After a school ice skating party at Sharks Ice, my two little boys became fascinated with hockey and begged to learn how to play. Being open to any ask to get their noses out of books and Legos, I signed them up for lessons to learn how to skate. Now you can rent skates from the rink pro shop for $80 per 12 lessons, but given the price of beginner hockey skates, it was actually far more cost effective to buy our own. Gemini swore up and down the best place to get fitted for skates would be Pure Hockey. So here we are. Now as a complete noob to the world of hockey (former figure skater here), I immensely appreciated the warmth, guidance, and patience of Ryan who spent nearly an hour to help figure out the best fit for my little guys. I was surprised to hear he had only been here for 3 weeks because he was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I also appreciate that he would be transparent and shared what areas he wasn't as familiar with and that he is eager to learn more (how young children's feet shape changes over time) - his humility actually increased my respect and trust in him. In the end, we went with two pairs of Bauer XLPs. After fitting, they baked the shoes and had my boys sit still with the boots on for ten minutes to help them better mold to their feet. The folks then immediately brought the boots to be sharpened afterwards as my kids were putting back on their shoes, even before the boots were paid for. And all together the two pairs came out to ~$170, which is an absolute value compared to getting the rentals from the rink by a thousand miles. So now I'm sitting in my car waiting for the sharpening to finish (20-25 min), and still reeling from what an incredible experience that all was. Should my kids continue their enthusiasm for hockey (fingers are super crossed), we will definitely be buying all our gear from here onwards. I wanted to add elbow pads to my adult figure skating routine. Lucky to have a Pure Hockey near by so I can try on the many options and find the set that is right for me. As a figure skater, I have requirements that are different than typical hockey skaters and no real familiarity with the equipment. I was able to see all the different options in person and try them all on until I found what would work for me. I would not have been able to do that on the internet. bought a $360.00 Bauer Flylite goalie stick for my Neice. She waited close to a month to get it. She was so excited when it finally arrived. She's a sophomore goalie for Stang in Mass. Took the team to the state finals last year. After 32 days of owning the stick it chips. I contacted them via email And of course they only warranty a stick for 30 days. What a surprise!!! What's really disappointing to me is the stick is rated very high and 360.00 is not cheap. They never even asked for a picture of it. I can see if it was broken in half and perhaps the player damaged it in anger. I believe it was a defected product. Obviously they don't care what caused the damage or backup their product. I wouldn't recommend buying anything from Pure Hockey. My next call is to Bauer. Maybe they care about their product and customers. read more

$200 hockey bag breaks after 90 warrantee and Pure Hockey doesn't care. I get that sticks and other "on ice" gear take a beating, but a $200 hockey bag should be covered for more than 90 days. The piece that broke is the handle, not something that takes a lot of stress like the wheels. And not just the handle, but the button in the handle that lets you retract it. I took it apart and a small plastic part inside the handle broke. This is just poor craftsmanship, design, and materials. Bauer and Pure Hockey should be ashamed to sell it and should refund consumers for their crappy product. The picture shows the handle's button stuck in the down position. I haven't played hockey in a very long time. I wanted to try to start skating again. Went in, with very limited knowledge. I forgot how skates should fit and feel. So we scanned my feet and tried some skates on. The sizing the scanner said was not what I would have thought. It sized me much smaller. Ended up with Bauer M4s. They baked and sharpened them. Went and skated and I thought that I must have become extremely uncoordinated. I couldn't walk in them, let alone try to skate. BUT THEY HAVE AN INCREDIBLE RETURN POLICY! I brought them back within 30 days, now with new knowledge on what I am looking for and how they should feel. The associate rescanned my feet and it came up the same. But when I told him my foot is moving inside and won't stay in the heel pocket, he knew exactly what model to have me try. Out comes the Bauer Vapor 3X. I put these on and they were exactly what I wanted. (We did try 0.5 size up and down and fit 1 vs fit 2) The fit was so much better. I also had the associate tie the skates after he baked them, since I don't think I was able to tighten them well. I went skating with these and everything started to come right back. Moral of the story is, you really need to try on different models and sizes/fits. You may also think it works in the store, but on the ice, it is different. The fact that they let you return skates that have been baked and sharpened, is priceless. These skates aren't cheap, so you can have peace of mind that you will end up with skates that work for you. read more

