SumZero Energy Systems - Somebody has to do it I guess... doing over couple dozen brazes in 140 degree attic is no joke

Great company! Honest people and fair prices…read more If you're anything like me, you hate shoddy work, and in the home remodeling industry, there's a lot of that. I would rather pay a premium to ensure it is done right and the quality is there. SumZero does that and more. We called, and within a day, they sent one of their experts, Raphael G., to quote us for ductless mini-splits to outfit our home. He was very thorough, offering different options that would work for our living room and bedrooms, which are boiling and humid during the summertime. He made the process extremely easy for us to understand and was willing to work directly with our condo association to accommodate their requests. We're still waiting to get them approved by our condo association, as there is a lot of work involved in obtaining approval. However, so far, the experience has been nothing but easy and painless. I'm looking forward to having the mini-splits installed.

UPDATE: A few hours after writing this we LOST ALL HEAT DURING A BLIZZARD. No power interruptions,…read moreit is THE SYSTEM NOT WORKING YET AGAIN. Called only to be told we'd get NO help or support for two days. Our entire house is only around 55 degrees now and we can't safely leave. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. I am so unbelievably upset. We called Friday asking for help and now here we are, heatless with two kids home during a blizzard. ----------------------------------- I waited a long time to write this review because we gave SumZero many opportunities to correct ongoing issues that have existed since day one of installation (a few years back). Unfortunately, we continue to have persistent problems with both heating and cooling. We have two young kids and at this point it is unacceptable these issues haven't been resolved. In the summer, our back room with vaulted ceilings is consistently 5+ degrees warmer than the rest of the house. In the winter, that same room is always about 5 degrees colder. The main living areas also had issues for the first few years, struggling to maintain temperature in the summer and leaving the house humid and unable to hold the thermostat setting some days. After extensive back-and-forth, SumZero ultimately replaced the entire outdoor unit, stating we must have received a "lemon." That replacement was installed this past summer, yet the temperature imbalance in our back living room remains unchanged this winter. Separately, we were provided a mini-split for our partial basement living room. That unit is unreliable and often does not work at night. The settings are correct, we have tried power cycling and resetting the breaker, and it still works only intermittently. It has been set to 68°F for days, yet the room is currently 56°F with no warm air blowing, despite the unit being on. My husband and I have contacted SumZero countless times over multiple seasons and years. Even after replacing major equipment, we still do not have a system that can adequately heat and cool our home as promised. The heat pump system installed through MassSave has never performed adequately in the years since installation. I understand that some older heat pumps can struggle in extreme conditions, but high-efficiency systems (like one we should have received via MassSave rebate with SumZero) should be able to handle New England winters and hot, humid summers., from my research. Ours cannot do either consistently. At this point, we are exhausted from having to address these issues every few months. While the customer service representatives and technicians are polite, no one has been able to properly fix the system. I strongly recommend going with another company if you want to avoid a long-term headache. Photos show mini split remote temp set to 68 but room thermostat shows 56, this is a common occurrence. Other photo shows main house ecobee (new thermostat for heat pump unit) set to 70 (has been set to this for months) but it's only at 65 in reality and continues to go down. The back room with vaulted ceilings thermostat currently reads 59 even though it should be at 70.

I hoped for resolution as a previously happy customer who pays Obie monthly to be members for…read moresystem maintenance. I had 3 minisplits installed in Aug of 2023, which recently displayed an error code. After paying Obie $360 for a diagnostic test, we were told we "likely" had a leak, and we'd have to pay $3600 for a leak search. If it's a defective installation, Obie covers the costs, but if they installed a defective product that failed less than 2 years after install, then we are responsible for the search ($3600) and labor costs associated with fixing the leak, as well as refilling the refrigerant that leaked. They confirmed this scenario would cost me approximately $6000 in total. We pay Obie monthly for regular maintenance as members, most recently a few months ago. Their warranty for labor is 1 year, so if your relatively new system fails, you may be on the hook for several thousands dollars for both search and repair. Obie does cover this issue if it's an installation issue, but we have to pay $3600 for the search to find out. After expressing our disappointment, they offered to do the search for $1975, but if they discover a product failure, this will cost us $3000-4000 more, which doesn't sit well with us considering this system failed due to no fault of ours and with their company's own regularly scheduled maintenance. My advice would be to look elsewhere for a company that has a longer labor warranty and is willing to provide more assurances on how they will address complications if their product or installation becomes defective within the first few years. Obie sold us on these units to last at least 10 years with good maintenance, and now feel I was essentially sold a lemon. I asked to speak with the owner, and was told he was out of the country, then was subsequently told he wouldn't be involved/ would not call me to discuss. I've maintained the search be done at no cost to us, and I'd pay for the labor of a product issue, which I find more than reasonable for a new system, but they prefer to lose my business, my referrals, and my monthly payments for maintenance. I will credit them that communication has been prompt with their operations team, but their expectation for customers to pay thousands of dollars to find a leak on $20k unit installed less than 2 years ago, and potentially paying thousands more to fix it, feels unprofessional, and frankly unethical. As a customer, this is simply not good customer service nor a good value for my money. They will respond to my review that they will stand by their installation but since, I'm out of 1 year labor warranty, but if it's a product issue, I'm expected to assume it the cost of the search, the labor costs, and the refrigerant refill ($1200-2200 alone) so just be warned. I asked to speak with the salesperson who I worked with, as we had good rapport, but I was told he doesn't work for Obie anymore.. also unfortunate. I hoped that Obie would want to partner with us to make this right, but instead customers are expected to absorb excessive costs. Again, I could understand this for an old system with wear and tear, but this was installed less than 2 years ago. Look elsewhere.

When I found it and asked to get the money back, they reluctantly agreed, but placed me on the do not service list. Message received: to continue being their client, you HAVE TO BE OVERCHARGED.
