Ramen Kazama is by far the best place to get ramen in the twin cities. After coming back from Asia i had been craving some authentic Japanese food, which, as we all know, is almost impossible to find in Minnesota. My friend, who had been working there at the time introduced me to Kazama-san and he was a very nice guy! From the moment i saw the pictures on the menu i knew it was by far the most authentic place i had found yet. Judging by taste alone, this is by far the best ramen I've had since moving back home. Ramen Kazama was a very pleasant experience! I ordered the number 1 with an extra side of noodles. The broth is very rich and flavorful--definitely the highlight of this meal. The pork was flavorful and very fatty. Egg was cooked perfect. My friend who went with me felt that the number 1 was lacking in salt and was "good, but a bit bland." I would say number 1 would be good for people who like very simple ramens. It is on the pricey side for the amount of food you get, but every bite was pretty satisfying. I wanted to get the spicy pork miso for the spice, but was more curious about the pork/chicken broth with the number 1. The customer service was good. Food arrived in a timely manner. Note: you order your food and then sit down to eat. It's a ramen place--don't expect the same service as at a steakhouse. Giving 4 stars simply because it didn't blow my socks off. Unctuous, savory, wonderful broth, perfectly cooked noodles, back note of mushrooms. I had the Tonkotsu, classic pork meal, could of used a couple more pieces of pork, two was all I got. The doll had the veggie curry ramen. We also had the fried chicken app. Mine was pretty much the best bowl meal I've had, better than Pho. She liked hers, but was too spicy half way through, me, I'm not a fan of curry and I stay away from it. The fried chicken app? Moist, crunchy, some (supposed to be), spicy mayo. Just came across as a good chicken finger pieces, the mayo did not add anything. Recommended location from a friend. It's very unique coming here. First off you order at the front, grab a "number" to bring to a table of your choosing. That is unique and actually refreshing in it's own way. The food itself? Very yummy. We came here on a cold evening and the warmth of the broth of ramen always warms the tummy. These are no exceptions and would highly recommend it if you like Ramen. We did also get some gyoza which was served to us piping hot. Very good too. One of my favorite restaurants off of Nicollet. They hit everything right with their small menu from price to taste. Me and my girlfriend's favorite dish is the Veggie Curry Don sub Chashu, but the Tofu is also amazing. The Gomadare Gyu is also really tasty, along with the Karrage. Both two really good appetizers. Went there for my birthday and a couple days later. The food was very very good and we were able to be seated pretty quickly. I had the tonkotsu ramen the first time. Super rich and delicious, even though the portion is not huge, it is extremely filling. The second time I went solo and sat at the bar, I had the soyu ramen, with an extra egg. Also quite delicious. When you arrive you place your order at the counter and they will give you a letter. You then tell the hostess, how many people are in your party and she will seat you. Once you are seated the ramen arrives pretty quickly. I am definitely going to continue to go there frequently, as I believe that uni-deli has fallen off quite a bit. read more

So, I like ramen. I might say I LOVE it, but honestly I don't get to eat it often enough to deserve the right to say that. So, I guess I just LIKE like it, like a middle school romance. I usually try to order the Tonkatsu wherever I go, as my 'baseline' ramen experience. I thought it was pretty good here, though when I think "I want ramen" Unideli is still the bowl that pops in to my mind. That certainly doesn't mean Ramen Kazama is bad, just...not my first crush, I guess. I DO like the order/sit style of eating, as I don't love having to tip all the time (sorry service industry!) and especially on something as 'simple' as a bowl of ramen. The place was pretty empty when I went though, so if there were a line out the door it might have been different. I excepted more out of the decor though. The place felt....weird? It wasn't finished nice, save for a couple unique tables and lamps, and was kinda dingy and bunged up? Then there were other 'garage sale' style lamps and knick knacks. Meh. Good Korean food. Had the Fried tofu Ramen curry (Veggie Curry), pretty delicious and my friend ordered the Karimosu which was good as well. Place is in uptown a bit on the expensive side. Street parking sometimes crowded. Tried the Karamiso today, thanks to some wonderful reviews from my friend. Spicy treat is all I can say. I was sweating by the end of it. Totally worth it. I had the tonkotsu ramen, which has an extremely flavorful and amazing broth, but might be slightly more salty than my liking. I love the soft boiled egg and the meats that are in the dish. My biggest complaint is that the noodles are thin as opposed to the thick and chewy ones that