Although the prices gone up over the years, this place is still a good deal for lunch when one is in the mood to eat "unhealthy" as their most popular items, and what they are known for, are deep fried. Order at the outside window for this place as the inside counter is for another (but related) business serving Filipino food. But, back to Rada's, the only menu items here are their famous piroshkis (chicken or beef), fried calamari, lumpia and pancit noodles. I haven't tried the last two items but what they are known for are the first two. Yippee skippy I am a happy camper! First, many mahalos to Wayne S for tipping this place yesterday! I never would have tried it otherwise. Guess that is what Yelp is all about. As far as ambiance....NADA. It is literally a window in the window of an adjoining Filipino restaurant. You can buy your Piroshki at the window and eat it at one of the tables in the restaurant which are jammed into a very small piece of real estate. Kinda shabby and not in the chic way. Beyond that, grab your soda or water and pull up a chair. My mom and nana were from Russia so I grew up eating some very wonderful dishes, piroshki being one of them. My family loves piroshki and I spend many an afternoon slaving to make them. When Wayne yelped that he stopped here it was game on and convinced honey bunny to track this place down for me. Never been to Ft Street Mall before so after figuring out where to park...recommend Century Square by the Cathedral on Bishop, and walked into the little mall from there, actually right behind the Cathedral. We tried both the beef/cheese/mushroom and the beef cabbage. Not a fan of the beef cabbage but the beef/cheese/mushroom was spot on. Will be back next week and buy a dozen for the family dinner. I have wanted to try these ever since I walked through Fort Street mall. It is definitely not your European version, but it is good. I was able to try the beef, mushroom, and cheese and the chicken and cheese. I really like the outside pastry portion. It is flaky yet chewy and slightly doughy....a tough combo to duplicate. The flavor of the inside is good and I must say, a pretty good deal for 2 bucks....they are good size! The restaurant itself is not the cleanest, but that doesn't bother me. Been coming here since my mom was a student at HPU--some 25+ years ago--and though they've downsized &moved across the mall, I'm still a fan. Granted, Rada's entire selection consists of only 5 items (3 types of piroscki, fried squid, & tossed salad), but there's no denying that they are SOOO GOOD (yes, that good!) at what they do. ;D And they do it at a price-point that actually competes with a certain Mc-fast food place next door!! For about $2, you can get a solid--super heavy--6" x 3" piroscki, packed with savory ground beef, cheese & mushrooms (or chicken/cheese/mushroom, or beef/cheese/cabbage, your choice)...and that should be enough to satiate your mid-afternoon snack-monster, or even works for a small lunch. I love that their piroscki are always consistent...very tasty, but never salty, never too much breading, & never too greasy (of course, it'll be a little greasy...it is deep-fried, after all). Can't ask for much more than that! If you're looking for a full-on meal--or just in the mood for something a little different--$1.85 will get you a little paper baggy of fried squid, which is deliciously battered, super light & crispy, & somehow always super tender and snackable!! ;) They also have lunch specials--various combos of those 5 items--which include salad, for $4.75. Keep in mind, all of these things are deep fried (aside from the tossed salad, which I've never tried), so I'm guessing that they're best eaten fresh. Venture around the Fort Street haunts and finally try out that Rada's Piroscki place I've been hearing about. They are freaking on the money! Another thing I found interesting was that I've already tried the pirosckis product in the past but have always wondered whey they came from. Now I know. Though many say that this isn't the "real deal/authentic" piroscki, for the novelty of taste and presentation, it's actually not that bad. Like an oversized corn dog (the deep fried breading part), filled with your choice of ground beef/cheese/mushrooms or ground beef/cheese/cabbage or with chicken, cheese and mushrooms (all at $1.75 - $1.95 each). Despite what you may already be thinking, trust me when I say that it taste's far from being a pizza. There is an interesting vinegar bite to the filling on the inside. And the piroscki it self is pretty big in size, like medium sized bomber burrito. Since I went with the Lunch Special A (tossed salad, fried squid and 1 piroscki of your choice, $4.75) I had a variety of food to eat from. Salad was salad with a nice sweet vinaigrette but the fried squid I thought was a bit too fishy for my taste. Back in early 1981, having just graduated from college, I got my first job in the downtown business district. I worked for a savings and loan institution that