This food is the fattiest stuff I have ever eaten. It is also amazing. It is also vegan. Yes, delicious super fattening vegan food. It is a sparse dining room with slow service, and a somewhat neglected feel (maybe that just comes with all things Tacoma). I can't really taste the difference between all the fake meat/protein products, but it doesn't really matter what you order cause it will all taste like fatty heaven. I promise you I am not crazy, but this food will give you the Itis from all its fat content. I went here with my mum a couple of months ago...i had heard from a friend that they have excellent vegan soul food...being all about tasty food...and being a vegan, you can guess that i was pretty stocked to try it. So, going out to any public establishment with my mum can be a pain...she's indecisive and picky, and likes to complain about everything(she's french). As we sit there looking at the menu, she complains about the price...i admit they are a little pricey, but COMPLETELY worth every penny...if not more. my mum got the Jamaican wrap and i got the seitan steak sandwich...they put coleslaw in her's and potato salad in mine....i once thought that those things were meant as a side dish...now i know better....i know that the creators of this magnificent sandwich and wrap had been right all along....they were meant to be INSIDE, not as a side....the food was EPIC! So when my brother told me about this vegetarian place we had to try I looked at him like he was crazy. But I went with him just to try something new and I am so glad that I did! This is an excellent vegetarian restaurant in Tacoma. Not too many of those here, so I'm super happy this exists. I've been going here for years and the owners are super friendly and the food is great. Some people say it's a bit salty, I don't mind it. Every time, they bring out a burger that is stacked and I think, "that's all? A burger, some rice and beans? I'll never get full!" and every time I leave perfectly satisfied. It's a bit on the pricey side, but I don't mind because it's a local business that serves something that isn't available in the area. Also, because it is always SO GOOD! :-) I can't quite understand the negative reviews from non-Vegetarians/Vegans who complain about this. Especially the meat eaters who complain, but mentioned that alll of their Vegetarian friends "loved the place." -- I feel like you shouldn't be reviewing this because you probably have a skewed interpretation of what good veg/vegan food is. If you're not a vegetarian, you might not enjoy it... So, don't review it. It would be like asking a vegetarian to review a steakhouse. Don't expect to get meat at a non-meat place. I'd shit all over Black Angus or Outback, but I don't because it wouldn't make any sense to... it's not suitable for my palate. After reading a lot of good things, we finally got around to trying this place. It is definitely one of those hole in the wall places that is literally a hidden gem. Don't expect fancy, and don't expect fast, but do expect good food. My hubby had the the Sweet Jamaican Wrap along with their soup of the day, which was a potato corn chowder. I felt the soup could've used some pepper but he really liked the wrap. I had the Strami Wrap and WOW! It was bomb! So good! We'll definitely go back to try some other things on the menu. read more

This is one of those places that makes you think that it might actually be possible to live a fulfilling life as a vegan. I'll pass on that, but this hole-in-the-wall place has really good food. I usually stick with the sweet jamaican wrap... but have tried a couple other things. I vote this place "best vegan food that will probably give you a heart attack." My visit was about two years ago and the food did not disappoint. Took forever to make it to my table, but I think that's just how it goes at this joint. To me the portion size was extremely ample. There were several kinds of protein on my plate. The smoked tofu and the others were more flavorful than most of the vegan proteins I've tried. There were also greens, Mac and Yease and some other goodness that I don't recall. The biggest thing I remember about my visit is that after putting down a late morning meal there I was so full and satisfied that I didn't eat for the rest of the day. While my brother and I are big meat eaters, we mostly just love good food. That's what you'll find here, or more aptly, you'll find some of the best vegan food around. Yelp worked in this case; my brother found out about this place through the great reviews it's received here. We weren't led astray. Everyone, my mom the vegetarian, the three carnivores, and my two year old burgeoning food-lover niece, loved everything we tried. Mom had a salad that she fawned over, my brother and I had the Frijole Moly burger, his wife had the Crazy Jamaican burger, and my niece had the mac and yease, though the adults ended up eating most of that. All delicious. The mac and yease was especially so. We