I am accustomed to, but that is completely based on personal preference. I have been here twice. The first time was extremely busy and it was a Saturday night at peak dinner time. so we waited about an hour. The second time was also a Saturday, but it was right when it opened at 5pm and we did not have to wait at all to be seated. So unless if you come in at the moment it opens, be prepared to wait!! This is my first official Ramen experience so my rating might have been different if I had something to compare it to. I went with the Torishio. Ramen with Chicken. It was not spicy at all. Not a lot of flavor but was perfect for me being I was feeling a bit run down and chicken based broth fit the bill for comfort food. The chicken pieces in it had great flavor but were really chewy & bit rubber like. I was expecting something more like Udon or Soba noodles. The noodles looked just like spaghetti noodles. Not sure if that's the norm or not. I did ask if there was MSG, and yes was the answer. I usually tend to skip it if that's the case but was determined to try the food being it was a recommended/favorite place of a friends. So, I'm continuing to question my 3 stars mainly because I really want to give Ramen Kazama a higher rating. I'm very willing to try them out again and re-review but for now here is what I've got. I drive by Ramen Kazama every day on my way to work and have been wanting to try it since it opened. A coworker of mine told me how fabulous it is and all of my dinner partners really loved their orders as well. I am going to chalk my mediocre experience up to what I ordered. I ordered the Number 1. Shoyu which is pork, chicken broth, green onions and an egg. I have only had a restaurant ramen bowl one time in my life which was during a trip to Denver last year. I seriously dream about that ramen bowl all the time. It was so perfect in every way, so I had some high expectations that just weren't fulfilled. I felt like it was kind of plain tasting and most of the flavor came from the green onions. I did try one of my dinner partners's pork bone marrow ramen bowls which was a lot better than my pick. Another partner had ordered the spicy bowl which she loved as well. The space was great. It's pretty small, and you order at the counter and they bring you your dish. It's very clean and nice inside. The food is pretty inexpensive, and I believe my dish was only around 9.00. Everyone was super friendly. I think when we left 5 employees told us to have a good night on our walk out which is fabulous. Also another note is that they do not do takeout so you must eat inside. Sad soft, gummy noodles. ***The egg yolk was absolutely horrifying, like jelly grain sand? How do you wreck a beautiful jelly yolk into a jelly-sand monster? Super strange. Gyoza: Lame. Not much flavor, the sauce was below average. Karaage: WOW LOVE I floored by how moist their chicken is! Great flavor, Crunchy, Lemon on the side, and slight spicy Japanese mayo that will make you sing. It's better than Zenbox's, which I always find a bit dry. I was hoping to give this review a 5 or 4 star at least, but unfortunately my dining experience wasn't up to par. I waited for about 20-25 minutes for my bowl of ramen while my friend and other customers who arrived after me got theirs right away. I understand that maybe they had forgotten but it is still unfortunate especially when you notice the waiters are staring at you while watching your friend eat his bowl and you're impatiently waiting for yours. I had to go up and ask someone about it and the lady was like "Oh! No wonder there was a confusion. We'll get your order right away." Ummm, really?! What was there to be confused about....? I just don't understand. By then, I really wanted to just leave the restaurant already.... My #3 Karamiso ramen came out on in 5 minutes. Then a few minutes later, the waiter (who could also seemed like he could've been the owner) came by gave me a free side bowl of ready-made steamed ramen noodles. Although I appreciate the kind & apologetic gesture, I really didn't need more noodles. Free appetizer would've been nice. Although my dining experience wasn't the best, the ramen I had ordered was very delicious & flavorful. I've been to Ramen Kazama a couple of times now. Every time I always get the Karamiso Ramen. I enjoy the spicyness it has to offer and I haven't been to a place that does Karamiso Ramen. The reason for my 4 star rating is that every single time I've brought people here with me and they order the tonkatsu, it has been hit and miss. Either it has been too salty or too bland. Everything else has great flavors, it's only when I have people order the tonkatsu Ramen. I haven't been there in a few months, so things could have changed. Atmosphere: Certainly have a hipster vibe here. The restaurant is a bit dim except for the bar area. The staff are friendly and they seem pretty happy to work here. Lots of chit chatting, noodles slurping and music playing. Food Appetizers: Fried Calamari $5.75 - Fried squid serve with Japanese mayo. Could be a bit more crispy. Gomadare Gyu $5.75 - Lightly seared beef