remarkably is still around, though now it is a bank. For lunch, there were dozens and dozens of places to eat, but i ended up further up Fort St Mall to get my meal. I came across Rada's Piroscki (which was on the left side of the mall just past Pauahi St) which caught my attention as I didn't know what a piroscki was. Well, I ate it and loved it ! This would become one of my favorite places to eat lunch while at work. During that time, there used to be a filipino woman with glasses that worked the front which I heard came to the the next owner when 'Rada' retired. Too bad I didn't like eating calamari, as according to my coworkers and people standing in line, they LOVED eating the fried calamari...like a cult thing..they had to have it! I left working downtown in 1987 and hated leaving the many places to eat on Fort Street Mall and its adjoining side streets. Once in a while, or on a weekend I would visit this place, but it because so rare that I think in the last 20 years, I've bought the piroscki maybe less than 10x... Today, due to work I had to come down to the mall and guess what, found out the place has remained though moved across the mall, but NOT by much. Yummy...located presently where I remember McD used to be in the 80s, joint with Vicky's Filipino Fast Foods. Saw that the price was just $2.00 even for all three types (priced at $1.92 plus tax), and took a double and triple check on the window mounted menu while standing outside in line...wow, it has not been raised very much! They still kept to the same 3 different combinations. Chose the #2 (beef, cheese and cabbage), and whoa...how delicious was it...it was like meeting an old friend, or riding the bicycle after 20 years....so delicious..and the size of it did not appear to change at all (if any). I thought that in 35 years (holy cow) since I first ate there, the price would be closer to $3.00 or more, but it has stood the test of time and not really changed in price. It was kinda oily and very filling. It's definitely random that they sell Pirosckis here in this Filipino restaurant. This is a childhood memory for me! My grandma would occasionally help out at this little shop and she would always bring home piroshki. My favorite was the chicken and cheese piroshki. A piroshki is a fried dough with meat filling inside. The filling is normally a combination of either chicken and cheese or beef cheese. It's obviously oily when you get it because it's fried and I would normally pat the oil off with a paper towel before I eat it. The little shop is now joined with a Filipino restaurant but you order it right outside at the window. Back in the day they had a very small shop across from its current location in Fort Street Mall. It is primarily Filipino workers that have been making these piroshki within the last fifteen years. I don't personally know how a true Russian piroshki tastes like since this is the only piroshki I've ever had. I'm an idiot. I've been wanting to try this place ever since I went to HPU (over 15 years ago). Today I finally went and it was totally NOT what I was expecting. I realized after I opened my bag back at the office that all this time I had been thinking this place had pierogis (the potato-y dumpling one). Again, idiot. The pirozhki (sp?) reminded me of a savory malasada, and smelled just like it in the bag! I wanted to try the beef and cabbage, but they had just run out so I tried the chicken, cheese, and mushroom. The filling was okay, but the outside was just way too greasy and it made me feel kind of gross after eating it. The location inside the Filipino fast food place was pretty dingy and did not appear very clean. The service was fairly fast and friendly though, and the price was reasonable ($2). My mother has gone here for years, and used to always call me, asking, "You want a bag of fried squid, too?" I would usually reply with, "No." But sometimes I have a taste for those oily, deep-fried little squids. I used to pull off their legs one at a time when I was a kid. I have even used it to gross out people. The smell definitely has a fishy Filipino aroma which makes it a mix of delicious and overpowering. (Whenever she would warm them up in the microwave, it would smell of squid for a day. Bake them or just eat them all at once!) They have moved since I was a kid, maybe two or three years ago. With me, they aren't too energetic or friendly, but amazingly, they still recognize my mother--obviously she frequented there a lot--and they are cheery, loud, and full of laughter. Both of their places have had that oily, dirty, mom & pop feel to them. I love this place. We've been coming here for years, and the food has always been consistent as far as taste goes. They have awesome pirosckis, if you're wanting to try European type of food. The pirosckis are filling, so one is always enough for me. You have a choice of beef or chicken. My favorite is the chicken. This place has a take out window right next to vickey's Filipino restaurant. Sometimes they run out