BBQ Pork Spare Ribs (lunch plate) and fried chicken (dinner plate)

This review is well overdue !!!! I have been coming here off and on for years and the quality has always stayed consistent . this is my favorite Soulfood spot in all of LA and inland empire that I have ever tried. This is the closest plate I can get that reminds me of my southern families cooking. I love the service and it always smells so good when im waiting for my food. The staff does not beat around the bush and they are straight to the point to get you the perfect plate until you come back!! bonus points because I never have to ask for hot sauce for my chicken unlike other places! they know whats up.

WOW, I absolutely loved the oxtails. The meat was so tender and juicy. And the greens were perfectly seasoned. Everything was amazing. And the food was ready quick. Warm friendly staff, clean inviting space. Would definitely come back!

Cheesy Mac N Cheese and Goodness gracious Blessed Greens!! Okay the ribs are cooked just right cradled like a baby in a bed of gravy over rice, cheesy mac n cheese, with some leafy seasoned greens. We googled around the area to find a soul place as we were taking my niece prom shopping. R-Kitchen came up and we decided to give it a try! Its a cozy and small on the inside. We sat at one of the smaller table with 3 of us, and it was perfect just for us! We ordered 2 oxtail lunch and 1 friend chicken lunch. Our sides were mac and cheese, mash potato's, & potato salad, nothing but carbs for our family LOL. The oxtail and gravy were a hit over the rice, super delicious. The mac and cheese was seasoned to our liking and it was not dry. The chicken was extra crispy and not dry at all. The mash potato was a bit bland for me & the potato salad was very pickley... But overall everything was amazing! To the AMAZING CAHSIER who took our order yesterday, thank you for being super friendly and recommending cakes and Kool-Aid. I must say, THE KOOL-AID WAS A SUPER HIT... We ended up getting 1 and left with 2 because it was that good. Reminded me of when we were little and that's what our parents to make in the fridge. Our cashier made the experience so much better by just being polite and very welcoming. I am so sorry we didn't get your name, but he was tall, skinny, had a hat on and worked the counter 4/13/2025 around 2pm ish! Thank you again!! We will be back!!

All I can say is WOW. WOW to it all. The staff were very nice and helpful with recommendations. The wait was reasonable for the food amount that we ordered. It is a MUST that you order a sweet. Because they warm it up for you. We tried the banana pudding-- very fresh--& the peach cobbler. We also ordered the gumbo and fried chicken with greens. The Mac and cheese --- you have to order. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, but the food was just average. The pork chop was crispy, but it was not otherwise memorable. The collard greens and the beans were nice, but nothing special. The corn bread tasted damp. I love soul food, but I was hoping for more. There were only three small tables inside, and the dining area seemed to be stuck in the pandemic era. I wish the owners the best.

Tucked away in a quiet little plaza in Lakewood (which probably has a few more hidden gems waiting to be discovered), my kids and I stumbled across this amazing soul food spot--and omg, we're so glad we did! We've been on the hunt for some really good soul food for a while now, and this place did not disappoint at all. I think it's more of a takeout kind of spot, but there are tables inside if you want to eat there like we did. We didn't want to wait to get home, and honestly, the smell coming from the kitchen made that decision easy! From the moment we walked in, the customer service was warm and friendly--it honestly felt like we were being welcomed into someone's kitchen. And then the food... chef's kiss. It was so deliciously incredible. We ordered the fried chicken dinner with mac and cheese, collard greens, and red beans and rice. My daughter and I shared the fried chicken--it was crispy, juicy, and seasoned just right. The collard greens were delicious and the Mac and cheese was good - a little on the salty side for me, but my kids loved it. My son ordered the pork chops and said it was one of the best soul food meals he's ever had. And he's serious about his food! He literally cleaned his plate and saved the red beans and rice to enjoy later (which he did- excitedly). We're already talking about what we want to try next time. Because yes, there will definitely be a next time. This place is the real deal. The ox tail and liver and onions is next for me!