were the only people in the place because we were led to believe that they were open until 5 PM on Sunday, when really they were only open until 3 and we showed up at about 2:30, so I'm not sure I'm really qualified to discuss any potential slowness in service. The main thing on the plate was polenta covered in a VERY OILY, intensely salty gravy, which tasted "nice", but had me wondering about the calories and the future of my cardiovascular system. It was as if it were drowned in bacon grease, which I would think one would want to avoid if they were wanting to avoid meat. If I knew it was cold-pressed olive oil, I would have felt better, but it didn't taste like olive oil. Overall, extremely high fat and way over the top on carbs. We had planned on a 2:30 movie at the Grand afterward, but instead had to miss it for a nap at home first! Also, there were 3 of us who ordered the same plate. Biscuits came with the plates, but since they were out of biscuits, she gave us 2 waffles instead, TO SHARE on one plate. Not sure why we weren't given a waffle each when we each paid for a plate ...they did taste great, though...with a sweet strawberry sauce and very buttery-in fact, I saw what looked and tasted exactly like dairy butter on them, so I doubt this place is 100% vegan as the sign on the door states, unless there's a substance that can be concocted which emulates butter, and I'm just not privy to it. How could I have been working only a stone's throw away from this place for almost three years and never knew it existed? Wait, I know why ... it doesn't even look like a restaurant from the outside, AND it's in the heart of Hilltop Tacoma among abandoned storefronts and used hypodermic needles. Yum. The food is 100% awesome. I just had the lentil burger at Chaco Canyon, but the Mama Africa burger I had here blew the Chaco burger out of the water. It's made of quinoa (my new favorite food) and millet, and had a lot of other toppings that I couldn't identify (vegan mayo and mustard?) but tasted delicious. The consistency of my burger and the flavor sort of reminded me of a sloppy joe. SO good. Came with a small side of beans and rice. I felt satisfied but not uncomfortably stuffed. My coworkers got the Jamaican Jerk burger and the TLT, and I got a little taste of both. Theirs were like mine - strong, yummy flavors, the meat substitutes had great texture. We went during lunch time but it was pretty quiet. The service was minimal but friendly; and the interior was a shrine to Bob Marley with reggae playing in the background. It was a relaxing oasis. Though I have worked hard to make myself a big city girl, the place my loved ones call home is Gig Harbor, WA and when it comes to eating dinner out Tacoma is your best bet, and it usually isn't dressed to kill. After cruising big name vegan restaurants in Seattle, LA and NYC I had the pleasure of dining at Quickie Too today. It is quiet and warm, the decor is simple and, though plain, is a haven distinct from its surroundings out of doors. This is not your healthy vegan food, it is soul food indeed (**meaning if you think because the food is vegan you are eating healthy, think again- soy products with soy based sauces and oil aren't washing away your sins), but not only is it super tasty, the food is so good my non-vegan, non-spicy food loving friend munched away happily AND this is not to mention that this vegan food blows most of the food competition in Tacoma right out of the water. Quickie too made me want to lick my plate and bring my whole family back, and I am a "no soy" vegan so even going to a soy-centric place such as this was a stretch-who knew I would want to return? We started with the garlic bread and a side of greens (steamed cabbage and collards in a spiced sauce with chilies, dimpled with oil). I then had the TLT with the jerk-tempe which came with a side of rice and beans. The sandwhich itself was messy, spicy, hot and best slathered in the leftover collards. My friend had the Jamaican jerk wrap with tofu which was made the large price tag a bit more reasonable (as it matched the wrap, which was the size of her head). She thought the wrap was filling, had great flavor, and didn't even lend a cue that she was vegan dining. I waltzed out the door with a vegan peanut butter cookie which was hard and tasted of white flour and sugar- and wasn't really anything great at all. I say dessert might not need to be a part of the Quickie adventure. The food here was fun, different, complex and the quiet restaurant deserves more business- once you go you will wonder why you hadn't sooner. read more