of their food and have to cook more, so they allow you to wait inside of vickeys. Located at fort street mall. This is a good place to come to if you want something quick and tasty. Also pretty affordable. I even like their squid. Oh, now sit down boys and girls and let me tell you a little story. It's about a little boy and his dad who would travel once in a while for business to Honolulu. One day the dad took the boy driving around various parts of the city. The boy cried out "Dad, stop! What is that?" The car tires screeched to a grinding halt at this little roach coach with the word "Pirosckis" or "Perogis" (can't remember) plastered aside it. The boy's eyes grew wide with the HUGE selection of meat-filled baked and fried dumplings as big as his side. The dad would say "Now son, this is what they call a Russian hamburger." - Who knew? The thought of these intriguing burgers grew to fester inside, and the boy ordered a curry-flavored hamburger-filled fried pie. He sank his virgin teeth into something he would never forget and would always remember as one of the best Russian burgers he ever knew. The dad is now gone and the boy grew, but he would still travel to Honolulu. Each time he would look for that roach coach... and each time failure grew. The island brodas and sistas hadn't a clue, and would look at 'chu saying "you in Hawai'i now, not da Roossian modher-land foo!" The grown boy's head would sink knowing he would never knew... But thanks to Al Gore and his invention, the grown boy googled his way to what is now Rada's Piroscki - how cool! So the last time I was in Honolulu, I B-lined it to Rada's knowing the history which relied on the boyhood vision of hopes and dreams. The coach was no more, but the roaches remained - oh how it was not clean! I laughed out loud to see that Rada's shared the same kitchen with a neighboring Filipino restaurant, and was now run by old Filipino ladies who stuck their heads out a side hole saying "hey whachu wan?" The location was in some strip mall far from the remembered link. It took me minutes to answer - to catch my breath - to watch those images and dreams slowly sink. Alas no curry-flavored Piroscki, all that stood was but a plain beef-filled over-fried burnt brick. So all those years of savoring this incredible destined-filled moment all came down to one single bite - chewing slowly, I wanted to quit - "Ooohh what god-awful sh*t!" This place is cheap and delicious. I used to come here everyday after school (McKinley High) for their "Chicken Cheese Mushroom" piroskis and fried calamari, each for $1.50. Yummy! I've been enjoying this place since it was located down the street where Blazin' Steaks now is- way back when old man 'Rada' (if that's what his real name was) made the pirosckis by hand. They still continue to make it the same way...and its cheap. These deep fried balls come filled with either chicken and cheese or beef and cheese. For less than three dollars each, it's a bargain. The fried squid is just a more 'street vendor' version of calamari- quickly fried, always fresh, and only $1! Calamari for $1? Who can beat that? I don't care that it only costs about a dollar; these things are DISGUSTING! And they are NOT pierosckis, either. They are also supposed to be called pierogis, not pierosckis. As a onetime resident of Poland, I happen to know what I'm talking about, and I've eaten the real deal many a time. Pierogies are large dumplings filled with sweet (most often berries) or savory fillings, such as potato and cheese, meat, or cabbage and mushrooms. Whatever they serve here is filled with the lowest quality, fattiest, most gristly ground beef you can imagine and American cheese, then deep fried in smelly old oil. GROSS! This place is manned by two older Filipino ladies, who also serve oily, tasteless pancit and lumpia. One of them gave me the wrong change at the cash register, then argued with me about it instead of reexamining her mathematic capabilities as she should have done. This went on for some time (I am not one to back down) even though the guy standing in line behind me backed me up by redoing the subtraction for her. I wish I had read Peter's review before trying this place out. I do NOT recommend Rada's unless you are down to your last dollar, don't mind getting heartburn from all that grease, and like tasteless, unrecognizable food served by annoying people. read more

I've grown up eating Rada's because Rada used to drop off a huge box of her pirogi every Saturday at KGMB (where I worked - in TV), for AKU, but he never worked on weekends and she knew it so we all got to pig out every Saturday in the '70s when she still had a stall at Ala Moana Center and he'd still give her place a plug. The quality is the same as far as I remember and how can you go wrong with the absolutely insanely low price? The pirogi is exactly the same as Rada used to mke it and brings back those happy, greasy, tasty drools just the same as when Rada was around, If you haven't you really should try the chicken cheese mushroom or the beef cheese mushroom, or a couple of each of them. They're cheap enough and you'll be hooked once you try 'em. You also can't beat the pricing at 2 dollars each AFTER tax. read more