Deeeeee-licious!! Came here Saturday had the fried chicken dinner with mac n cheese, collard greens, and mash potato's. Chicken was seasoned and cooked to a crispy perfection! Mash potatoes were yummy, greens were delicious, mac and cheese were good but not great. it came with corn bread, and it was tasty!!! The chicken was the star and I am so happy i love me some well fried chicken and this was just perfection, i wanted to go back yesterday but we cooked and today they're closed so I guess Ill have to run back this wekend. just delicious I appreciate it so much when my food is exaclty perfect!!!! GOOD SOUL FOOD!! I was in the area and looked on Yelp for a lunch recommendation and R Kitchen came up and after reading reviews and looking at pictures, I went. I was not disappointed!! I got the pork chop lunch special with collard greens and cabbage and a piece of sweet potato pie - under $20. Sweet potato pie was . Flaky crust and lots of flavor. Tore it up while I was waiting for my food. The greens and cabbage tasted like my mom's. Delicious. Cooked perfectly. Cabbage had a little crunch to it and both well seasoned. The pork chop.. yum yum yum. Fried. Crispy flavorful fat and cooked moist and crunchy it was so good I ate it all in my car. It's hard to find good soul food. I'll be back for sure!!

My friends and I visited R Kitchen and the soul food is very good. I had the "turkey ribs" which are excellent and now my favorite food from this restaurant. The turkey spaghetti, and the beef stroganoff are also very good, well seasoned. The owner and staff are good people. The prices are reasonable. Highly recommended. read more

I love this place don't get me wrong. But I guess the great taste of food is determined by who ever is working that day it. When the owners are there I get the best tasting well seasoned fried chicken and cabbage but today I ordered the lunch special and it was bland. Cabbage wasn't savored with the garlic taste I'm use to. To conclude neither was the chicken seasoned and it was over cooked. So now I'll just have to order in instead of a phone order as well as when the owners are there read more

This shit was fire. I'm a southern girl and got a hankering for some good ole southern/soul food. After yelping places nearby I chose R's based on reviews and photos of food. I had the turkey spaghetti and it was exactly what I hoped..you know the kind with the baked cheese on top. Good lord it was good. My husband the beef short ribs and didn't shut up about it all night long! I'm probably going check out the chicken next time and the peach cobbler. Can't wait! read more

SO GOOD! Literally, I just ate the turkey meatloaf with mac & cheese and mashed potatoes and cornbread & I'm so stuffed, but I've never been happier! Treat yourself people and try this place. Great community based restaurant. Ordered ox tails, greens, and red beans and rice. Meat was cooked well and fell off the bone. My mom ordered a juicy turkey chop with greens and mac and cheese. The owner was a very nice man and welcoming. We will be coming back here. It's a small little hole in the wall, so make sure you see the sign! read more

Went here with my girlfriend and kids on Mother's Day and the food was delicious. Their Mac and cheese is amazing greens are delicious black eyed peas mash cabbage and fried chicken all perfection. Not sure if this place is new but we will definitely be coming back. It's been hard to find good soul food in this area and this place really hits the spot. I recommend take out cause it's a little cozy in there but if you dine in the service is great too. read more

Just had the two piece chicken lunch and I give this place my stamp of approval 5 stars!! The chicken is nicely fried and the Mac and cheese was pretty good. The only thing was there was probably a tab bit too much salt in the Mac and cheese. I ordered the chicken lunch, for 8.50. It came with a fried chicken breast and a wing(my choice). It also came with two sides and corn bread and candy yams. The candy yams were pretty good. This was like a mini thanksgiving...I like this soul food place. I come all the way from chino to eat here. Usually stop by 2 times a weeks when I have class. It's so good I've tried almost everything and I'm always left full and satisfied. So far I've tried the ox tails, fried chicken, baked chicken, turkey meat loaf, and turkey burger. There sides are really good as well. I always get the yams, mac, and greens. The pound cake is delicious too. Everything is really good and so flavorful! They also have a huge catering menu, the owner makes things happen! read more

This gem was a little hard to find (temporary sign had blown up on the roof top today). I am glad I called to find out if the business was still around. It is located next to the Fish Market. I ordered the Turkey chops with Mac n cheese, green beans, and rice & gravy. The portion size was large (I got full after eating about half my dinner). Everything was seasoned so well! I am big on food textures and was pleasantly surprised that the green beans were not super mushy! Yay! The mac n cheese was creamy and seasoned well (I know I mentioned seasoning before, but it's worth mentioning again). I also ordered the peach cobbler...and even though I was super full from my meal , I had to try it. I definitely enjoyed it! I could really taste the cinnamon and spices. My portion had the perfect balance of filling and crust. Overall I am so glad to have found a great Soul Food restaurant in the area- the food was delicious and the service was friendly and quick! read more