Very unhappy with the skates I bought here. My kids got their gear here, and that experience was alright. But when you go to a shop like this you expect to get service and good advice. I was (and I am now again) looking for a set of hockey skates for to just get out on the ice and skate. I made it clear my primary driver is for comfort. These need to be more comfortable than rental skates. Also mentioned I'm not overly concerned about the cost. They scanned my feet, which recommended a wide size - EE. Then brought me a regular width set with standard width and one size down. They fit snug but it wasn't painful (yet). We went with it since it fit, got it sharpened and took them home. The first few times using them, my feet were hurting after about 5-10min of skating. But I passed it off to the "break-in" period. Ultimately after 5 or more skate sessions with no improvement, we made the trek back down to San Jose from SF within the return period to see about a better fit. Rather than returning/exchanging them, they suggested some inserts for better arch support. Again these felt good in store but on the ice my feet were killing me after about 10min or less. If I'm going to head down to a store an hour away for help on something I need to be getting expert advice. Pure Hockey let me down big time. I'm well outside of the return window now and the money on skates and inserts is wasted. They could've made a bit more off of my business and got me into skates I was happy with. Instead they made a bad recommendation and made it worse when I came back to get help with this set. Both my time and theirs was wasted. I also found out that what I have is a youth size, too. So they were trying to save me money by sacrificing comfort - the opposite of what I said I wanted. I was on the ice today and during the breaks I have to take from skating with the kids (I take breaks due to the pain), this is top of mind. I'll probably head over to the other hockey shop in Oakland instead, and try to sell these skates somewhere. read more

Came to buy some hockey equipment for myself as I am interested in joining a hockey 101 class. Came on a Sunday afternoon and spent more than an hour waiting for someone to help me out. There were 2 store assistants and 5 people that kept trying (I kid you not) a million pair of skates. I first called to see if they could clarify the size conversion for me and the associate who answered (I forgot his name) was so helpful and didn't seem to be bothered by all my questions. Came here during their 20% off sale over the MLK weekend. 20% off EVERYTHING in the store was awesome especially when you're buying a $200 stick. (that's $40 off for those that dislike math) I love their stick selection here because they will have what you're looking for. They got different lengths of the same sticks, different flex and blade style. The staff here is very knowledgable on the equipment . I did notice another customer asking a question that the associate wasn't 100% sure and the associate went to double check to make sure the right information was provided to the customer. I ended up buying a pair of pants and elbow pads. and was able to save over $30. If you missed the sale you don't need to worry because there are coupons online from time to time. Also there is a online store as well. I personally like to buy it in the store so I can try it out to see if it's comfy. However, if you're the type to order anything and everything online you can also do that. I checked out their online store as well and their size calculator is extremely accurate. They size their equipment by height. As long as you order the gear within you're height you will be good. Definitely a one stop shop for everything hockey. AWESOME SERVICE as always! I bought my Ice Skates here about a year ago. During that time they offered lifetime skate sharpening on any skate purchased from the store, not sure if they still do. But if they do, its worth every penny! I can say i've taken my skate there at least 10 times to be sharpened. Though my most recent experience, being I haven't played in a little over a month. Winter just ending and the weather warming up, I took my skate there before a game to be sharpened. When I got on the ice the skate felt like it didn't bite as usual. Though there are many variables that may have caused that, I went through the game anyway. Before my next game I brought the skate by Hockey Giant and told them that it felt a little funny. The gentleman took a look at the skate and said he can try to give it a couple passes to see if it'll help (this past sunday at about 5pm). He took it straight back and began to sharpen it as I browsed around. I also brought in a old 2 piece stick that needed a new blade. When I got back to the register with a new blade I picked out my skate was already finished and waiting for me. I asked if they could try to take the old blade off my stick, I installed it previously and it took a lot of hammering to get on. It was a warrior shaft with a bauer blade. They took it to the back and with some effort they were able to get it off! New blade was installed and I was on my way. WOW super cool guys and they took care of everything I needed done in a timely manner! I tried the skates on with the new sharpen and it was SPOT on! Bit exactly how I needed. read more

Apparently Sharks Ice "Pro" shop puts their convenience over players' safety! Several weeks ago I went to the "pro" shop at Sharks Ice to get skates sharpened. Blades were clicking and I asked if bolt could be tightened. They said oh that's normal for skates but if the problem is bigger than it is we'll fix it. Skates still clicking. Went here, Hockey Giant, about a week later to do some shopping. Decided to bring skates just in case they might be able to tighten bolts. Well the problem was actually bigger than it was. Sales associate saw blade had, I think, broken off or something like that. He took off the runner; fixed the blade; added new rivets on runner; etc. 45 min of labor and no charge! No clicking after! Poor guy even injured himself. During this time, which was about a half hour before they closed, another associate was incredibly helpful with tips on glove size and fitting. Friendly and not snobby. Forget the pro shop at Sharks Ice and find your hockey needs at Hockey Giant! read more
