Stopped by Rakes for dinner. My wife ordered the seafood platter -- walleye. I went with the bone-in ribeye. It took a full hour for our meals to arrive. The place was crowded when we arrived, but after half an hour it was less than half full. The bartender was very inattentive and she seemed distracted. When I asked for the beer menu, she brought it back and tried to give it to someone three seats down. When I ordered my second beer she filled my glass and set it behind the register and started talking to her friend. I had to wave my hands to get her attention so she'd bring it to me. She was very friendly but her mind definitely wasn't on the job. On top of this, she took our silverware after we finished our salad and didn't bring us a clean set after our meals arrived. For the price point, I definitely won't be returning to Rakes. It's a nice place but it's way overpriced for a sports bar. read more

Visited 27 JUL 24 We were in town visiting my spouse's family. Her brother suggested this place for us to go have lunch. We wanted something local, not a fast food chain. It was a good suggestion. We had a decent meal, good service for a fair price ($35 two entrees/iced tea). My wife had a Reuben sandwich, I got the black & bleu burger, we both had fries. She liked her sandwich, she liked the texture and leanness of the pastrami, which is high praise, she has a meat fats thing. My burger was very good, fresh tasting, cooked like I wanted, the bleu cheese was good. The fries were pretty standard actually but good enough. The presentation is clean and simple. This is a good restaurant, any little quirks they have I suspect they will iron out and improve over time, I understand they are relatively new to the location. They have gone for historic pictures and classic sports memorabilia. If we were local we would likely come from time to time. End of traditional review. Okay, now a few of my own thoughts that apply to me, but I feel important to share for fellow "green book" travelers. The clientle at the day and time we were here was older, and quite monochrome. I was the only customer of color. There was a little diversity on the staff. There was a bit of a country club vibe (I have been in real country clubs) that this place, in this location cannot rightly claim. I was never quite relaxed. Our server, Emoney, young lady of color, seemed a bit nervous and performative, as if she had been sent to entertain the out of towner mixed couple. It was okay, she did very well, we tipped her well. I do however think they do not get a diverse customer base. There is also a separate smaller bar area that is attempting a sports bar vibe, that and the memorabilia on the walls gives the whole restuarant a casual eatery/sports bar esthetic- but the menu and clientle says, wear a jacket and be quiet. The atmosphere and the menu and the patrons don't quite match up. It is a discordance that bothered my (a me problem) sense of organizational coherence. read more