Hidden Gem! We have been looking for good soul food in and around Long Beach. Most places are too greasy... too expensive... old grease...poor customer service, etc.. this place is none of the above! We came here because of YELP reviews and we did not regret it. We got fried chicken, Mac n Cheese, collard greens, and Blk eyed peas... Ooooo Lawd... lip smackin' good! They also have a desert called five flavor cake that will make you want to wake up the dead! The customer service is superior! They let us try things before we ordered. This is the best soul food that I have had in a very long time if ever... The closest to my mother and grandmothers food!! The food was bomb and the service was even better!! Freshly made food was delicious some of the best soul food I've ever had to the mac and cheese, off the hook collard greens and crispy delicious Fried Chicken on top was the best service and to die for candy yams! We were in the area and found this place on yelp. It was a Saturday but they were open contrary to the info on yelp. My husband and I both had fried chicken lunches. The chicken was well seasoned and very good. I had candied yams and greens. Good but not great. My husband had string beans and black eyed peas. He really liked the black eyes peas with okra in it. String beans were also very good. Cooked just right and tasty. My favorite part though was dessert. Had the peach cobbler and it was perfection. Flavors were perfect and LOVED the buttery flaky crust. Had to wait a good while for our food but they gave us an xtra peach cobbler for our troubles. Will be back. read more

I believe this was the best soul food I've tried thus far. The chicken was fried perfectly with just enough seasoning along with the yams, mashed potatoes and Mac n cheese. The corn bread was moist and the customer service was astonishing. I live about an hour away, but was in the area and actually drove away from a different establishment because I was persuaded by the greater reviews here at R Kitchen. The prices were also reasonable as well, I will definitely be making my way over here again! read more

Love this restaurant!! Home cooking, fresh ingredients... You can see the chef getting down in the kitchen! and they serve up a lot of food. I suggest coming early, cause they will sell out of some items near closing time. Great service.... Can't say enough good things about it read more

My god this is food! You get used to eating fast food and shitty pizza so much you forget what real food tastes like. I have reviewed mexican grub for good ratings because it was authentic and another because it was restrauntie. Both were excellent meals. But this, this food is home. I'm not southern and I dont like greens but this is amazing. I was lapping up t he greens liquor and sopping up every last bit of gravy and flavor with my corn bread. You get 4 huge pieces for 13 bucks plus sides. Lets see KFC do that. Cant stop singing this place praise. Delicious, plentiful, and modest prices make this place my go to chicken spot. I bet their other stuff is great too. read more

Inevitably, these pretentious bougies seem to be bitter with the world in general, posting overwhelmingly negative reviews. As many times as I'd passed this spot, I never realized they were there. The 5 stars from other Yelpers drew me. I ordered from an older gent, apparently the owner, who later waited on me. I got a dinner for my Mom, and one for myself. Catfish with yams and mac. Ribs with fries and mac. Side of peach cobbler. First, EVERYTHING WAS GOOD! The fish was soft enough for her octogenarian teeth. She loves yams, period. The mac was good enough to go back for a pint! The ribs were tender. The fries were good. Unfortunately, I can't remember the peach cobbler. Did Ma eat it beforre I got some? I dunno. But this place will definitely be on repeat.

R&R has been a Carson staple for as long as I can remember, so writing this one hurts a little…read more I called in my order and picked it up on the way home and ordered my usual short ribs plate. Unfortunately, the short ribs were disappointing. They were way fattier than I remember them being back in the day, to the point where I spent more time trimming meat than actually eating it. The quality just doesn't seem to be what it used to be. The greens were... okay. If it wasn't for the garlic Crystal hot sauce doing some heavy lifting, they would've been pretty hard to get through. They lacked the flavor and soul I've come to expect from a place with such a long-standing reputation. Now for the good news: the mac and cheese is still that girl. No matter what's changed, their mac and cheese remains firmly planted in my top 5 comfort food dishes. Creamy, cheesy, and exactly what I remember. Maybe this was an off day, maybe my expectations were too tied to memories, but this visit left me wishing for the R&R I grew up loving.

