone bowl, but each piece had it's own flavor and was so delicious. Though served with homemade tortillas to make your own wrap, I couldn't stop myself from just grabbing the meat on its own. This was the first time I tried cactus as well, and to my surprise it had just as much flavor as the meat. The salsa that is poured on top of all the meat pools at the bottom of the molcajete after your meal, making for a great treat at the end with some rice. Speaking of rice, their rice is perfectly fluffy and has great flavor as well. I'm typically not a fan of beans but I couldn't stop eating the ones that accompanied our meal...how did they season everything so perfectly? I also ordered the enchiladas oaxaqueñas (mole), but ultimately was served the verdes. This wasn't a big deal for me and I didn't even bring this up since I devoured my plate anyway, but after reading a few reviews have found out that they often are out of the mole sauce and possibly just served me the green sauce for that reason. Something to be aware of in case you were set on trying their mole! All in all, this restaurant packs flavor, quality, and great service. Staff was always attentive and I wish I lived closer to try more items.
