I had been thinking of LASIK for years but only recently decided to follow through. I had searched…read morethe local Raleigh area and found Porter Ophthalmology had the best and highest reviews. The lower star ratings I read seemed to be related to insurance related issues so I ruled those out. I initially tried to make an appointment online but never heard anything so I called a few days later. The receptionist was friendly and immediately sent me forms via email to complete prior to my consultation. My wife and I went to the consultation and met Dr Porter and his wonderful staff. After completing all the required tests and asking Dr Porter more questions than I probably should...we scheduled the pre-op appointment and my surgery. The pre-op lasted about 2 hours, which included dilation of my eyes. I drove home afterwards with little issue. Surgery day (yesterday). We showed up just prior to my 0910 appointment and we were sent to a small room just outside the inpatient surgery room (or whatever you want to call it). Friendly staff came in and spoke with us and put some numbing drops in my eyes. Shortly thereafter I was in the room and having the surgery. I will note now that I am 54 and wore progressive lenses so we went with monovision for my surgery. Meaning that my left eye is for reading and my right (dominant) eye is for distance. Seems weird, right? After the surgery, which lasted less than 10 minutes, we received some final instructions and we were on our way home. My vision was cloudy but I could make out pretty much everything. I rested for a few hours in a mostly dark room, putting drops in every hour as directed. After 4-5 hours the cloudiness was almost gone and I could see TV and read fairly well. My eyes were slightly itchy but the eye drops seemed to alleviate the issue. Later on in the evening my left eye began to ache slightly so I took Motrin and went to sleep. Woke up today and vision was even better than the day before. We went to my 0900 appointment and again met with Dr Porter. After a series of checks he stated my eyes were between 20/25 and 20/20, which I haven't had in about 11 years. I was worried about the blended vision but my brain is quickly adapting. Dr Porter said that my vision will continue to improve over the next 4-6 weeks. My only regret is that I waited so long to have this surgery.

Update: Was driving home the day i initially went for my exam. They told me they would need to put…read moresome drops in my eyes and that it wouldn't bother me to drive at all. On my way home, my eyes were stinging so badly and I could barely keep them open. I had to drive home about 30 minutes from this place well not even knowing if I could make it. This is a scenario where someone could cause a major wreck, kill someone else, or themselves. It was very irresponsible and musleading of them to convince me that it was fine to drive home. I Had scheduled follow up visit for a possible surgery. They to reschedule due to the dr not going to be in the office that day anymore. So, we rescheduled. The day off the new rescheduled appointment, which was in the morning, I then got a phone call saying that they would need to cancel and reschedule again! This time they said it was due to scheduling me with the wrong doctor. I decided at this point in time that there were too many strikes, discrepancies, and I really can't trust an office that is incompetent of keeping things straight. Especially if they are going to be doing a laser surgery on my eye. I got that maybe this was administrative, but let's say they don't put in the right information to the doctor or whatever and something goes wrong. There's just too many signals of red flags and not being able to keep things straight within this office. I would be terrified to go in there at this point. I completely canceled due to the negligence of them being able to keep things in order. I am not going to be the guinea pig to "see" how things go... by the "looks" of it all, it'd go completely wrong!! Was referred to Dr P to have my eyes checked. She confirmed something that I had to going on and was very well explanatory about it. She gave multiple options and suggestions for my issue. All of the staff was very professional and friendly. The often has a nice quiet, and clean, greenery feel. They are very hospitiable and even effered me water at the temperature Ib would like. They offer other Wellness Services besides eye exams and checking for retina issues. I scheduled my next appointment already.

They have a nice website, I'll grant them that. But when it comes to being responsive, they have some catching up to do. If you need eye treatment, look elsewhere. With luck you won't have to wait until the new century to get a reply.

I've had a bit of a mixed bag with this office, but have been relieved that it hasn't been nearly…read moreas bad as the reviews suggest. They use very outdated systems for record-keeping and communication, although I was told they're updating some of this. You have to fill out a scantron for current symptoms at every check-in (no electronic check-in options). The waiting room is very small and seems to be constantly crowded. The staff at the desk aren't the friendliest, but they're professional and competent. I have had issues with the communication between the clinic and the lab, and turn-around for test results can be extremely slow. This is made worse by the outdated record-keeping and communcation systems. Unlike MyChart, test results are only posted after the provider has reviewed them. I'm being treated for PCOS (now PMOS). It's been a bit frustrating how much this office focuses on weight gain/loss. It's a symptom associated with my condition, but it shouldn't be the primary focus. If PMOS had been explained in terms of a metabolic disorder rather than simply an issue of stubborn weight gain, I would have been more keen on beginning treatment. Because I have a history of disordered eating and body dysmorphia, focusing predominately on weight can be triggering. This office would do well to update their approach to discussing weight issues. I'd also like to see providers at this clinic do a better job of caring for gender non-conforming/expansive patients. Not everyone who has PMOS is a woman! (As a side note, GLP-1 meds are almost exclusively advertised as weight loss drugs, but I'm only just learning that they have way more benefits for PMOS than just helping you to lose weight!) All of that said, I REALLY like PA Ameya Patel. My physician, Dr. Sheshadri, is pretty good but it was difficult to schedule with her and she can be slow to communicate test results etc. When I managed to get seen by her, our appointments always felt rushed and, again, very focused on weight gain rather than other symptoms. I did, however, appreciate that she seems to understand that calorie counting can be triggering for folks with a history of disordered eating. PA Patel, by contrast, always takes the time to really listen to my concerns and thoroughly explain my condition and options for treatment. I've been impressed that she remembers details from conversations we had months prior and her sensitivity to my particular needs and concerns. PA Patel was also very informed about the recent research on how to properly diagnose and treat PMOS and was prepared to explain some of the ways that insurance coverage can affect our options for treatment. Thank you, PA Patel!