Ok the name is really the only problem I see with this place. In no way shape or manner is this a Quickie. There were 2 tables with a total of 5 people when I got there. Took over an hour for our table of 2 to get our food. Having read the yelp reviews I expected it to be a while. I was still just a small bit annoyed. But hey, the menu was even titled Lazy Jazz Sunday Brunch. Plus there are Bob Marley posters all over so yeh. Then the food came. The wonderful food. It was all so good. Not huge portions but my meal had 6 or 7 different items so it was just enough of each item to share a bite or two with my friend without resentment. Brown rice and a biscuit with gravy. Mac and Yeese and some smoked tofu. I know I am forgetting something. My friend had the country fried pepper steak. The price seems a bit high, but you do get a blueberry muffin and a drink with the brunch. Best of all, I did not have to ask to have my food made vegan. It's all vegan! Also, you can buy their very well seasoned Tofu, Seitan, and Tempeh. After eating here you will want to take home some of the goodness! read more

I try not to post review all the time unless its super awesome but here I will. Not because it's super awesome but for a couple of reasons. (1) I want to support local businesses. (2) There are a few reviews here that I believe is ethnocentric and want to just straighten out. (3) The food is pretty good. This is a Jamaican run establishment and in Jamaica a well as any other Caribbean cultures, they run by their own clock. I have gone here where I waited almost an hour for a sandwich that took me 10 minutes to eat. That's not all the time but it happens. The food is excellent, the spices reminds me of my grandmother's house and its vegan -- which I can't seem to find anywhere else in Tacoma. And music is always nice. So... I say, if you have some time to sit and read while waiting for some delicious vegan food, go here. If you are looking for top of the line service (which I expect most of the time when I go out to eat), this may not be the place for you. I ordered the southern comfort, my husband ordered the fried steak and my son ordered the Jamaican wrap. My son and I also ordered minestrone soup. VERY SALTY. Even the greens were salty. Soup was okay and the toasted garlic bread was delicious. My son did not like whatever they put in the wrap. I went to this restaurant over the weekend. Service was pretty good. False advertising though. They offer gluten free fries but the fries are fried in same oil as foods with gluten. So the gal recommended if I have a gluten issue that I not get them. She said the menu is wrong. Uh...ok. I wanted to buy a gluten free cookie. She said they are all gone. Apparently an older woman comes in every day and buys all of them...again uhh ok. Probably won't go back. If you have "real" gluten issues this is not the place to go. Been here years ago and forgot about it. Decided to give it another go. Two of us were vegan and we had one non vegan which would skewer their rating. Since I taste tested their item I can review it as a vegan. I had the Big Burger with fries. Tasted great. It is a big sandwich with all the fixings. The fries tasted great but were very oily. Hubby had the Chorizo Burrito and said it tasted great but could have used a bit more heat or some hot sauce as an option. The third person ordered the Tempeh Salad. She wasn't a fan of the tempeh however I thought it tasted great and the presentation was really nice. We rounded off the evening with two orders of cinnamon banana bread pudding since this was a birthday dinner. It was fantastic. Reminded me of bread pudding in England but not covered in clotted cream. It was tasty without being overly sweet. Our server did a great job. Sorry I didn't get his name. Prices are very reasonable. The lack of 5 stars is because the door had smudges and fingerprints all over it. And to use the restroom you had to go outside to the back of the building. Since becoming a vegetarian a year ago, I've felt at a loss. No regrets on giving up meat, but eating had lost a lot of joy and had become more of a chore, especially when dining out. Quickie Too changed all that. For real. It's like the heavens opened and the angles sang "You don't need meat OR dairy to experience a magical meal". The first dish I tried was the sweet Jamaican wrap with house spiced tofu, smoked seitan, smokey yams, onions, and a perfectly pickled coleslaw which equaled "don't talk to me right now I'm eating a slice of awesome." First thing to note: this place is NOT gluten-free. The bread is all whole wheat and there are a LOT of seitan (pure gluten) food options. Whoever classified them as that was very wrong. Really good mac and cheese - wish you could get a full order but just ordering it as a side means I can always try something new. Definitely comfort food. This is a pretty good place to go if you want to win over an omnivore and it hits the spot when you're looking for something plant-based that doesn't feel like rabbit food. I was a little disappointed by breakfast. This is mainly because it's one of the only places in Tacoma which has vegetarian biscuits and gravy and I thought the gravy was kind of marginal. If they re-tooled the gravy recipe, I'd be sold. I used to see it mentioned a lot in reviews of this place that it isn't in the greatest location. It's not great real estate for a restaurant (extremely easy to drive past) but a lot of concerns were about the Hilltop neighborhood being unsafe aren't too relevant anymore. The restaurant also has a very cool history. It's owners, literal mom and pop couple Niombi and James Howell, became vegan in the 1970s (!) and started the original incarnation of the business in 1991! Very cool. read more

