We had just moved to the Richmond area, and we wanted barbecue. The employees here are super friendly. The barbecue was delicious, and the prices were very reasonable. We ordered the 3 meats platter with ribs, brisket, and pulled pork. They were all delicious. The Mac-n-Cheese was awesome as were the baked beans. My son ordered the kid's brisket and hush puppies. This BBQ joint is pretty much always consistent. Almost as if clockworks, though i did have a scare and order something here the other week and everything was just salty. Luckily that was just a one off event because gave them another chance to redeem themselves as I knew they would do. EVERYTHING and i do mean EVERYTHING was delicious. I always have a great experience here. The food is on point. The service is always friendly. My kids and I always enjoy stopping by for a meal and the selection is great as we always have different tastes for dinner. Recently, I had family in town who needed glutten free options. Q has great selection and if you advise they will ensure to take precautions and use different gloves to ensure no accidental illness. We enjoy the Bbq here. The have a great family meal that is available to go that is reasonably priced. The also cater and you can do a large Togo order and "cater" it yourself. The only improvement is I wish they had actual vegetables to eat in addition to the greens which are on the sweet side. Not really my favorite. Baked beans don't really count as a vegetable. I chanced on this place driving through Richmond. I wanted a quick bite of tasty BBQ and I'm really glad I found this spot. The ribs were excellent and the BBQ sauces were all tasty. The portions were fairly generous too. I ordered a pineapple side which was not at all the pleasant surprise I expected. It was a sort of pineapple bread pudding or cobbler thing which I have never had before and now want all the time. The service was great and though it's more of an order and sit place rather than a restaurant, it has a very pleasant restaurant feel. Okay, so long story, but I was supposed to go see Against Me! at GWAR-BQ today but ended up missing them by minutes. Minutes people. I had tickets a month ago to see them. I was heartbroken, crying in the car heartbroken (don't laugh). So, I drove back to Mechanicsville looking for some food to soak up the hurt in this [true trans] soul rebel (bonus points if you knew the reference). OH BOY DID I FIND IT. I got the half rack of ribs with brisket beans and hush-puppies. More like, "Yell to everyone that walks in the door to order these puppies." The definition of flaky on the outside and fluffy on the inside is an understatement. Against Me! couldn't even harden the outside of these bad boys! And the beans, Oh. My. God. Flavorful, tender, chunks of brisket floating around in the thick amber liquid that just oozes "I was slow cooked beeotches!" (Can I say that?) And last but not least, the ribs. THE RIBS. Remember that old Lizzie Maguire movie where they sang that "This is What Dreams are Made of" song at the end? Anyone...? THESE RIBS ARE WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF LIZZIE!!!! They are crusty on the outside, juicy tender goodness on the inside. I hate to get political but, these are the Bernie Sanders of ribs; hardened by the environment around them, a bit of bite, but have such great soul. My lord I will be back for sure, hopefully after I finally make an Against Me! concert and am not soaking up my sorrows in calories (which there is no shame in by the way). We're all friends here, right? So I'm going to let you in on a guilty secret...I went here THREE TIMES WITHIN FOUR DAYS. And this is saying something, because -- except for my dad's famous ribs -- I'm not a fan of BBQ in general. So either I'm officially insane or this is good stuff. Probably both. Anyway, Q is a great addition to this part of Glen Allen, which is sorely lacking in culinary diversity and finesse. In a sea of chain restaurants, Q is a welcome addition. I was skeptical of this location because its previous incarnations were an Italian restaurant and then pizzeria, and I wasn't really regretting the demise of the overrated Smokey Pig five miles up the road in Ashland. What sells me on Q's are the quality of their meats, friendly staff and clean, attractive interior. When dining out, I see food as either fast food or sit-down, and my experience has been mixed with the "order at the counter, then wait for it to come out" process...but Q's pulls it off really well. The person bringing it out is always cheerful when serving, and asks if anyone needs anything else, including drink refills. I enjoy the fact that their meats come out "unadorned" and not smoky - they're lean and tasty, and there's very little gristle or fat in their beef brisket, pulled pork or chicken, and ribs. The selection of sauces (original, sweet, or spicy) isn't remarkable, but I was quite content with a small squirt of the original. I agree with the other reviewer who said not to put anything on your BBQ until you've tasted your food. This kind of BBQ (whatever it is) isn't sauce-laden; to me, it's one big homage to the glory of meat. Lots of it, piled high and hot, waiting for an appreciative carnivore. Q offers a plethora of side items, and all of them are tasty or made with a twist, and there's something for everyone. Most noteworthy (and my favorites) are the potato salad, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, and hush puppies. The "hot pineapple" dish (very evocative of a pineapple upside down cake or bread pudding) is interesting but too sweet for my own palate, though it might've been interesting to eat it WITH the meat. The 'fresh cut'-looking fries were surprisingly disappointing, with a weird, chemical-tasting coating that not only is repulsive but really detracts from the taste of the BBQ altogether. I wish they'd serve the good ol' crinkle cut or shoestrings instead. This is a family place and thankfully I haven't come across unruly or boisterous toddlers yet. The staff is very genial and keeps the place EXTREMELY clean. Give it a go - BBQ is one of those things that we too often "politicize" - I couldn't tell you if Q's is better, worse or the similar to NC, TN, TX, MO, etc...who cares? It's yummy. And this is coming from a girl who once said that BBQ was invented to hide the taste of rancid meat. Kudos to Q's for their bare-nakedly delicious version. No surprise that they've won a bunch of trophies and made me happily eat my words. read more

