We came in as a family of three on a Sunday evening excited to try Setagaya for their ramen but were disappointed at what we got. The 2 stars I give are for its nice ambiance.We tried the one in East Village before and wanted to compare how they taste different (we love the garlic topped ramen in East village!). We were seated by a server who seemed to dislike his job because he provided minimum customer service and no smiles. We ordered all the highly recommended ramens, "All Star","Spicy Miso" and "Vegan Tantanmen". All of them looked really good in picture but the amount and quality of the ramen were mediocre. All three of them are average $14 but their portion sizes are too small. In addition, they all did not have enough topping. Especially the vegan tantanramen, I finished eating halfway and realized all I had left was noodle with a little bit of the thick soup (the soup for vegan tantanmen is really thick and the server did not mention it to us at all). I expected the vegan tantanmen to have more topping (like more veggies or tofu) that simply cilantro and nuts. I did not feel like the ramen was worth $13 because I can definitely get other better tasting ramen with sufficient toppings for better price. We left tips either way but three of us agree to not come back to this place again because it can use some improvement in terms of workers and food. read more

Ok so the vegan ramen is still delicious, and so is the kale/mushroom app, but the service is ATROCIOUS. It just gets worse every time I'm there. And it's always really hot for some reason with shitty music. But I would be able to get past that if the service wasn't sooo bad and neglectful... they just totally ignore you and take forever to bring anything, if they even come. I get that they can get crowded but it took me like 3 times asking for the check and then I just ended up bringing it up to the cash register because we didn't want to wait another 20 minutes for nothing. There are many great places to get ramen in New York. This is not one of them. If you want great ramen, go to Minca (same price.) If you want ramen that tastes like it came out of an expensive package from Mitsuwa, look no further. They have $3 drafts of beer on special for New Years so that was nice. All in all we are still hungry and wish we could have a do-over on dinner tonight. read more

This place is great! The "All Star Ramen" is my favorite bowl - it has a perfect savory and creamy broth, coupled with pork, scallions, and an egg. The noodles have perfect consistency - comparable to any of the other ramen greats in NYC. The best thing on the menu, in my opinion, is the Tori Tempura. It's flaky, airy, tender, and juicy! For $7, you get a hearty serving of chicken, that coupled with another small appetizer or a bowl of rice, can be a whole meal... if you decide to skip the ramen, but let's be real here. Cons: The price point is a bit high when they're not operating on lunch special pricing The pork is a little lean for my taste - i prefer a fattier pork belly. Good ramen with fast delivery, I had the tonkatsu ramen and pork over rice with butter. The ramen it's self were well made and not over cooked the broth was creamy and well prepared. Delivered warm not hot however as an over all experience the ramen is very good especially for a delivery option. The pork over rice wasn't so great it was roasted port cubed under seasoned over bland white rice. I tasted no butter at all... I would recommend for delivery although I have never dined in I think it would be good. Not going to knock your socks off but it's good enough. read more

Ramen is not super traditional tasting and the noodles aren't exactly my preference (I prefer a little more thickness and chew, like the noodles at ichiran), but it's pretty damn good and this place scores a lot of bonus points for their other dishes (karage, baby octopus, kale and mushroom salad all bomb$). Maybe 4/4.5 overall but prompt delivery pushes this over the edge. As to the ramen itself, it probably gets a 3.5. Definitely at the apex of the "neighborhood spot." read more

Their curry tsukemen. Oh sweet baby jesus is it good. It's super cumin-y and the perfect meal for a cold day. Just thinking about it is seriously making my mouth water. I've also ordered a glass of sake there twice and gotten pretty much the world's biggest pour both times, and let's be honest--there's nothing a large pour of alcohol can't fix. These Japanese cuisine here was impeccable! My friend who lives in Brooklyn recommended me to go to Setagaya if I want some Japanese food. And, when I was there, I was totally satisfied with the food!!! I have to thank him for suggesting this restaurant. I was delightfully surprised by the spicy miso ramen. These dishes are tricky to get just right, but the right combination of broth, slow cooked pork, and an ideal texture of noodles made this among the best ramen bowls I've ever had. We also had a kale and mushroom appetizer, which wouldn't intuitively mix well with ramen, but it was a delicious complement. There are a lot of ramen options in the city but we will definitely come back to this one. The only complaint was that there was one "server" managing the entire restaurant. He was amazing and was working at a frenetic pace, but couldn't keep up with drinks, getting the check, etc. We weren't in a rush, but probably would have had one more drink during the meal. read more

