First time at Putter's patio and grill. I found it by looking up the best hole in the wall restaurants in Winston-Salem. It did not disappoint upon arrival I was seated right away. I ordered a putters pale ale, which is made locally. It was very delicious! For my meal I order the steak lunch special. It was very delicious as well. I was also told I needed to order the golf ball potatoes. They were perfect with the Gorgonzola ranch. I definitely recommend this place. If you like good food in Winston-Salem. read more

This place was delicious, efficient and so fast!! I love that it's near the colosseum. Went before a concert and we were seated quickly. It was a Saturday night and packed but we were in and out in 30 minutes! All the workers were busting their butts! My friend and I split a chicken Caesar wrap and a chicken Philly! So, let's get one thing straight: this place is good, and I have been coming here for years. I often get the jalapeno nacho cheesesteak. Jalapenos, nacho cheese, steak, simple, and delicious! This is also the epitome of family-run businesses; they have been here for decades with the same ownership. Even though I had not been in the restaurant in over 12 months, one of the regular managers recognized me and struck up a conversation about where I had been and what I had been up to. That kind of service and care is not everywhere, that is for damn sure. This is a great little dive bar to take friends and family out for an honest meal an a zesty adult beverage. They have a huge beer menu, and while their menu is a little limited (vegetarians seek other places to eat) everything on it is delicious, I have always gotten some form of "steak" here, and never been dissatisfied with my choices. My son and I had lunch there on Friday. The parking lot was packed but we managed to find a spot. We love this place as there are so many different items to choose from. They are known for their steaks but they have other good things as well. (Fajitas, burgers, salads, buffalo wings, subs). It was nice so we decided to sit outside. The waitress came and took our drink order while we studied the menu. I ordered the chicken salad sub with buffalo chips as my side and my son had the southwest steak sub. with slaw. We came here as a party of a 9 around lunchtime on a Tuesday. I called ahead letting them know we had a large group coming in. They said they do not do reservations, but when we arrived, they luckily had a table reserved for us. The parking lot does get crowded as this place is a hit for locals. I ordered the teriyaki chicken Philly with sweet potato fries. I enjoyed my meal and no major complaints. The food came out in a reasonable time frame. We were going to stop somewhere else to grab lunch but they were extremely busy so we quickly looked at our Yelp bookmarks to find somewhere else in the area. My wife remembered seeing Putter's featured on social media recently which sealed the deal. Our guess was they are associated with a golf course and I was preparing for a golf course clubhouse experience. However, she told me she thought it was a small, hole in the wall that gets rave reviews and has quite a following. We pulled into the parking lot and for sure it was a small place but I did not see a golf course. The exterior looked like it could use some TLC and they have an porch/patio area that is protected from the rain. We walked in through the front porch area and entered the main part of the building. My wife approached the bar and we were told we could pick from a table in the bar area or a booth in back. We chose one of the tables and they brought us menus right away and took our drink orders. The interior decor had many references to golf and Wake Forest. The restrooms are to the right and there are booths to the left. The ceiling looked like it had seen better days. We did see their sanitation score on the wall and it was a 94%. We were seated at a two person table in front of the bar, provided menus and offered drinks. The menu's have all the basic bar food items but we appreciated the fact we could order their Homemade Potato Chips "SOFT" just like we like them served with ranch and ketchup. My wife decided to order the lunch steak special (8 oz. ribeye) with grilled veggies and I ordered the patty melt with tater tots. It felt like many people knew each other and perhaps had a past connection. Our potato chips arrived and looked delicious, we were able to bend them and the smaller pieces had a little crunch. We really enjoyed them! We finished the potatoes just about the time our meals arrived. My wife thought the steak was delicious and the veggies were good but next time she wants to try the hand breaded onion rings which we noticed another table eating, they looked yummy! The lunch special is a ribeye with a side for $17 and some change. It makes for a huge lunch and the ribeye had great flavor! The curtly fries were good too. The definition of a dive bar in all the best ways. For years people have been telling us to check out Putters and I'm excited we finally did! This is a no frills, minimal decoration dive bar but they're slanging out excellent food and service. We sat on their lovely and modest patio and decided to order a few sandwiches. We got the steak + jalapeño and a BLT with fries and a side of their ranch and honey mustard. The steak was perfectly cooked, tender and beautifully seasoned. This is a great, neighborhood dive bar, in ever positive sense of that term, and a Wake Forest hangout on game day, it seems. The building is a bit on the shabby side (or perhaps that is just aged elegance), the parking lot is rather small and convoluted, with only a few spaces clearly marked as such, slanting in different directions on each side. The inside is much the same - worn, with a chopped-up feeling, a small back room to the left with booths and TVs (not as many or as large as in many of the recent additions to the sports bar scene, and the available viewing angles are not always the most desirable) - a small bar with stools, with several long tables opposite the bar area along the windows, a few high tables on the right side, and a large patio. The menu here is more or less typical of restaurants of this vein - a nice selection of Appetizers, mostly the usual suspects, but the Golf Balls (small, whole potatoes that are deep fried and served with your choice of sauce) are great and different; a selection of Salads, a number with your choice of protein added running in the $12 - $13 range; Burgers, Subs, nice variety of Sandwiches, including a Prime Rib Sandwich consisting of 8oz of meat - taste was good, not great, and the meat was beyond med-rare; and the usual Fajitas, Tacos, Wraps, and Tenders. What is a bit different here, is the reputation for serving very good steaks - a reputation that seems well deserved from the various reviews. The Lunch Steak Special (an 8oz Ribeye cooked to order with a side) goes for $17.75, and is not available after 4PM, pushing the evening steak-eating diners to the considerably more expensive cuts - 14oz NY Strip, Ribeye, and Tenderloin Tips, as well as an 8oz Filet. They are served with a side, a salad and bread, and are just under $40 each. There is also a 14oz Bone-in Pork Chop for just under $26. They offer a full bar, with a decent selection of bottled beer, and a smaller number of choices for draft. The service I experienced was very good, and the Pime Rib Sandwich at $17.75 with a side, was good, and the sheer size of it provides value. Not exactly a Cheers type bar, but a warm, friendly place with some good food choices. read more

