My boyfriend and I came here yesterday and we were so happy with the service! Food is so tasty. Glad to know this spot is close by because I will definitely be coming back! We got the causa rellena de pollo as an appetizer which came with mild pico de gallo and tasted like polenta stuffed with creamy chicken salad. I ordered the pollo de saltado which came with flavorful chicken, onion, tomato, fries and rice. He got the bistec apanado which came with super yummy beef, onion, tomato, fries, and rice. We went with my family to try Peruvian food for the very first time. Sadly we ended up leaving so dissatisfied and disappointed. We ordered a whole jar of juice for our table and honestly it was the only good thing from this place. My daughter ordered a pineapple milkshake and that was gross, we tried it and it was bitter and just had a weird taste, like if it had gone bad or something. Then we ordered our food. Since the menu has zero pictures and the waitress didn't recommend us anything, we took longer to order. My daughter wanted something like pasta or pizza but they didn't have that or a kids menu, and of course the waitress didn't suggest anything or try to help us in any way. The food here isn't that great and not worth the price. Definitely pricey for what we ordered. We ended up ordering 3 plates for the 3 of us and the only good plate was the steak with eggs and rice. The minuta with steak was just ok. The third dish was the worst one. Picante de camarones I think is called. For what we saw on the pictures here, it looked nothing like that, what we got was 2-3 shrimps drowned in nacho cheese sauce with vegetables. When we shared our opinion with the server, she couldn't care less and even though the plate was full, she didn't offer to bring anything else or take it out the bill. We didn't eat it, she saw it was full when she took it back to the kitchen and we still got charged for it. We left angry still hungry and dissatisfied for this whole situation. Definitely don't come here to eat. I'm pretty sure there are many more places where they prepare dishes that are delicious and the staff is nicer and care for the customers. read more

Eh. If you're in Van Nuys and desperate for some Peruvian food like i was, this is a satisfying choice. It's nothing that will blow you away, but it'll get the job done. My best friend works right down the street so we've come for dinner a few times and have never really been disappointed. She swears that they have the best milanesa de pollo she's ever had.....and trust me when I say she's had A LOTTTT in her lifetime. It's almost sick how much she eats it. The staff was really friendly and it had a very homey family-owned vibe that i was really digging. My tallarin saltado wasn't anything special and it was a bit on the dry side, but it did hit the spot and i had tons of leftovers for lunch the next day. I have to say though, i was realllly disappointed with their papas a la huancaina. The sauce was really lacking in flavor and was too thin for my liking...maybe i should give them my recipe. They could learn a thing or two, haha. But i do give them props for serving picarones all day, everyday. A lot of other Peruvian restaurants only serve them on the weekends for some reason. Yes, it's located in Van Nuys. Yes, it's located next door to a pawn shop. Yes, my wife and I walk very quickly from our car to the restaurant while looking over our shoulders. And yes, the food is worth coming here for. We've been here twice now and thoroughly enjoy their Lomo Saltado with both the beef and chicken. For those who don't know this, Lomo Saltado is like the national dish of Peru. If you've never had Peruvian food, then this is what you have to try first. We prefer the Lomo Saltado with chicken over the beef at this particular restaurant because the rib eye steak pieces have been dry. For dessert, we ordered "picarones" which is basically deep fried pumpkin (5 big pieces) and you dip it in a "sugary" sauce. It's not the healthiest looking thing around, but it's pretty damn good. Others have commented about the slow service here and we have shared similar experiences. It's not like the waitress is lazy because I've seen her constantly moving around, but she's probably not the most conscientious person. They just need to add another waitress. There's free parking in back of the restaurant, but it's dark and scary looking, so we park on Friar street which has a meter. Check this place out! read more