My wife and I have been eating there ever since it opened and it is one if not my favorite barbeque restaurants. Having said that, our last experience was disappointing to say the least. My wife ordered our meal two hours before our pickup time. I arrived and gave the man my order number. He said that that number didn't mean anything to him and wanted to have a name which I gave him. I asked him why they gave us an order number if it didn't mean anything to him. He didn't answer and pointed to list of orders and told me I'd have to wait fifteen more minutes. After a twenty minute I received my order. The barbeque was overcooked and dry and the onion rings were greasy and essentially burnt. I realize they were very busy, but didn't expect this type of attitude and poor food quality. My rating is based on our last trip only. read more

My wife and I have become regulars here. Its important to note that this is not for barbecue only. If you know someone who loves barbecue, but don't want to partake yourself, they offer an excellent, fresh salad and lots of sides that you can make a meal out of. Three points: First, (obviously) the food is first class. My personal favorites are the chicken wings, the greens and the pineapple hot dish. Second, it is very consistent. If you like something here, you can go back in a week or a month, order the same dish, and be confident you'll get the same wow experience. Third, it's super clean. If you're like me, you wouldn't want to see where food is being handled and stored in most restaurants. These folks have a big picture window in the room where the food is prepared, and it is spotless. Maybe not important to everyone, but, to me, the minimum requirement. read more

In my opinion, the trouble with reading reviews for chains like this is that--BBQ is best when made with TLC by an experienced pitmaster,and when it's not--results can vary. For example, contrary to other reviews, the ribs I had were cooked perfectly. Not falling off the bone but came clean off the bone with a simple pull or tug. They had a wonderful crispy bark that added texture to the sweet meaty center. The only issue I had with the ribs is that they weren't smoky enough. Unfortunately, the brisket and pulled pork were also lacking any serious smoke that you'd expect from even the worst BBQ fare. I also had the mac and cheese that was nothing above pedestrian. I wanted to like this place, I'm a Tuffy Stone fan. But the food (three stars for the ribs only) was as cookie cutter as the predictable "Chipotle-like" vibe the atmosphere itself emitted and really lacked any character. There's no way this place could compete with even a decent mom-and-pop BBQ stop. read more

The quality is good for this small, Richmond chain. My only gripe is that the portions seemed smallish by comparison. My wife's pork was a very, very small portion. Frankly, I am embarrassed that I didn't return it as it was that small. There were several sauce options and the Original was my favorite. The place was squeaky clean and the service staff friendly. Absolutely loved it! I should have taken a picture but I didn't even consider writing a review when I stopped in...because I usually dislike BBQ. The only reason I went in was they were the only restaurant in the plaza with WiFi and I need to do some work. I had the rib plate with two sides and it was perfect. The ribs were moistures and meaty and needed no sauce at all! Although I had to at least try the original sauce, which was spot on. The greens were delicious with a hefty portion and just the right amount of sweetness as well as acidity! The Mac and cheese was scrumptious and perfectly prepared. The first time I laid eyes on a Q at the Midlothian location, I was attracted to the cute sign. Come on, the pig noes? I loved it! My husband and I were so excited for the location to open by VCC, so when my husband found out that it was opening on Valentine's Day, we made a date of it (and marked off the first stop in our Richmond Food Passport!). The crowd was huge, but the staff was friendly, helpful, and handed out coupons for our patience. We've been back several times since, and have enjoyed it every time. I prefer the brisket and the chicken. Both are tender and melt in your both tasty! I love their garlic infused vinegar on the spicy BBQ (and I'm not generally a Carolina style fan!). The brisket being cubed threw me as I'm used to the Texas style, but the owner explained to us why it was (to keep in moist!) and quickly told us the story behind Q. I've had to watch Pitmasters a few times since! We've been back several times, and every time has been delicious. If you're getting take out, you can probably get away with getting the kids portion sandwich -- it's plenty big and significantly cheaper. And if it's not quite enough, just make sure your friend gets enough for you to steal some from their plate. :) And don't skip dessert -- the coconut cream pie was delicious and the perfect way to end a meal! read more

