First of all thanks to all the Yelp reviewers for the great reccomendation!!! This place was exactly how I had hoped for it to be for the special ocassion. I went here Monday night with my fiancee for his Birthday dinner. I had made a reservation few nights back for 8:00 pm. We arrived 10 min late, but the hostess showed no irritation at all, they seated us as soon as we got there. The restaurant was beautiful, the decor had a greek charm, the ambience and lightings were very romantic and the staffs were great. We decided to start with a greek wine (limnio porto carras) that our waiter reccomended. Followed by Salmon Cake for appetizer to share. They also served us a complementary greek bread and a dip. For entree, i ordered the 'garides kai hteniame slatsa ouzo servirismena me hilopites'. The shrimp, scallops over the greek egg noddle was delicious. My fiancee ordered 'cretan-honey braised lamb shank' which he enjoyed very much. The portions were pretty big. We had absolutely no room for dessert. But it was a birthday dinner and I had already told the hostess about it when I made the reservation. So, they served us 'christos' towering galaktobourekakia', these traditional greek dessert triangles with a candle and a birthday song. Very tasty! Overall we had a great expeience with this place. Went here with a friend to grab a bite for dinner on a Wednesday night. He had made a reservation so we were able to be seated upon arrival. After perusing the menu, we decided to split a few items: Pita and bean spread (4.5 stars): This bean spread was really tasty and the way they grilled the pita was great--the combination of the two was excellent. Pear and arugula salad (4 stars): This salad was super refreshing and flavorful, with the stars of the dish really being the chopped pear and the creamy sheep's milk cheese. Salmon (4.5 stars): This dish was really enjoyable as the salmon was cooked perfectly and paired well with the sun-dried tomato and olive sauce. Pork shank (4 stars): This was also a solid dish as there was a ton of meat and it just fell off the bone because it was so tender. In addition, I loved the leeks--they were a bit stringy but the flavor was fantastic. Overall, this place serves up some great food and has a great ambiance. The service was friendly and attentive and all the food came out quickly. Definitely a great spot if you're looking for Greek food in the neighborhood. read more

This restaurant is unbelievably excellent. It was an accidental find, one which I came across in New York Magazine. I was scrambling to find a restaurant for dinner with friends after our original choice had no tables available between 3:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The day before the get-together, I stumbled across the Pylos listing on New York Magazine; confirmed its decency on Yelp (thanks, guys!) and made a reservation. The only table they had for our medium-sized party was at 5 p.m., so when we arrived the restaurant was basically empty. It is a very small establishment, but very well-kept. The clay pots hanging from the ceiling make for an interesting decorative touch. Since it was mild outside, the restaurant had left the wide glass front doors open, and our table was situated right where the restaurant met the street. It was very nice. Our waiter was attentive without being overbearing, and was helpful at explaining the selection of wine and Greek beer when people in my party asked about them. The staff also offered to close the front doors for us as it got colder out, which we gratefully accepted. To do this, they had to move our table and we had to get up and walk to the back of the restaurant, but it was worth it. Once ensconced at our table again, everything was quite cozy, and we could still people-watch without being cold. The food on the menu is exceptional. We started off with several appetizers, including a platter of Greek yogurt, eggplant and roe with pita bread; veal-stuffed grape leaves, of which I did not partake, so I have to take my dining companions' words that they were good; and fried zucchini, which I enjoyed, although the portion was so enormous I couldn't finish it. Dinner consisted of poached salmon for yours truly, leg of lamb for Friend 1, lamb chops for Friend 2, fish with lemon and capers for Friend 3, and some sort of seared steak and potatoes concoction for Friend 2's husband. Words do not do justice to my wonderful salmon dish, which included rice with spinach, and was garnished with a sprig of dill. I would definitely trek back to the East Village for this dish. We were offered a dessert menu at the conclusion of dinner, but we were all so full that we didn't end up even glancing at it. Instead, we walked across the street to the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop and contemplated that massive line of people waiting for ice cream on what had turned into a genuinely cold October evening. Since I love Greek food, I am so glad that I found Pylos. The restaurant, while small, is quite cozy, and the staff seems dedicated to ensuring that all diners have a pleasant experience. I did not think that anything could compare with that Greek restaurant extraordinaire, Eos in Stamford, Conn., but Pylos is now vying for the top spot in my gastronome's heart. Soooo... we live uptown so don't come often but love the food and decor. Made a reservation...seared near the door (not ideal) and ordered a bottle of wine and 4 appetizers. Were immediately told that the entrees "take 30 minutes to prepare"... okay? As the appetizers arrived we ordered two entrees ...which were served in less than 15 minutes! We have had good meals here in the past, and try to return when we are in town. I love the ceramic potted ceiling as well as the over all decor. It is a small cozy restaurant, a perfect place for Greek food. We started with the horiatiki village salad. Tomato, onion, kalamata olives, feta, cucumber in a olive oil, red wine vinegar, herb vinaigrette. Then the whole pompano which they grill, debone , and cover in olive oil and lemon. Simple, and delicious. Our second dish was chicken stuffed with a mixture of raisin, rosemary, thyme and kasseri cheese. Had to try it because it sounded different. It was hard to believe that those were the correct ingredients because the stuffing had no hint of any of those flavors. Instead I got a kind of mild liver earthiness that was a positive adjunct to the chicken, and paired nicely with my red wine. I had no idea what these Greek wines were, so I described what I was looking for to our waiter and he found something close to it. This dish came with a hash of zucchini, eggplant, and potato that was as tasty as it was healthy. We stopped there, very satisfied, and looking forward to our next visit. read more