I haven't lived in Zanesville for about 10 years but I've heard of Rake's Place and finally got around to trying it while I was in town over the holidays. It's a cozy spot with a dining room on one side, complete with a fireplace and a u-shaped bar on the other side with a ton of TVs. My dad and I decided to sit in the bar area so we could watch some football while we ate. Our waitress was nice and after we gave the menu a look, she was quick to take our order. We decided to share the artichoke dip and I landed on the fish and chips with a side of brussel sprouts instead of coleslaw. It took a minute for our food to come out but when it did, I was pleasantly surprised. The artichoke dip looked and tasted homemade and I really liked the crunchy pita chips it was served with. The fish was breaded nicely and was crispy but the brussel sprouts were the star of the entire show. They were fire. I'll quickly add that there is plenty of parking, the bathroom was clean, and the menu was huge. I would totally come back to try more. While it wasn't super busy when I was there because it was a little later in the evening, I hear that they get really busy and don't take reservations so be mindful of that on your visit. Food was great as always!¡! First time our service was bad since we have been dining here. Waitress didn't bring all our food had to ask her for others . Asked for our dinner rolls and she never bought them plus no refills on our drinks. She stood at another table and talked to customers for awhile and we had to ask another Waitress to get her attention and she had to go tell her we needed our bill and she stood there for another few minutes before she brought the bill . Found Rakes using yelp and wanted to see if it lived up to the 4 star rating. Looking for something healthy, ordered the house salad with Seared AHI tuna w/teriyaki glaze and wasabi. Waitress was friendly and very quick. It was as warm, they have great outdoor seating. The house salad was huge with very fresh ingredients. Homemade rolls served with butter and cinnamon were hot and soft. Things started out so good then a bump in the road. After waiting 15 mins for tuna to show up the manger comes out and said the tuna was frozen and they couldn't thaw fast enough. She the offered to cook up some scallops and shrimp for me. Stopped in on our tour of Zanesville and I'm glad we did! Nice looking building off the road, nice inside, neat baseball theme decor. Plenty of seating if you want away from the bar, and a very nice bar area. I ordered the fish and chips, the fish was nice nugget size with a great seasoned batter that was not overly doughy, but rather light and crisp. We happened to be passing through town and found Rake's. They had a tent set outside to add additional seating. A two-person acoustic band was playing outside and our server half-apologetically said the only had one table and it was in front of the band. We sat at the table right in front of the stage and didn't mind it one bit. The music was GREAT! We started with fried clams and the Knelly Nachos. Our server accidentally brought us friend oysters but NBD, we enjoyed them...and found a pearl in one of them! The nachos were good, I loved the addition of fresh jalapeños and the cilantro lime sour cream was a super yummy addition. Our crew ordered the shrimp tacos, a salad, the steak sandwich, and a kids Mac and cheese. The portions for everything were insanely generous. Nobody left the table hungry AT ALL. The steak sandwich came with a side of perfectly-seasoned, crispy fries and we opted for coleslaw alongside the tacos. It was crunchy, fresh, and perfectly dressed. You get two tacos with your order and they're pretty big, definitely enough! The mac and cheese was creamy and flavorful, like the kind grandma would make. The side of broccoli was steamed and dressed with garlic and seasoning. We had a few miscommunications about our order (oysters instead of clams, forgot the coleslaw, shrimp tacos were supposed to be seared but we got deep fried, etc) but it was kind of hard to hear over the music. Otherwise our server was extremely attentive and one step ahead of us the whole time (i.e. bringing drinks before we needed them) Bottom line: my ten year old son asked if we could come back, which is rare and also completely insane since we live nowhere near this place. Fish and chips were ordered, props for serving walleye instead of garbage tilapia but for $20 I expected more than 5 or 6 small chunks of fish! Why not serve the whole fillets...obviously to screw the customer. Very disappointed in my portion. The fish was just ok too, not great Fries were bland, nothing to mention beyond that. We took a trip to zanesville for dinner Saturday night, started at another place but due to short staffing and extremely long wait we bailed and had to chose a back up plan. After reviewing yelp, we decided on Rake's place. Rake's place is a small to medium size restaurant. It is a open concept so it is a little on the loud side. We got lucky and were seated immediately, service was a bit on the slow side. Our waitress was hustling. but kitchen was slow Took over an hour to receive our food, my wife got the Parmesan crusted chicken served with two sides. She chose asparagus and a baked potato. I didn't see anything that tickled my fancy, so I went with my old stand by, a Burger!! They do cooked to temperature which I like, and I got mine med rare. It is served with side I chose fries. The burger was well seasoned and juicy, So I enjoyed it. The fries were barely warm but didn't send them back since food already took so long. My wife enjoyed her food. Went to Rake's Place yesterday with a couple of coworkers and I was thoroughly impressed with the entire experience. It is a really cool place from the main dining area, to the wrap around bar room, to the outdoor seating with garage doors. All the decor is really cool as well. The whole place was really clean and just looked really sharp. The food was fantastic. Everything came out quick and was absolutely delicious. Beyond that the people were just awesome. Staff was very freindly and attentive. We met with Michelle at the end and she was awesome! It's easy to tell the culture in here is incredibly strong and everyone is very proud of the guest experience they deliver. Will be back even though it's far away! read more

So glad you're back open! Can't wait to order the garlic wings again! Last visit my son & I ordered them (my first time) and wow! Perfect with a cold draft. When the server brought them to the table one of the friendly fellas from the table next to us leaned over with eyes staring and asked what those wings were and said he really wished he could start his meal all over again but with that order added! haha yep! I'm awful at remembering to take pics but believe me, as beautiful as they looked they were equally delicious!! I live in the Columbus area with a plethora of good restaurants. However one thing my area is lacking is a down home casual seafood restaurant. I found this place on Yelp while driving thru Zanesville. And I will admit I wish we lived closer. I was craving fried oysters, that's what drew us there, they did not disappoint. Another indication to me of a good seafood restaurant is the sauce. The cocktail sauce and tarter are made in house. Both very good. House was packed and had a good down home vibe to it with a large bar that ran down one side. Server was very friendly and did a good job considering how busy they were. I've included comments on each dish with the photo. We also got a wedge salad and fries but didn't include pics. Highly recommend the Seafood platter, (salmon was cooked perfectly and the fried scallops were a good size, shrimp scampi was soo good), the fried oysters and the blood orange beer! We stopped here after a day at The Wilds. We were hoping for some great food based on the reviews. Unfortunately, it wasn't the case. The only redeeming quality here is the outdoor seating. The drinks are "watered down" (margarita tasted like there was zero tequila in them) and the fish in the fish and chips is likely frozen, pre-breaded walleye. (tough and fishy......definitely not good walleye and definitely not done in house) My girlfriend had a burger and it was a preformed patty, not done by hand. Our first place eating on site since the pandemic started and we will thrilled with our choice. We got the fried spinach and artichoke nugget appetizer and it was BOMB. The sirloin and red snapper were perfect. I don't normally like fish, but I tried my husband's and thought I would be willing to eat it. My husband loves fish and loved it. The only downfall I will say is the margarita, while delicious, had VERY little alcohol. I know you expect that in margaritas but man, this one was disappointing on that front.