tenderloin. It's pretty tasty but I didn't like the sauce much. If it was substitute for a spicy oil pepper sauce it would be better. Still pretty good. Ramen: I've been to a few ramen joints and I can easily say this was the best ramen I've had so far. Best in the Twin Cities for sure. Tonkotsu $12.50 - Pork bone marrow broth is thick which allows it to stick to the noodles very well. The egg is cooked perfectly and so is the two slices of pork that comes with the bowl of noodles. I only wish the two slices of pork was bigger. The homemade noodles are made pretty well. Karamiso $12.50 - The spicy miso is a meat based broth so it's thick and spicy. They have bits of meat sprinkled on top so after you mix it you'll get a bit of meat with every slurp of noodles. Additional Thoughts - Easily 5 Stars but the appetizers just didn't impressed me. A few years ago while visiting Hawaii I had Ramen for the first time and it was absolutely amazing. Since then, I've been to about 5 restaurants in Minneapolis that has Ramen hoping to find something close to what I had in Hawaii. Ramen Kazama is by far the closest and was delicious. I got the Shoyu Ramen. The broth is what made it awesome for me. Everything else was great as well but the broth was the best part. Unlike any other ramen joint I've been to: order at the counter, food gets brought to your table, and outside seating available. Edamame is a measly portion (15-20 pods) served overcooked and too hot. How do you mess this up? Torishio is the BEST chicken broth that I've ever had, outdoes well-known places in NYC. Noodles are perfectly chewy, egg was just a tad overdone, 3 pieces of fried chicken that comes with were too greasy for my taste. Bamboo shoot would be a nice touch but I didn't know you had to add them in. Hubby got the summer ramen which he enjoyed but I'd rather not the sesame dressing broth? The service was also prompt and our food was brought out extremely quickly! The atmosphere was relaxed and slightly rustic and it was extremely welcoming! Ramen Kamikaze..... that's what they should call it... (is there a plane crash emoji)? I wanted to love this place. A Ramen restaurant in Minneapolis is needed. This one, seemingly carved out of an old coffee shop with dingy interior, open kitchen, and poor lighting is what we have. Oh the Middle West, we shall catch up. As Shaq once elevated out of the film depths as a Genie in Kazaam (please watch for context) to something other than crappy acting, We shall elevate our high sodium pallet's to a better Ramen experience and away from Kazama. Till then, a collective and drawn out sigh... . Food: It's Ramen people, takes a lot of effort to make it bad. The food was 4 stars- it was not bad food. The whole experience, however, is part of the dining experience (see below). The sake came in a glass not the usual karafe w/ "sippy cup!" My fiance perfers her sake as I do. in a sippy cup not an ikea glass... One of the problems with being in a Hipster area of the city is hipsters"iness" and Ramen are a dangerous combo. As I was waiting for my food I couldn't help but focus on each and every dude/girl walking around with all their long loose hair. Yes, they had hats on- but man their hair was wanting to fall into everything. Beards... I dare the next patron to turn a blind eye to all the hair..... and not in a Euro i'm-so-french-sexy way... but a more disturbing hipster way...wild and free. Entry. My first thoughts are... "no way could this place be this disorganized." As you walk in during the popular dinner time you find yourself amongst many other people at the entry basically asking yourself what to do next... Should you stand still? get drinks and wait? put your name down on a list, or what the hell to do. Turns out, you kind of stand in line and migrate to the front to get a "number" (*actually letters) . Then after your order you wait again to sit. and then when your sitting you can order again (genius). And when you stand in line, you can't cut the line to get a drink so that you can drink... and stand in line.... (see where I am going here. makes NO sense). Even typing this the next day is giving me a headache..... ugh. that place.... I do feel bad, Obviously no established financial backers would let this fly. So I should take it easy. They may get their act together. But I give it one year and this place is starting to circle the drain if not sooner. Like a Walmart goldfish. Seating/Decor Honestly. Does it matter? In a nutshell. Ramen Kazama - Sake in a glass....no Sippy cup?! - Ramen Near Me - Minneapolis, Minnesota