I've also had their Sopa a la Criolla, milk-based soup with noodles, rib eye strips, egg. It's so good... not too salty... just perfect. Great for two to share. Anticuchos de corazon were okay. The beef heart was a bit too hard for my taste. They made it well-done when I never ask to be made well-done, because you eat them medium normally. It lacked flavor... maybe they did not marinated enough. For $9.99 a portion of 2 skewers, 2 sliced fried potato, and a thin slice of Peruvian corn (choclo) is over priced. Nice friendly service. Came here at 8:30, they close at 9. Sat down and the woman came up to us and said they close in 30 min. So I asked her if that meant we couldn't order food. Then she said we could but had to leave by 9. This is my favorite Peruvian restaurant in the valley. But I guess my problem is that if you dont want to cook anything at 830 why not just close at 830? Over the years I've come to learn the different layers of South American cuisine. It would be easy to just say it's Latin but you'll come to learn the difference between Brazilian, Argentinian, and Peruvian food. Puro Sabor is easily the best Peruvian restaurant I've been to...however it is the only one I've ever been to. I can't speak much of the place since I always get my orders to go. It's plain, it's quiet, it's simple. The food here is amazing. I always get the lomo saltado which is basically rib eye steak strips, tomatoes, onions, and huge french fries sauteed in some sort of spicy broth. It's comes with a side of rice which goes well with the meal. Occasionally they'll throw in some bread. There's nothing really special about the bread and it's kind of stale and crusty which is actually a good thing. It's great with butter or to dip in that broth/gravy. The other dish I always get is the ceviche. I'm always wary about fish but I have no reservations about it here. It's a standard ceviche...some sort of white fish swimming in some acidic/citrus marinade. It comes with some boiled potato and sweet potato which accents the fish. It also comes with two types of corn, one is a crunchy corn that reminds me a lot of corn nuts. Both go great with that spicy green sauce they give you. But you've been warned that a little goes a long way. One drop is like putting a whole pepper in your mouth. There's more on the menu that I'd love to try but I usually stick with the classics. I stepped out of my comfort zone once and tried Peruvian food, trying something else on the menu one day should be just as rewarding. read more

I love the feel of this hole-in-the-wall Peruvian restaurant I read about in the June 2012 of Los Angeles magazine for "Cheap Eats." The people that ate there were mostly Latino families. The area is kind of "shady" as what some people might think, but I was completely fine with it. I asked for recommendations other than the popular "lomo saltado" and ordered the linguini with beefsteak based on it being the servers favorite dish on the menu, and a Inca Cola. The meal was quite satisfying. You start off with a roll with the spicy green sauce and butter. They out came my order. The linguine was very tender and had a very light flavor to complement the beef steak which was cooked just right -- not too chewy and flavorful. Don't expect the best service here. Just be ready to be pleased a simple, no frills Peruvian meal. Parking on the street was easy to find or try to find parking in the back of the restaurant. I will definitely be back next time to try the lomo saltado and their popula pumpkin donuts I've read about here on Yelp. Total with tip = $15 read more

Out of the four peruvian restaurants in the vicinity Puro Sabor is the better choice. Papa a la huancaina is a great start. The sauce is a lil spicy and done just right. The bistek a lo pobre is a must here. Nice slab of Tender meat cooked perfectly never dry or chewy. Very flavorful with fried banana and red onions served over rice The Lomo saltado is what most prob know of and that's a plus here too. Nice size portions easily enough for two people to share. Worst place ever! My food had hair In it and they refused to give me a discount! They instead offered a dessert. This makes anyone feel uncomfortable even eating the food! I don't recommend it and if you do go eat make sure you check your food. Yea my food was already half way that's when I realized my food was mixed with the food how was I going to know my food has hair and what a coincidence in both of the lomo saltados. I've been to Peru twice, and I'm crazy about the food there, so when I found out about this place, I had to try it. It's the best Peruvian food I've had anywhere nearby, from the West Valley to the Peruvian restaurants in Sherman Way near the 170 Fwy, and the only one that comes close to stacking up to it is Lima Cuisine in Tarzana, an altogether different experience, as it's noticeably more upscale than this little hole-in-the-wall. So far, I've had the sopa a la criolla, which was good, and the lomo saltado, which was even better. I've *never* had sopa a la criolla nearly as good as I've had in Peru, but the lomo saltado comes close to what I've had in Peru. The beef here is tender, and the general taste is quite good. The service was slow both times I've been here. The first time, the waitress spoke little English, and I ordered in Spanish. The second time, the waitress was very fluent in English, and answered a couple of our questions in nice detail. read more