The staff were friendly and very polite. I ordered the turkey chop dinner with cabbage/green combo, Mac and cheese and cornbread muffin. The turkey chop was very delicious and flavorful. The cabbage/greens combo was delicious but the Mac and cheese was lacking a little flavor. The muffin was soft, sweet and flavorful. The meal was reasonably priced. The restaurant ambiance is customer friendly and the meat is made to order. The menu has some great items on the menu. This is a great place to go for a delicious and filling meal.

Or better yet, they brought back July's 25th anniversary special, though the price for this year is a little higher than last year, but still not a bad deal. And just like last year, rewards members could get the pulled pork sandwich for half off once per day from Friday to Sunday of that weekend. I went on Saturday at about 11:30 AM, and there wasn't a long line to order, but Juan was the only employee ringing up customers at the register. It took several minutes since the customers in front needed plenty of time to place their orders. During my wait, I saw the menu had a section for Wood Fired Grill, where Pulled Pork was an option for a personal meal. Actually, they had two options for the pulled pork: a 6 oz serving for $15 and a 10 oz serving for $20. However, neither option would qualify for the half off as there is already an option for pulled pork sandwich under the Burgers, Sandwiches & Tenders section of the menu. Based on the price tag, I'm guessing that sandwich is equivalent to the 6 oz serving, but the personal meal would also include two breadsticks on top of a side. The sandwich that is half off would only come with one side. With the exception of Stonefire's Beans, all of their sides are vegetarian. Wait, beans aren't vegetarian? Not here! When I asked Juan to remind me what Stonefire's Beans were, he mentioned there was tri-tip inside, and I was immediately sold! It's also their most expensive side, at least for personal size, so unless you're vegetarian, I would highly recommend selecting Stonefire's Beans as your side. I also did ask Juan about the Cornbread Casserole since I didn't recall seeing that on a prior visit. He said that they honestly should have removed the word "casserole" as it's pretty much just cornbread, but with serrano and some other ingredient that I can't quite remember what it was. Could be worth trying in the near future, but I really wanted the Stonefire's Beans now that I know it contains tri-tip! I also asked for a water cup to finish off my meal. I sat at the table closest to the rear for easy access to the BBQ sauce dispenser as well as the water. Well, almost. When I tried to get water, the beverage dispenser starting rumbling as if to make me think it was going to explode any second! I ended up getting Vitaminwater in my cup instead. And I also made sure to get not one, but two cups of BBQ sauce for my sandwich and beans. There was an employee who was on break sitting directly across from me, but he should have been in the break area instead, which is just a little further to the back. On top of that, I had to hear him watch a soccer game on his phone during the 7-minute wait for my order. After dropping my order off in front of me, the employee asked if he could get anything else. I didn't see any utensils on the tray, so I asked if there were utensils. He spoke so fast, but was looking in the direction of the counter I was just at minutes ago getting BBQ sauce. Turns out the utensils were on the other side of that counter, and I should have gotten them first, though without a plate at the time, they really expected me to set the utensils directly on the table? Anyways, I did like the presentation of the Pulled Pork Sandwich as it seemed like a mountain of slow-cooked goodness waiting to be devoured! The Stonefire's Beans were a pretty good portion size too, like a $10 serving of soup at any other eatery. Knowing that the Pulled Pork Sandwich could use some BBQ sauce from the getgo, I poured the sauce in the sandwich, which immediately boosted the flavor profile by quite a wide margin! The cole slaw, unfortunately, was not an asset to the sandwich as it fell flat in taste and didn't supplement the pulled pork or the BBQ sauce very well. But the Stonefire's Beans? Oh yes, remember when I said I'd recommend choosing that as your side, assuming you are not vegetarian? Knowing that there was tri-tip in the beans really made the beans that much better than those from, say, a Tex-Mex spot. They could have used more flavor, so I added some more BBQ sauce to the beans. Mmmmmmm...BBQ Baked Beans with some tri-tip! Oh yes, I'm sure Homer Simpson's mouth would be salivating if he were reading this review lol. Unfortunately, the pickle slices were placed directly on the tray as opposed to the paper that was supposed to cover the tray. Why don't they just use a small cup for the pickle slices instead? Juan seemed like a pretty cool employee, even making sure that the half off reward was on my account and that it applied to my order before requesting payment. Overall, I'm still giving 3 stars for this experience, but there's some improvement I can see from my last visit; there's just not enough for me to give 4 as there were several shortcomings that I really needed to put out there in this review.