I went on a date here for the first time about 2 years ago and have been a loyal customer ever since! I love the warm, upbeat atmosphere. We typically order a bunch of appetizers to share with the table. 5-6 are plenty to fill a group of 4. I can't get enough of the Saganaki! Order Diane's Light-As-Air Meatballs to dip in the Saganaki cheese. It's absolute heaven. The Piperia Gemisti Me Kafteri Feta are delish - roasted red peppers stuffed with yummy feta cheese! I love beets and really enjoy the mint/feta mousse they pair with the beets in the Patzaria Psita Me Kopanisti Apo Feta Kai Dyosm. Their traditional Greek Salad is also good. Everything comes proportionate to share. I have only been able to try 2 of the desserts and have unable to tear myself away from them to try anything else. Christos' Towering Galaktobourekaki are delicious custard-filled pastries drenched in honey and cinnamon. The Mouzo is a creamy, chocolate mousse spiked with Ouzo. read more

Really, I haven't had anything I don't like from this rustic restaurant that serves traditional Greek cuisine. Their complimentary pita is warm and fluffy, served with a truly delicious bean and olive oil dip. You can get even fancier by ordering their poikilia, a trio of fancy dipping sauces--a fish roe dip for those that like things salty, a yogurt dip for those that like something tangy, and a grilled eggplant and olive oil dip for those that like a little bit of texture. Some other appetizers that I consider scene-stealers would be their classic grilled octopus which has the perfect bounce and char, plus their three Greek cheeses melted together in a hot clay pot--REALLY cheesy and smelly (in the good cheese way). Their entrees are a very decent size, especially for the price. The braised pork shank was pretty good, but the lamb shank was even better and more tender. I have also tasted the lamb chops and short rib--both great. My favorite, however, was the whole branzino--so fresh and less heavy. It comes with a simple olive oil and lemon juice dipping sauce that I love--don't know why I don't do this myself at home more often. I also really enjoyed the shrimp and sea scallops in a creamy tomato sauce. Again, pretty big portion size for this! Went this Sunday for brunch. Very quiet laid back vibe. I like their ceiling with hundreds of water pots hanging over, very interesting design. Ordered tzatziki yogurt dip, classic grilled marinated octopus, pastitsio, grilled baby lamb chops with side dish greek yiayia's fried potatoes. Everything was very very good. Esp the baby lamb chops, might be the best I've had in Manhattan, even better than Taboon and Turkish Kitchen. Home made pita bread is also a plus. Service was very attentive and friendly. They raised the price so it's a few bucks more every dish on their real menu compare with the menu on their website. The total meal was about 72 dollars before tips. My new favorite restaurant! I had some family in town (aka need to impress & dont have to worry about the check!) so we tried out Pylos, and I have to say, its damn good greek food! We ordered about 6 different appetizers & the lamb shank to share. The appetizers were perfect, sizable & delicious. It was a fabulous way to taste many different dishes without having to order several entrees. My favorite: the eggplant and artichoke moussaka although the meatballs are also a strong contender. I love this place. It's my favorite restaurant on 7th... I love the claypots hanging overhead and the ambience. I've gotten take-out here once (if you prefer to eat in the privacy of your own rooftop) and eaten dinner here twice. A note on take-out: even though there is a take-out menu, they will still honor requests from the regular dinner menu, so don't