I've only ordered take out from Qi Dumpling, but have known Qi Dumpling as a staple in Oakland for years. Their Ying Yang dumplings and coconut shrimp are addictive, and we don't miss either of these each time we order. On our last order, we ordered the Dragon dumplings and I don't think they compare to the Ying Yang, but they were good and clearly a fave of others. My friend and I came here for some dumplings as we were wanting some kind of comfort food. First impression is that this place is nice with the table cloths and the place looked clean. We started off with the steamed dumplings with pork and chives, and they reminded me of home made dumplings. I have been wanting to try this dumpling place and ordered the Ying Yang, Dragon Dumpling, Pot Stickers and garlic noodles which totaled almost $50. Ying Yang and Dragon dumplings were ok, I wasn't super impressed and not really worth it for the price as those two items alone were over $20 and the garlic noodles wasn't that great as it had a weird flavor to it that I couldn't put my finger on but it didn't taste like garlic. I think the best thing that I ordered were the pot stickers. All in all, glad I had the opportunity to try it but it was definitely some pricey dumplings. However, not something I would go back to again. Came in here before seeing a movie at Grand Lake Theatre and was super happy we did! Qi is casual dumpling spot on Grand Avenue but certainly no hole in the wall. We were greeted and seated instantly, and the server came over with some lemon water. We had trouble deciding just which of the vegetarian dishes to order (and there are several). We finally decided on the Green dumplings, garlic noodles with tofu, and one of the "create your own dishes" with red chili sauce and tofu. The dumplings, which are made to order and take around 15 minutes, were delicious and filling, unlike a lot of other dumpling spots I've been to. The order came with seven perfectly formed, and fluffy dumplings filled with spinach, mushroom, and corn, and a side of sweet soy sauce. The garlic noodles were fantastic with crispy garlic, green beans, cucumber, and cilantro. The cilantro added a nice, bright flavor while the cucumber and crispy garlic added much-needed texture. Yin Yang Dumplings: good, not remarkable. Mostly tasted pork/green onion. Dragon Dumplings: note these use DRIED SCALLOPS. It's an expensive ingredient and highly prized in Chinese cuisine. Neophytes who don't know better have complained to mgmt these taste "fishy". Ummm....yeah, it's shrimp and dried scallops; it's supposed to taste that way! The wasabi soy has no sugar and is delightful. Potstickers. Least sweet of all 3 dumplings, but still too much sugar. Garlic Noodles. Way too much sugar. Sugar and garlic, methinks, doth not mix well. Szechwan Pork Noodles: The sugar overload did bad things to this variant of Dan Dan Mein. Waiter said no sugar was used, but in that case the kitchen must use sweet soya. Think of peanut butter cookies, except in noodle form with a lot of hot chiles....yeah, weird. Overall Qi doesn't make the grade with us. It's a shame, because there's positive aspects: ingredient quality, housemade dips, good service and pleasant décor. But its super-sugary flavor profile is not one we admire. read more

I was really craving some good dumplings after watching a dumpling challenge on YouTube the night before. Qi hit the spot! We ordered the $9 yin yang dumplings and they were really tasty. The jalapeño dipping sauce was a nice touch. I'm not even a jalapeño fan, but it was really good. It is very light in the jalapeño and has just the perfect amount of it. The only complaint I have about the dumplings was the amount. 7 dumplings for $9 is a bit steep. It definitely left me craving more. We also got the Mongolian beef chow mein for $11, which was solid. The beef was super soft and cooked well. We were the only once in the restaurant at noon on a Saturday and the 2 people working were really friendly. About 3 other couples showed up by the time we left. There is metered parking around the restaurant, but we found free residential parking about a 7min walk up in the hills. read more
