A great spot for soul food. excellent ribs, tasty green beans, mac & cheese was a little smoky, which I liked, I'm used to sausage in my red beans and rice, but this was still very good. Cornbread was very good. First time for sweet potato pie, not a big fan of sweet potato fries, but but as a pie good stuff. First time going that felt very welcomed we totally recommend. Seat inside was limited, but I took my food to go, but it was clean.

This review is well overdue !!!! I have been coming here off and on for years and the quality has always stayed consistent . this is my favorite Soulfood spot in all of LA and inland empire that I have ever tried. This is the closest plate I can get that reminds me of my southern families cooking. I love the service and it always smells so good when im waiting for my food. The staff does not beat around the bush and they are straight to the point to get you the perfect plate until you come back!! bonus points because I never have to ask for hot sauce for my chicken unlike other places! they know whats up.

WOW, I absolutely loved the oxtails. The meat was so tender and juicy. And the greens were perfectly seasoned. Everything was amazing. And the food was ready quick. Warm friendly staff, clean inviting space. Would definitely come back!

We googled around the area to find a soul place as we were taking my niece prom shopping. R-Kitchen came up and we decided to give it a try! Its a cozy and small on the inside. We sat at one of the smaller table with 3 of us, and it was perfect just for us! We ordered 2 oxtail lunch and 1 friend chicken lunch. Our sides were mac and cheese, mash potato's, & potato salad, nothing but carbs for our family LOL. The oxtail and gravy were a hit over the rice, super delicious. The mac and cheese was seasoned to our liking and it was not dry. The chicken was extra crispy and not dry at all. The mash potato was a bit bland for me & the potato salad was very pickley... But overall everything was amazing! To the AMAZING CAHSIER who took our order yesterday, thank you for being super friendly and recommending cakes and Kool-Aid. I must say, THE KOOL-AID WAS A SUPER HIT... We ended up getting 1 and left with 2 because it was that good. Reminded me of when we were little and that's what our parents to make in the fridge. Our cashier made the experience so much better by just being polite and very welcoming. I am so sorry we didn't get your name, but he was tall, skinny, had a hat on and worked the counter 4/13/2025 around 2pm ish! Thank you again!! We will be back!!

All I can say is WOW. WOW to it all. The staff were very nice and helpful with recommendations. The wait was reasonable for the food amount that we ordered. It is a MUST that you order a sweet. Because they warm it up for you. We tried the banana pudding-- very fresh--& the peach cobbler. We also ordered the gumbo and fried chicken with greens. The Mac and cheese --- you have to order. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, but the food was just average. The pork chop was crispy, but it was not otherwise memorable. The collard greens and the beans were nice, but nothing special. The corn bread tasted damp. I love soul food, but I was hoping for more. There were only three small tables inside, and the dining area seemed to be stuck in the pandemic era. I wish the owners the best.

Tucked away in a quiet little plaza in Lakewood (which probably has a few more hidden gems waiting to be discovered), my kids and I stumbled across this amazing soul food spot--and omg, we're so glad we did! We've been on the hunt for some really good soul food for a while now, and this place did not disappoint at all. I think it's more of a takeout kind of spot, but there are tables inside if you want to eat there like we did. We didn't want to wait to get home, and honestly, the smell coming from the kitchen made that decision easy! From the moment we walked in, the customer service was warm and friendly--it honestly felt like we were being welcomed into someone's kitchen. And then the food... chef's kiss. It was so deliciously incredible. We ordered the fried chicken dinner with mac and cheese, collard greens, and red beans and rice. My daughter and I shared the fried chicken--it was crispy, juicy, and seasoned just right. The collard greens were delicious and the Mac and cheese was good - a little on the salty side for me, but my kids loved it. My son ordered the pork chops and said it was one of the best soul food meals he's ever had. And he's serious about his food! He literally cleaned his plate and saved the red beans and rice to enjoy later (which he did- excitedly). We're already talking about what we want to try next time. Because yes, there will definitely be a next time. This place is the real deal. The ox tail and liver and onions is next for me!