Ramen Kazama is one of my favorite ramen shops in the cities, even more so now that I've discovered their Tsukemen special on Wednesday evenings and for lunch on Sundays. Tsukemen ramen is when the noodles are served separate from the broth and you dip your noodles into the broth. The broth for good tsukemen is extra concentrated and the noodles are typically served chilled. This is my favorite type of ramen but I have had a hard time finding it in the cities since UniDeli removed it from their menu but Ramen Kazama's is one of the best I've ever had! The noodles are thick and chewy and the broth is savory and extremely flavorful. I have only been to Ramen Kazama three times but have enjoyed every bowl we've tried and am looking forward to trying more, especially since they are open for lunch on weekends (a rarity for many ramen shops). My wife is not a big pork fan but loves the Torishio (chicken broth ramen), which ends up being an extra rich chicken noodle soup and could be a good first introduction to ramen for someone who is looking to see what the buzz is about. I will say that the pricing is a little on the higher side, especially for a lunch, when you start adding in toppings or side dishes. I don't usually comment on the pricing and it is not a deal breaker for me (a few dollars extra here or there), the actual ramen is competitively priced, but it is worth noting. That said, the sides that we've tried have all been excellent. The gyoza is a great table-sharer and has a tangy mustardy dipping sauce that has a nice kick. As far as the actual restaurant, you order at the counter as you walk in and receive a number to place at your table, similar to many fast-casual restaurants. The dining area has a pretty large amount of seating and we have not had to wait for a spot yet (but have not gone during peak hours). Because of this style of service I do not believe that reservations are taken and they do not do takeout. Overall, Ramen Kazama is a great ramen option and has a few other menu items that are definitely worth a try but may not be the best place if you are hoping for a different style of entree; I believe the only other options are rice dishes but we have not tried those yet. Based on the quality of the other menu options I would guess that the rice dishes are quite tasty. read more

I am surprised with what this place has to offer; a few options for ramen, onigiri, veggie dishes like veggie ramen or veggie curry soup. They also serves beer, sake, cocktail. A friend and I watched Master if None season 2. You know that one episode where Dev goes on a million dates and it's cut in such a way that it seems like one long date with multiple girls? Well, one of of these dates he meets the Ramaniac. A lady who hits up ramen joints and writes super detailed reviews of them. Well, after watching that episode, my friend and I decided to go out for ramen. We stopped by this place on a cold day and placed our order at the front counter. We got those really tall number holders and sat down at the counter so we got a good view of the staff preparing our food. After a while, we got our bowls of ramen. It was so good! So brothy and warm and totally not up to the level of description the Ramaniac would get into. It was good. Tonkotsu Ramen - great savory broth with strong garlicky pork flavor and nice mouth feel with the fat content. Noodles were solid. Pork serving was on the small side but super tender. Egg slightly overcooked.... Overall best ramen I've had in Minneapolis. (Unideli the WORST, tonka better, and moto-i dece.) If I had a ramen craving definitely would return and recommend same for anyone else. It was good but not great. The ramen was pretty good but I've had better. I ordered the Torishio which was tasty but there were only two bite-sized pieces of chicken included in the whole bowl. Preface: On a recent trip to the L.A. area (Orange County) I was introduced to ramen at a spectacular restaurant there. I wanted to have that same experience here at home, so I tried Ramen Kazama. After all, its name begins with "Ramen", so it must specialize in ramen, and it has to be good... Well, it wasn't the same experience. And maybe I shouldn't compare Ramen Kazama with that L.A. restaurant, but I couldn't help but do that. Review: I had a #2. At first I thought I could choose what I wanted included in the bowl, but it turns out that it doesn't work like that here. The ingredients are standard for whichever dish you choose. I suppose I could have asked for them to modify it, but I took it as it was and was willing to see how I liked it. My two main complaints are that 1) I got just two strips of pork belly in the ramen. I expected much more based on my only other experience (in L.A.). 2) The broth tasted funky to me; there was a slightly bitter component to it. Again, this was not expected and was not enjoyed. All-in-all the meal was average. The calamari app was a bit chewy, although the batter was nice and crispy and the dip was tasty. I wouldn't get it again in any case. I was looking for the the best Minneapolis ramen place that would compare to my favorite spots in Chicago and yelp directed me to Ramen Kazama. I ordered their Tonkatsu ramen and a house sake. It ended up being about $22 and then a tip on top of that. I thought the flavor was good, but lacked the seasoning of what I've come to know as Tonkatsu. I tried the ramen my friend ordered, the #1, and found the broth to also be lacking in overall flavor. The aesthetic of the restaurant is fitting and I like the concept of ordering at the counter and finding a table. There was a good amount of seating and it wasn't very busy at 7:30pm on a Sunday.