think your options are limited! The order was ready at the pick-up time. Painless. Dinner: I walked in once during the week. The place had a good crowd. We were seated immediately at the communal table in the back by the bar. Which is a pretty nice, intimate experience, albeit different than table dining. The other time, I made reservations on Sat afternoon for that evening. On the phone, they'd said that only the communal table was available when I bumped my res from a 2 to a 3 but when I arrived, I was surprised with a nice corner table by the wine racks. I was seated immediately even though the rest of my party wasn't there yet. Service was attentive since the moment I walked in. Our request for more pita bread and the check were all turned around timely. I got a nice glass of a full bodied red (not sure what it was called, but I think there was only one - two options). Now, on to the food: Cold appetizers: - poikilia (trio of dipping sauces): you get a generous portion of tzatziki, fish roe dip, and grilled eggplants with warm, fresh out of the oven pita bread. Note, that this is in addition to the complimentary pita bread with spicy, beany dip. This was quite a troop to get to from the 6 train. But my monthly girlfriends dinner are well worth the trip. Upon arriving early on a Weds night, I was seated in a comfy cushioned area with back support. The claypots hanging on top gave it a unique look, reminded me of ippudo's ramen bowl display. Apps : the grilled octopus was so tender, slightly chard and juat enough flavor that kept me wanting more. The meatballs were ok, I probably wouldn't order again. Entree : we all shared the baby lamb chops, pistashio crusted sea bass and the shrimp and scallop over egg noodles. If I had to rank them, I would pick the pasta, lamb chops then the sea bass. Im never a fan of lamb, but this was cooked perfectly and NO gaimy taste! The scallops were melt in your mouth delicious. One of my fav was the free piping hot soft pita bread with hummus. I wanted to have a good meal while I was on vacation in NYC and Pylos did not disappoint. My friend and I both ordered a nice red wine that the waitress recommended to start. We ordered the moussaka, some phylo pastries stuffed with cheese, and indulged on the complimentary pita bread and yummy dip that was perfectly seasoned. We also ended up ordering dessert, which was a chocolate mousse which was decadent and thick. Perfect for 2-3 people to share! The ambience in Pylos was fantastic with nice mood lighting and mirrors everywhere giving the illusion that it was very spacious. The wait staff was very attentive and I was very pleased with the experience. I would recommend getting a reservation in advance though on weekend nights, because it can book up quickly. Pylos has been consistently good and serves slightly updated versions of very old Greek and Ottoman standards. Over the past few days I stopped by several times so I'll describe both experiences because both were consistent: We ordered: - Pistachio crusted fish: good taste but dry - Pastichio: Think lasagna with the tomato sauce replaced by bechamel and no mozzarella cheese; served in a individual crock: excellent - Taramosalata: fish roe mouse: very good but I thought it needed more lemon - Avgolemono soup: excellent - Maroulosalata (romaine lettuce, dill, and scallion salad): good - Mousaka (baked with layers of eggplant, meat sauce, bechamel): very good Service was aloof and lacking and the overly eager bus boys made sure that the plates were cleared--whether or not we were finished with the dish. Wine overpours were rampant consistent with the service of untrained waitresses. Nevertheless the overall experience was pleasant and the food keeps us returning. read more