Now that I'm older and go to school right up the street from here, I still find myself coming back here. I don't care if it's oily or greasy. Their bread cylinders filled with beef & cheese is less than 3 bucks! AND it fills you up! My mother says that ever since the guy died, his wife and his family has been operating it. They used to be where that Hawaiian plate place is now but moved in with Vicky's. Not much of an upgrade, still kind of a dirty facility but it's more of a "take out" place anyway. I haven't had any complaints about the food, service, or getting the wrong change back out of the 15 years I've been coming here. I love this place! I used to come here all the time with my mom and dad as a kid. Their location used to be across the church, but they've joined with another restaurant over three years ago. My favorite has always been the chicken, cheese, and mushroom plate lunch. I still remember dipping my squid into the salad dressing sauce which is I think white vinegar and garlic salt combined. Or, mom just orders a la carte and brings home about $20 worth of food. The prices were and still reasonable. I was down town a great deal and couldn't believe how bad the smell was from this place was. Well, one day I decide to be brave and order a couple. Haven't had one in 29 years and when I came home for a visit this past November and decided to check if they were still open I was glad to see that they were and that nothing had changed since I was a kid. Crust was too hard, oil tasted burnt. Tried it for the first time on 22 Oct 2016....didn't really enjoy it. The filling was fine and they don't skimp on the meat but what turned me off was the crust. It was hard, not crispy, maybe overcooked and had sort of a burnt taste to it as if the fryer oil hadn't been changed in a while. Definitely filling and one single piroshki is enough for a meal. If someone offered a Rada's piroshky to me, I'd eat it for sure but I don't think I'll be returning here on my own. The other thing that peeved me was that they ran out of the beef and cabbage. Reading the other reviews, it seems that B&C often run out making me wonder why they don't bother making more of those (and less of the less popular varieties). read more

My Monster and I don't do Valentine's Day traditionally on the 14th anymore so I decided to surprise him with these babies (they are his absolute favorite noms) and some of his other favorite foods for a non traditional Valentine's Day present (not on the actual day). He has been having these for decades and still has a special place in his heart for them. The dough is a flaky crunchy dough that is soft on the inside(like a heavy, savory malasada) and loaded with filling. His favorite? beef, mushroom, and cheese piroski. Well I've been having Rada's since I was a little kid but I hadn't had one in years when I learned that they closed. OH NOOOO but fortunately for me they are open again as an attachment to Vicky's. The pirosckis are just as I remember them, greasy, meaty/cheesy goodness. In fact their chicken version tastes better than before and is a good option if you think their "meat" version is made of cat lol. Now keep in mind that you really should eat these when they are hot...as mentioned by even the fans of these things they are greasy...so when they get cold it's not a pretty thing. Also since this place is in Fort Street Mall and kind of a pain for me to get to I usually order a bunch and freeze them. To reheat I just let it defrost in the fridge then micro until warm (bout 2 min) then pop it in the toaster oven to make the bread crispy again. Be careful though as it will drip oil while in the oven! As for the complaints that i read in other reviews: The oil is old. -- It hasn't been the 2 times I have been there in the past year. The "meat" is bad or not even meat- Yes, it's not the best quality beef. In fact it's probably some of the cheapest stuff they can get but I would wager large sums of cash that it's way better than the "beef" Taco Bell serves. To reviewer that mentioned all the negative reviews and you still went down and bought some? Then you cut one open and decided to read how someone said they didn't use meat but maybe cat so you threw it away? Good thinking there cause it's not cat they use SOYLENT GREEN! OMG! The only other Piroscki I've had was in SF from a local deli in the avenues. Loved the Piroscki there! Just the right combination of a light dough and tasty beef filling. I work in downtown and passed Rada's countless times. Today I gave it a go and was not disappointed. Rada's dough is slightly heavier but not overwhelming. I liked that it was crunchy on the outside with a good amount of filling. I ordered the beef and it was tasty and VERY filling. Planning to return soon! read more