My family and I have been eating at Putters for 20+ years. We started going when we lived about 10 minutes away in Forsyth County (at least once a week!). Now that we have moved to Davie County, we still eat there (although we don't go as often as we did!). I can honestly say we've never gotten a meal that was not as expected. The steaks are amazing...we've ordered every single one of them but our favorite is the NY Strip. Our daughter used to order only the twice-baked potato but can no longer eat that due to a restricted diet. Her favorite menu items now are the seafood tacos, fajitas and pimento cheese burger. Service has always been top-notch! The ambiance may not be that of a 5-star restaurant but remember it's a bar in a building that has been there many, many more years than we have been eating there. read more

I hadn't been here since college (aka 15 years or so), and the place is still exactly the same...in a good way! It feels like your neighborhood bar where everyone knows your name. The servers are friendly and helpful, and the food is some of my favorite bar food ever. The classics are the philly's and cheeseburger sub. They are messy but well worth it. Looks are deceiving! This place looks like a college dive bar. Beer is cold - great selection of local craft. App selection is awesome! We chose Cheezy Chips. Chips were crispy. Several cheeses and bacon bits were very good. Steaks are the best. The choice filet at $35 was the best we ever had - better than other local steak places. Cooked just right and served with an amazing twice baked potato and green beans. The teriyaki chicken Philly sub is incredible. An 8" sub role, toasted, and loaded with chicken, onions, mushrooms, and sweet peppers. Side of fries were perfect - crispy and crunchy the way fries should be. Service was great. Quickly seated. (I would avoid Wake Forrest football and basketball dates.) My only complaint would be food service was too fast. Not quite enough time between app and entrees.. We had quite the unfortunate experience here on a Saturday evening at 8:19pm. We were staying at a hotel next door and wanted to walk over to have a beer. When we walked in the manager (?) greeted us by saying the closed in 41 minutes in the rudest tone and told us we weren't going to be able to "party" there. The waitress explained that we just wanted to have a round of beers and no food and he told her "I don't care" and then suggested she should seat us outside. We ordered one round of beers at the bar and carried them out to a patio table ourselves. No one ever came over to our table. 20 minutes later a table of 10 walked in. They sat them at a table outside by us and gave them menus and they were all able to order drinks, appetizers and dinner. We are here for a graduation and the locals in our party said that this is how the service is every time they go. read more

Putter's delivered on all 3 and then went above and beyond our base requirements. The onion rings were definitely homemade. They were slightly oily, but they're onion rings, so that's to be expected. The chips are also homemade and they were great. We shared some wings at the table, and they were good. And we're always happy to drink beer from Wiseman. The thing that stood out during both visits was the excellent service. Despite being busy, the wait staff were on top of things, helpful, efficient, and nice. She said: On our second visit I got the veggie sub and it was really tasty. I would absolutely get that again. My friends have been telling to try this place for a long time. I finally made time to take a trip and I don't regret it! The menu has a great selection of different types of food. My sub was packed full of chicken, cheese, banana peppers, onions, and mushrooms. When I grabbed half of my sub the cheese pull was top notch! 5.20.2022 We had a very enjoyable lunch here on the patio today. Despite it being a *very* warm day, the covered patio with oscillating fans very pleasant. We were helped immediately by a very friendly waitress who got our drink orders. I had the Eagle Burger (American cheese, lettuce tomato mayo) and it was great; juicy, hot and yummy - I felt like a tiny bit of salt would've been welcome on the burger, but that's just a preference. I got the buffalo chips as my side - I didn't get much "buffalo" in the flavor of the chips; but they were still delicious; crispy and hot. Great sweet tea that was always kept full. My husband got their homemade chicken salad sub with lettuce and tomato, and he enjoyed his as well. We were checked on by several members of the staff and all were very friendly and gracious.