This place is off the chain tasty. I've never been to a vegan restaurant before, but a vegetarian out of town friend was visiting so I thought this would be a good place to try. The outside isn't much to look at, the inside is all Bob Marley and reggae music and the servers were quiet and not very talkative. But the food was unbelievable. We got there near closing and there were two other groups already eating. Food was served relatively fast, but we weren't in a hurry so speed wasn't a consideration. The bill was hefty, but since when is eating out vegetarian or vegan cheap? Food prices for vegetables and meat alternatives are expensive even when you cook at home, so I wasn't expecting a small check. Also, we tried the tacos, sweet potato fries, hamburgers and left with milkshakes. I will be back again, they sell seitan by the pound and do take out. Wow! My family and I were recently treated to a meal out at Quickie Too by my mother. We all began the journey down the vegan lifestyle road a couple of months ago. She had already been here once with a friend and they were both so impressed with it, she wanted to share it with my husband and I. The establishment is not fancy but the fantastic food makes up for any lacking aesthetics. The service is friendly and although I imagine at times it could be crowded and require long wait times, the day of our visit (Saturday) it was quiet and only a couple other customers shared the dining area with us. Good food is worth the wait and with the meals prepared fresh and to order, one should expect a reasonable amount of time for a quality meal. We had our two children with us and so right away I new they'd most likely enjoy the Mac N' Yease. They had ran out of the sweet potato fries so they were happy to prepare the "spicy fries" with no spice for the kids to share. I myself ordered the Friday Nite Fish Fry simply because it offered a wide variety with numerous sides included - mac n' yease, potato salad, greens, corn bread fritter, green salad, plus the tempeh "fish" topped with an arrangement of homemdade tartar sauce. My mom ordered the Seitan Sandwich and my husband the BBQ Burger with tofu. Each of us completely enjoyed our meals, down to the last bite. The flavors, the textures, all of it was so delicious and savory. We even got chocolate chip cookies to go as we left and although they are huge, they beg to be devoured in one sitting! :) The meal for the five of us came to around $64 and honestly, had we gone to any other large chain restaurant, it would have been that much or more for a much less healthy, delicious meal. I had the jalapeño mozzarella burger with a salad on the side and I thought it was delicious. It definitely satisfied me. Whenever I come back to Tacoma I will be coming back to this café. One thing I would recommend they do is to keep it a little lighter on the olive oil. Too much oil can overpower the taste of their food in my opinion. But overall worth coming to this place. -Food- Regardless of it being an entirely vegetarian menu, this place should satisfy some of the most staunch meat lovers with its meat-like creations and unique spice blends. I myself am among the crowd who likes meat and Quicky Too. -Cost- Despite the prices being a little higher than I'd like for most items, (Mostly under or around $12.00) I find myself coming back here often. The portions are somewhat generous for the price. -Service- Keep in mind, the service is much different from what we expect in the USA. My suggestion to loners is to bring something to do. The wait is a little longer than usual, maybe from food preparation or just taking it easy. AND if you find yourself filling your own glass of water at the counter, it's normal. I heard thats just the way things are done where they come from. See if you can ORDER FOOD TO GO in advance if you can't tolerate minimal service at a restaurant. Personally I've never tried so I don't yet know if they do take out, but I think it would be a good idea for the person with a tight schedule. -Ambiance- Overall, the ambiance should be relaxing, always with reggae playing. Inside, on display, are house made brewed teas, colorful image filled plastic menus, and endless posters of Ziggy Marley on the walls. The air is clean and there are many windows letting some light in. Unfortunately though, Tacoma is a mess outside, and most would say this building isn't a great visual improvement . -Conclusion- After getting a taste of Quickie Too's twin restaurant on Capital hill in Seattle, I was overjoyed to learn from a friend that another had opened in Tacoma.