Black garlic ramen was nicely balanced. The broth was delicate and so were the thin noodles. Both were a great pair. The thin noodles very nicely "carried" enough of the broth into each bite. Perfect! However I couldn't say the same about the spicy miso. There wasn't alot of spiciness to begin with and the broth in general needed more depth of flavor, in other words very very bland. Additonally, the broth was too "thin" for the thick noodles it came with. Whatever favors the broth did have dissapeared because the noodles were too thick for an already very thin and somewhat flavor starved broth. To put it differently, if I ate this with my eye closed and didnt know it was abowl of ramen, I would just think I was eating wet noodles. Here are my recommendations for improvement. Make the broth a bit more concentrated to bring out more flavors and keep the thick noodle so you can actually taste it in each bite OR use a much thinner noodle (similar to the black garlic noodle) and add a dollop of chilli spice paste in the middle or on the side of the bowl so people can adjust how much spice they want. I should add that the toppings on this bowl did nothing to make the meal enjoyable. Whatever spiciness there was disappeared when you added a bite of raw cabbage. read more

This is part of the Japan Village inside the Industry City in Brooklyn, where shops are nice and with high prices to match. Ramen Setagaya is not excessively expensive and it's on par with any good noodle shops anywhere else. The soup is not too salty but then it's salty by homecook standard, which is to say it's pretty normal when eating out. It's Sunday lunch hour so there is a bit of waiting, about 10 minutes for 2 bowls of ramen. Seating is at the open kitchen counter or some other areas within the Japan Village. The standard bowl comes with two slices of pork and the Dx which I take as deluxe comes with 4 piece of pork and an egg. The difference is $13 and $15, so the price is not crazy expensive, I almost have to say reasonable or even cheap. It's a pretty well to do neighborhood. There is complementary Japanese condiments at the counter in case the pork can't fill up your stomach, try the ground sesame or red ginger. The sesame mill or grinder is fun to use, at least in the first trials. read more

Decent but not amazing. I came in on a cold, rainy, night and was seriously craving a full belly of warm broth and noodles. I didn't have to wait for a table and the service was good. The spicy ramen was REALLY spicy and kinda killed the flavor of everything else in the bowl. The broth was delicious ( I got a couple of good mouthfuls before I stirred in the chili) but a little on the greasy side. I really wanted to love this place. Brooklyn - and for that matter, New York - needs more ramen options and I am all for competition with the current sovereignty of Totto vs Ippudo. I got the spicy miso ramen. I had grown accustomed to spicy miso ramens being more flavorful and peppery than spicy, but this broth had such a strong kick that I had to take a few breaks and just chug water. The noodles (not sure if they use Sun Noodles like everyone else) were thicker than I expected and chewy, growing soggier as I slurped my soup. There were so many onions and bean sprouts, I had a hard time finding my noodles at the bottom of my bowl. For a total bill of around $17 for just a bowl of soup, I expected more. The decor is very 'Williamsburg'. They are new to the neighborhood so I have high hopes of them improving as they grow their business. read more

This was my first time eating Ramen noodles. I loved it! I ended up ordering the vegan Tantan men Ramen and it was so yummy. It had a creamy taste, noodles cooked to perfection, adding cilantro as a topping made this soup enjoyable. I also enjoy the wings with the soy garlic sauce as an appetizer. Very nice Ramen spot in the heart of willamsburg. My wife and I were walking around the area with a craving for ramen and stumbled upon this place right across our favorite bakery spot. The ramen was really good full of flavor. I wish they had other protein options other than the Pork broth that they sell but, it's amazing either way. I got the spicy Tonkotsu which packs some spice in it which I love (because who likes weak broth). My wife got the spicy miso which she also loved. I have to say the ramen was a bit underwhelming. I went with the "original" ramen and the broth really was not a full bodied, hearty broth. Maybe it was perhaps I ate at nearby Ramen Yebisu last time and the difference in the broth was very much apparent. I would describe Ramen Setagaya's broth to be lighter, lightly seasoned and perhaps that is something that may please some folks. Additionall, I ordered the chicken karaage and squid "dumplings." I wouldn't qualify them as dumplings as they were really more like breaded fried squidballs. Both appetizers were on par and was not over cooked. With other choices in the area I really would not recommend this ramen spot as my first choice, but again I could imagine some folks may prefer a light broth and this can be your spot. read more

I lived in Japan for six years and ramen is my favourite food so I am always excited for more ramen options. Sadly I was underwhelmed by the ramen. Waaay too small bowl, not much going on on the taste front, noodles just ok. Just unremarkable and underwhelming. I had green tea, which was simply a generic green tea bag in a mug - a bad sign. They are new so I will give them the benefit of the doubt, but it's hard to go back with all the other options out there. With all the great, authentic spots in NYC such as Hide Chan in Manhattan and Ramen Yebisu around the corner in Williamsburg this does not cut the wasabi. read more