Avoid anything here but the pork and you'll be pretty happy. Definitely not a BBQ purist's place to come for real Q. Yes, I'm from Texas so I'm a BBQ snob, I have also learned just to not order beef in this part of the country. Virginians are really good at pork, not beef. Texans are good at beef, not so much pork. I pre-judged this place because it is in a strip-center. In my experience, no good BBQ has ever been made in a strip-center. The inside is also very sterile and bland, like any chain restaurant in a strip-center. It is nice and clean though and the service was friendly. The pig snout lights were pretty funny. I tried a sample of the brisket that was offered and it was pretty bad. It is cooked in a barbecue oven and was dry and obviously pre-cut. So I went with pork ribs and chicken, everyone else with me went with pulled pork. The chicken I received was also pulled which I didn't realize, I wish the menu specified that. It was OK, but I'm not a big fan of pulled chicken in general. The ribs were good, I liked those and everyone I was with said the pulled pork was really good. They have a nice selection of bottled beer. They were out of banana pudding for the day. If you come here just stick with something porky as far as meat goes, I didn't think anything else was very good. read more

Not sure but I think the ribs had a brown sugar rub which made for a nice crust. Ribs cooked well fell off the bone but not dry. Rub and sauces were not hot. Beans were robust and I used them over the sauce to flavor the rib meat. Overall nice ribs. Good portion. About average price for a rack. read more

Pineapple - amazing, but I considered it more of a dessert and only ate a few bites sharing the rest with my friends. I was able to try some of my friend's hush puppies and it was amazing. My girlfriend and I work for different companies, but deal with a lot of the same caterers, so we've known for quite awhile how amazing Q Barbecue/A Sharper Palate can be. We heard through the grapevine that their second place was going to open closer to our area of operation, and were ready to pounce on it as soon as they had opened. It was just as incredible as we had expected it would be. This is top-notch barbecue for just the right price. Friendly service by people who are interested in their product, and sharing their thoughts on barbecue with their patrons. Practical and affordable combination meals allow you to try a couple of their excellent sides along with your choice of barbecue. There is Cheerwine in the soda fountain!!! Their pies...eh...tasty, but heavy, complicated, and a little dry. They have the food and service down. But, the setup of this location is just "counter"-intuitive [Wait for it...wait for it...]. When you enter the foyer area, you see an empty take-out counter and a dessert case. From there, you're kind of funneled into a narrow chute, where, depending on the line, you're not really given ample space - and therefore time - to mull over your order. This is a southern barbecue restaurant - these kind of customers are NOT going to be as speedy about their order as the counter setup dictates! Anyway, go check it out. First time here only due to Tully and "BBQ Pitmasters". I truly wanted to try his famous smoked ribs and see the smoke ring these judges talk about. My hubby and I ordered the 4 meat platter ($20) and my six year old ordered the 3 rib plate kid's meal ($10). It was definitely a lot of meats but we could've done without the beef brisket (dry), chicken (meh..), and the potato roll that came straight out of the bag and onto our plate. I had the hush puppies everyone was raving about here and mine was almost burnt brown, however, the inside was nice and moist. We also had the greens which were sweet (?). I like my greens tart and sour so that was quite different for my liking. We also had the onion rings which weren't half bad. Due to our recent visit, I only gave it 3 stars for what we tried. The staff was great and beaming with southern hospitality. The ribs were tender and we were able to take a bite out of the ribs as the judges spoke of on the show. The smoke ring was beautiful. The pulled pork was delicious and moist. I can truly say you can tell the difference between grilled and smoked food here! I definitely will come back when I am in town but will try other sides. I like Q's but the problem with this location is CONSISTENCY. I waited awhile before Yelping about this location and since then I've been to this location several times during different times of the week and what I found was that Friday afternoon is the worst time to eat there. Maybe someone is colored blind, maybe they are sacrificing quality for quantity, or maybe someone doesn't know what they are doing. The food, especially the ribs, were overcooked and dry. HOWEVER, other days that I've eaten there the food was a lot better. Of all days you would think they would pay extra attention on Friday afternoon. Friday, the day that most people treat themselves to a good meal after a long week of work. Friday, the day that most people don't mind spending money because they just got paid. Yes, FRIDAY! I jumped at the chance and ordered a couple items like the pulled pork with slaw combo with onion rings, hush puppies and a very small side of Mac and cheese. I choose the hot sauce at the table and was not disappointed. The manager was very friendly and we talked a bit a the menu. The restaurant was absolutely spotless. Clean and the decor was cool.