Deeeeee-licious!! Came here Saturday had the fried chicken dinner with mac n cheese, collard greens, and mash potato's. Chicken was seasoned and cooked to a crispy perfection! Mash potatoes were yummy, greens were delicious, mac and cheese were good but not great. it came with corn bread, and it was tasty!!! The chicken was the star and I am so happy i love me some well fried chicken and this was just perfection, i wanted to go back yesterday but we cooked and today they're closed so I guess Ill have to run back this wekend. just delicious I appreciate it so much when my food is exaclty perfect!!!! The food here was everything was so good from the hot wings to the Mac and cheese mashed potatoes and fried chicken and don't skip the candied yams because they are so delicious. This spot is small but it has a lot of heart, the owner came out to greet us and asked how everything tasted great customer service super friendly. I'll definitely be back!!! read more

First time trying this place, I bought the pork chop dinner, and it came with tree pork chops. Very good and my sides were cabbage, Mac and cheese, and yams. Cornbread also was good, just right for my taste, not sweet. The only problem was a little too salty. I will go again and the gentleman that waited on me was very nice and patient. read more

Happened to be in the South Bay and decided to take advantage to indulge in some Southern Fried Chicken as I drove north heading home. After checking out my options, I settled on R Kitchen, Owner was very friendly and accommodating with his customers, a great touch to a dining experience. Ordered the Fried Chicken Dinner, that comes with 3 sides and corn bread (according to the menu, but I ended up getting white rice under my chicken to absorb some of the gravy), and for $1.50 more, I had the chicken smothered in gravy. Chicken was dusted in seasoned flour and deep fried. Chicken came out perfect as it the thin coating was crispy, and the meat inside was hot and juicy. However, there was one problem that plagued the chicken, the gravy, and one of my sides, the mac n' cheese - they were all overly salted. The worst offender was the mac n; cheese. As creamy as the cheesy sauce was, the decadence was hampered by what seemed to be like eating a dash of salt with every bite. As salty as the mac n' cheese was, the collard greens was the complete opposite. Boiled and served without any seasonings at all. Could have mixed the greens in with the mac n' cheese to cut the saltiness and make it more palatable. read more

We have tried almost every soul food/ creole spot in LA. This spot is FIRE! We ordered four different entrees... everything was gone...completely gone ...except for the bones....literally only the bones were left. Hubby's input: may be the best friend chicken ever besides his Moms. 10 out of 10!!! Would like to note that the chicken is not battered heavily - lightly battered to perfection! Sides were Greens, cabbage and mac n cheese. My plate- photo below... smothered Pork chops. Another 10 out of 10!!! Gravy was delicious, rice was cooked perfect. Pork chops were seasoned and fried to perfection. Sides were Greens, Yams, and green beans. All were delicious. Daughter ordered BBq Ribs and Chicken... sides were Mac n cheese, corn, yams. She finished everything. Asked for more... LOL. Kids had the BBQ ribs with fries, mac n cheese, and potato salad. They loved the ribs and the fries were bomb. I'm always hesitant to order fries but these were homemade fries seasoned perfect! Desert - homemade German chocolate cake and 5 layer pound cake. Food was great. We threw down in our car as there is very limited seating. I ordered the oxtails with Mac and cheese and cabbage. It was delicious! The oxtail was perfectly tender and it came with a bed of rice and gravy over the top. My husband got the spare ribs with double collard greens. The ribs were perfect tender as well. He prefers vinegary greens, which these weren't, but he still ate every last collard. I also had the lemon jello cake (poke cake). I had a few bites, but it was tart and a nice end to a heavy meal. read more

Earlier in the day I had gone to a friends bbq, but they ran out of sides, so I took my little sad plate of bbq chicken, ribs and brisket home, but I thought I still needed sides, so I yelped "best Mac n cheese" and R Chicken popped up, and YELP was not wrong, I ordered mashed potatoes with gravy, corn bread and Mac n cheese....my husband and I LOVED it all! Absolutely loved this place. You get that home feeling when you walk through the door. Its a small cozy place, but the food is full of flavor. First time here, had the ox tails, Mac & yams. Its really hard to describe "Soul Food" perfection, but R Kitchen is it! This meal was an experience not just food. The ox tails fell off the bone and had the perfect ratio of meat to fat, excellent. The Mac was creamy and the pasta stood up to all the cheese, great. Food is fresh and made on the spot which I like a lot but the quality didn't meet up to my expectations. The macaroni and cheese was too runny and tasted too strong of garlic which I thought was strange. Yams taste great just wish they had fully cooked it all the way through it was a bit crunchy. The chicken is seasoned and cooked okay but the quality of chicken is like churches kitchen. Overall they have great service but just won't be coming back due to food quality. read more

