Yummmm. That was delicious. I was again upset at Robert Earl's deplorable customer service, but was craving BBQ. I Yelped onto J Looney's. As many times as I'd passed this spot, I never realized they were there. The 5 stars from other Yelpers drew me. I ordered from an older gent, apparently the owner, who later waited on me. I got a dinner for my Mom, and one for myself. Catfish with yams and mac. Ribs with fries and mac. Side of peach cobbler. First, EVERYTHING WAS GOOD! The fish was soft enough for her octogenarian teeth. She loves yams, period. The mac was good enough to go back for a pint! The ribs were tender. The fries were good. I love restaurants that are open in the late afternoon. I often eat lunch late, and I hate waiting with the lunch rush. The gentleman working there was very nice, and he patiently went over the menu with me since it was my first time. I got the rib tips, ribs, and some sides. The BBQ sauce is smothered into the meats which I love, and the sauce is sweet and tangy. The ribs were very tender, and the portion size was generous. I wasn't a fan of the mac n cheese since it was a bit dried out, but the greens were so delicious! Next time, I'm getting double greens. I love the idea of a small mom and pop spot. Working in the community, my co workers and I love trying new spots. In comes J Looneys. Looking at the pictures got me very excited, and the prices being so reasonable how could we turn it down. So it is a small mom and pop spot so the combination of phone orders and Yelp order got the staff of two very confused. So that's on us. We had 7 people other separately. Now the food. I got the fried catfish with a side of fries and collard greens ($14). I think it was roughly $15.40 total with tax. I would say the meal was tasty but kind of basic. Nothing spectacular but it was only $14 so it was a large meal for a great price. Just the confusion lead the group with very little time to eat and some orders were incorrect. With that said. I'm not sure if this was the best example of soul food and am not sure if I would try it again. But it's worth a shot. read more

Oh my gosh! The gentleman who was in charge of my order was so adorable. His son, who is usually the one who collects all the GrubHub orders using the app, was gone for the day and the gentleman was so adorable trying to figure it out and finally asked me to help. He reminded me of my own dad and software apps. Anyways, onto the food! I ordered a FRIED FISH COMBO (Fried red snapper with two sides -- MAC N' CHEESE and POTATO SALAD -- and CORNBREAD). It also comes with a bag of different condiments and utensils. You can tell how long they have had this business because he even told me how long it takes for the FRIED RED SNAPPER to be ready. And when it came out, it was fried perfectly. I got out my tartar sauce and started digging in and ended up finishing all five pieces of it. The sides were also amazing. MAC N' CHEESE was well balanced with texture and cheese. The POTATO SALAD was also a perfect blend of mayonnaise, eggs, potatoes, and whatever else it takes to make it (I don't know because I don't cook). I loved the tanginess. Initially, I was really excited about this new restaurant as I grew up in the South and have strong New Orleans roots. I ordered the smothered pork chop dinner which comes with 2 pork chops, rice & gravy, and 2 sides. First of all, I only had 1 pork chop. I didn't realize I was shorted until I got home and looked at the menu again. The pork chop was tender and had good flavor. The collard greens were tasty, but my second side consisting of macaroni and cheese was fair. It was very dry. The cornbread muffins were very good, yet cold. The Cajun fries were less than desirable. They were frozen crinkle fries with seasoning salt. There was nothing Cajun about them and the portion was small. Customer service was ok. We had to wait for a while and there was only 1 other party in the restaurant. The chef did apologize. It appears he was working the front end of the restaurant and the kitchen. Overall, I didn't find this restaurant worthy to represent "New Orleans Culture Food". read more

The food was amazing! I wish I would have thought to have taken a picture. I had the beef ribs, mac & cheese, potato salad, watermelon, lemon cake and 2 cokes. This place is brand new and I am for sure coming back. The ribs had plenty of sauce and just fell of the bone. The sauce was a bit spicy but had great flavor. The mac & cheese was creamy and had just the right amount of cheese plus the noodles were cooked just right and were soft. The potato salad was light and had just the right amount of mayo and egg. This was going to be my first time trying this place out. Unfortunately the guy who answered the phone was extremely rude! I called to place an order for gumbo. Being I wasn't familiar with the menu, I wanted to know the price and the size. He told me the price then said "ma'am, I don't have time to sit and explain to you, you either want it or you don't!"....CLICK!! Like really? What kind of customer service is that?! Hung up in my face and everything because I asked two questions? They may be under staffed just like lots of other businesses are experiencing but even if you're super busy and backed up on orders, didn't call for his bad-mannered unprofessionalism. I heard of this place through a friend so I wanted to stop by and check it out. Little family place, cool little home-ish vibe. I ordered the catfish Po boy and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the fish and the breading fried onto it. The fried breading didn't just slide off or peel off, it was stuck to the catfish pretty well, which was still nice and moist. BBQ is bomb, tasted sweet and tangy very flavorful my wife it tasted like brown sugar to her. So def on the sweet side. So happy to see a new Cajun Restaurant pop up in Long Beach! This place just opened up maybe a week ago. So this is what to expect: It's a welcoming space with a pop of color on the walls. The fun logo on the wall will just make you smile. There are two menus. There's a breakfast and a Lunch/Dinner. You go up to the window to order and you will be helped with some amazing recommendations if you don't know what you want yet. I ordered for my family. 2 catfish plates and 2 Brisket plates . We got MAC & cheese , greens , fried and cole slaw for sides. It also came with cornbread and watermelon. I loved the addition. Of the watermelon. I tried both the catfish and brisket. I got the catfish fried. It was very tasty and seasoned just right. The portions also were a nice size. The MAC was really good and I ate every last bit. The greens were good as well with bacon and turkey bits mixed in. The brisket had a nice taste and the bbq Sauce was a really nice pairing . Overall your are getting some really good food. Ok where do I start.. I have been here twice already since it has opened the first day was on July 4th where I had BBQ ribs, chicken and a sausage link. For my sides I had potato salad (which I don't like everyones) and greens. It also came with a slice of watermelon which was surprisingly very sweet. Everything I ate was amazing! Lemon cake is really good! Not too sweet, but just right.! 2nd time I ate here during the soft opening I ordered a bunch of food! Fried catfish plate with mac and cheese and greens Braised short ribs (very tender) with yams and red beans. Gumbo (only served on the weekends) with rice and hot buffalo wings with fries... Phew! Ok you can never go wrong with the catfish it is seasoned to perfection, the yams I looove it tastes like butter and brown sugar lol gumbo had a good taste and I ate it pretty quickly (hence no pictures) the wings were good.