Pylos is always in my top three recommendations when people ask about my favorite restaurant in NYC! From start to end the food is consistently wonderful; I first discovered this place in 2014 right after an amazing trip to Greece, and the pita, taramosalata (get it in the trio of dips!), moussaka, lamb chops, and fresh fish transported me right back there. Since then, I've been back many times with family and friends and have always left very satisfied. The ambience is also very warm and the dining room is beautiful. I came here for my birthday and had the best greek meal in my life. Interior is beyond cool and interesting with clay pots on the ceilings, ambience is classy and lively and food could not be better. Check, check, and check!!! What more can you ask for~ We started with the pita and the three dipping sauces and hummus. Every single one was SO good and I could've just had the dip and dipping sauces and hummus all night with my wine. We then ordered the moussaka which was very yummy and the octopus which was so tender and well cooked. We then ordered the lamb shank and the lamb chop as our mains. Best lamb chops I've ever eaten. My husband and I were out with another couple, who we just so happened to go to Greece with last summer. Also, one of our best trips.... The six of us came here for dinner on a Saturday night. I loved the use of clay pots on the ceiling as decor. The atmosphere is classy but not stuffy. For appetizers, we shared the fried zucchini and eggplant rounds, phyllo pastries and meatballs. Of these 3, I liked the meatballs the best. The other two were just a-okay. For my entree, I shared the lamb chops with another girl (we each got two). Even though we asked for medium rare, these could have been much more tender and were a disappointment to me. Best Greek restaurant in the entire lower Manhattan and perhaps in Manhattan as a whole. Greek salad (horiatiki salad) is absolutely a must have and it's to die for. I'm always stunned with the freshness and quality of vegetables they use, and feta is amazing - I almost always ask where they get it from because I cannot find anything of this quality in stores to make the salad at home. The closest to it is imported feta from Lesbos that I found in the Essex market in one of the cheese shops. Going back to Pylos: We love their whole Branzino dish as a main to share (best for 2-3 people, depends on how hungry you are), and we also ALWAYS order the artichoke Moussaka - this dish is phenomenal and it's so much more than it's meat version. My partner and I absolutely love this place - we've been here 8-9 times and we will keep coming back. Staff is always perfect, never had anything to complain about the service. They are also very generous and patient when it comes to wine - their wine list consists of mostly or entirely of Greek wines, with which many people are not familiar - I always rely on them to recommend something based on my tastes, and they always bring me a sample to try and it is always spot on. read more

This place leans towards 3.5 for me. It;s like a first date that was not "Meh" but there wasn't enough sparks for you to feel fireworks, but there is some chemistry there to come again - explore more. Okay, I'll stop with the first date analogy - but basically I might need another go to feel more. Atmosphere: Small and intimate. This is perfect for a small birthday dinner with friends or date night. Decor is pretty and it's not noisy or anything. Food: Delicious food for sure. I came later than the rest of my party so I cannot comment on the appetizers (they were yummy when I nibbled but I missed out). For my entree, I ordered the lamb chops that came with the eggplant and potatoes. Loved them - and I finished every morsel on my plate. Service: Good service - not over the top or anything. Didn't blow me away or anything - food came out in a timely fashion, servers were attentive and nice, just nothing exceptionally good or bad to say about the service. Patzarosalata (beets)- Very good, but again, can get elsewhere. They serve complimentary hummus for dinner. We rarely return to a restaurant again and again due to the huge plethora of options in NYC but Pylos is one spot we always crave and never tire of. Go get the: Horiatiki classic Greek Salad, Avoglemono egg lemon soup with chicken broth and orzo, Fried potato wedges with Greek Sheep's milk cheese, Fresh fish with extra virgin olive oil, Fried zucchini & eggplant crispy rounds with amazing smooth tzatziki sauce and ask for a basket of warm fluffy pitas to dip in the best olive oil I've ever tasted. Pylos was neither memorable nor impressive in the flavor of the dishes and the execution. I'm surprised at my experience given how highly rated this place is. I do like the atmosphere with the blue trimmings on the interior walls and clay pots hanging from the ceiling. It does remind me of actually being in Greece, which is very cool. The food, beautifully presented, was lackluster. Maybe it was what we ordered. The octopus, one of my favorite appetizers to order especially at Greek places, was the biggest letdown. It was burnt on the ends to a crisp had an unpleasant overly smokey taste. I've had smokey octopus before and enjoyed it, but not so much here. The meatballs claimed to be "lighter than air" on the menu but were actually quite dense, tougher to chew than expected, and didn't have the flavor to justify the heaviness. The scallops were nicely grilled and I liked the bean salad it came with, but was otherwise not remarkable. The artichoke heart moussaka was fairly unique but not something I would get again -- I remember it being surprisingly cold. I did enjoy the 3 dip appetizer that we got to start with the warm pita, but its hardly a reason to come back. So sad, I really wanted to like this place! Might give it another shot in the future but not excited to come back after the first time. read more

Delicious - one of my favorite in the East Billage. Great atmosphere and authentic Greek food just like when we were in Greece.