This is incredible Peruvian food. They also have some smoothies that sound amazing...but I didn't order. The food takes some time to get to your table, but the wait is well worth it. The service is friendly and the prices are reasonable. I had the Lomo Saltado Puro Sabor. It was off the charts good. I also got Passion fruit juice (jugo de maracuya) and it was perfect for a warm day. They have interesting Chinese influenced dishes on the menu. Had to ask for lime and Aji because it wasn't either spicy nor lemony enough. Decent portion though. Service: Never got my water. Server seems confused. I ordered the Tamale: steamed saffron corn dough with chicken. Where was the chicken? I got lots of dough, not much chicken and it was dry, tasted like cardboard. Yuca a la Huancaína: fried casava with cheesy sauce. The Yuca was great! The sauce not so much, tasted like a thick velveeta spread, what a bummer. Palta Rellena: avocado stuffed with chicken was the worst offender. It looked beautiful but didn't deliver. There are many Peruvian restaurants around this area and decided to stop by this one because it was close. They toast and serve old rolls with individual packaged butter. There was only one cook, like most mom and pop restaurants around here, so make sure you give them 20 minutes to prepare the food. I went with the Lomo a lo macho (seafood with rib eye) for $14.90. The "ribeye" "strips" we're extremely thin and was disappointing. Most of the meat was very lean and did not look like ribeye (my favorite cut). The strips were the same size as shoestring potatoe chips. However, the calamari and seafood were cooked with perfection, very tender and flash fried in a Chinese wok. Verdict: Nothing special. This place on the other hand serves you a plate of saltado de camaron that is pretty dry and the point of this dish is to have the aju for the rice and to give flavor to the dish potatoes,onion, protein you may pick either way i asked the waitress to let mari the cook in charge to make sure the second dish to make sure it wasn't as dry as the first one and we'll it was worse it's as if i asked make the next one drier so when it got to the table i asked the server juli what had happened and she said she let the chef know already and i said i'm so sorry it's not youre fault. it's ok the chef mari came to my table and said if you don't pay for it the waitress will have to pay for the food you don't pay in disbelief i said you can't do that to her it was youre fault you did not take the correct order from youre server and decided to make the dish as you pleased. on top of that my husbands saltado de steak was dry and also lacking in flavor. I love this place so much. I always order the chupe de camaron, lomo saltado and fried seafood rice. I can't believe that there's a really great peruvian restaurant near my place. The bread with green (aji?) sauce, while common amongst peruvian restaurants that I have eaten at is particularly great here. Not sure if its the spicyness or the salty kick. But I obsess with the thought of coming back just for this appetizer. I have never had chupe de camaron anywhere else but I can't imagine it to get any better than what they have here in this restaurant! We are Peruvian and we love to spread the word about the deliciousness of our gastronomy!Our experience at Puro Sabor was a huge disappointment overall. We ordered the following dishes. Here are our comments: Causa de Pollo (the layer of potato was tasteless and not spicy), Papa a la Huancaina (B+, one of the few dishes made well), Ceviche (the lemon that needs to be used did not taste fresh Bottled? Weakly spiced.) Aji de Gallina (tasteless, not spiced). Lomo Saltado (If made well, it should have plenty of its own juice, but, alas, it was pretty dry). The Chicha was overly sweet. We were hungry at the end (not ever the case) so we figured we could fill it in with some dessert. We ordered picarones which were good (except they should have been brought out as soon as ready -- especially with few customers in the restaurant!)
