This place does not disappoint! I have been here before but recently had a reminder of how I needed to go back. They have an amazing selection of food and unlike many other restaurants that offer you two sides, they offer 3! It's a great deal of food but worth every penny. I've had this restaurant on my "must visit" list all year. I read a bunch of the reviews and was really anticipating trying their food. Pretty much wanted to sip the kool aid. Tried calling in an order today at 6:33 PM to pick up on my way back home from a meeting. Three tries, no answer. They close at 7:00 PM (posted business hours). No problem--I drove to the restaurant to place my order. I walked in nearly 10 minutes before closing and was greeted with "do you have a phone order?" When I said that I've been trying to call in my order for almost 30 minutes, that's when I was told "we stop taking orders at 6:30 PM." I would love the food if they dialed it back on the salt. I typically prefer salty savory but this was a bit much. The gravy was meh and was suprisingly the least salty thing after the cornbread. Great soil food and people with a great attitude. I got the meatloaf with red beans & rice and a Diet Coke. They were out of Diet Coke so she went to the liquor store and bought me a tall can and brought it to my table! Great cornbread. We asked for butter and she brought out a cup of melted butter, which was awesome. My son and cousin got fried chicken and greens and said it was great as well. I'm going to combine two reviews months in between for this post. East coast fam made a swing through to the west so we stopped by R kitch and made a decent size order for five. This was Feb of 2022. I know for sure I ordered the smothered turkey wing Mac and cheese and collards. My wings gave me what I required of them juicy seasoned and rich sauce. My greens where better than just ok but weren't what I would call awesome, no bites of turkey of onions and peppers, straight greens and some juicy with a splash of vinegar. The Mac and cheese I wouldn't refer to as my mommas Mac, you mine the type with a layer of sharp caramelized cheddar on top. It was decent and paired well with our meal I'd give it a strong 7 outa 10. We returned here for another run at in in dec 2022. What I love about a restaurant is when it can be consistent same every time you walk in. Ordered the Mac and the greens as my sides but had the same texture and taste as my Feb visit. This time as a main I ordered the fired turkey chop, now people as someone who attended culinary school I'm here googling what the hell is a turkey chop after I'm busting down on R kitchens version, like I know this ain't no pork three people feeding me. Upset but still eating it like I know this ain't no pork. Lucky. I read up and it wasn't pork but it was bomb how. They fried it. Seasoned it and served it up. Love everything at R Kitchen and I have tried most of it. My favorites off the main menu are the braised short ribs and the oxtails. If you come on Fridays you can get the best gumbo in SoCal. A rich dark roux is packed with shrimp, crab, chicken and real andouille sausage. The folks that run it are real deal down to earth people and make you feel like you're eating at their home. The Mac & Cheese here is fire- legit the best mac and cheese I've ever had. Mac and cheese was my favorite food as a kid, and some weeks it was all I would eat after having thrown terrible tantrums to avoid eating rice and vegetables. I know- the horror. Haha. Anyways, after all these years I still love mac and cheese as much as I did when I was a kid. And while I've never grown tired of the dish, I do have higher standards for good mac & cheese than I did at age eight. So after scrolling through countless Yelp pages looking for that perfect southern style heavy duty mac, I finally landed on R Kitchen and headed on over. The rest, as they say, was history. I ordered 3 large sides of mac and cheese ($6.50 each) to hold me over for days, and I'm so glad I did because the mac here is seriously some of the best I've ever had. I've been meaning to try out this restaurant for quite some time. Finally came here today. Place is not that big with few seats for dine-in customers. Looked clean. Fortunately it was not busy that time. There was only one customer there. Service was fast. Took me less than 10 mins to order and receive my to-go order. Ordered oxtail dinner with sides of macaroni cheese, collard greens, candied yam and cornbread. There's rice underneath the oxtail. Oxtail was really tender, not fatty at all. The oxtail was delicious but the sauce was a little bland. However, it was perfect with the collard greens which was a bit salty but so flavorful. They're perfect together. Macaroni cheese was just okay. Cornbread was a little bit dry and crumbly. The yam was delicious but a little bit oily for my taste. My man and I tried this today since it's so close to our place and OMG it was bomb! It's hard to find good soul food, we got fried chicken, bbq ribs, a hot link, mashed potatoes, Mac n cheese, red beans and rice, candied yams, potato salad and it comes with corn bread everything was very flavorful and the corn bread was super moist and delicious! Whole lot of nostalgia for me. I grew up in the neighborhood, walking those blocks, taking the school bus, riding my