2nd time trying. I came last week for the Famous Peach Cobbler I had to try. They didn't have any that day. Bummer. I feel like if you have a business and you're "famous" for something ....that should ALWAYS be available. I tried again today and the guy got me 2 peaxh cobblers I was so happy to try them I even ordered food as well. The peach cobbler was okay. It was VERY watery. The seasoning was fine but I can't get past the soupy cobbler. The crust pieces were completely wet. The fried chicken was okay and the mac and mashed potatoes were good but definitely salty. I love seasoned food but I couldn't keep eating it. Overall The man in the front with the bald head was super nice and had great customer service. Yiks. I feel like I just ate an entire bottle of salt. I ordered the dinner fried chicken plate and every item was extremely oversalted. I got collard greens, green beans, and Mac n cheese. My husband ended up washing off the green beans and collard greens in a big bowl of water. Wish we could have rinsed the mac too... I would not recommend this place unless you have the craving for pure salt read more

Well I was told about this restaurant by my daughter. Who brags on it. So I decided to drive out here. From La. I got the beef meatloaf. Mac& cheese. Cabbage. It's cool. But while I'm eating I feel something kinda soft in my mouth. It was the meat loaf. It wasn't fine completely so I was eating raw ground beef so I'm disappointed. CLOSE THIS GARBAGE DOWN.Ok so I went in December and got meatloaf dinner plate , ok so I thought it was just a bad day the food was horrible, I gave it to my dogs. So today 3/28/21 I would try my luck because I have had good food from there a couple of years ago when the female was doing the cooking. I don't know who cooking this sh!+ but it was even more horrible today. How does oxtails taste like vinegar and all the sides taste like salt. Who can mess up turkey wings, RJ's. Gravy had no taste and it was just horrible. Not to mention they high as hell for a plate you make at home. Please stop serving the city of Long Beach and Lakewood this crap you calling soul food or either hire the lady who started y'all out back. read more

The restaurant was recommended by my beautician in the neighborhood. This will be my first and last time. I spent over $100. read more

My wife and I were looking for a place to get good fried chicken. We found R Kitchen Soul Food on Yelp. We placed a order on the phone. The gentleman on the phone was kind and helpful. We were quoted 25 minutes for 2 fried chicken dinners. We got mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, collard greens and candied yams for our sides. When we arrived they gave us our food quickly. The food was still hot when we got home. My wife and I both agreed, this was the best fried chicken and sides we had ever ate. Every single side was so flavorful and fresh. The chicken was crunchy and seasoned just right. Now I see why this spot has such good rating. They have good home cooked style food. This food is comfort food in times when we need comfort. First, I want to say they are not open Tuesday and no public restrooms so beware. I got the pork chops and Meatloaf and hot wings! The pork chops were ok but not quality cut pieces, the mac was good and the mash was also good. The meatloaf tasted good and the buffalo wings were just ok IMO. Oh, and the peach cobbler was very tasty. read more

I've been coming here for years and the quality of the food has been slowly declining. Today was another reminder that I will not be returning. We ordered two meals and both were not edible and nasty. 1st meal: Mac n cheese, oxtails, greens & yams. The oxtails tasted like they were cooked in water and very fatty, the greens were not seasoned at all, the Mac n cheese wasn't good either and had pockets of a watery substances. The cornbread was flavorless and burnt. Honestly, I am beyond disappointed and disgusted. My husband order the turkey chops and those were very thin and over cooked, the green beans tasted extremely salty and the yams were just okay. Overall we ended up throwing the food in the trash and wasted 65 dollars. read more

Omg when I tell you I'm soooo happy they started breakfast !! Their lunch/dinner is already good I was ready for the breakfast & they came through!! The fish was soft enough for her octogenarian teeth. She loves yams, period. The mac was good enough to go back for a pint! The ribs were tender. The fries were good. They lacked the flavor and soul I've come to expect from a place with such a long-standing reputation. Now for the good news: the mac and cheese is still that girl. No matter what's changed, their mac and cheese remains firmly planted in my top 5 comfort food dishes. Creamy, cheesy, and exactly what I remember. Maybe this was an off day, maybe my expectations were too tied to memories, but this visit left me wishing for the R&R I grew up loving.