Came here on a date with my boyfriend. We take out from here all the time but he hadn't yet eaten at Pylos in person. Completely COVID friendly and food is UNBELIEVABLE as always (we got the 3 dips, halloumi, and horiatiki salad--all so delicious, but especially the taramasalata. It's the best in the city). Like someone picked it from a garden and mashed it minutes before being served on the table. I was a bit bummed about there not being baklava. The one star is strictly for their customer service. If you can't get both: good service + good food then it's a complete fail. I can cook a good meal in my own home, but I go out to have fun and be pampered and if I can't get both then what is the point! Stay away. You can find a lot more good places in the city with friendly service. In short: my girlfriends and I came here based on a google recommendation. We show up and they tell us it'll be about an hour, so we walk across the street to get a drink since we couldn't sit at the bar here and no available tables. They call us, and we literally miss the call by one minute and they had already gave up our table. We tried to reason with them and their reply is "based on our statistics, we can't hold the table for more than one minute because it'll be a no show". It took him more time to argue about the fact that he can't wait for more than one minute to give up our table than to actually just seat us!! And for the record the table they had for us was still paying their check when we got there, but still decided to seat others. read more

Giving this place 4 stars but felt it was a little closer to 3.5. We got the three dip trio for an appetizer which was great. We also had the Greek meatballs, they were crunchy on the outside and moist in the inside, well done! For my meal I had the poached salmon over rice pilaf and I have to say I was very disappointed. The meal was completely flavorless. No salt, no lemon nothing. I wouldn't get it again however the presentation was flawless. My boyfriend had the patsisico which was very good, I would recommend. The place was busy and the staff was attentive which was nice. The seating if very close to one another, I heard the two couples conversations next to us for every word. Everything about my experience at pylos was dead-on! I had a great date, great wine, great food, and more pita that anyone should ever eat. We decided to order a ton of meze platters rather than full entrees. The waiter, who was a delight, recommended that we order 3-4 each. So, of course my date decided to order about 10 of these "little" plates. As the dishes kept coming out, it became comical. We ordered the combo of dips (eggplant puree, yogurt, etc), grape leaves, artichoke moussaka, haloumi, octopus, scallops, meatballs, beans, etc. I didn't even get to try the scallops! I love love love homestyle Greek food so much. Me and my friend were excited to get a last minute reservation for Friday during prime time hours :) The decor was cute and elegant. You can either sit near the windows and people watch or sit inside where there are coozy booth settings. the waiters are attentive and food is served pretty quickly. We ordered 4 apps + 1 entree : grilled octopus, grape leaves, 3 types of hummus, salmon cakes and short ribs. The food here sounds great, but I wouldn't know. We had a reservation, we're sat down, and then told they aren't taking any orders from anywhere between the next 10 minutes to 2 hours due to an issue in the kitchen. We were then told we could order drinks if we wanted to. No explanation, just that we can't order food. I understand things happen, but no solutions or apologies were offered. We had no idea why they weren't taking any orders, why the time frame, and were not given any apology for what was was going on. We would have been happy to wait if they gave us drinks and ANYTHING else to hold us over until we could order, but we got nothing but a blank look from the waiter. Wow what a world. Our table of five split five appetizers and three lamb plates. Arthur was extremely helpful in picking out a wine that would compliment the meal perfectly. This is a cute little restaurant. We didn't have reservations and they were fully booked so we waited for the communal table. It's a bar really and the setup is super cute. I really like the clay pots on the ceiling that everyone talks about as well as the grecian blue and white colors. The staff is ultra friendly. From the hostess to the bartenders to our waitress. We ordered the spread sampler which consisted of taramousalata, taziki and egg plant dip, the grilled octopus, the lemon chicken and egg soup for apps. My fav were the soup and octopus. Full of flavor. Not much of a fan of the taramousalata. We had taramousalata in Greece and it's supposed to be an airy cavier spread not dense and full of mayo. For the entree we shared the lamb chops. These were tasty and tender. I asked for them medium and they were cooked perfectly. All the food had generous portions and we were stuffed. read more

The ambience and service is great. We got in around 530 and it was empty but by the time we left around 7 it was packed! Depends what you're looking for but if you want a quiet meal go early!! We ordered the salmon and lamb , in my opinion a little salty but despite that flavorful and delicious. We also ordered the halumi cheese and dipping sauces. Also both really salty, and the halumi could have used more grapes or some sort of sweet contrast , but regardless it was still really good. Get to the Chase: Pros: 1) Huge portions! Love it! Like a real aunt taking care of you! 2) A few dishes were out of this world!