bike with my sister... So location a plus for me. I ordered the smothered pork chops (after reading the reviews I had to check it out. I don't usually eat pork chops. But when I do they better be just like grandmas) lunch combo with yams and greens. I also ordered the fried chicken lunch combo with greens and mac & cheese. Your combo's come with cornbread (soft / almost cake like. Really good) . And for two I spent about $33. I waited a little bit for my food. I didn't mind much I kind of just poked around in my memories while I waited. When I got it I couldn't tell if I was smelling the pork chops or the fried chicken but I knew something was about to get bodied as soon as I got in the car. It was the chicken. Fresh out the grease, I couldn't let it cool. It was tender and juicy with flavor in the coating and on the chicken. I'd like to think I fry a mean piece of chicken.. But I think they got me here! Plus they are open for takeout! Location - In a small plaza located next to a Fish Market and other local businesses on the intersection of Paramount and Candlewood. Ambiance - It's a small establishment with a few bar stools and dining tables. What I liked about this place is that it's a family owned restaurant and not a chain. It's just a whole different vibe. The minute you walk in, you immediately feel all this enthusiasm and love from the staff (even during these stressful times). They even gave us a menu to take home. Prices - Everything is reasonably priced. Food - There are so many entree and side options to choose from! Lunch entrees come with 2 sides and dinner entrees come with 3 sides, both with complimentary corn bread. Let me start by saying that the portions here are huge!! For the price you pay, you certainly are getting a bang for your buck. We even had leftovers the next day. We came near closing time, so I was pretty sad when they told us they ran out of collared greens. So come early just for that! We ended up ordering the Beef Short Ribs and Turkey Meat Loaf for dinner. Overall - Everything had very good flavor, but it was a little too overly salted for me. You definitely need to balance it out by getting a drink or a side that was more sweet. I had to switch back and forth between the meat and candied yams and cornbread. Would I come back? YES. Came from San Diego to try them out. The service was friendly, the plates came with three sides. I love liver and onions I was slightly disappointed they were the only thing under seasoned. In addition my sides were black eye peas (smacked), cabbage, yams,cornbread and washed it down with fruit punch/ grape Kool Aid. The amount of food received felt like I wasn't making a dent. My honey got chicken chops (he said next time he'll add 3 more), mac, greens, yams, cornbread as wells as the Kool Aid. He devoured his meal in a matter of 10 minutes. I didn't particularly care for the cabbage but the Mac and cheese and sweet potatoes were really good. The fried chicken may have been fried too long; but everything was really good. Soul food in Long Beach is few and far. But R Kitchen really blew me away! Food: Amazing! We got fried chicken, short ribs, mac and cheese, and collard greens. The chicken was fried really nice and seasoned well. The Mac and cheese is just.... And the cornbread was soft, buttery, and just the right kind of sweet. The Mac and cheese was a bit too salty though. The portions were large. We both got the lunch sizes and thought it was a lot of food. I could only imagine the diner plates are really filling Service: you can tell the employees really care. We came on a Sunday afternoon and it was busy. Fried Pork Chops are pretty good. They are thin chops that can be quickly fried, not thick cuts. Top piece was still moist but bottom one was a little drier. Oh well, it still tasted ok especially with the gravy. Mac 'n Cheese is tasty as well as collard greens but red beans and rice was bland, I didn't care for it. I had the turkey chop lunch with red beans and rice and corn as sides. You also get cornbread with the lunch. It was all good. Cornbread was just the way I like it. My husband and I had been craving some soul food for a while, and we couldn't find one closer to where we live. I googled "soul food" in Lakewood, and R Kitchen popped up. My husband, his sister, and I went to have dinner, and while the total price knocked me off my feet, the food was pretty decent. I ordered the spare ribs with collard greens and mac n cheese, but it's true what other reviewers have written, the food is a bit on the salty side, hence, the four stars. My hubby had the beef meatloaf with steamed rice, gravy, mac n cheese, and mashed potatoes, and my sister-in-law had the ox tail with rice and gravy, mashed potatoes, and mac n cheese. The meals came with cornbread, and I wonder why some people are not giving it its due recognition. I found nothing wrong with the cornbread, and I loved that it was so warm; I wouldn't have minded a little bit of butter. The young man who took our order was very polite and sweet; he gave me that warm fuzzy feeling. I was also going to order the drinks, but he gave us three drinks for free; how nice is that? We ate there, and all three took half of our food home because the portions were huge. My daughter had a feast eating the leftovers, and she said it was scrumptious.