Or better yet, they brought back July's 25th anniversary special, though the price for this year is a little higher than last year, but still not a bad deal. And just like last year, rewards members could get the pulled pork sandwich for half off once per day from Friday to Sunday of that weekend. I went on Saturday at about 11:30 AM, and there wasn't a long line to order, but Juan was the only employee ringing up customers at the register. It took several minutes since the customers in front needed plenty of time to place their orders. During my wait, I saw the menu had a section for Wood Fired Grill, where Pulled Pork was an option for a personal meal. Actually, they had two options for the pulled pork: a 6 oz serving for $15 and a 10 oz serving for $20. However, neither option would qualify for the half off as there is already an option for pulled pork sandwich under the Burgers, Sandwiches & Tenders section of the menu. Based on the price tag, I'm guessing that sandwich is equivalent to the 6 oz serving, but the personal meal would also include two breadsticks on top of a side. The sandwich that is half off would only come with one side. With the exception of Stonefire's Beans, all of their sides are vegetarian. Wait, beans aren't vegetarian? Not here! When I asked Juan to remind me what Stonefire's Beans were, he mentioned there was tri-tip inside, and I was immediately sold! It's also their most expensive side, at least for personal size, so unless you're vegetarian, I would highly recommend selecting Stonefire's Beans as your side. I also did ask Juan about the Cornbread Casserole since I didn't recall seeing that on a prior visit. He said that they honestly should have removed the word "casserole" as it's pretty much just cornbread, but with serrano and some other ingredient that I can't quite remember what it was. Could be worth trying in the near future, but I really wanted the Stonefire's Beans now that I know it contains tri-tip! I also asked for a water cup to finish off my meal. I sat at the table closest to the rear for easy access to the BBQ sauce dispenser as well as the water. Well, almost. When I tried to get water, the beverage dispenser starting rumbling as if to make me think it was going to explode any second! I ended up getting Vitaminwater in my cup instead. And I also made sure to get not one, but two cups of BBQ sauce for my sandwich and beans. There was an employee who was on break sitting directly across from me, but he should have been in the break area instead, which is just a little further to the back. On top of that, I had to hear him watch a soccer game on his phone during the 7-minute wait for my order. After dropping my order off in front of me, the employee asked if he could get anything else. I didn't see any utensils on the tray, so I asked if there were utensils. He spoke so fast, but was looking in the direction of the counter I was just at minutes ago getting BBQ sauce. Turns out the utensils were on the other side of that counter, and I should have gotten them first, though without a plate at the time, they really expected me to set the utensils directly on the table? Anyways, I did like the presentation of the Pulled Pork Sandwich as it seemed like a mountain of slow-cooked goodness waiting to be devoured! The Stonefire's Beans were a pretty good portion size too, like a $10 serving of soup at any other eatery. Knowing that the Pulled Pork Sandwich could use some BBQ sauce from the getgo, I poured the sauce in the sandwich, which immediately boosted the flavor profile by quite a wide margin! The cole slaw, unfortunately, was not an asset to the sandwich as it fell flat in taste and didn't supplement the pulled pork or the BBQ sauce very well. But the Stonefire's Beans? Oh yes, remember when I said I'd recommend choosing that as your side, assuming you are not vegetarian? Knowing that there was tri-tip in the beans really made the beans that much better than those from, say, a Tex-Mex spot. They could have used more flavor, so I added some more BBQ sauce to the beans. Mmmmmmm...BBQ Baked Beans with some tri-tip! Oh yes, I'm sure Homer Simpson's mouth would be salivating if he were reading this review lol. Unfortunately, the pickle slices were placed directly on the tray as opposed to the paper that was supposed to cover the tray. Why don't they just use a small cup for the pickle slices instead? Juan seemed like a pretty cool employee, even making sure that the half off reward was on my account and that it applied to my order before requesting payment. Overall, I'm still giving 3 stars for this experience, but there's some improvement I can see from my last visit; there's just not enough for me to give 4 as there were several shortcomings that I really needed to put out there in this review.
